Jack Bruce's voice always gave me shivers. So few people realized that this classicly trained musician could do everything well and beautifully. His jazz work was amazing. RIP Jack Bruce. You were everything a musician should be.
For me it conjures images of people traveling in a wagon in a search of a better life and happiness. They see bones of fellow travelers along the wayside who didn't complete the journey. They think about struggles and the moments of happiness, all while knowing they will join those fallen by the wayside.
Jack Bruce is one of the greatest musicians of the last 60 years, hands down. What a voice and what a talented bassist, pianist, composer and on and on. The dynamics and texture here are otherworldly. Man, this gives me goose bumps. Song is a top 100 greatest masterpiece by any standard. Awesome post. Finishing this up, it is really sad that I find myself more frequently ending my comments regarding my heroes with this thought but R.I.P. Jack.
The guy is an absolute legend. I am sure that many will come across his genius as well as many others. He was/is a particular favourite of mine being nearly 60 years old myself. This I have never hear before so thanks for posting. Live lfe and stay safe.
Like John Peel, this giant of music died on our wedding anniversary. I have the nerve to play this acoustically with just my 12 string guitar. This man was without doubt the finest musician in Cream. His voice, his bass playing and multi-instrumentalism as well as his songwriting are still an inspiration.
Bless you Jack. You are gone, but NEVER forgotten. I'll make sure my children hear this and know who you were and what you did almost 50 years ago. RIP.
Couldn't have said it better. A true musical genius. His music will out live us all. God bless you Jack. Thanks for all of the great sounds you gave us. Rest in peace.
Ed Helium, I believe you. 'Jack Bruce's shoes cannot be filled.' I just discovered him about two months ago while watching Eric Clapton videos. Jack's smile grabbed me by the heart. I have never been so profoundly touched in a moment as by Jack Bruce. I've set about learning all I can about him. I don't know if there are any books about him, so I spend my spare moments watching UA-cam videos of him. I'm trying to discover the man behind the sparkling smile:) Blessings to you!
+sunflowers28 The original recording of Tales of Brave Ulysses on Wheels of Fire, is perhaps the greatest dramatic/poetic rock ballad ever written/performed. Over the past 60 years, as an inveterate world class audiophile in all genres of music, and I mean ALL, I have never heard it surpassed. The companion piece is As You Said. They are bookends, mighty and poignant.
Jack Bruce...you were and will always be one of my favorite artist of all time...what a gift you were to the musical world...God bless you and thanks for leaving such wonderful music like this particular song...so beautiful and meaningful and filled with emotion and your personality...sheer brilliance. from a musical genius....RIP...
Amazing bass player, great at the harmonica, fantastic author, fantastic singer and also effective and touching emotional piano player. An immense talent..RIP JACK!
I discovered Jack Bruce a few years ago before I even knew that he was dead. My father bought me a CD with Mountain containing the song "Theme For An Imaginary Western" and I vividly remember playing the whole CD over and over, but this song was especially close to my heart. When I learned it was a cover, I went to the original. The purity and raw passion of Bruce's version is something that I have never seen replicated. I love Jack Bruce, the music he produced and inspired, and I thank him thoroughly for making me care about music the way I do.
Welcome to a very special club! People who "get" Jack Bruce! I was fortunate enough to meet him and spend a little bit of time with him after a sound check and before a show....I felt like I had known him my whole life...there was no filter...he was just a wonderful guy. You often meet your heroes..and they aren't at all what you hope for...Meeting Jack was one of the highlights of my life that I will never forget...he signed my Songs For A Tailor album...that I had had for nearly 20 years at the time. His live show was insane...he played almost every song he had ever written....He is one of the greatest vocalists to have ever graced a microphone.
I always loved Jack Bruce's voice. This is the first time I see him playing piano - unbelievable! And really great song, it is the first time I hear it. I have to listen to some of his albums.
I was also privileged to shake the hand of a genius.... singer, songwriter, bass, harmonica and piano player. This was back at a signing in 1992. A true musical genius!!
Just like when I was a kid, when I heard White Room, I later heard Theme For An Imaginary Western on the radio and could not get enough that song either. The imaginary of..Where the laughter sounds...Oh, the sun was in their eye.....And the desert that dry...In the country towns....Where the laughter sound......love it!!.....I spent years following the shadows that run from themselves and other songs written by Pete Brown and sung by Jack Bruce. The words to his songs always got me. Pete was a poet!! And today I will play this song too, quite few times in remembrance Rest in Peace Peter 'Pete' Constantine Brown, your songs made a difference to a lot of folk. Always, let the sunshine of love beam up to you Pete! When the wagons leave the city For the forest and further on Painted wagons of the morning Dusty roads where they have gone Sometimes travelin' through the darkness Met the summer comin' home Fallen faces by the wayside Looked as if they might have known Oh, the sun was in their eye And the desert that dry In the country towns Where the laughter sound Oh, the dancing and the singing Oh, the music when they played Oh, the fire that they started Oh, the girls with no regret Sometimes they found it, sometimes they kept it Often lost it along the way Fought each other to possess it Sometimes died in sight of day Oh, the sun was in their eye And the desert that dry In the country town Where the laughter sounds Oh, the sun was in their eye And the desert that dry In the country towns Where the laughter sound
