Look at 40 year olds now, they look super young. People take care of themselves more than ever before, everybody looks younger than previous generations did.
Seriously! Most people who do screamo tutorials on UA-cam leave out so much key information or they’ll just give you vague instructions, you would think it was rocket science. Now that I learned, I realized how easy it was to teach people how to do it.
I appreciate this as well... We've been a band for a few years, but there's ALWAYS more stuff to know. You can always be a better singer, guitar player, drummer, etc... Thanks man, I learned a lot... Even reinforced some things I already knew... The universe guided me to this video...
This reminds me, I met Spencer Charnas from Ice Nine recently. Very nice guy but I noticed he spoke to me in the most gentle voice ever. After watching this I think I know why 😅
I thought it was fucking hilarious😂 and really put into perspective that you don't need to overproject. Best instructive video I've ever seen and that part one one of my favorites!
So I discovered Tallah today. And I was like, wait, this lead singer looks like that guy who did that video on different styles of screaming. Bit of googling and here I am. Just wanted to say, awesome work guys, I hope you blow up. Figuratively.
Fucking. Finally. A REAL video from a touring musician that doesn't give the generic "breath support" and "with your diaphragm" with advice for the aspiring touring musician. Dude, this video should be shown to every vocalist cause it's got some killer advice. My favourite was the whole "don't try and emulate recording sound with your raw vocals" bit. It's so true!.. Much love dude, your stuff is SICK.
What an awesome video! And it's all so true. Even for non-metal vocalists. I had a lead role in a musical where we were heavily rehearsing for two weeks prior to the performances. Without a mic. That meant singing, speaking and shouting against a 55-piece-orchestra for hours on end. Rehearsal started at 8 am. I got up at 4am to let my voice wake up and drank tons of tea. Around 6 am I did some light warm ups and got ready to leave the house. Rehearsal was from 8am til 6pm. 6 days a week. for two weeks. And then: Performance week. I had to watch as my vocals deteriorated throughout the week. I was overprojecting, because I couldn't hear myself very well. What could have been an easy 30% clean note before ended up needing tons of focus and 90% support. During collective warm-ups before our last show I came a fourth short of what I'd have to sing on stage. That was scary. But somehow I got through the show without dodging any high notes. But it must have been sheer force of will at that point to be honest. So what I'm trying to say is: LISTEN TO JUSTIN! Don't overproject (don't sing against a 55-piece orchestra without classical training for almost 3 weeks). Don't overuse (don't go too hard during rehearsals when you know you'll have to keep the pace for 3 weeks).
I honestly needed this. I appreciate this more than anything. I've been practicing for almost 7 months, I do my best to care for my voice. The advice that you have provided has probably lead me to understand some things I am doing wrong and will definitely tweak them.
I've been screaming for about 9-10 years now (I'm 22 now, I started when I was 12-13), and how to be controlled with my screams was one of the most important things I ever learned, because it not only made it more comfortable to scream, it made my screams better. The texture of your scream is way more important than how loud it is, and it's way easier to shape the sound when your screaming is controlled. It's also way easier to hold a scream for longer when you're not going 100%, since instead of pushing all the air in your lungs out as fast as you can, you're just letting out as much as you need, which in turn gives you more to go on when you're trying to hold it. Seriously; beginner vocalists, listen to what Justin says here. It's very important for both your vocal health and the quality of your vocals.
I’ve been screaming for ~6 months and 75% percent of everything I can do I’ve figured out on accident. That’s not to brag, for anyone scrolling these comments, what I’m saying is: as long as it feels comfortable, don’t be afraid to experiment just because you haven’t heard of a specific technique. And if you think you can’t do something, just keep trying (as long as it doesn’t hurt. If it does, change your approach). I could not figure out proper compression and breath support for the first couple months that I started getting into harsh vocals, and then one day it just clicked. Pretty much the same happened with my fry screams; I could do false chord (poorly at the time, resonance was iffy), and in the process of just messing around I realized I was getting a little bit of mixed drive, and then I was able to reverse engineer it from there. My fries still sucked for a while after that (and I still don’t think my low fries sound all that great), but I could at least do them, and I can do mixed drive. Same situation with pig squeals. My current thing is to get my fry lows to sound better and my highs higher.
