    Speech pathologist here. The part where you talk about your own style of ending a phrase (26:00 where you end the word shame like this: "shame-AH") is actually a really good technique to get rid of excess tension in your throat. It's like hitting a reset button before taking your next deep breath and when I practice with people who are using too much tension in their everyday speech patterns this is something I will give them as an exercise.

      Can you elaborate on the exercise you give them? I think I have too much tension in my speech, which translates to my singing, which translates to my attempt to learn screaming of course. I lose my voice just from singing without any distortion.

    One person who very clearly saves a scream for studio recordings is Matt Honeycutt from Kublai Khan TX. To be quite honest I don't know how he does his technique in studio. It's incredibly unique. But live he switches to what seems to be fry screams. His studio vocals seem either very taxing on his stamina or his vocal cords. Either way man is a beast.

    • @The_JustJoshing
      @The_JustJoshing 2 роки тому +56

      Matt Heafy from Trivium does the same thing. Live he does sort of a fry scream, and in the studio he just screams straight from his throat. He did it live until 2014 when he blew out his voice

      I’m pretty sure Vincent from The Acacia Strain does something similar as well. Beefy false chords with lots of voice in the studio (or something else) and all fry on the stage. I’ve seen TAS and Kublai Khan both a bunch live and vocally they sound completely in person

    I'm so glad you made this, not just for me who's been at it for 11 years but for people starting out. That fucking sound at 6:23 made me shake dude. I started trying harsh vocals when I was 15 and my false cord-type screams had that sound all over and, just as you said, it didn't feel like it hurt at all, maybe a little feeling of strain but hey, I was used to thinking harsh vocals were a bit risky, didn't know better. It came to a point, not even 6 months into doing those screams on a weekly basis PLUS not taking proper time to rest after getting mononucleosis, my voice was 100% FUCKED. Trying those screams again sounded even worse and I even became scared of trying. Now I'm doing great, It's been years of learning how to actually do that stuff proper, and a lot of what I learned came from your vocal tips live/on socials and seeing you as a great standard for a modern metal tenor guy.
    But the thing is, You've also grown a fuckton as a vocalist since that video from 2016, you were already good but now you've learned a lot about how YOUR voice works and how it translates to other people's voices. Mad fucking respect.
    TL;DR You're doing a great service man.

      Lol I have kind of a similar story as well. I I was around 14 yo and while straining to mimick Chester Bennington's screams (of course all in vain lol), I just damaged my throat so hard that I tasted some blood. Stopped talking altogether for a few hours and after that I somehow tried easing into it, don't even remember how or when I actually got it right cause it was so long ago. But eventually I found myself doing (somewhat safer) fry-ish screams. They can tire me a bit after a long while, but I rest right after, and I've been steadily improving ever since, thanks to Justin and Kardavox academy's videos (check him out, he's a lifesaver!) At this point people I've showed my effort to actually love the screams.

    The first tip with regards to the false chords trashing your voice is something that I experienced myself but have never heard anyone say before. Been doing vocals for about 4 years and In all honesty I had no idea you could get low exhaling. So I started doing inhales.
    Fast forward 4 years I figured out what a false chord was and the terminology and I’ve been working on it ever sense.
    But I won’t lie my inhales have morphed into something unique and beautiful. I can compete and sound just like a false chord screamer.
    I use it a lot less now since I want to keep screaming for as long as I can.

    • @The_JustJoshing
      @The_JustJoshing 2 роки тому +1

      Same here. I've done inhales for about 3 years and they don't sound super sucked in, for lack of a better term, unlike most inhale screamers sound like Decimate The Weak era Winds Of Plague or Oli from Archspire when he does them which is not very often. I've never had any major pain with them at all, sometimes if I push too hard it hurts a tiny bit, then I stop for the rest of the day. I know I should learn how to do a proper false chord or fry scream though, given all the bad rep that inhales get. I have the foundation of the fry scream down but haven't been able to give it much power. False chord I completely can't figure out.

    • @FlobsterforLobster
      @FlobsterforLobster 2 роки тому +2

      @@The_JustJoshing sucked in was the word I was looking for. For me it doesn’t sound like a inhale when taking a deep breath. It has distortion and and meaty sound to it, now and with mouth and tongue manipulation I can get the sound to replicate tunnels and all those.
      I can also activate my nose and suck in air from nose to get this weeping demon sound and when I add a little more throat action I get this gnarly demonic sound that is super unique.
      Prolly not a good thing tho lol.
      As for fry, thats my main technique, I can do all the different renditions of it. It’s been about 4 months or so since I started doing false chord and I can activate at will now.
      Keep going at it man stay away from inhaling as much as you can I’m trying to do the same.

