- Will Ramos + The Charismatic Voice + Doctors & Cameras = EPIC RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES!
We brought Will Ramos out to Utah to find out physiologically what's happening in his larynx while he's making the deep gutterals, screamingly high goblins, tuvan throat singing and everything else in his repertoire.
Also, I did a course with Will Ramos and Chris Liepe where you can learn how to create harsh vocal sounds yourself! Check it here: www.mymusicalvoice.com/p/ulti...
Please Donate to the National Center for Voice and Speech (NCVS) to help fund projects like this one, and help disseminate the highest quality voice information to researchers and the public.

Thank you to Dr. Ingo Titze and Dr. Amanda Stark for all the support given to this project, and the continued support to analyze and study what we found.
Thank you to Will Ramos and Lorna Shore for donating Will's body to science.

I just listened to some of their stuff. Can't believe THAT's his real voice. I'm an old fart, so he sounds and looks like a kid to me. But I've been listening to extreme metal since the mid 90's. Pretty good stuff, makes me have hope for the new generations. By now extreme metal has developed very distinct vocal styles.

*will ramos running up to hug someone he's never met before and immediately complimenting their house*
One of the reasons I'm into metal is because metal heads are so lovely 😊
I've found that metalheads and really alt people in general are so sweet and open with people. I think it's because if the judgement and bullying Alt people get for looking different that they are extra nice to other people. Love being a part of this community:)
Pretty sure Elizabeth got an AirBNB for this episode with Will visiting, but you're right, he is quite humble and friendly nonetheless.

Scientists/Experts (prolly not into metal): AMAZING!!!
He's not doing anything that long time death, black, doom, or symphonic metal bands have already been doing. Heck the band is not doing anything new.
Blackend death metal had been around for ages. Winds of Plauge was doing what his band is doing. The list goes on.
A number of these bands are very overrated for not breaking new ground. Meanwhile bands Fleashgod, Dark Tranquility, Mors, etc get little credit for the paths they paved.

Im a neurologist. The vocal folds and surrounding tissues twisting like that is an awesome thing to see but I was thinking all the while.....what parts of his brain are activating all those tissues? He must have very specific neuronal circuits specializing in every nuance he is able to produce. Sadly, I dont think there is any way, with the technology available, to detect and study them. Its mind boggling.....literally. Nice video!!
I was just thinking about that! Normally you'd assume that the movement would NEED to be symmetrical since it's all innervated by the same couple of nerves. Are the recurrent laryngeal nerves even capable of doing this intentionally considering it's a branch of a cranial nerve?
What would be interesting(and this is coming from a non-medical background) is maybe placing leads all over the head(EEG if I remember correctly?) and see where there’s activity during harsh vocal activity.
It takes years of programming your CNS to go outside it’s normal bounds. It’s mostly mental imo.
Practice practice practice. Lol
It’s kinda like those who do finger tuting and move their individual fingers with precision. The unconscious reinforcement your body goes through to isolate the individual muscles is amazing. What is even more amazing when you think about it is how the muscles have to tighten into the right shape but will be loose enough to vibrate correctly to get those sounds. I would love to have seen how his voice was different that if Elizabeth had done some opera vocalizations. Very fascinating.

Considering this was around the time you were prego it would have been difficult to sing opera vocals normally but doing this at a time where both of you are peak health and vocals together would be epic.
I mean I'm not an opera fan at all personally, but the mechanical comparisons would be awesome to see because this is stuff dumbies like me will never see in our life without videos like this.
Genuinely one of the coolest experiments I’ve seen. So he just has an extraordinary amount of control over his voice. Plus Will just seems like a really cool dude overall, very nice guy.
Yo you here too
Good to see you here man
DUDE WHY AM I SEEING YOUR COMMENTS ON EVERY VIDEO I WATCH?!?!?!
@@randallradke1279 that's his thing, he goes around commening on videos
@@pavlemilatic3900 but like the videos I’m watching vary so much, I don’t get how we have the same taste
Will is literally a kid living his dream. Nicest most humblest guy ever.
I discovered these people separately over the years (Elizabeth, Will Ramos/Lorna Shore - and Nik down in the comments) and seeing the collaboration happen between some of the most unlikely of individuals - because of their respective fields being so far apart, is incredibly wonderful to see. The respect that a deathcore metallist and a highly technically trained opera singer has for one another here can teach us all something.
Thank you for your hard work, and thank you for this documentary.
So technically, TECHNICALLY.... Does this make Will the throat goat?
He's probably my favorite human in metal. Love how kind he is. Great video!
AYOOOO 😳😳😳
@@yugiohlegend I'm sorry!
"Throat goat" sounds like it should be a product that needs to be lubricated before use . . .

