Mountain, at the 1970 New York Pop Festival at Randalls Island

- Videofreex brought their multi-cam studio to Randalls Island to capture some of the top groups and this was the first out-door concert to employ video projection at stage-rear. Mountain was famous for their hit recording of, "MIssissippi Queen". Here are a few less well known tunes from their stage act (Stormy Monday Bues, etc.). Our recording of "MQ" was mysteriously "withdrawn" from our library shelf. It appears, abridged, elsewhere on the internet. But first, a word from the sponsor....Other acts were recorded. To learn what's in the library, Google search: Video Data Bank and then search Videofreex collection or call them for details.
Leslie West Mountain ... They can never be forgotten. Here in Brazil in the early 70's we listened daily all the time. Mountain is simply unforgettable!
Felix was never even originally supposed to be in the band. He produced and collaborated with Leslie and eventually joined the band. Perfect matchup with West's style. Shockingly, Felix was murdered by his own wife. Gone way too soon. RIP Felix.
Gail Collins👹
My cousin, Sheldon Rosen (RIP), was the equipment manager for Mountain. Previously, he managed Bartholomew +3 in Montreal and then joined Mountain alongside his friend Corky. Great memories.
The great Felix Peppalardi on bass.
One of the greatest bands ever!!!
After going to Woodstock in Aug.69 , I hitchhiked, by myself to this event from Dartmouth Mass.
It was incredible! I was 18.
I went to 14 Mountain concerts and 14 Jethro Tull concerts.
What a great time!
Dude, you were a badass! Wish I had seen some of these bands but I was only 10 in 1970
Awesome!
Amazing. My brother turned me on to Mountain in the early 70s when I was just a kid. Closest I got to see Mountain was when I was working as a bartender at the Hard Rock Hollywood in 2007. They were so loud they rattled the bottles in the bar. My manager let me sneak in to the venue to catch a couple song. No one like Leslie West.
You're an animal!😲
Mountain and Black sabbath were the bands more hard and wild in that era. They Kick ass everybody
Yes this is a fact
REST IN ETERNAL PEACE ~ FELIX A. PAPPALARDI JR. AND LESLIE WEST.
When these guys were having a good night and started jamming there was no band better! Felix was the perfect backbone for this type of jamming! The sound that comes from his bass guitar is simply phenomenal! Leslie was one of the best guitarists as well! Great band and may they rest in peace!
The sound, other than the playing style, was three full stacked sunn 100 watt coliseum pa amplifiers .
All tube circuitry of course.
Leslie had the same exact rig.
Leslie and felix both had the volumes cranked and utilized the volume controls on their guitars .
RIP Leslie West 🎸🎀
Always loved Mountain, just realized Leslie looks like Andre the Giant!!✌
You can see the Spirituality in Felix Pappalardi's face! He's totally immersed in the music.
Felix, you were the coolest Bassist ever!
Dreams of Milk and Honey, one of the coolest Mountain riffs ever!
Yeah, and they broke it off fierce here. Equipment stress test.
Felix Papalardi. incredibly underrated bass player, with a killer tone. The american equivalent to Jack Bruce.
Felix, Jack Bruce, and Geezer Butler are my all time biggest bass influences!
@@jg6698 No not really. Because when one mentions the greatest bassists in rock you get the usual suspects. McCartney, Lee, Entwistle, JPJ. Felix isn't even in the top 10 99% of the time. So no it is not an absurd notion that he doesn't get enough recognition that he deserves.
@@monsterzero9607 you need to get out more.
@@jg6698 That's cute. I give you a detailed explanation, and all you got is insults. Grow up, boy. And go pick a fight with someone else. Because I promise you I know more about Rock music than you and your parents combined. Good day.
@@jg6698Ok Grandpa since you wanna play hard ball here we go: 1) NEVER did I say Felix wasn't a bad bass player, nor undeserving as a higher role in history, but whose name do you think people know more: Geddy Lee or Felix? Underrated is not the same as undeserving, it means he's not as well know to the mass populace. 2) Thank you for acknowledging my books and posters as I am quite pleased with them. I just shows that - unlike your mediocre mindset - I actually read and do research on things I love like rock music. I also got 20+ years of playing bass in bands to backup what I say Jack. I will say that sadly I don't live in my Mom's basement though it is a lot nicer than the digs I live in. 3) So because I wasn't around in the 60's and 70's that means I don't know anything about the music? That is the most pretentious and ignorant statement I've ever read! You may have many a year on me, but that doesn't mean you have anymore intelligence than me or any other Joe. Stroking your ego don't do anything but tell me the little size of your dick. Plus I find hard to believe - due to your risible responses - that you're THAT much smarter than me. I suggest you lay off the LSD and Pot, Maaaaaan, and try and save what little functioning brain power you got. Peace out, dinosaur.
