You... You literally just saved my life.. Im still a newby at digital art and I didn't know how to color over the lineart and.. that little moving layers just.... Saved me...
Great tutorial. I like the approach where you have the finished layers ready to show after you’ve briefly demonstrated the technique. Like the old cooking shows where they’d have the finished dish in the oven already.
I really love your casual yet well defined approach to speaking about your art process. You seem very down to earth and explain things in a direct and friendly manner. Thanks, subscribed!
YES!!!! this is the best tutorial I've ever found on painting in procreate!!!! everyone else uses Adobe or other programs, and I'm sooo happy I found your channel!!! definitely earned my sub!!
This was an outstanding intro for someone moving from traditional to digital art! The one thing I'm baffled by, no matter how many videos, etc, I watch is the layer adjustments such as the ones you used, like multiply. Any suggestions? 😊
This is some of the best 20 minutes I’ve spent on this app. I digitally ‘direct paint ‘without lines art because I have a huge issue wrapping my head around this like I can with oils or acrylics. Thank you so much this helped A LOT
I have been doing this all so wrong, thank you endlessly for this post! My fave bit is the tip to leave the line work around places like eyes, this is going to streamline my process so much!
Thank you for this tutorial. I was gifted an iPad Pro with the Apple Pencil for my birthday and I’ve been overwhelmed with all the options in Procreate. I promise to take this knowledge and create some awesome artwork.
finally got somthing ....no one really explain like you .. i havebeen frustrated already .. its been almost one year... but not got any one who actually explains it free.. it help,, really IT HELPS A LOT. for peopel like us.. m desparate to learn properly but no one actually giving it free.. finally got some one to learn from step by step,, finally... thanks thanks.. thanks.. dont know how i should thank you for this kind of explaination. please please please make some this kind of videos where students like us who can realy learn art fundamentals,, colour theory etc etc, i dont even know what are those term to say actually . you know lot. a lot. it helps a LOT.. i know skilled peopel like you are busy alltime.. if it is possible then please make some videos for becoming like a good artist. i dont know that r those all things that make a skilled artist,,,, you know it . you are good. please if possible then please give us your knoledge, please i know now i can not buy. but one day i will be able to . but i desparetly want to know this things any how. i will wath your all videos.. i just got you now. i will deeply follow your all instructions.. it help,, colour slider basic i have learned now.. i dont how deep it is, but you cleared lot of things now.. you man soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo good. thanks thanks thank you soooooooooooooooooo much...
I love this tutorial. I learned a lot from it. I'm planning to use this art method approach in all my illustrations. I have a lot to learn but this method will help carry me through.
Getting an iPad Pro tomorrow, just started watching your vids, right away I subscribed, this video very helpful, I'm not new to digital arts, but never used procreate, I feel I definitely learned something here
I'm only halfway through this video and have learned so much wow. I finally understand the warmer cooler concept most of my shadows/lighting has always looked muddy/flat because I'll color pick and darken or lighten without moving towards warmer or cooler levels because I didn't quite understand what that meant until now. The way you break everything down to it's simplest terms is truly remarkable thank you! You are very good at teaching and I can't wait to learn more from you.
I think what was so appealing about this video was how in depth it was because I have been trying to figure out how to best do this and I came up with nothing. Also I am wondering about how you get such good textures on your work.
I'm kinda speechless after watching this! There were So Many useful (and brilliant) fundamentals in this video. I don't use Procreate, but you covered the ideas so well I should be able to replicate everything in Clip Studio Paint, or other programs.
Awesome! I'm glad I found you and Mike Henry. I just purchased my iPad Pro. I've been tired of doing things the old fashion ways. I want to break into the digital world and it looks like I found some good stuff to learn off of. Thanks. 👍
finally found a full guidance thankyou so much ~ most people doing tutorial and suddenly their lines disappear and that thing is not quoted in the rest of the tutorial
Very cool video, super informative, my only real critique is I would really like to know why we're using the multiply layer on some and not on others, and what that does.