If I was on a date with a girl and someone referred to her as the “throat goat” and she was like “ohh just an old nickname teehee”
I’d tell her “pshh you obviously don’t know anything about Will Ramos”
As a med student studying orl/ent right in this moment and a metal fan, this video couldn't come in a better moment! I will try to casually shove the topic in my orl exam discussion
Awesome! Thank you. You have no idea how impactful this video will be for your class!

Such an Incredibly Fascinating look and dissection of an Unbelievably talented vocalist and his skill! And the dude seems like such a down to earth person to hang with!
I'm so happy to see that science proved that harsh vocals are a great skill, not just "stupid screaming in a microphone". It's a great day for metal and arts in general! (PS: can't wait for Elizabeth featuring on a Lorna Shore song!)
Exactly! You know it's something truly special when the people watching him and thinking, "how does he do that?" are some of the most brilliant vocal scientists out there.
This made me realize he's just frickin built different, literally.
He's really not, we all have this exact same structure in our throats. He just has hours and hours of practice.
@@exurosanctus Certainly, but there is a natural talent factor involved in it, for sure. Most of us can run, but no matter how hard we try, we are unlikely to win an Olympic gold medal ever. Although practice can help us improve and learn a lot of things, there are limitations to our abilities. That doesn't diminish the amount of work he's put into perfecting it in any way!
I feel like it's similar to how some people can roll their tongue or wiggle their ears etc.
I haven't looked down any other vocalists throats while they perform similar things, so it'd be super interesting to see if they all construct this asymmetrie or if they achieve the sounds with different manipulations.
Fascinating!
Its fascinating that he can do that - using your example: its almost like he is winning an olympic gold by doing a twisting motion of the parts producing the sound. 10 years ago there was not that much research done of metal singers available. This is amazing and it will probably change how we think about singing and vocal techniques.
Now lets hope someone makes a study or research with a lot more metal vocalists as participants or in that theme. They said Its not unusual, but do they all do/use that kind of twisting motion?
No he just practiced and experiments and dedicated himself to his passion. Anyone can do it if they wanted to enough
Just practice and u can do it
this series of videos you did with him has done more for my vocals in the last few hours than the last ten years of training and experience. this this the coolest thing. I dont know exactly when you started reviewing harsh vocals like this, but this series has been so cool. Thank you for doing this
This is actually so incredibly interesting stuff you just did!
I can't really put into words how much I appreciate what you guys did here, I love it
Amazing. The Doctor was moved emotionally by Will’s ability. There is probably massive research and studies that have been validated by just observing this guys vocal skills. Amazing not only for vocal science, but for metal music. Such a cool video.
Of course she was moved. Science is pretty vast already, and new discoveries tend to be tiny and incremental. Most PhDs will look at some tiny facet of something, dig just a tiny bit deeper into an already well-established theory of their respective fields. Do you have any idea how rare it is for a scientist to do something truly original, to lay groundwork on something that's literally never been done before?
The most amazing thing about this is not what it shows - it's how many questions it creates. Interesting, unanswered, and fundamentally *new* questions. When that old guy at the end of the video said it's gonna take them years to analyze the footage and model what's going on, he wasn't joking, nor exaggerating. It is literally going to take years. There are so many roads of inquiry opening up here, there will be genuine research based on this for a long fucking time. More than a few students will work in that lab and base their master's and doctoral theses on this. All because people on the internet, just for shits and giggles, pushed an opera singer to comment on increasingly extreme metal vocals.
We live in amazing times.
@@SpaceMarshalGyorni you could say the same about music. It's hard to do something new that actually sounds good!
Will has no skills
