      I found the color threshold by accident. My daughter had somehow fiddled with the setting and things were not filling properly anymore so I had to look into fixing it.

    Good video.
    I have a different add gradient to the hair. If you selected the layer, (in this case the foreground color layer) using select from the layer menu, when you stamp the gradient down you would not need to use the eraser around the hair. It will only stamp in the selected area.
    I do this all the time now. I often use select, and make a new layer. Good for highlights and shadows too etc.

    If you wanna do gradients, you can have color strips side by side with no space in between and then Gaussian blur them if u have them on the same layer and u get a smooth gradient

    Try to hit "select" on the layer, that You want to be your highlight or gradient or whatever. Then go to a new layer and You can work only in this selection (clearit, add color, paint in it) ... You don't have to manually erase whats outside... I hope You will understand what I mean. It's a bit difficult, because I'm not native to english language.

    super usefull tips! thanks for sharing! I'm especially happy to now understand the refference layer! It's going to save me alot of time rather than jumping in between layers and using automatic select on ink layer.
    quick question.. whats the difference between alpha locking your lines layer instead of just using "select" on it before recoloring the lines?

    • @chartflipper
      @chartflipper 6 років тому

      Select (if you mean the automatic version) only takes a certain amount of the lines. The amount varies depending on the threshold you use and on how much the lines stick together. That can work, if you manage to select 100% of the lines' area. With alphalock you can be sure to have 100% "selected". Plus it's much faster.

    • @chartflipper
      @chartflipper 6 років тому

      Oh - the selection method has one advantage - as I can see:
      When you use it for example on the "foreground colors" layer, you can select - for example - only the skin color. Once you have the selection, your added gradient wouldn't have to be trimmed into shape with the eraser.

  • @Abc-qs8ir
    @Abc-qs8ir 7 років тому +1

    Brad there is a Procreate tool that will save you hours of time !!'
    It's a lasso tool, that lets you select and outline an area,
    Then when you are highlighting or colouring the area, it will not allow any colour to appear outside that area,
    You could have used it when colouring the guys Hair with the fading orange, (and then you would not have had to erase the extra orange that went outside the lines )
    This tool saves HOURS of erasing afterward :)!!!!!!!!!! :)

    • @Abc-qs8ir
      @Abc-qs8ir 7 років тому +1

      You just click the third circle icon on the top left of the screen, of the tape,

    • @thebradcolbow
      @thebradcolbow  7 років тому

      I thought about putting that in there, for this tutorial I thought it added extra steps i would explain in this video even though it's faster than erasing manually.

    • @Abc-qs8ir
      @Abc-qs8ir 7 років тому +1

      That makes sense!! :)
      The lasso tool also works in reverse, (it can lasso an outline in the middle of the page and will only allow shading/ highlighting outside that outline) as well as the other option of within the outline chosen :)
      It would have saved me HOURS of unnecessary erasing had I known about the lasso tool :)
      Also: :)
      I heard of the idea of copying the blank ink outline layer and putting this also down on top of the final layers too ;) (as this saves unnecessary erasing from highlighting shadows / brightness also :)

    • @Abc-qs8ir
      @Abc-qs8ir 7 років тому +1

      I think you should definitely show how you use the lasso tool in a new video :)
      Awesome work Brad as always!!!!!!

    If you are going to create so many layers to facilitate the gradients, why not just flat your colors and use them to create alpha lock or selection layer masks so you don't have to erase away the non-gradient areas?

      Darren Albertson it's a Procreate thing

    • @darrenalbertson-digitaldus6227
      @darrenalbertson-digitaldus6227 7 років тому +8

      A Procreate thing? I'm pretty sure I'm using the same Procreate app so I'm not sure what you're talking about 🤔
      He's already made color breakdowns on his character on a separate layer. All you have to do is set the gradient where you want it like he did, choose your character color breakdown layer, go to Selection mode, select automatic, touch/threshold the shape you want to select, invert it, go back to the gradient layer and then choose Cut and it will clear all the excess color outside the shape you want filled with the gradient without having to spend all that time erasing it away.
      I know that sounds complicated but it's really quick when you're doing it and a lot faster than having to erase the excess away every time.
      Or you can just use the reference layer to put all of your different colors on separate layers (a process called "flatting"- the same thing he did except putting each color on its own layer) then selecting the layer content, inverting it in Selection mode as explained above, going to the layer with the gradient you've set, and then choosing Cut to clear it away. Again, no tedious and time consuming erasing away the excess.

    • @darrenalbertson-digitaldus6227
      @darrenalbertson-digitaldus6227 7 років тому +2

      It's no more accurate and far more time-consuming than what I described above-I've done it both ways. There are times when you have to do it the more time consuming way, but it's always best to find shortcuts when you can.

    Greetings from Ohio! Love the channel and tutorials. I realize this one is kind of old, but wouldn't it have made more sense to color the hair with an alpha locked channel or first select the hair shape so that there's no need to erase (and potentially leave marks behind)?