Genius. God bless Leslie and Felix.
No need to do battle about personal stuff that doesn’t matter. Style, feeling, interpretation, musical talent and the blending of each player’s ability are unique and like so many bands and individual musicians Mountain had these in abundance. I just try to appreciate them for what they created and the feeling they put in you when you listen to their music, and this next is very important, when you can visualize them playing. Watching L W and F P interact with the flow and nuances of the music is a pleasure to behold.
I remember when I was in elementary school hearing "Mississippi Queen" in the cafeteria during an event and my little non musical elementary school brain was blown away. Leslie's guitar sounded like no one else's since then. No ones!
I remember when I was in Elementary school stealing "Mountain Climbing" album. They graduated me to High School Great success. Now I am in a Higher School still listening to the album I stole
@@markfromct2
When did you steal the album?
I saw Leslie West in the early 90's before he was to play at the Lone Star Cafe. He checked in to the hotel where I was working and I said to him "Hey, there's a great guitarist with your same name". And he said, "Yeah, that's just like me". It was him minus about 200 pounds ! Hope that gave him a few extra years.
Did you know that was him?
Love his connection with Felix. He turns to him at every chance he gets to engage and bond
I've listened to the album "Flowers of Evil" and that "live" side of "Dream Sequence" is among the most melodic guitar work ever done !
I was at that concert academy of music exalent
@@cliffparks9942 Wow ... how lucky you were there .... I Iove the early Mountain years; he is a very underrated guitarist.
Thumbs up for Historical Value . The sound and vision leave much to be desired on this . But i was lucky enough to see Mountain Live at the height of their Musical Powers . And what Musical Power they had . Leslie never recovered from Felix's untimely and tragic death . And the real magic of Mountain was forever lost from that point on . Their first 4 albums should be owned by every lover of late 60s ,early 70s Rock .
I was there!
Hendrix too!
These men are absolute Legends
NOBODY COULD PLAY GUITAR AND SING LIKE LESLIE WEST. NOBODY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Godfather of American hard rock and metal for that matter. Decades ahead of their time. Talent doesn't describe what they had.
As heavy as it gets. Mind-blowing stuff.
Mississippi queen along with kashmir and purple haze hooked me to the heavy sound when I was 16. Never regretted it. Grown to be a metallhead of course. The fatso was genius godmnit
The guitar tone that defined what balls out rock and roll sounds like. Only say leslie when he sat in with the Allmans at the Beacon but oh my god it was like being hit by a truck.
Love how loud it is. Missing from todays music.
I loved Leslie West’s oice back in the day. Just like I loved Steve Mariott’s.
I love that real bluesy hardcore, cigarette stained voice he had back then.
It was so powerful with his absolutely monstrous guitar playing.
dylanesque66
Yeah , an " oice " can be awesome when affected by smoking !
Leslie's voice never changed like alot of singers , he was belting it out until the end
RIP Leslie King of the Les Paul Jr. & Quintessential New Yorker!
His guitar playing is incredible!!!
these guys deserve way more credit 100% i think these guys werebone of the founders of hard rock/ metel! by all means what a wicked guitarest leslie west is!!
Tony Iommi would agree with that statement 100% they toured together Back in 1970 and we're good friends
Thanks for the post...great show.
Saw them at a Toronto weekend festival around this time period. Without a doubt, they were the stars of the weekend. Talk about a wall of sound! Yngwie knocks off 15 notes to West's 3, but who would you rather listen to for an evening?
I would be happier if Leslie just played one note!
Leslie West Yngwie Malmsteen sounds like Flight of the Bumblebee LOL on repeat cheers
Mosport Race Track?

I haven't seen this video yet. Great show. RIP Great Fatsby. Felix, Steve. One of my favorite bands.
So glad I found this footage, thanks a lot. Remember reading, after Leslie saw the Beatles at Shae Stadium, he said to himself, well "it's time to either shit or get off the pot", so he committed himself to making music. Obvious he and Felix loved each other like brothers. Some bands I just can't get enough of.
It's pretty obvious how heavy metal was formed mountain and Black Sabbath
Mountain is one of the tightest groups to come out of the late 60's. When concert performances sound tighter than studio recordings, the musicians are top shelf. The industry shelved the best proto-metal 8:49 groups for this time period of war in the 21st Century. Now we can relive the musical excitement our parents were exposed to. The good stuff we couldn't find at the record stores in the 1980s.
Thank god the Videofreex lugged all that video equipment to this show! History Preserved.