@@getshwiftygaming447 the guy that names himself after the most cringe, normie virgin show is here judging an actually talented person lol.
"Getschwifty" hahahaha. Get laid bro.
Need to say hes awesome, but holy cow do you know how hard it is to use an endoscope, let alone with that amount of movement in such a tight space, the doctor is also a legend!
Dr. Stark is ridiculously talented! Thank you for noticing this!!!
Seriously, I had to have an esophageal manometry and it is the worst test I ever had done
This was truly fascinating! Thanks to Will for being so willing to do this!
I find it hard to listen to gutteral metal music, but I was driven to near tears watching him perform these amazing vocalizations.
Same for me, I prefer it when songs are mostly cleans but this was so cool to see! And hearing him do those weird noises is pretty cool
Will is so humble he's literally like "idk I just do this but if y'all wanta study it that's cool"
And all the scientists are ASTONISHED
With Will's personality and his vocal abilities, he truly captures what it means to be a "charismatic voice" I've watched this twice now. This video is just too good! Amazing work guys!
Tom had the same vibe which is why it felt off with CJ and it felt so right with Will
his personality is pretty dope
she genuinely looks like pam from the office
This is amazing to watch. As someone who has had a tumour removed from my vocal chord and had a camera down multiple times I fully get what its like. I never used to be able to see the picture properly. At the time my specialist and speech therapist said they only knew of two people in the southern hemisphere who could talk at all after this surgery and treatment. I frequently had hordes of medical students come watch on camera as I got asked to talk and sing to see what was going on.
This was shot and edited perfectly. It was part vlog and part documentary and I loved every minute of it. When scientists get excited it's a big deal, and their reactions were incredible. Really special thanks to Elizabeth and Kirk for setting this up, and to Will for graciously accepting.
I kind of thought of it like the jersey shore from the take away interview cuts.
Seeing Will, numbed and probed, still just casually making those almost completely inhuman sounds, and Dr. Stark with a look of sheer awe at it.... couldn't have gone better. Any time you can mix this much geeking out from both sides of art and science, it's a good day for the world.
Dude, Will is like the friendliest guy ever, he just seems so fun to hang out with.
Edit: Just watched the whole way through, that was disgusting and I couldn't look away and I am absolutely gonna watch this at least four more times.
Easily this was one of the most interesting videos on the topic I have had the opportunity to experience. Thank you Will, Elizabeth and the research team in Utah!
Will has such incredible golden retreiver energy
I love how Will is exposing deathcore and death metal to a wider audience.
I love how seriously you take this, Elizabeth. A lot of classically trained musicians turn their noses up when they hear these kind of vocals, calling them noise and unable to appreciate the skill they require. I love that you are actually interested, intrigued, respectful, and able to recognize the talent and skill. Vocals don't have to be "pretty" to be meaningful and impactful. Making these "noises" requires skill and hard work. What I'm trying to say is that I'm touched by your genuine interest and respect for harsh vocals, to a point where you're willing to turn the world upside down to research and understand them. That's all. You're really great. The metal community respects you 💜
Couldn't express it any better.
Agreed 👍

She actually has evolved a lot over a little more than two years. In her earliest metal reactions she sort of did have that reaction. People commented on her videos explaining the practice and she did a little research into it. She realized that metal vocals use many of the same techniques as Tibetan throat singers and developed a healthy interest in how they are produced. I agree we have to respect her for being open minded enough to listen to what we were telling her though.
@@brianeleighton I've been watching her for a little over a year, I wasn't really there for the early days but I can definitely see her evolving. I do think that if she has enough curiosity and respect to go all out for an opportunity like this, she does, or has grown to, view harsh vocals and metal as a genre as a serious art form.
I'm not the biggest fan of their music, but I was blown away when I first heard them and his unearthly vocals. He's right up there with Devin Townsend imo