I have been saddened by loss but never has a musicians passing affected me so. Be good Mr Bruce. Your music has mad my and so many other lives better. I hope that stays with you.
Great performance of one of Jack's best songs. Recorded live in Cologne 1990, I believe. Nice to read the other friendly comments, to see that we're not alone. My dear soulmates, we all must accept the fact, that Jack never will have the attention of a greater public. But hold out, this song will last for decades ...
I have heard him Sing....WOW I have heard him play harmonica.....WOW I have heard him play Bass..... WOW And now I have heard him play piano.... NOT bad Mr. Bruce. You have brought spice to my live. R.I.P.
So many bands have covered this. I've loved this song since I was a child. Felix sang it at Woodstock with Mountain but, it will always be Jack's most famous song. Today, Songs for a Tailor is on my stereo - I've never felt sad listening to that album until today.
Jack Bruce is one of the greatest vocalists to ever grace a microphone....and then there is everything else that he does...which is unparalleled. Fan for life....if you haven't seen him live...do it....
One of my all time favorite songs and this is surely the best rendition. Got me cryin' like a baby... once again. Thank you Jack Bruce - Miss you forever.
We knew Jack Bruce was a brilliant bass player and singer. Who knew he was a brilliant piano player as well?! Thanks for sharing this clip--which enables us Cream fans to rediscover another side of Jack Bruce.
What's better than this time when Jack Bruce was singing and playing piano on 'Theme For An Imaginary Western' ... just remembering his great bands & great music
HOW WONDERFUL OF A SONG,BY F.PAP., AND WITH MOUNTAIN,THIS IS A BEAUTIFUL WAY TO PAY RESPECT TO A ,GREAT PRODUCER,BASS PLAYER AND SONGWRITER.RIP,FP.😎🎸🔊🎶☮️ BOB.
Wow, my bandmates and I who all grew up as big fans of Cream and Jack Bruce, have been talking a lot about him lately. We all just can't believe he's gone, what an amazing musician. Great performance here, solo even!
Great chord progression. how i loved the simplified genius of Jacks writing, so taste full.He could have played a million jazz changes ,but instead would write a 2 Riff song, that would blow you away with feeling
Jack has been a big influence on my musical career. I started playing the harmonica when I first heard him play on songs like Traintime and Rollin and Tumblin, and well, the rest is history. Have been playing now for over 40 years, and have performed some of Cream's blues numbers. Ever come to Chicago, come see me at Kingston Mines or Rosas.
What an artist this man was. Consummate writer, musician, and vocalist. I remember hearing him for the first time- I was 14 and sitting outside of my older sister's room as she played the new lp release of FRESH CREAM-- hearing the huge voice coming out of someone who looked no older than a teenager, the thumping, driving and complex bass lines of a 6 string Gibson bass. . . Was familiar with Eric's work from the Mayall Bluesbreakers Band, but this guy blew me away. Had the good fortune of seeing Cream a short time later in Mpls and wasn't disappointed! One of the best ever from maybe the best power rock trios ever. Rest in peace Mr. Bruce- you will live in 4ever!!
Highly priviledged to have seen him on more than one occasion.. I didn't quite realise it then but he is truly legendary.. A one off definitely in my lifetime. Long gone but never forgotten by me and then when I go those memories will die too. In that way we all fade into the mists. Amaaaazing
I bought a Mountain 8 track back in the day for the song "Mississippi Queen" and once listing to this song it became my favorite on the album. And now at 62 years old, I still listen to it as one of my all time favorites.
Saw Jack perfume live over the years, in small club venues. In person, as good as this recording is, that voice was pure magic. Very nice guy, as well. 👍
Beautiful song, very well done. RIP Jack Bruce, Felix Pappalardi, and now Leslie West.
Tom sawyer. Enfield ??
and now 5/19/23 the man who wrote the lyrics Pete Brown
I don't know why, but this performance had me burst into tears. No more words. R.I.P. Jack, Felix and Leslie.
I know why...its a frightening Tear jerker...If this song don't grab your soul, you're a Cold somma bitch...Matt Mad Dog 🐕 Sweeney
Jack Bruce's voice always gave me shivers. So few people realized that this classicly trained musician could do everything well and beautifully. His jazz work was amazing. RIP Jack Bruce. You were everything a musician should be.
He always stayed out of the lights
I fell in love with the song when I heard it a million years ago and have never changed my opinion It's one of the best ballads ever.
For me it conjures images of people traveling in a wagon in a search of a better life and happiness. They see bones of fellow travelers along the wayside who didn't complete the journey. They think about struggles and the moments of happiness, all while knowing they will join those fallen by the wayside.
HAVE A LISTEN!! To the " live" version of this song. Mountain at Woodstock Festival: Volume Two.
How can any body thumb down. Hauntingly delivered with impeccable vocals from one of the greatest Bass Players Britain has ever had. RIP Jack.
Trolls, all those who gave this a thumbs down.
The Greatest ...too busy for ginger!
Jack was scottish i guess
It's called "limited vocabulary"
A “thumbs down” says nothing about the video content and everything about the person that clicked the down button.
One of the best songwriters and musicians of all time!!!RIP JACK!!!
His voice is hauntingly beautiful. I could listen to this recording over and over.
There are no words. Except, Thanks, Mr. Bruce.
The bass and voice of Jack Bruce will never be forgotten,he's simply the best.RIP.
And don't forget his harp playing, i.e. 'Traintime'!
One of thee best songs of all time. Fact, not opinion.

