- Nikon's F100, the scaled-down F5, included many key F5 features, such as the great viewfinder and metering system. The F100 is a relatively uncommon camera, having arrived at the dawn of digital when many film users started to switch over to DSLRs from their traditional film cameras. So despite being relatively young cameras, they're somewhat uncommon on the open market compared to many other camera models. The F100 is a full-features camera that can do essentially and photographic task easily and without much hassle. This video series examines the camera's interface, operation, and custom function menus to guide users through how to use the camera well and effectively.

thank you for this. saved me the hassle of digging through manuals.
I hope you don't mind receiving gratitude for a video that's over a year old. This was incredibly helpful. I'm dialed in, so to speak, and ready to shoot with my F100. Thank you!
Thank you! And yes, it always helps when I know my older work still helps people.
Thanks for sharing, particularly having the timestamps in the description!
Thank you!
Thanks for the great series of videos. I just picked up a F100 in excellent condtion and the videos are very helpful, especially for custom settings. And this is coming from someone who is very familiar with using Nikon cameras!
Thank you!
Another very helpful videos. I just purchased an F100 that should arrive Thursday and am trying to learn as much as possible about it before I run the first roll of film through it. Thanks, David.
Thank you and very nice!
This is 7/25/24 and just last week I missed out on one of these. Maybe another will come along. I always look for your videos... good stuff.!
I did set up my F100 per this video. Thanks
Thank you! I'm glad to know that this helped you.
Thanks for the videos... very informative!!! I've just got my F100 the day before so these really help.
Thank you and very nice!
thank you for your great work ✌🏼
Thank you!
Hello,
I just found your channel and within days of purchasing an F100 in excellent condition. I bought the camera to replace one I had for years that became inoperable and I'd misplaced the manual for it. Your video on Custom settings was helpful for me as I set up the camera according to my shooting preferences. This was very helpful, informative and well done and you now have another subscriber.
Thank you! :D
Thanks for part 2 & 3 for this camera. Watching your videos helps me make up my mind as to buy a camera I am interested in or not. Putting cash away also helps.
Thank you!
Thank you so much for your videos, they are so clear and concise and very helpful. I'm a 70 y.o. who's just bought an F100 and started developing B &W film and your guidance is invaluable to me. I'm a bit tech resistant but your videos give me much more confidence. Love your dog.
Thank you! Steinbeck my dog says hi. :D
So helpful! Thank you
@@tashahurley8341 thank you!
This really helped me out I was very confused before I watched this video, thanks!
Thank you!
continuous drive mode... multi exposure?
great for analyzing a golf swing.
:D
Super helpful! Thanks for making these!
Thank you!
Thank you very much. These videos on the F100 are extremely helpful. Do you have any on the N90s?
Thank you and I do not. I haven't had one of those recently enough to make a video.
Very informative, I feel I am ready to go out and shoot now. Thank you very much 🙏🏽
Thank you!
splendid thank you
Thank you!
Thank you, great explanation and camera. I was wondering if you can disable the automatic roll back of film if the back of the camera is opened. (Mid roll) I ask this as I like to let light leak and on previous Nikon camera's I have owned, they have allowed me to do so with out recalling the film.
Thank you and, IIRC, this camera can't be opened mid-roll. I thought it had a lock that prevented that.
Thanks for this. Is there not a setting to leave the leader when the film rewinds?
I can't remember specifically. I thought so. If there is, it's in this video. The shortcuts in the description might help indicate if that's a function this camera has.
@@DavidHancock No it wasn't, but thanks.
Thank you, SO MUCH
Thank you!
Great vid dude you saved me a lot of headache🙏
Thank you!
the multiple exposure in continous mode sound like having sport actions decomposed in time (hence a pretty strong underexpo per shot)... at least that's how I see it
That could be a use.
Thanks so much for this tutorial. is it possible to enable all of these settings? Or there are only limited numbers to enable particular custom settings! Thanks in advance!
Thank you! You can't enable every setting at once because some conflict (for instance, you can't both rewind film to leave a leader and not leave a leader.) However, every one of the functions will have one of the options selected when you finish setup, which means that one of the choices for each setting will always be active when it's supposed to be.
@@DavidHancock Thanks so mucn for the prompt reply! I guess I have to dial in to these custom functions to somehow familiarize myself thereto. It is a matter of personal preference that I have follow at the end of the day! More power!
Thanks for this...question, in Custom Function 21- AEL/AFL Button: what do you mean by Toggle in position 3?
Thank you and toggle basically means it works like a light switch. With a press button, you have to hold it down to work, like a blender. But by toggle it works like a light switch, which means press it once to turn on and a second time to turn off.
@@DavidHancock thanks, I set for that that's the way I like it but, I still can refocus just exposure stays locked. I think you mentioned it locked both. I only like to use it for ex with spot metering.
