It's just pure passion and deadly vibrato plus the combination of that Les Paul Jr and that wall of killer Sunn amps that sets Leslie apart from all others
@@billyboy1093 No question about it. Mountain was a magnificent band. Felix had so many different music talents including his singing and Corky was an excellent drummer. Leslie West? An awesome tone guitarist. Just as good as Clapton, Hendrix or Paige. And Leslie had a sense of humor ..So I know he`d chuckle at my next comment. That girl sitting on the top of the solid barrier above the huge "Whopper" word at .49. Sittin` next to her boyfriend I think. Doesn`t she have her hand on his ..........Whopper?
No lie, my friend. I remember as a little boy hearing them and thinking about how awesome that guitar sound was. He could get such a crushing heavy tone. Those Sunny amps don't hurt either. U got a Sunn model T last year and had to do a ton of work on it but it's a beast now.
This makes my heart ache. If you get it, you get it, and it's quite difficult to articulate it beyond that. Leslie is transmitting something of immense depth that perhaps even he didn't consciously comprehend; an explosion of emotion, a distillation of the cultural moment of 1970, a violent explosion of expressive musical intensity. The electric guitar is lightening rod in this man's hands.
I never get tired of watching this. I'm hooked on those bass riffs, the drums and the way the guitar starts off so gentle an slowly builds in intensity and fuzz up to the climax. WOW!
What else can be said of the great Mountain band. Leslie is❤ The Man,Felix is very underrated. Great voice n playing.. Much thanks to Jack Bruce (goat on bass) for writing the song.Saw them twice at Filmore East .unbelievable show. Listen to their albums and other songs.most guys only know Mississippi Queen but you'll Like their other stuff. R I P JACK, LESLIE, AND FELIX. There will never be anyone like you.😢❤😢❤😢
Thanks Stephen, mountain at their best, the sweetest ballads sang by Felix, terrific guitar from Leslie, it is really heavy rock and roll but not noisy. Corky Laing must be one of the greatest drummers. Thanks Stephen, these videos are a treasure of pleasure.
We were all so innocent, alive and young then, discovering everything and music was getting better every day. The beautiful girl at 4:13 was like many girls we knew and loved back then; all were unique, natural, sweet and they could melt your heart in a second with that smile. I look at her and I'm there again; that feeling never goes away. I hope they are all doing well now.
Did not realize how good Felix was until he was long gone. Jack B may have written this song but Mountain did a wonderful job 'owning' this one. Leslie West still one of the all time greats but for some reason his name is never in that conversation.....
The main reason why you don't hear the name Leslie Weinstein (aka Leslie West) in circles or list of names for great guitarist was that Mountain ever had that massive charted hit - Mississippi Queen peaked at #21 (I think) - the album Climbing! peaked at #17. Their follow up album managed to peaked at #16, but it's single seemed to only reached into the top 90. It wasn't until 1973 with the Best Of Mountain that they pulled out another gold album (but half of the songs was from Climbing!).
Lets not forget what it said on the back of the first Mountain album, on which this is from: “This album is meant to be played loud!”. We really took that to heart.
I remember this show on TV... 14 years old, mind blown... later Iggy and the Stooges came on and Iggy smeared himself with peanut butter... Awesome!!! Man could these guys play, and did Corky put some hurt on his drums or what?
Saw them live in the Summer of 1970 when they opened for Jethro Tull! I had never heard of them, but they were incredible, and West has never sounded better with his more bluesy tinged rock in recent years.
This song was the last played at every Msgr. Farrell dance I attended in the early 70's by whatever band was performing. This ballad and Nantucket Sleighride have never received the accolades they deserved. Great memories!
I saw Mountain with Felix P and Leslie West in 1977 in Wilkes Barre PA with a whole bunch of friends from Scranton PA where I grew. The band Slade was the opening act!!!
Saw these guys when I was a kid in Jax. Fl. This was the second concert that I had been where they had a "power outage". The roadies would jump around on the stage, looking for the short while the drummer did a long drum solo. Good times! Took me a long time to realize it was all part of the act. Uriah Heep did it and so did Cactus.
I was there that day and remember the promoters spent what seemed like hours asking everyone to get off the field, finally felix came on stage requesting everyone to get back so the concert could begin. Then the drummer hit those first few beats of Mississippi Queen and everyone was right back on the field. That's my memory but it was a long time ago.lIf anyone else can remember the day please let me know if what I remember was what really happened
Mountain was always one of my favorite bands. They truly are one of the best bands this country ever produced. The stories their songs told always had a uniquely American flavor to them. This is one of maybe 3 songs I really want to hear on my death bed. They are still alive as long as we remember them.
Turned on to mountain when I was 15 in 75' by Frank a mountain of a man himself. Have loved their music ever since. Would have loved to have been in Cincinnati to see this awesome music at this festival

I played bass in my younger days, and recognized and acknowledged Felix as THE major influence and inspiration from the very beginning. Bruce was high on my list, too, as was Entwhistle, but Pappalardi was THE man.
MOUNTAIN tremenda Banda,Felíx excelente Bajista,Cantante,Compositor & Productor nada más y nada menos que de Cream. esto no tiene desperdicio como dicen "Medio Palo,Amigos Agarren su Gallo Muerto"
I still have my bootleg of them playing this at New Canaan high school in 1969. That whole show is now on YT if you search it. No video, but the audio is fairly clean.
In regards to Mick's comment, you are right. Angus Young from AC/DC, one the best guitar players ever, said that playing 1000 meaningless notes was not music, it was practice.
Think about it, if you can make something like this that brings a feeling of wellness and peace to an old timer like me and thousands like me, you have not lived for nothing. 50 years form now someone will be listening to this song and get influenced by it. 50 years from now, people in my own family will be saying, "Dan who?" For all those who enjoyed this song and the band, I hope life treated you well and you found whatever you were looking for. I will always remember those lovely ladies who are still lovely today. Not all who wander are lost and it is better to seek your whole life and never find resolution, than to ride the main stream bus down the twisted road of complacency. Hail to the seekers, for they are the ones who find the distant shores. I am afraid we will never have a time like this again.
@ Joseph Stubel.......Yes, Felix was an extremely talented man. While Eric Clapton and Cream had a fine album in "Disraeli Gears", it was Felix who produced that (some might say) groundbreaking album. He worked on so many different projects. A wonderful bassist too, a great loss to music. Personally, I discovered Mountain at age 16 and still love their early material. (One band I never got to see live). As someone commented, it wasn't the same afterwards. RIP Felix.

I saw them in 1970, just about time i saw the experience, cream, zep, etc. and will put them in right there with them all.
What a beautiful voice Felix had! And a smoking lead by the great Leslie West. RIP R&R brothers!!
Felix's death in 1983 was straight murder, in my book.
Leslie West never tried to be the fastest gun in the "West". But he was truly one of the best at phrasing and tone. That makes hime one of the best!

I can hear this 1000 times, still gives me goose bumps. Listen to that chop by Leslie. THE BEST.
Mountain could play harder than every other group and then come out with this "smooth" ballad. What's a great group!!
They weren't harder than Sabbath, Purple or UFO. 😉
This song was written by Jack Bruce

Deep thundering bass from Felix, incredible soulful guitar from Leslie West....Best concert I ever saw outdoors Montreal probably 71-72
Man I loved those guys.......and this song. Felix and Co. rocked.
Great guitar players like West can say so much with just a few notes.
Leslie’s tasteful guitar solos makes guitar shredding seem like a unnecessary distraction.
