    Fons & Porter 6½" Quilters' Scissors: goo.gl/3vLAAw
    Fons & Porter Binding Tool: goo.gl/nD64gM
    The Fons & Porter staff teach you how to cut, sew, and perfectly bind a quilt. Learn about quilt binding corners and useful techniques that will make your quilt binding more accurate and efficient. Jean and Colleen suggest starting the binding along the side of the quilt instead of at the corners to make the process easier.

    They took points off of my quilt at our last fair because I didn’t miter my corners! I did mine just as you are demonstrating. I spent a year doing the embroidery within. So I got a second place in my category. Sold the quilt at auction for my church. It’s all good☺️

      So sorry. We should have had quilting in home ec class. Grrr. I love the challenge but it's the hardest physical and mental work in my old age. I'll never get to compete and win unless I get the "creativity" award (cool idea, bad work).
      See this vid is old. Hope you won a first prize since then by conquering the mitering!🙋

    Thanks so much for the video. I had learned to do this type of binding from a video before this one. It might have been one of your videos, but this time, I learned something new. The last detail of lining the tails of binding up: with the gap, marking both tails with a small dot and drawing the line on the fabric. Thanks, thanks, thanks!. That will save me from the guess work and give me a more precise stitching line. I simple cannot thank you enough!

    One suggestion I have for wrangling the quilt while joining the ends together is to fold the unbound quilt between the ends and use a large Wonder Clip to hold it in place. This makes sewing the ends together so much easier. I always do this when binding my quilts.

    I've been using a similar method of binding, but not drawing the line and I cannot tell you how many times jack and I have had discussions about where that line is. Mostly I do it the wrong way and I won't say how many times, before getting it right. This make is sooo much simpler! I did not hear in the video how much extra batting is being left around the edge of the quilt. Doesn't look like a lot...1/8"??

    I've no teachers but you tube, so I can only ask y'all. My original makes came from a Fons & Porter Halloween mag and they came out nice (for a first try, fantastic!😁).
    2 questions.
    1. Can you make straight binding (Not bias) if you are sewing the binding on w a binding presser foot? Bc the edges would have to be turned under first or they would fray. This would make a bulky edging, especially over the joining seams. Is there another way to do it other than sewing one side to the front and hand sewing the other to the back? And wouldn't you still have to make a little hem on the back to keep the edges of the binding from fraying?
    2. I understand the concept of joining but I can't get the part where you are turning the binding over and twisting it to get the sides together. Are both sides twisted the same? Does it matter? Is there a way or a tool or something to get this part of the binding to turn out w the right sides right and the seams going in the right direction?
    Sorry to be so thick but I'm a certified genius w ZERO mental manipulation skills. I struggle w all facets of sewing quilt pieces, etc together but persevere bc I'm determined to build some of these skills. The frustrating thing is that I sewed clothes and crafts for decades but run into whole new challenges w quilting. (Like, it's not a suit from a Ralph Lauren pattern so it's not made in neutrals w everything matching!)

      I think you were asking about how far to set the binding "in" from the edge of the quilt correct? I place my binding an "1/8" of an inch in. Your question wasn't about the corners correct? hope this helps.

      M

    • @6quilter4
      @6quilter4 7 років тому

      The pre-made blanket binding is done completely different. Sorry I'm slow to reply. Open the binding apply one edge to the back side of the quilt. (place it so that you are "top stitching" the binding in place with your quilt back facing "up" and the binding laying with the right side also "up"). Now turn to the right side, encasing the raw edge of your quilt inside the fold of the binding. Stitch again on the right side of your project to secure the binding. You will need to manipulate the corners to create mitered corners and stitch them to secure the fold.

    • @6quilter4
      @6quilter4 6 років тому

      No matter what width of binding you cut, the seam allowance remains 1/4" Judges preference does vary. The state fair competition in Iowa they want all mitered corners neatly stitched closed and hand stitching done with short stitches, smooth, without puckers or wavy edges.