Omg this helped me soooooo much. I’m still very new to digital art and I didn’t know how to paint over and under line art so this really helped me a lot
wow, I am happy I came across your youtube channel. You demonstrate how to do this painting over the drawing via layers in procreate very well. As I am a hobby artist and don't really know how to do digital drawing n painting
I would like to know what you did to the “bright light” layer. It looks like you merged it to the “shadow” layer... 🤔 it was around 11 minutes...thx so much
hey this is old, but I'm pretty sure he deleted the demo layer. I noticed that he had pre made everything he's explaining, and he's partly demonstrating and then just deleting that layer and showing what he ended up with.
This is such a great video, this will definitely take my color schemes to the next level! Can you do a video that explains the different types of coloring effects, some of which you used in the video (e.g. Multiply, color dodge, color burn, etc.)? I can experiment with them but don't really know how they can be best used.
setting the background to gray, the 50 opacity light colors come out darker for me because they allow more of the background through. The shading works backwards over gray.
Thank you for making this. None of my family is that involved in art except for my uncle, but he doesn't really have time to help me draw. I've been confused about how to color until now.
Hey Austin, it is me again. I have a question about this brush. I can't figure out how do you make it that doesn't matter how many times you paint over the same stroke, it won't add color. Please let me know, I tried all the settings and Glaze option but it still adds up, creating uneven color.
I may not be the man himself, but I have some tips for you to get your color smooth. The way he does it is, after using a textured charcoal block brush to put in shadows, light etc., is to go in with the blur/smudge tool around the edges. Make sure that the opacity of the smudge tool is under 50% or it will drag color instead of blend. I usually use the airbrush tool to do this because it's already smooth. I hope this helped!
This was an amazing tutorial! Thank you so much! It was so good explained and easy to follow. Could you recommend a book or a (paid) video tutorial, where this explained in detail. Thanx! Keep the good work!
Is there a way to take a section of a picture in procreate and repeat it in a brush? Example; let's say you have a picture of red bricks and you want a brush to just continue making those bricks with the same color and quality of the picture. Is there a way to do that?
How do I apply this same technique to human skin tones? I was trying to draw human skin and "making it more blue or red" didnt work because the skin tone was in a red-orange brown color and moving it to blue for shadows just adds yellow and changes it out of the hue group I wanted to keep.
Look at a video on properties of light and how shadows form...it’s mostly common sense in my opinion. You just have to think more on where the light is blocked. Real life references will help.
Im so honored you painted me in this vdeo
Danish Dragon 😂
Bruuuuhhhg sammmmmmmmmmmme
That’s friggin funny
No that’s obviously me 🙄😂
Danish Dragon hey guess your my twin
You... You literally just saved my life.. Im still a newby at digital art and I didn't know how to color over the lineart and.. that little moving layers just.... Saved me...
Oml same since I also use Procreate 😅
Ikr , plus I just got procreate a few days ago and I’m dying 🤣
"Make sure you're on the right layer, folks." Story of my !@#$%^&*damn life. :P
Finally someone explains this perfectly
you are the godfather of procreate. i love you keep it up
Dude. I just got a new iPad and this is by far one of the easiest to understand videos I've ever seen. Thank you so much for this!
These aren't normal shadows, these are...ADVANCED SHADOWS
BananaMan haha they're one step below "navy seal shadows"
I got that, SpongeBob reference haha

This was enormously helpful for me at this point in my learning process with Procreate. Thank you so very much for sharing this process!
I have been doing this all so wrong, thank you endlessly for this post! My fave bit is the tip to leave the line work around places like eyes, this is going to streamline my process so much!

This is the MOST helpful video I have watched in trying to learn digital painting. You are a legend
you are the best, I seriously need so much walk through and step by step and it kills me when its a tutorial done through a sped up drawing
finally got somthing ....no one really explain like you .. i havebeen frustrated already .. its been almost one year... but not got any one who actually explains it free.. it help,, really IT HELPS A LOT. for peopel like us.. m desparate to learn properly but no one actually giving it free.. finally got some one to learn from step by step,, finally... thanks thanks.. thanks.. dont know how i should thank you for this kind of explaination. please please please make some this kind of videos where students like us who can realy learn art fundamentals,, colour theory etc etc, i dont even know what are those term to say actually . you know lot. a lot. it helps a LOT.. i know skilled peopel like you are busy alltime.. if it is possible then please make some videos for becoming like a good artist. i dont know that r those all things that make a skilled artist,,,, you know it . you are good. please if possible then please give us your knoledge, please i know now i can not buy. but one day i will be able to . but i desparetly want to know this things any how. i will wath your all videos.. i just got you now. i will deeply follow your all instructions.. it help,, colour slider basic i have learned now.. i dont how deep it is, but you cleared lot of things now.. you man soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo good. thanks thanks thank you soooooooooooooooooo much...
