  • Ed outlines why he likes OPST's Lazar Line and demonstrates how to properly tie a triple surgeon's loop extremely tightly for a neat and strong knot. He also provides some helpful tips on line upkeep, handling, line weight selection, and more. If you've been thinking of switching to a mono running line or just want to learn how to tie a better knot, you should watch this video.

    Good stuff guys. This video helped a lot, particularly what diameter running line I went with for my 6 weight, 9.5 foot rod for sea-runs. I put a 250 grain head and paired it up with 25 lb Lazar line. I decided on an Albright knot to make a permanent connection between the head and the running line instead of a loop to loop connection Ed outlines here. I also like to eliminate a hinge point (loop to loop), but I might try it with this combo some day. I doctored my knot up just a smidge with some UV knotsense to make it slide through the guides.
    Love all the other insight Ed baked into his commentary as well.

    Great video Ed.Great advice! Why not release 'OPST knot tightening rubber gloves'?! I'm sure us fishermen would buy them!! Let's face it..we buy everything else!

    Had a bad experience with the 50 lb. Broke for no reason but a big fish. The 20 lb tippet held but I lost the entire head. Switching to Berkeley Pro Tec.

    What is your knot strategy for gel spun backing? ( trying to save a bit of room on a reel here)

    Great video. I tied a triple surgeon in my backing, and a triple surgeon in my lazar line. When I connect them in a loop-to-loop (just how i'd connect a loop to loop for line to leader) the backing sits nicely, but when i pull it roles over on itself and won't stay in that nice loop-to-loop connection im used to seeing. Is that ok? It seems like it's from a stiff material paired with a non stiff material like the backing.

    ever felt how much heat is generated by a knot tightening? weakens your knot significantly...a lil spit lube( I put the knot in my mouth on first pull...you'll feel the heat as you pull tight) goes a long way in preventing head loss if your line gets wrapped on a rock/snag.

    Love this! I've watched it twice. I'm using Lazar line to connect to backing like Power Pro, I am worried that this material is very thin and my Lazar line loop has a bend at the apex of the loop. Should I be worried about this connection point?

    • @OPSkagit
      @OPSkagit  3 роки тому +1

      I wouldn't be, but if you are a simple triple surgeons knot is a great option! You can tie the loop in the backing and LL large enough to loop-to-loop it all together. Handy and a lot easier!

    been testing the 30 lb lazar on a 6# and a 3# on the danish coastes doublehauling the "word" out of it...after 130+ hours the only flaw i could find was a loss of color. so i switched ends but could probably have kept on for another 50 hours in no concern. been tested in 0.8 C* degrees water up to 22 C* it never got stiff and coiled nor hot and "rubberband'y" it hasnt flossed kinked nor made dents in it self IE 10 ms backwind and you haul for your life and all the line in your bascket desides to shoot at once ever made a permanent mark. I have tested 9+ shooting lines so far and the only one that comes "close" in durability and smoothness is scierra's line whitsh i HAD to turn at 80 hours "kinked flossed and worn out"...in short aint ever gonna go back to anything else unless they find a spider on mars that can spinn something better! Thank You!

    The Ashley Book of Knots calls this a triple overhand knot. They do not list a "Surgeon's Loop" anywhere in the best knot reference ever printed. No such thing. Where did you get this? The internet?
