Awesome video. Your excitement is contagious too! And that is why we take photos, not for the perfect shot, but for the memories. Film lets us remember both the subject and the feeling we have as a photographer when we took the shot. I have an F100 and a D750 too and am just as excited as you each time I shoot!!! Enjoy and I’ll definitely watch more of your videos!

I love your enthusiasm and excitement. It's how I feel every single time I shoot a roll of film :). Loading, removal, processing, holding the negatives, so on, so exciting and every time I get the rolls back from the lab or pulling it out of the processing tank is like a birthday or Christmas present. I love never knowing what I will get, good, bad, okay, or where I took the shot. I also never worry about about the number of shots, if I like what I see in the viewfinder, I click the shutter and move on. Love film!

I shot a lot of film 1999-2006. It just made sense and wasn't too expensive if you developed your own film. You could push your film an extra stop just by leaving it in the chemicals longer. Everyone shot weddings with film .Digital was too expensive back in the day with memory cards and hard drives for backups etc. The D1 was so easy to overexpose whites/highlights. Finally went digital when the D80 launched. Still sometimes use my D80 & D90. I wouldn't switch back as film prices are crazy these days. Kinda funny how when film was $3.99 a roll everyone was complaining they didn't have a digital slr. And now that digital is cheap and film cost $10 everyone wants a film camera lol

Your film photographer friend gave you some good advice. I own many Nikon film cameras that I shoot for time to time and my F100 is as close to a DSLR as any camera gets. I use my trinity of Tamron G2 lenses to get full auto focus and exposure OR fully manual if I like. I also have the Nikon F4S but much prefer the F100. What made you select the Ilford 3200 film stock as your first roll and at what ISO did you shoot it? Did you get the camera repaired or just buy another one because they are reasonably priced?

How would you say the level of grain on the ISO 3200 film compares to ISO 3200 on a digital camera? Did it end up being too grainy at times that you felt perhaps a lesser ISO film might have worked better? Lovely pictures! I’m scouring eBay for an F100 😉

@@lukewtcleland My first film camera is a Konica Big mini. Fun little thing to use, but it has its limitations. Then I got a Minolta Hi-matic S, which is a zone focus, auto aperture and shutter camera with a manual advance leaver. The 38mm f2.8 lens on it is SHARP. And the flash works wonders. It has less electronic parts, thus would last longer. If you are interested in getting a point and shoot, I would recommend looking into this direction instead.

Hi Luke :) Just stumbled across your channel by chance looking through some reviews of one of my old favorite film cameras, the F100. First of all love your enthusiasm about film, and that you got excited after your first roll and want to shoot more :) Also some nice romantic photos in there, ad i can really share in your passion for shooting there photos on film and in Paris of all places with your significant other.
My connection to film and F100 is a long story. But i started on film ( since im an old fart by now! ) in the 80s, had my first few film cameras around the age of 6-7 and always loved taking photos. Mostly old point and shoots around that time until the age of 20 were i started to be more serious about maybe getting an SLR or something to change lenses etc.
Studied film photography in school and brought my first "proper SLR" in the form of a Minolta Dynax 505 Si i believe.
At that school i was really smitten and i saw so many nice cameras being used by other students, my dream was to have a Canon EOS 1 or a Nikon F4 or such. Poor student at the time i got help from my mother buying a used EOS 1, a tank of a camera. Loved it and used it for a couple of years, A friend of mine shot Martial arts competition with his F5 i believe, and i got to try that out.
Was in awe by it and said to myself i wanted one of those one day and really liked the look of the Nikon cameras. They just oozed pro hehe.
After that i worked as an assistant to a photographer here in Stockholm and he used a Nikon F100, was the first time seeing one. At that time it was quite an advanced machine, and being the baby brother to the F5 it was held in high regard and something you used when you wanted to shoot something fast moving but wanted a smaller camera body than the F5 to run and gun :)
Using one with him realizing its potential i saved up to a used one a few years later, and it was my dream camera at the time.
I took that on my travels, and shot many of my favorite shots from that time with it. That continued on after digital came around , changing film photography and photography in general forever.
I was very late "giving " up on film, and had a hard time letting go. The last film camera i had was the F100, i then got into digital on a Canon Eos 30D and later on the D700 which was the first digital camera i felt made it worth shooting digital instead of film.
I let my F100 go then, and then i took many years, right up until a year before the Pandemic hit when i suddenly just knew i had to start shooting film again. Little did i realize many had the same thought! And also that film was on the rise again hehe. So happy to see that :) Do you know which was one of the two film cameras i had to get that first phase starting it again.......yes, the Nikon F100 :)
I got myself that and and Nikon FE2. And it felt like coming home again :) After that i got lost in the tornado of film photography again, trying out many older cameras, shooting medium format, lusting after some cameras i never had the chance to try as a poor student :)
Its been a wonderful journey, and im SO happy im shooting film again.
Im also SO much better than when is started shooting film, and digital have helped me so much in learning to see the light, how to use flashes etc. Things that would have taken so much longer on film.
Like you say though, film IS very forgiving, but the F100 is probably one of the "safer" cameras to get into film with. Even so id say starting to shoot with flashes, and master film especially when shooting portraiture getting the proper light shooting backlit or other tricky lighting situations and no getting faces etc under exposed or the opposite shooting payed work is not always a fun time hehe. And not mentioning shooting older manual cameras with older vintage lenses...but that is what i LOVE about shooting film in comparison to digital, that unpredictability :)
I usually love the photos coming out with some wild results even more because of it, especially if it was not expected.
Funny thing, i actually sold that other F100 a while back, not because i did not want it but needed money to try another camera related thing out, then immediately regretted it.
This week i got myself another one in great condition, and going to hold on to that one along time now. Such a great camera :)
Have you ventured further into film after your F100, another favorite camera or film to shoot with?
    Now, enough with the ranting...😅
    /regards Martin.