I was there for the Saturday show ! Jack Bruce was on the bill with Tony Williams & Eric Clapton was also on the bill for the night I went, the second night Saturday , but they didn't play. I think Someone stole the Money from the ticket sales. So all the acts had to take a cut in pay ! So on Saturday the only big band that played was Ten Years After !!! They rocked Downing Stadium , & I was tripping !!!
And who was near enough to the money to steal it? The promotor?
These guys are simply incredible. Leslie West's guitar always has the perfect tone. Its dripping with hot blue tubes.
Living in the Bronx at the time, my friends and I walked to Randall’s Island to this three day event. We saw Hendrix, Mountain, Ten Years After,Cactus, Steppenwolf, Grand Funk Railroad . That’s what I remember being it was so long ago. Tremendous festival!!!
I was body guard to MOUNTAIN three times , majestic hills in wisconsin, aragon in chicago and auditorium in chicago.
Grandmaster Rico Paone
This will always blow any shredding away with ease.
Probably the most underrated great 60s group.
they are not, they where very famous and made very much money. Bands like the keef hartley band or cactus are underrated.
Mountain formed in 1969. Their heyday was in the early 70's. From '70-'73 they were at their best. They weren't really a 60's band, just the last year of the decade.
More about heralding in the '70s - harder, more stripped down rawk.
This band still raises the hairs, legendary as they come. WOW!!
Thanks for sharing incredible band
Oh this is priceless footage! thanks for sharing this!!
Thanks, Mountain vids are quite rare apparently. This is one of the best I've seen. I would love to see a pro shot full show of the band. My Daddy used to tell me about seeing them in '70, '71 and judging by this he was right.
Just discovered mountain, don't know how I missed them up to now but they are fantastic
Thanks for the upload. The fact that this video even exists is amazing. This is genuine history and must be seen/heard to future generations as the foundation for the real music we hear today. In the age of electronic bullshit, it is refreshing to see new bands play actual instruments being inspired by artists like this. I've read stories about Leslie where he'd walk into a bar, take over the stage and just play the guitar without a band for a couple hours. RIP Master
All 3 days,scored 3 hits of sunshine,remember like yesterday.
scott sherman A concert full of people and 3 hits is a lot around other people? Fried crosseyed
Danny Hood know that's right
Thanks for posting a rare Mountain vid, awesome.
This is amazing. Video really holds up especially in low light. Monster performance
Out of fucking sight, man! ✌️🇺🇲🤯
I saw a shitload of concerts back in the 70's, and they were all much louder then than they are nowadays. But Mountain was THE loudest band I ever heard, hands down. Thanks for uploading; this is cool!
👍👍👍👍 right on absolutely!!! These young folks just don't know
Slade was three times louder than mountain!
Just rock, baby, keep your whimsy judgment for when you decide to do rock'n roll ... Do not think you're capable, I hope.
_\!/_ Mountain, 2017.
louder maybe.
But for sure not better!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Slade couldn't suck Mountain's wee wee.
Unbelievably amazing!!! Love it!!! Thank you Videofreex!!
Very cool! It's the first time I see this one!
Thank you uploading this video!
I've finally heard, and this time seen, an alternate version of "Stormy Monday"!
I believe it to be their masterpiece in improvisation!
Listening to Felix on "Stormy Monday", featured on the Triple Album ~
"The First Great Rock Festivals Of The Seventies", inspired me to pick up the Bass!
All was Bliss in 1970 listening Mountain and idolizing Felix Pappalardi!
I was in my first year at Pacoima Junior High School, Pacoima, California when Mississippi Queen was released as a Single in February, 1970.
I wish I could somehow go back in time and relive it all!
I remember sometime in the early 90’s …I was outside in line to see a band I can’t even recall … and the opening act was warming up on stage … absolutely raging through the meanest version of Creams Crossroads I ever heard … I couldn’t wait to get in and see who it was singing and playing the guitar 🎸!! …LW 🔥🎸
Thanks a million!! What a gem!
Can hear so much of Felix's influence on Cream when he produced Disraeili Gears
"Leslie West from mountain... introduced me to cocaine"...
-Ozzy Osbourne
Wow!!! The bass would blow out your chests!!!
I attended all the major NY festivals including Woodstock, Watkins Glen, and this strange bad vibe weekend riddled with late show & no show bands when they heard they wouldn't be paid. The mood was negative due to all the politics evolving from all the anti establishment groups like the Black & White Panthers, Yippes, SDS, and others handing out their flyers and leaflets while practically everyone was tripping on every kind of LSD. It was disorganized and dark and a very shaky production. The festival one everyone seems to overlook was held later that summer August, 1970 at Shea Stadium in Queens called the Festival of Peace and had many great bands and was very well run with a great hot summer day/night positive vibe. It ran from 10 am to midnight and featured many great bands Credence, Steppenwolf, Johnny Winter, Janis Joplin, James Gang, Rascals, Miles Davis, look into it although there is NO video footage.