Between this and your other video where you went back to critic your 10 techniques video. I've learned more than the countless videos I've watched and things I've done to try and scream. Wow. What a blessing.
We've been tricked, led astray, completely bamboozled 😭😭😭 Lmao, kinda knew but also didnt want to know, but eh its out now. Either way mad props and respect for taking the initiative to help preserve aspiring voices. Much love to all y'all!!
That's the most realistic advice I've ever heard, especially the whole pre-show screaming over the noise. I can tell you pay a lot of attention to detail. Thank you for this video.
As a vocalist, even though I've been doing this for 10+ years, it took me about 7 to find my screaming voice, the one I'm comfortable with. One of the reasons why is your scream tutorial. I just wanna thank you for doing these videos. You're helping, being an inspiration and even an influence on so many people :)
I've been attempting to teach myself to sing and scream using various techniques I find on the internet, as well as experimentation. I've always had that subtle fear of doing something wrong and screwing up my voice. This video is absolutely excellent, thanks for the tips! I never even thought about over-projection, both in my singing and my screaming, I think that's probably part of why I can't seem to hit high notes without strain. Thanks again!
Great video Justin! As a singer who continuously works on his technique, this advice applies not just for screaming but for normal melodic singing too. Even when you are belting it out or projecting your voice, you are not supposed to push too much air or it can lead to excessive tension - if you have good resonance that can only be obtained by good technique, that on itself will do all the work. You need some healthy tension (support) to ensure your voice is stable, but you are not supposed to add unnecessary tension or you can hurt yourself 👍👍
Man, I love you so much; I am a Highschool music teacher on México and when my students ask me what they can do for screaming technics I always start with showing your videos; thanks a lot
Wish I knew this sooner. Imean I knew this but wasn't completely aware of it. Blew out my shit 2 months ago. Have aways looked out after my vocals and have always been relaxed and never really over projected. But since I started a new job as cashier I'm always talking 24/7 and that never really gave me the opportunity to fully rest my chords. Ohwell, shit happened. Haven't done vocals in 2 months but my whole neck muscles are straining for no reason. My thyroid is swolen. Im on the recovery train Please everyone look out for your voice. It's the only one you'll get.
Been doing it for quite sometimes.. and now this is why I love you Justin! I've learned a lot how to prevent injuries like this! Yes I've been doing shit like that. Going full 100% on vocal (Because that's me. I'd love to jump right in. To show people that you can have fun in it.) Then I've got like hurt myself a lot. Been trying to find a way doing things correctly. Always can count on you thanks!
I have no idea when they'll drop of course, but I am very excited for the Three gods and Me vocal videos. It is interesting seeing you sing and scream without the performance aspect.
This is amazing advice! I got started screaming in part due to your two videos on how to scream. The biggest take away from this video, for me, is to not over project. It’s definitely something for me to work on. Thanks for the video, Justin!
Thank you so much for this! I just recently joined a band called Permafrost as the lead vocalist. Been working on my vocals for the last 4 years. This video has been incredibly helpful
I remember my firts attempts in a band, screaming without considering the techniques and hurting myself every sunday. someday I found I wasn't forced to push my voice that far, that it was possible to produce a good scream without turning purple. I wan't to sing again so thank for your advices, you're an amazing vocalist.
I first stumbled across Tallah-We,The Sad and listened to a bunch of songs that ye played, then I was watching a lot of videos from this channel that were from like 1-3yrs ago, and was like "damn this guy is so good, i wonder if he is in a band bcz he's def killing it" and I learned a lot from your vids and now I actually looked at this channel's vids and discover that the vocalist from one of the bands that I like IS the same person of this channel that taught me about singing/screaming!! It's truly amazing, keep making music Justin! It's honey for our ears, you're really really skilled, I hope you keep it up! Your fans support ya
This is my struggle dude - thanks for voicing this. People never seem to understand why the cool rock star singer is sitting in the corner drinking tea and not taking to anyone... Need to forward this to my bandmates.