Following along with this right now and my art has NEVER looked this good. I can FEEL myself reaching a new level.
You're pretty much the best teacher on yt for shading, this tutorial helped me a lot
I love this tutorial. I learned a lot from it. I'm planning to use this art method approach in all my illustrations. I have a lot to learn but this method will help carry me through.

This was your best video by far
Jordan Buchi thanks! What made it the best? What do you want more of
I think what was so appealing about this video was how in depth it was because I have been trying to figure out how to best do this and I came up with nothing. Also I am wondering about how you get such good textures on your work.
Jordan Buchi use brushes like the charcoal block so it paints texture in. If I need some smoothed I can always go back in with the blur tool
Good video. Thanks.
austin batchelor Another thing that makes this one of your best is because this is something every digital artist wants to learn, thanks!
I'm kinda speechless after watching this! There were So Many useful (and brilliant) fundamentals in this video.
I don't use Procreate, but you covered the ideas so well I should be able to replicate everything in Clip Studio Paint, or other programs.
I'm not even using this program, I'm here for that drawing, lol I love it
Eskalia I just found your channel and I love it. You need more subs!
Todoroki kun!
Awesome! I'm glad I found you and Mike Henry. I just purchased my iPad Pro. I've been tired of doing things the old fashion ways. I want to break into the digital world and it looks like I found some good stuff to learn off of. Thanks. 👍
Christian Mejia I hope it helps you. Good luck in your digital art ventures!
finally found a full guidance thankyou so much ~
most people doing tutorial and suddenly their lines disappear and that thing is not quoted in the rest of the tutorial
Probably some of the most helpful art tutorials on UA-cam... and I've watched a lot.
This is the best tutorial I’ve seen yet! Thank you!
Thank you!! This helped me sooo much!
Very cool video, super informative, my only real critique is I would really like to know why we're using the multiply layer on some and not on others, and what that does.
Thank you so much for this tutorial I really learned a lot more about lighting and color, which has been my struggle, so thank you.
Omg this helped me soooooo much. I’m still very new to digital art and I didn’t know how to paint over and under line art so this really helped me a lot
The gray background color advise is a game changer.
Can't wait to try this technique. I'd love to see a short video on how you paint eyes. Thanks, as always.
C0raBr0wn I can make that👍
I originally thought this was a Bobby Chiu illustration when I saw the thumbnail. You’re awesome! Thanks for the advice!
Hands down best video I've seen on this process. Brilliant.
I have been watching this colouring video for many times. Good teaching.
Great tutorial! Painting is definitely my weakness in digital art. This really helped me a ton
wow, I am happy I came across your youtube channel. You demonstrate how to do this painting over the drawing via layers in procreate very well. As I am a hobby artist and don't really know how to do digital drawing n painting
I've been trying to figure this out as well. Thanks for the tut!
Great imagination on this guy. Creative!
This was so helpful, thank you! Do you think you could make a video about drawing/coloring cloth? (Not a shiny cloth, more like cotton) Thank you!
Terrific video!! One of the best CG painting tutorial I have ever seen. Grettings from Chile.
It’s one thing to bring my pencil sketch from paper to procreate. But the biggest challenge is to color it to my own liking. Good advice.
I love this channel so much! I use nothing but procreate with an apple pencil, so these help a ton!
