  • Hello to all my viewers and subscribers! Thanks for watching! In this video I wanted to show everyone my 416 Barrett single shot rifle. It is so much fun to shoot and the 416 Barrett cartridge is the one that usually wins the KO2M (King of the 2 mile) competition every year (although it's shot out of a very expensive custom gun!). This gun wouldn't really be a contender to win that event, but it is so great to shoot and inspired me to get my Barrett Model 82-A1 in 50 BMG which is a semiauto rifle that uses a 10 round magazine. I'll show that gun soon, but wanted to show you this one first. I'll get some video this summer shooting this rifle and the 82-A1. Believe it or not, this rifle kicks like a 22LR!

Very cool, thanks for sharing! I'm starting my journey into reloading .416. What ends up being your cost/rd?

Thanks for watching! Well, once I have the brass (the most expensive part) it's only $3-$5 per round since I've had the powder and primers for years. Bullets are easier to get now, and you don't need the Cutting Edge bullets for precision. You used to be able to get the cool monolithic bullets from Barrett, but not anymore--and I don't know why. Hornady makes some nice bullets as do a couple of others. Unfortunately, the brass has been out of stock at Barrett for a long time (and I won't pay the premium by ordering it from other places) so I'll order 20 fully loaded rounds from Barrett every once-in-a-while and that helps me stock up on brass. One tip: ANNEAL after every firing and check for trim length. I hand anneal with the Tempilaq paint at 750 degrees. I do have a Giraud annealer that does the job too. Now you can buy dies from Lee (when I started reloading 416 I had to find a guy online that made custom dies to get them). If you don't anneal after every firing, the necks will split.

@@docgsreloading7985 Wow I really appreciate the solid advice! That's a huge time saver. Yup, I bit the bullet and bought a few boxes of .416 to start with at $9/rd with the intentions of reloading since brass is so hard to find. $3-5 is much more reasonable.
I'll come back and comment if I find well priced/in stock .416 brass - i've been checking every so often too. Thanks again

I suspect the trigger on the M99 is a match trigger. It’s very smooth with minimal take up. Would you say this is a 2 stage match trigger? I heard the M81 50 BMG doesn’t group well as an anti personnel weapon out at 2k yds. What king of groups do you get at 200 yrds? I still haven’t taken mine out to the range to zero. Is 200 yds a good distance to zero my IOR Valdada Cruzader scope? I have the Ivey 60 mil adjustable cant one piece mount.

      Thanks for watching!
First, yes, I'd say that the M99 (mine is in 416 Barrett caliber) trigger is a match grade 2-stage trigger with the first stage being very minimal take-up and the second stage having a break that you'd find on a Geissele trigger--it's that good.
I also have the 82A-1 Barrett (semiauto) in 50 BMG, and I do zero mine at 200 yards. Both my M99 in 416 Barrett and my 82A-1 are the ONLY rifles I zero at 200 yards, everything else is at 100 yards, even my 338 Lapua Magnum.
I would say that for sure the 82A-1 in 50 BMG is anti-material at 1,000+ yards. It would be hard to hit a torso size at 1,000 yards with the 82A-1, maybe because it's a semiauto and even the barrel is on springs to absorb recoil. I'll do a video on my 82A-1 pretty soon.

What press and dies are you using to reload?

    • @docgsreloading7985

Thanks for watching! I started reloading 416 Barrett a long time ago, before anyone had even really heard of it. I use the Lee Classic Cast 50 BMG single stage press and I found a guy online who made custom dies for the 416 Barrett. I bought a whole set from him including a micrometer seating die, neck sizing, and FL sizing dies. Now, Midway USA has a lot of options for 416 Barrett: www.midwayusa.com/reloading-dies/br?Cartridge=416%20Barrett&cid=702
My dies are all 1-1/4" (which is more than enough to handle not only 416, but the 50 BMG I reload) and not the 1-1/2" that some offer.

Is the barrel of M99 removable?

Thanks for watching! Yes, and you can purchase replacement barrels from Barrett--not cheap, but it's nice that you have the option to replace it.

    What rings are those?

    • @docgsreloading7985
      @docgsreloading7985  Місяць тому +1

Thanks for watching and your question! Those are Barrett scope rings and available through their online store. I’ve just about changed all my scope rings over to the American Rifle Company brand. Those are much nicer and easier to mount with absolutely no problem with the scope twisting when tightening the ring. The Barrett ones in this video are the usual design and more difficult to mount the scope in. Please see my video on the Schmidt-Bender scope review I did where I comment on the American Rifle Company’s rings. Thanks again and I hope this helps!

That bubble level you have on your scope . It’s that called the Flatline Ops ACCU/LEVEL Articulating Scope Level Matte? I might get that next for my Barrett.

@@clos4209 Thanks for watching! Yes, that is the one I have on that scope. I like that you can do a fine adjustment from the closed or open position to get the level perfect. Plus, it’s nice that you can use it it in either the open or closed position since it’s easily visible. I have that product on pretty much every scope I own.

    Any regrets on the .416?

Thanks for watching! NONE WHATSOEVER! Reloading it was a challenge more than a decade ago when I first started since dies weren't readily available (I found a guy online that made custom ones and ordered from him), but now with the KO2M (King of the 2 Mile) competition, it has become a lot easier. Lee makes a really nice set that you may have to special order, but at least they make them now. Also, I used to have to purchase all my bullets from Barrett, and now Cutting Edge and even Hornady make target and competition rounds that are reasonably priced. It's a far superior cartridge to the 50 BMG and at 1,000 yards we have never had a problem putting every shot in the center of a 0.5 MOA (5") bullseye. It's impervious to crosswind since the bullet is so heavy and it's traveling over 3,000 fps.

    .416 superior to bmg.