Hey everyone, just a small piece of POTENTIALLY useful information for you all. That part about breathing in the hot fumes of the shower being good for you, please make sure that your water heater is fully functional! Your hot water needs to reach a minimum of 60°C on a weekly basis for a few hours to kill of potential bacterial growths in the water, most notable the bacteria called legionellosis, which causes the legionnaires disease. It reaches your body via the fumes from showers. It SHOULDN'T be an issue, especially in modern homes, but it's still an issue to this day and since it's a hidden potential harm I just wanted to let anyone interested know that the risk at least exists. As per usual, older or more sickly people are at higher risks against the bacteria.
As someone who is a bedroom vocalist, I really appreciate this. There are so many bad habits I didn’t even know I had because I don’t play live at venues. Thank you!
This is what I needed to see. I always wanted to become a brutal metal vocalist, and I thought the best way to do it was to simply scream the lungs out and project a super loud voice. Always thinking that vocalist who processed their voice were "phony" or "fake". And while some styles definitely benefit from such rawness, it's defnitely not very healthy to destroy your vocal chords just to sound different. Cheers! ¡Muchas gracias for the advice!
Justin has such a soft kind sounding voice and seems so gentle, caring and sweet lol. It’s nuts that such a gentle looking and sounding guy can sound so scary. He’s freaking awesome 😎
I'm not a vocalist (though I do kind of want to learn how to do harsh vocals at some point, and get glottal compression down for voice acting), but as someone recovering from chronic laryngitis from GERD, a lot of this information was surprisingly useful. There were a lot of things I didn't realize strained one's vocal cords (like speaking monotone), and understanding what to avoid and the important of resting one's voice is very helpful!
Dude, just thanks for your content. I‘m aware that there is a lot of bs content in whatever topic on YT/ the internet. So findig people like you is such an important task and I‘m so happy to have found you! 🙃
Took a lesson with Justin a couple minutes ago and I have to say.... DAAAMN THAT WAS HELPFULL! I highly recommend to contact him. He explained it so good and after one hour we both saw some progress. Definitely will do a couple more. Such nice, much friendly, much roar. See you in 2-3 weeks man
Man, I remember years ago when you put out your first how to scream video. Good to see you’re still around and going somewhere. Btw, I never took your advice (I already knew how to scream), but I thought the sounds you made were pretty cool and sounded cool over the song you were demonstrating with at the time. Lol I do remember though when I was younger and trying to learn at like 13-14 (I’m 30 too), I definitely did a lot of wrong things. Some of them sounded cool, but it hurt soooo bad. I would get phlegmy, get that metal taste in my mouth, lost my voice. It took me like a full year to realize I was doing it all wrong. I agree that how it looks and what’s actually happening can be super deceptive. Like when I do vocals I make all kinds of angry faces and kinda thrash about. It gets me into the zone. Once I get in that flow state and I let the music take over, I immediately stop overthinking things. Even if I cant hear myself, I know how and where by body should be resonating and relaxed. I’ve learned to literally feel what I’m doing. The physical feeling and the sound have a direct connection to me. That’s how I learned to sing clean vocals too. I know it should feel to make certain sounds. But when I was younger I definitely pushed waaaaaay to hard.
I discovered you, live. On your tour with All That Remains, in NJ (2022). I don't think the venue, or your sound tech did you justice. (gain on vocals was way to high) The recorded music you have is way better than what I heard on stage.(I went inside when the doors opened) I hope to hearing more in the future, because your band sounds like a bunch of influences I share. Here's to Tallah making more music!
Justin, as an old fan, I am so proud of how far you've come, and I hope you go as far as possible. You are extremely talented and skilled, and you deserve every bit of success you get. Godspeed man. Hope to see you on some sort of metal hall of fame or something. Metal is better with you around. Much love. Peace.