    That old video taught me a lot. I learned how to manipulate my sound quite a bit, and it's really helped my range. I can extend higher than a mid, and my deeper voice lets me make good use of my lows. This was insanely informative yet again!! I remember watching 2016 Justin showing me these ultimate techniques. Listening to you talk is incredible dude, honestly you should start a podcast, bring the band on and talk about your creative process and writing.... but back to what I was here for, this video is amazing. Glad to hear it from the perspective of a vocal coach, years ago the only things you could find on screaming were awful, crazy YT vids, warped tour short videos of a vocalist saying “I’m with the vocal coach of warped, she really helps me out, she knows her stuff” and then that’s all you had! Came along your video, then came along my band and further vocal lessons now I watch this and understand it so much more in depth than I once did. I understand the major differences in what I was... ahem... attempting and failing to do once upon a time, I managed to scrape myself up to a point where I like to think I’m a semi decent vocalist now (without a band or desire to do anything anyway lmao)

I've been able to add some false chord to it in previous months but holy shit, you just made me do my first controlled full false chord low I think. The sound you show around 43:40 really helps me get into the type of low I want to be able to do (hybrid). Kind of modeling after the sound of Phil Bozeman from Whitechapen or Will Ramos from Lorna Shore, who have these tight sounding false chord lows without airiness.

Literally without exagerating, first couple of trys and i already screamed like i had years of experience. That shit gave me a huge confidence boost and started inhaling a whole fuckin lot. I even did a full studio recording session with just inhales and it sounded great. Next couple of days i had a sore throat but it was fine afterall. I can get some pretty nasty screams with inhales, but i have no fuckin idea on how to translate them to exhales, every shit i try doesnt even come close to those inhales. Would love to take 1 on 1 lessons but i'm tight on budget, so when i get my hands on some money we gotta make it happen. Much love from Romania and stay safe bro

    "Your favourite vocalist could sound amazing and have literally no idea what they're doing!" Devin Townsend comes to mind here. Incredible voice that seems to have only gotten better with age, but he's said numerous times he has no idea what he's actually doing to sound the way he does.

    i have to say, i look at a lot of vocal lessons for learning to scream (i am interested in screaming just for fun but i'm not in an environment to practice lol) but the balloon comparison was actually so helpful. i've probably watched hundreds of lessons that constantly throw terms like vocal flaps and false chord and this and that, none of it ever made sense to me. actually seeing something similar being SHOWN gives me a TRUE understanding of how different screams actually work. this is a great tutorial, and i'll definitely keep this saved somewhere if i ever live alone 😅

    Thank you so much for making this! You're a huge inspiration to me, and I learned to scream from your old tutorial. I'm so glad you made this video correcting your old one because my biggest issue I think is that I have been majorly overprojecting since I didn't really understand the difference between false chord, hybrid, and fry screams. I think you'll help a ton of people with this vid

    I've seen a lot of videos on the subject, but this is the first one where I understood the techniques. Most of the videos do not properly explain how I can physically implement the techniques. But you explained that really well. Thanks a lot for this. And it's great that you have corrected your old video.

    Dude, when u meantioned you were sitting in your grandma´s wheelchair, I almost had a stroke... from laughter.
    But seriously RIP!!!
    Btw your video actually taught me the beginning of false chord growls, mid false chord screams and couple of others, but I do indeed agree it was a dangerous game for us viewers, but I just listened to my body and it kind of did it on it´s own over time. Right now I´m working on fry a lot and cleans and some serious results have happened over time, but I´m also taking courses and stuff to learn more, bc I was missing a lot of knowledge and I was confused with terms and stuff like proper support, compression and placement. I could only go from 0-100 when doing compression and screams and my flexibility sucked with compression, but luckily nothing seriously bad happened over the long time abuse I put my voice thru, of what I kno. Probably bc I listened to my voice and tried to avoid the things that were uncomfortable, and now things are much more clear and fun. I´m now using the break to shut off my true vocal folds, and using mix and supported headvoice to lean into the screams and yeah all that good stuff. There is so much to singing and screaming and everything in between, including a lot of constent amount of self discovery and self awareness, and I still can´t believe the amount of time it took me to get here, from the age of 15/16 to almost 21. So I would really advice everyone to take courses and talk with someone who knows their shtt, bc you are gonna make a lot of mistakes when learning it, even from a pro bc of self discovery (still it´s a lot more safe tho bc u would have learned the basics), but without any guidance it can make things so much worse. That´s my wise words on the journey of singing and screaming and I´m not even done, I still have victories and failures and the failures will probably never go away, but learning/seeking help for something u might want to do for the rest of your life, should be taken seriously.
    Edit
    Thank you for this video Justin, really appreciate that you are redoing the video for bad terms and techniques, also love the music it´s very inspirational and freaking brutal.

    FINALLY someone explains the “sing from the diaphragm” properly. Eventually I figured out wtf every tutorial out there meant by this. But for someone to break that down as to what it what it means, fucking huge. I’ve been doing extreme vocals for around 14 years, Justin talks about stuff I never thought about. This goes to show, you are NEVER done learning how to scream. Justin, you are a beast vocalist and an awesome dude! You were fun as hell to watch in the Musician Mansion. Keep up the badass work man! 🖤🤘

    Justin being the type of guy I got inspiration from to even START doing vocals from the start, and with how it holds up nowadays, I feel like I've still gotten at least somewhere, after around ~2 1/2 years of progress. Granted, they're obviously not perfect and I'm not comfortable doing anything with them yet, but they're not horrible...this new take or kinda analysis of the former technique (I suppose formerly) video helps explain it more to me and add more things to add to warm-ups and practicing. Keep being a gremlin, dude. Good content as always.