Thank you very much. I was just wondering about setting 14, I see a use for it, but the condition is that the first exposure reasonably freezes the subject then the following exposures are longer. So something like 125th/60/30 while maintaining aperture settings through manual etc - Essentially a 'shutter bracket' on the same frame but with continuous shooting?
What I'm wondering though, is with continuous mode on, does the multiple exposure setting on the left ISO dial become irrelevant (somewhat) then?
Sorry, quick version I think, when using 14 - 1 (with continuous) = multiple exposures occur on a single frame until the shutter button is released and the film moves onto the next frame when depressed again?
edit: apologies, I have access to the manual, but, as you know, it can be hard to break down as what you want to know can jump from page to page and where camera prioriy settings might clash or something. I'll figure it out!
Let me see if I can clarify.
1- CF 14 is multiple exposures. So that's for use when taking multiple exposures on the same frame. With that if you have the ME function set to 2 or 9 shots, CF 14 controls how the shutter works. So with setting 1 you would need to push the shutter once for each exposure -- twice for two shots, nine times for nine shots. With 2, you can hold the shutter down and the camera will the the allotted number of multiple exposure frames.
2- No. The ISO dial is always vital to enabling proper exposure.
Let me know if that clarifies or not.
CSM#19 is for this situation: You know your zoom lens is not sharp being wide open, so you would close down the aperture, say, by 1 stop to gain some sharpness. Then, as you zoom in or out, your aperture will always stay away from being wide-open and give you good sharpness.
@@linuxphysics thank you! That makes sense.
9:30 That continuous double exposure actually is a feature that makes me want this.
I'm curious what you'd use it for. It did occur to me that it could be used to show processes for things like advancing a camera's frame or how a part of an object moves while the rest is stationary, but I can't figure out another use. What were you thinking of to use it for?
@@DavidHancock Sports. I can do a sequence of action shots in one frame. The camera has to be stationary but with the right exposure the result would be cool.
@@DavidHancock You might get good results with fast moving subject, flash and cont. double exposure. You could get similar images with alexey titarenko but that could be done with single mode. Nice feature.
Great vid!! Could you do a run through of Nikon F5 CSM please?! 👌
Yes, but it won't be immediately. I have an F5 (it's not behaving reliably so I need to see if it has an issue or not, and I haven't pinned down the trouble source yet.) The F5 is high on the to-make list. Like at the top.
Hi David! I'm looking to buy another camera to my collection. I have pantax mx, Zeiss Ikon 520, Flexaret 4. I am struggiling to choose between: Nikon F3, Fuji GSW690 II or fuji GA645w. Any suggestions?
Those are three very different cameras with very different uses. I would look at what you don't have and start there. The 690 will give you huge negatives that are almost large-format quality. The 645 would probably be easier to carry, though the 690 is pretty small. The F3 is a great cameras but won't truly give you anything you don't have now, except an excuse to buy lenses for a different system. Ultimately it's your decision what your needs are, but look at what each camera offers that you currently lack and go from there.
@@DavidHancock I know, the format's are all over the place :) I think I'm slightly intimidated by the 6x9 format of Fuji 690. And it's size. It's still small in comparison to Zenza Bronica S2 (hasselbads cheap substitute, maybe I will go for it as well). I know 690 is the best choice, yet somehow I gravitate towards the F3. Maybe it's the option to shoot waist level. Thanks for your opinion!
Hi I got an f100 and an err starts blinking whenever I use my g lenses and it doesn’t let me use any other f stop expect 2.8 and when I change to f 5.6 for example the shutter stays at the widest f number and the err starts blinking after the shutter button is released . Does anyone else had the same issue or any suggestions ?
Your G lenses won't work with the F100.
@@DavidHancock yes but how’s that possible though, f100 accept full compatibility with all the g lenses
@@hanscristianheineken5446 oh, you are correct. I thought G lenses were incompatible with the F100. But I just looked it up and they only work in PASM modes. So to verify, you have it set on one of those modes, correct?
If yes, make sure your electronic contacts are clean and if the issue persists check with the Nikon user forums. Someone there will likely knows the answer.
👏
I'm annoyed there is no setting for NOT rewinding the film completely into the canister, but leaving a little strip out. There is such a setting on my F5, but I actually prefer using the F100 for a number of reasons (like better usability with fully manual lenses, where I get an error on the F5).
That seems like it should have been an included feature. I'm not sure why it would be left out since it's only a function of software and shouldn't have cost anything to include.
useful
Thank you!
mmhh where is the dataport mentioned?
Did I miss that? Dangit.
@@DavidHancock well i used to get all exposure data. And on a F90(x) it offers you to set custom functions which are not accessible by the buttons. An adapter can be made for 5-10 $/€ and most software is now free. You dont need to buy the Meta35.
@@klofisch Hi Peter. Any chance of sharing more info with the cable or how to get or make one? Also the software.
Thanks.