Corey Taylor is the number 1 culprit for over-exertion. Don't scream like early-Corey Taylor, kids. You'll fuck up your vocals like 15 year old me. I got really discouraged for a while because i was constantly losing my voice after doing like 15 seconds of All Hope Is Gone, but then i figured out that i barely needed to exert myself, and found that sweet spot in my diaphragm.
Great job! Just came across this. Truly mind blowing, appreciate it! Oh yeah, Tallah is gonna blow up from the "For the Recognition" video alone. Keep at it!
Thanks, I got so much inspiration from you, and for two years I've been working purely on false chords. And yes, I was over projecting while training, thanks for the information. I will look after the advices you gave. Oh, and I'm not a kid, 26 years now, but you inspired me into start screaming, wish you the best.
Thanks for this video, man! I especially needed this because in hearing your advice, I actually noticed that yes, I am overprojecting my vocals, so in that way you like opened my eyes on how to better keep my voice healthy. Appreciate ya, my guy!
I can so relate to the part about alcohol. I did it at one gig just to calm my nerves before going on stage, damn I sucked that night. Since then I've never touched alcohol before going on stage.
I've never seen anyone talk about overprojection before, I've been trying vocal techniques and hurting myself due to overprojection, I've always assumed I was doing them wrong! Trying to hard to be as loud as possible! 😂
What an incredible young man. Sharing tips like this out of the goodness of your heart is such a selfless and caring act of kindness. I only heard Tallah yesterday and I must say as an old 80's Thrasher pretty set in my ways, there's only 2 bands that have totally blown my mind in the past say 20 years and they are Jinjer and Tallah. Phenomenal album, keep up the great work and hopefully I'll catch you guys Down Under one day 🤘😁
I appreciate these type of videos. You've been a wonderful random recommendation hearing you sing the past few weeks. Much appreciation and hope for much success.
I have no hope of ever sounding aggressive with my vocals but even still, I watched this all the way through because I appreciate all the brutal honesty. Hungry Lights just got a new sub from this guy.
Wow that info and insight on engineered vocals vs raw vocals was really helpful, as well as the revelation on how you exaggerate your expressions for the performance but keep your voice in control.
just.. wow! This is the most useful video of the decade. Just by looking how passionate you sound it just gives me enough motivation to quit smoking. I know it's damaging my voice like hell and I've been struggling a lot to quit it. I think that's exactly what I need it. Thank you so much! For real!
5 min in and i LOVE that he showed everyone how a scream sounds with all the effects off-this demonstration is invaluable; this concept was probably the primary reason i saved my voice when i first starting doing harsh vox, as well. excellent work!
I just watched the Overconfidence music video for the first time and really expected this dude to be some angry douche, but he’s like the softest, sweetest dude in the world and I love it lmao. Tallah kicks ass
I really love this vid. Also, about that "Gollum scream" (which bands like The Berzerker do) you showed in the How to scream 4 years ago, that you said "I don't know what it is", it's not really supposed to sound like Gollum. The best way I can explain it is: You take the Lizard scream, and you take the Exhale High scream, mix them together and then you'll achieve the scream that these bands do, however, if you feel itchiness in your throat, you're doing it wrong and you're gonna mess up you're voice. This scream already sounds pretty cool by itself, but adding layers into it makes this scream sound, in my opinion, godlike. (I'm not a vocal coach or a profissional.)
Very informative. I’ve fried my voice from time to time over the years trying to match studio engineered vocals. Happy to see Tallah’s success as well. A friend of mine sent me a link to “We the Sad” recently. I love it. I recognized you right away in the music video from your 10 Ways to Scream I watched years ago.
