To minimise the risk of it happening, when you close the back up you should press in the door release. Stopping the snap sound and causing the damage in the first place. This is if you still have the original plastic latch, although if you’re watching this you have already done the damage 😅
Great solution! I had to buy an OEM door to fix mine, they are very hard to find now. Between the door replacement and the grip I could have bought an F5 from the beginning. (when I bought my F100 used it was about $200 cheaper than the F5 that was for sale at the time). I love my F100 but Nikon really cheeped out on the door. Thanks!
Thanks for the nice review of my latch kit. I designed this back in 2022 when my F100 developed a broken latch. I also sell a similar kit for the Nikon N80/F80 which have the exact same faults. Speaking of the other kits on eBay, they are all Chinese knock offs. The sellers all seem to be exact duplications of each other and they mostly sell knockoff car parts. Who knows what material they use, who knows the quality and by the looks of the pictures they do not even take the time to file/sand away the machining marks from the cosmetic side.
Can confirm the Chinese knock-offs are pretty crap. I wanted to save a bit of money over the original (sorry...) because adding the postage to the UK via ebay got a bit expensive. The filing guide was fine, but the metal plate had really rough edges, and the "lip" at the bottom didn't actually align with the camera, so it wouldn't sit in place properly. Lesson learned, time to go and buy a proper one!
@@RossFinnie Yea, I wish I could improve on international shipping costs but it is tough to do. The rub on international shipping is the Chinese government has nice subsidizes for their companies so they can basically ship them for far less internationally then we do here in the states. All I can do to counter that is to provide a superior product and superior service. I do want to say that I currently have upgraded the standard latch kit to stainless steel for added corrosion resistance. They do take more time to file and sand since stainless is harder than mild steel but they will basically last forever. I do sell the original one in mild steel for a discount.
@@UrielX1212 thanks for the reply! Fully appreciate the factors at play - would’ve definitely preferred to get the real deal to start with, but it was costing me less than half (£20 vs £50) and seemed like it’d be an easy thing for a Chinese factory to get right. Will definitely be getting the stainless one once this return process from the crap knockoff is all sorted out!
I just did this procedure. First I bought the latch on eBay by submitting a $20 offer with free shipping to a Chinese seller. The hardware you receive is the exact same regardless of where you buy it. Second, I didn't remove the back as that is unnecessary. Mount a longish lens in the camera and open the back. Put a thin paperback or some other shim so that it is parallel or above the desk surface. Next use masking and a piece of paper or plastic to isolate the work section from the rest of the camera medical surgery style. Install the template and lastly forget the dust generating file and use a razor knife to carve down the existing latches. Carve them flush to the surface of the snap on template. Remove any shavings by flipping over and tapping and then remove the template and masking. All of this takes five minutes.
They are not the same. The Chinese copies do not bother to remove machining marks/sand the latch. There also very slight dimension differences. Removing the back takes seconds and reduces the chances of getting debris into the shutter. Makes zero sense to me to keep the back on.
Just a FYI to folks, the link Dan posted here is the legit designer and maker, made and designed here in USA. There are now some Chinese rip offs out there on eBay so be warned. If its coming from china its a knock off.
Now what we need is the rewind forks repair kit!!!

Yes unlock the back door whilst holding the back door closed!!! And lock the back door with the lock in the open position.

wish this was around 2 years earlier... so sad when my f100 door latch broke and i sold it away cheap :(
I actually released the kit back in April of 2022. Sadly it does take time for word of mouth to spread.
Такая проблема на "любительском топе" - это просто неприемлемо, по моему скромному мнению!
