Wow! Thank you for this video Gary. This is the first time I’ve watched one of your videos. I am a lifelong photo enthusiast and as I start to transition from my professional career I am looking to step up my photography game, starting with getting some new equipment. I just had a visit from my friend the UPS delivery guy who brought me a brand new Z8 with a couple of Z lenses and assorted accessories. I have been looking for someone who can explain better the how and why, aka the science, of photography because I can always take better control of something if I understand how and why it works.
I’ll be watching more of your videos, thank you from Boise, Idaho, USA for sharing your knowledge.

  • @Thwakum
    @Thwakum 3 місяці тому +3

Interesting and thanks for that. I use the six stop or 6400 rule.
    Which goes:
    Set up camera.
    Select manual settings.
    Set ISO to 6400.
Take light reading using preferred metering option
The result in seconds at 6400 is minutes at ISO 100 at the selected aperture.
Works for me, and as it is mathematical adaptable to other ISO e.g. if 15 stops too much meter at 10, attach 15 stopper and lengthen exposure by 50%.
    Just a thought.
    Hope it's useful

Gary, I've only recently (within the past week) discovered your channel. All of your videos are absolute gold! I have been down the rabbit hole watching many of your videos in succession. I particularly am impressed by your long exposure/minimalist/fine art photography. Something I have never thought of, and now I can't wait to get out to practice all the many tips I have accumulated over the past few days.
    Thanks for the great content!

Absolutely stunning work, Gary! The way you capture mood and atmosphere through long exposure is inspiring. The balance between sharp, decayed structures and that ethereal, misty blur really draws the eye in and creates a powerful narrative in each shot. The black-and-white treatment enhances the drama even further, letting texture and form take center stage.
I'm working with a Canon EOS R6 but can't afford the same high-end filters yet, so I've been experimenting with alternative techniques like shooting in lower light (dawn/dusk), lowering ISO, and stopping down the aperture to achieve a similar effect. I've also looked into stacking more affordable ND filters, which has been helpful so far. Your breakdown of the 'magic number 30' has really simplified the process for me-thanks for sharing your knowledge, You have a new subscriber. I've not posted any of my work yet as I am still learning... And does somebody else said it's very strange because I started watching your video at 6:00 a.m. so I've just woke up lol.

Excellent Explanation. I used to teach people to think of a pipe with water flowing. The shutter speed determines how long the water flows, thus how much water(light) is obtained The size of the pipe is the aperature and thus determies how much light passes per time period. the friction inside the pipe is the ISO, how fast the water willl flow.

Thanks for the video Gary it’s a great explanation for long exposure This is probably a really stupid question but why does the histogram move to the left when you alter the aperture or iso a stop of light but when you then lengthen the shutter speed it doesn’t move the histogram back to right? Thanks again for the video 🙏

I really like the clarity of your explanation and the simple 30th of a second to 30 seconds hack/heuristic with a 10 stop was new to me. Of course, it all goes out of the window with film photography, where reciprocity failure means those speeds get longer once you go over a second depending on the film. But then who shoots film these days? Oh hang on, yes, me.

Great tutorial! I do a bit of long exposure photography myself, but never even thought of the "30" rule, despite it being so easy.
Quick note: it's not always necessary to use a remote control in BULB mode. Some cameras, including many Canon, have a "bulb timer" option in the menu. That's what I use when I have to go above a 30" exposure. And always with a delayed shutter, of course, to avoid shaking.