Your video popped up in my recommended just at the right time, I am a vocalist and yesterday we were practicing and like as soon as I got home i noticed that after every practice i get a sore and strained throat. And after i just watched all this video You have no idea how much this has helped me understand how to practice and perform better. The best vocal channel by far, Thank You
This advice is seriously so good, man. I don't have nearly as much experience as you as a performer but you pretty much spoke to every little detail that I've been picking up on during my own journey (even small stuff like talking or singing the same note for an extended period of time is harder than a variation of notes). There's a reason why you almost never see Deryck from Sum 41 out in the public before a show but you'll see the other guys in the band. There's a reason why it was said that Wayne from Static-X would basically sleep most of the day and keep to himself, really just coming out at night to perform. Those are examples of guys trying to do what you're describing here.
Omg Justin you're the best. Needless to say I'm obsessed with tallah- you guys are so awesome. Make sure to tour Minnesota for me please :) xoxoxo love you Also if you could tour with spiritbox the world might crack in half by how heavy the concert would be
Not only you’re a stage animal, you’re also a very intelligent person and an extremely skilled professional. I really, really admire you.
BECAUSE YOU'RE yelling LIKE A FCKING HOWLER MOKEY
very intelligent lol :)
YO MY MAN SAID HE 30!!! I THOUGHT HE WAS 24-25
he still is to me
If you think about it he’s been doing this UA-cam thing for a decade now it makes sense he’s turning 30.
Same
Odd Ball He joined 2015 😅
Look at 40 year olds now, they look super young. People take care of themselves more than ever before, everybody looks younger than previous generations did.
This video shows how selfless Justin is.
A great vocalist looking out for people that want to become great vocalists.
Respect!
Competition? With JUSTIN?
lol jk
Seriously! Most people who do screamo tutorials on UA-cam leave out so much key information or they’ll just give you vague instructions, you would think it was rocket science. Now that I learned, I realized how easy it was to teach people how to do it.

The universe guided me to this video...
Comparing your vocal cords to guitar strings made my mind explode with oh shit
I'm a speech-language pathologist and I repeat these things all day. Thank you for sharing these informations, voice health is not known at all.
This reminds me, I met Spencer Charnas from Ice Nine recently. Very nice guy but I noticed he spoke to me in the most gentle voice ever. After watching this I think I know why 😅
Lucky
Love this vid, but watching you doing Reflaugh without the crazy emotinal performance behind it was SO fucking weird and somewhat unsettling
Glad i got to talk to you at the Agawam show without any loud music playing(:
I’m really glad he did the non operatic performance if reflaugh, I found very useful to know.
I just want to see the whole video lmao, apathetic Reflaugh cracked me up
I thought it was fucking hilarious😂 and really put into perspective that you don't need to overproject. Best instructive video I've ever seen and that part one one of my favorites!
This is why Justin is one of the best vocalists of all time. He is so underrated.
My face when Justin puts me in a Hungry Lights video 🥰🥺
Wonderful video, really valuable notions. YT needs more videos like that
Yo this is the first time I've seen your comment on others video
I was literally packing a bowl as he said stop smoking
echo that
I was rolling a joint, lmao oops
Uhhh...
i just smoked 🙃
Kris Stout don’t waste it, give it to me haha
When he went “ because you’re yelling like a fucking howler monkey” I died😂😂
So I discovered Tallah today. And I was like, wait, this lead singer looks like that guy who did that video on different styles of screaming. Bit of googling and here I am. Just wanted to say, awesome work guys, I hope you blow up. Figuratively.
I cannot unsee calm screaming Justin.
The image has been carved into my mind.
Same. It’s all I’m gonna think of every time I listen to Tallah 😭
Seeing Justin prevents my voice from being damaged
He's just that talented.
Justin is such an entertainer.. even when talking about such a serious matter, i broke out of laughter atleast thrice ..
Fucking. Finally.

yay you finally uploaded on this channel again!
Ikr
I’d love to get lessons from you, your dope! Will hit that up
Hey Mr.Wobbles, I’m a big fan!
Wait, you do screams? Do you have videos of you doing them, or are you just trying to learn them right now?
Time for the typical scream?
This is why Mike Patton is a phenomenon
holy shit dude just heard tallah
🔥

When I first started doing vocals it was nasally as hell so I’d distort my voice more until I coughed up blood all night. Now I take care of my voice
Good info from start to finish. If I ever go to one of your shows I'll probably just give you a nod.