They were all good, which is why it was a great band. But he shouldn't be overshadowed by Clapton.
YOU ARE 100% CORRECT MY Friend! and I'm a Clapton fan!!
Love this rendition!!
R.I.P. Mr. Bruce. You taught generations how to play and perform. You will be missed. Godspeed
Bless you Jack. You are gone, but NEVER forgotten. I'll make sure my children hear this and know who you were and what you did almost 50 years ago. RIP.

best bass player of all time
I'm with you, if we can put Charles Mingus at his side!
I´d say so
One of the greatest. You have to include Jaco Pastorius.
One of my biggest regrets is I never saw him live. What an extraordinary talent.
I did. With John McLaughlin and Tony Williams
Classically trained my friends
RIP Jack & Felix
And now Leslie too.
@@idesofmarch2368 And now sadly Pete Brown who wrote the lyrics.
In my opinion, his best performance of this beautiful song.
Nice touch from Jack Bruce dedicating this song to former Mountain bass player Felix Papalardi who died a while ago.
Former Mountain Bass player and producer of Cream records.
most importantly immortalized "owned" this song with Mountain
@cobar53 Jack was also boinking his friend Felix's wife Gail.
And then, we’ll Gail shot Felix , but that’s another story
Thats a real eye opener. Never realised how good Jacks voice was. x
So many memories this brings........beautiful

Rest in Peace Peter 'Pete' Constantine Brown, your songs made a difference to a lot of folk.
Always, let the sunshine of love beam up to you Pete!
When the wagons leave the city
For the forest and further on
Painted wagons of the morning
Dusty roads where they have gone
Sometimes travelin' through the darkness
Met the summer comin' home
Fallen faces by the wayside
Looked as if they might have known
Oh, the sun was in their eye
And the desert that dry
In the country towns
Where the laughter sound
Oh, the dancing and the singing
Oh, the music when they played
Oh, the fire that they started
Oh, the girls with no regret
Sometimes they found it, sometimes they kept it
Often lost it along the way
Fought each other to possess it
Sometimes died in sight of day
Oh, the sun was in their eye
And the desert that dry
In the country town
Where the laughter sounds
Oh, the sun was in their eye
And the desert that dry
In the country towns
Where the laughter sound

a talent way deeper beyond 'Clapton'
Never thought Clapton was a god. Always knew Bruce was a genius, though. He never got the credit he deserved.
Great chord progression. how i loved the simplified genius of Jacks writing, so taste full.He could have played a million jazz changes ,but instead would write a 2 Riff song, that would blow you away with feeling

He was one in 100 million. A genius. Gave me a lot of happiness along the years. Met him once in Detroit as a teenager. Kind.