This is such a great video, this will definitely take my color schemes to the next level! Can you do a video that explains the different types of coloring effects, some of which you used in the video (e.g. Multiply, color dodge, color burn, etc.)? I just posted a video explaining layer modes
This is how a tutorial should be, "step by step"not a speed painting. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. :)
Thanks for the tips! I was interested in that brush set you were using
So cute yet daunting
This video was AWESOME and immensely helpful for understanding how to fill in line art!!! Thank you so much for taking the time to put it together
As an inexperienced digital painter, this was very helpful! Thanks SO much!
This was really helpful to a beginner like me. Thanks.
Subbed. Had questions, but now I'm watching all your videos to be proactive. Thanks for putting In the time to teach a pleb like me. Sincerely
This is a great tutorial. Thanks for putting it together. I like your process flow and the final output.
its actually amazing why you can do and how thoroughly you explained thanks!
Hey so when I set the shadow layer to multiple the colors are coming out black
Wow so you pretty much solved a problem I've been having for years now O.O Thank you so much ! I even took notes \o/

Ponderer Of Pointless Dreams I'm happy to hear that. Practice makes perfect. Keep it up!
There is a lasso tool that means whatever you draw around freehand , that when you shade or color it will not go outside the lines :)
i've been looking for a channel like this in ages thank you so much u helped me alot
Thank you!! I'm trying to paint a digital portrait and I always get stuck on how to color is. This was very helpful 👍
I had no clue how to make proper art until this thank you so much!
Your channel is just incredible. I love your tutorials so much!
Thanks!
wow your art is really amazing
thanks for taking the time to make this video, for a novice like me, I’m sure it will prove very useful
Where or When to use Multiply layer vs normal? I forgot thanks Great art work!
How do you get the brushes to be side by side like that? Do you have custom brushes? It looks great
great stuff. gonna use some of these tips in my drawings. thanks man.
Awesome. Can I ask what the multiply tool does??? I am new to this.
This is an excellent tutorial, thanks!!
How do get the color and blending so smooth for each layer?
Great job! Hey how do i create my painting round brust like yours? The way it tapers at the end..
Thank you for this process ❤you're a big help
This is Really COOL, very good process. Thank you So much!!!!!
Amazing tutorial, this is gonna help me a lot for my paintings
Can you tell me what brushes you used for each layer like what you used for flat, shadows and highlights pretty please?
I love your style. I love it.
Yes! I want to see them all
Excellent Vid. Been using Procreate for about a year. What does changing the layer to multiply do?
This is such a great tutorial- thank you !
Hey Austin, it is me again. I have a question about this brush. I can't figure out how do you make it that doesn't matter how many times you paint over the same stroke, it won't add color. Please let me know, I tried all the settings and Glaze option but it still adds up, creating uneven color.

This was an amazing tutorial! Thank you so much! It was so good explained and easy to follow. Could you recommend a book or a (paid) video tutorial, where this explained in detail. Thanx! Keep the good work!
Hristo Stefanov I'm actually working on a course that will go into slot of detail on this. Aaron blaise has really good info on this as well.
FINALLY. This is exactly what I needed!
Is there a way to take a section of a picture in procreate and repeat it in a brush? Example; let's say you have a picture of red bricks and you want a brush to just continue making those bricks with the same color and quality of the picture. Is there a way to do that?
You are so helpful thank you! Can't wait for your next video
Thank you for sharing. Really nice step by step tutorial! Your vids will for sure help me see some improvement in my art
How do you know when to move the hue slider left or right?
Amazing drawing and tutorial!!!
OMG this is what I've always been looking for, thank you so so much.
How do I apply this same technique to human skin tones? I was trying to draw human skin and "making it more blue or red" didnt work because the skin tone was in a red-orange brown color and moving it to blue for shadows just adds yellow and changes it out of the hue group I wanted to keep.
This video is a fantastic resource
This was good but how do you know so well where the light goes and how the light falls and how the shadows form. Where can I learn this?
Marco Bucci's light and shadows tutorial would be nice
Look at a video on properties of light and how shadows form...it’s mostly common sense in my opinion. You just have to think more on where the light is blocked. Real life references will help.
Amazing video! so much good information.. and always helps that your art is awesome!
Thanks for doing this!
This is a great tutorial, I learned a lot, thanks buddy
Simply amazing.