Starting at 4:30, this is what everybody needs to hear definitely.
Hey the kind weird guy, whos pretty dang good at screaming is back.

Keep up the amazing work.

I don't even sing or perform but I just like watching this guy
Wow, not even half through and I’m already learning SO much, super informative
Like holy fuck this video is so eye-opening

It's truly amazing, keep making music Justin! It's honey for our ears, you're really really skilled, I hope you keep it up! Your fans support ya
Snapi tallah have so much potential I hope they will make more in the future
I've been yell screaming like oli and over proyecting fry screams and wasn't aware that this fucks up my voice till now. Thanks dude
Do not try and learn from Oliver sykes pre Post Human. He fucked up his voice MULTIPLE times because of his technique
Hell yeah, this is what I've been waiting for. I remember how I started with your first tutorial

Thank you!
In my last band the vocalist always did rehearsals without mic. And from drums I was hearing the lyrics haha
Here's to Tallah making more music!
im an ametuer singer with thyroid issues, ive been wanting to get into screaming for the longest time and ur channel is super helpful
Justin, as an old fan, I am so proud of how far you've come, and I hope you go as far as possible. You are extremely talented and skilled, and you deserve every bit of success you get. Godspeed man. Hope to see you on some sort of metal hall of fame or something. Metal is better with you around. Much love. Peace.
Happy and glad your mental health is up and shining. Keep it up, great stuff.
‘Don’t Compare Your Chapter 1 To Someone Else’s Chapter 20’
Phenomenal album, keep up the great work and hopefully I'll catch you guys Down Under one day 🤘😁
This is the best vocal advice ive ever heard
I appreciate these type of videos. You've been a wonderful random recommendation hearing you sing the past few weeks. Much appreciation and hope for much success.
I have no hope of ever sounding aggressive with my vocals but even still, I watched this all the way through because I appreciate all the brutal honesty. Hungry Lights just got a new sub from this guy.
I'm just starting out as a vocalist... Thank you!
Good luck!!! It’s a tough journey but definitely worth it once you notice improvements, do not give up!!
A good video, not only for people in bands, but even us metal heads who want to scream along with it.
This is probably one of the most useful vocal advice vids out there, its given me a new wave of encouragement to get back in my vocals
Worth the time to watch.
He teaches soooo natural, not mechanical or stuff. I will download this video and watch it everytime I do vocal exercises.
Oh shit now i need a Three Gods e Me album vocal video soooo bad 🥺🥺
Wow that info and insight on engineered vocals vs raw vocals was really helpful, as well as the revelation on how you exaggerate your expressions for the performance but keep your voice in control.
just.. wow! This is the most useful video of the decade. Just by looking how passionate you sound it just gives me enough motivation to quit smoking. I know it's damaging my voice like hell and I've been struggling a lot to quit it. I think that's exactly what I need it. Thank you so much! For real!
This was an awesome video and I love your honesty. Not a lot of performers are so willing to admit that how they perform on stage is mostly an act!
Even going to concerts and singing along, I've noticed I overdue it x]
Great video man, played with you guys at The Palladium in Worcester, was an absolute pleasure!
For years,
I would admit that you are my teacher.
With respect and thankful always.
Make sure to tour Minnesota for me please :) xoxoxo love you
Also if you could tour with spiritbox the world might crack in half by how heavy the concert would be
Thanks, dude. I'm tracking again today, and I always come back to this video
I love when you teach stuff, you're my favorite singer ever 4 real ❤️
You worth to create a channel to say how mutch confidence you bring me back as a beginning singer. Thanks a lot.
so glad you brought back placenta
Return of the king
bruh
can learn a fuck ton with your advice brother proud to call you a friend!
Thank you Justin, now I know how not to lose what I care the most in my body. Thank you
when he said 30% that really resonated. Been telling everyone to do this guess I'm doing okay. Lol