I remember this one , had fun. Some good music. The wheels fell off. I was 14. With my girlfriend . We had a great time. Remember this set. Never saw this video before. Lot of political ego trippers. We still had fun went and ate lunch with the Black Panthers. Maybe the strangest concert I was ever personally at.
Leslie ( RIP)
They need a special hall of fame for the 3 peace rock band! mountain, cream,zz top, triumph, kings x just to name a few! There's something just so special about a drummer a bass player, and guitar player !
Mountain had a keyboard player, Steve Knight, most of the time. You can hear him in this performance even if he's not shown
When Mountain was as its best, the band had 4 members.
heavy !
This, and the Woodstock first aid interviews, are just incredible! Thank you!
Don't forget Steppenwolf
Grand Funk and
The Jimi Hendrix Experience
which featured Billy Cox.
Presentation ends at 4:08
Rip : the great Leslie West .
Thank you...
jeah mountain never forgotten this band heeeyyyyaaaahhhhh
And, I was there!
Still Amazing...
Pappalardi was forced to retire because of partial deafness, ostensibly from his high-volume shows with Mountain.
I seen Mountain perform at least 6 - 7 times mostly in Chicago's famed Aragon Ballroom.
Lucky guy
Sound and picture could be much worse...this is råk & roll history...thanks for sharing....
Andre the giant's short brother.
Jason NOT SO YOUNG wins the Super Bowl !! GOOOALLL !!! :D
Shorter older brother. lol
They would have been a force to reckon with in the ring
Sound mono and only on one channel??? And no MQ? Why do you think I clicked on this??? To FINALLY see the complete version of it!!!
I wonder if today's hotshot guitar players can appreciate Leslie West. His playing was so primitive by today's standards. He played like three notes (exaggeration, of course), but how wonderful those notes were. Just an amazing beautiful original sound. The man just had it. In spades.
back when you could openly smoke a cigarette without feeling guilty...
Yes, even NFL players smoked on the sidelines during a game back then. Crazy😂
This was a really strange weird concert. Some of the music was over the top great. The incidents surrounding this event were unique and my girlfriend and I had a total Fu'kn Gas!
See the movie, The Day The Music Died.
Call it fate. Leslie's Marshall amps didn't show up for a gig. They accidentally sent sunn coliseum head with 2 4×12 cabinets. With his single P90 les paul Jr. It made history as we know it. Guitarists right now today try to duplicate that tone.
First song is very early Sabbath-esque. Great stuff.
Notable trabajo en vivo de Leslie West y Felix Pappalardi
Saludos compadre hispano
Mountain Mounstruos del Rock por Siempre
I'm listening to this with headphones and the sound is on the left side only. Does anyone else have this problem?
Agreed. Using headphones, only getting a volume level through the left channel, no signal through the right channel that I can discern.
Well if you were an old man, you would have a proper stereo from the 80's, in a 15 pound metal box with a scratchy volume pot. There would be a button on there labeled MONO, probably somewhere between LOUDNESS and TAPE MONITOR.
All the stoner rock bands like Kyuss owe these guys a huge debt.
Hes the best and Jack Bruce, Felix Pappalardi I Mountain's cool band
Felix was unstoppable.
Such great chemistry within Mountain, gotta love 'em.
okay 2017 mountain is a band forgotten... For no good reason... If you like rock and roll if you ever heard of Jimi Hendrix or Black Sabbath you should know who mountain is!!
Mountain it NOT forgotten on the east coast !! Leslie still plays once & a while. He had his leg amputated a few years ago ! Corky still plays also !! They sold millions of records ! After Felix was murdered by his jealous wife, Mountain was not the same !
And not forgotten here on the west coast (of Sweden). Not by me!
We gotta educate Millennials!!
Not forgotten either in Sunny South of France Dude 🤪🧜♂️🥴🤯🤢
Black who?
that bass...Felix.
My favorites. Felix, Jack, James Dewar and of course John Wetton.
LP Junior is the best guitar Gibson ever made .. if you play one you know
I play a double-cutaway LPJ. I know.
My left ear is in another dimension
I was hoping they taped Mississippi Queen which was their biggest hit!
Professional footballers if they are honest will admit that they only hit gold once they played with a particular team mate. The magic on the pitch is a case of the sum being greater than the parts. Same in music, and West-Pappalardi was a union made in heaven.