Glad you're finally back with an F100 after have a few of them. They are great cameras, I just need the get my back door fixed. I currently have it kept close with tape.
I have! I have a medium format camera Contax 645. I use that for my wedding photography business. And a few other rangefinder point and shoots, like the Nikon 28Ti. But i'm looking forward to trying out more cameras, just need a bit of a budget for it!

Awesome video Luke, great shots, some lovely mood in there. Back in the 80s and 90s I shot sports in the worst of Northern English winters by kick off time at 2pm I had to shoot Iford 3200, at Half time I had to push the next roll to 6400 I was still only getting 1/125th at 2.8. The grain from those shots was like golf balls. Now I shoot sports at night iso 5000 2.8 very little noise it's almost too easy, these days zI miss those golf balls. I love mixing it up now digital or film depends on what mood I'm in.

The best parts of film photography, in the 2020s, is getting away from the mindset of instant gratification while emphasizing intentional actions.
The Nikon F100 works with F-mount lenses through the G-type. It cannot use E-type lenses like the 105mm f/1.4E, 28mm f/1.8E, or any of the FL/PF lenses.

  • @mrca2004

First, test a camera BEFORE going on a critical shoot. Have a second body loaded say with color film as a back up. 3200 at 1.8 in full sun could require faster than the 1/8000 shutter speed. Film is forgiving? Kyle Macdougall on YT tested HP5 with proper exposure then one stop down to 2 under then shots to 6 stops over. Take a photo on digital 5 stops over and you get a white rectangle. With film... a perfect exposure. The F100 can shoot auto exposure with dead on matrix metering... just do it... auto focus using back button focusing., power advance and 1/8000 shutter speed. I handed mine to a friend, a nikon guy, and asked him to take my photo. He told the shot like he had used it forever because it is his d850 with film instead of a sensor. I asked him how he liked shooting film and he said he hadn't in years. i told him he just did. He was shocked. You can shoot it fully manual but will have power film advance. But for run and gun, it's fantastic. Just back from a shoot with it and an f5. F5 hp5 at 1600, f100 portra 400.

Hi Luke! I am a digital wedding photographer and recently I got into film and -like you- I love it. I just have a small mamiya sekor 500ttl and I photograph my family just for creativity, fun, and to document our memories. But I have a dumb question and maybe I should know this since I've used digital photography for so long 😂. But with film- if you buy a 400 ISO, do you need to manually change your ISO on your camera or will it just shoot at 400 ISO because that's what it's made for? I've been changing it for the light (just like I've always done with digital) but this video (and others) made me wonder if I am doing it wrong. 😂

    • @lukewtcleland
      @lukewtcleland  2 роки тому +1

      Hey Hannah!
That's awesome! No dumb questions here - to make you feel better the same thing crossed my mind when I first started shooting film. So on a film camera, when you set the ISO, it will be telling the internal meter what the ISO is. I wouldn't recommend changing it mid roll. But I suppose you could set it to say 320 if you want to overexpose your roll, and not shoot at box speed ( box speed is the ISO that the film is listed at, say 400). I don't set the ISO on my camera because I always use a hand held light meter, so I only set my aperture and shutter speed, and I input my ISO that I want to meter for into my meter. Hope that helps!

OKAY! Great question. So no, I didn't edit them at all. So I had no idea what I was doing on this first roll. So I'm not exactly sure what I did. But I'm pretty sure I remember metering at 3200 ISO, which would explain that higher contrast (I'm guessing my lab pushed the film but I don't really remember anything about that). I just did another video where I metered at 8000 ISO and it has that same contrasty feeling. But yeah, I love that rich contrasty look. Hope that helps!
