Problems in the Circuit - I Made Some Big Mistakes

  • I made a few big mistakes flying the Cessna 172 into a small airfield. This is the first flight I took the family along for back in the summer of 2020, and my first land away with such a busy circuit. I made a couple of errors on this flight that taught me some important lessons - here's what happened and why I won't be repeating those mistakes.

      The ComBox usually has crew and pilot isolation switches. Like you I’d have been on crew isolation in the first five minutes. I’m amazed at people’s patience with their kids. Commendable, just not for me.

    I think you did really well, at the end of the day it’s not easy to see what’s behind you. The lack of communication from the helicopter caused the main issue here. Lots of distractions, fresh back in the plane and a busy uncontrolled circuit all that taken in to account you did well. Great video.

  • @lawboy777
    @lawboy777 3 роки тому +11

    So easy for the aeroplane to get ahead of you when you fixate. I think you did well. However, as a Q400 skipper, I winced when you rolled into nearly 45 degrees of bank at low altitude and your ASI dipped below 60kts. Glad things didn't progress any further. Great video to show how factors can quickly combine to really distract you from your game.

      Think u mean airspace. The airways are waaay above him typically around 10,000 ft MSL AND they are restricted to IFR flights ie Class A airspace. A Cessna 172 would huff and puff to get to that altitude.

A wise decision would be to divide tasks, one person focuses solely on flying then whoever is with you deals with the children. big bit of complacency with not checking the tech log but lessons like that only usually come after you've realised what can happen when you assume things without checking. I'm and aircraft maintenance engineer and you would be surprised how often aircraft go U/S, the best way is to treat every aircraft like youve never seen it before, even if you walk away from it for 10 minutes and come back, always do the initial checks like its your first day

    You could have made more radio calls on down wind, base and final. Just to get that roto craft some info. However the roto craft is negligent for not reporting more. And the other fixed wing climbing up your tail could have extended down wind. Truly everyone needed some lessons on that one. But in all everyone is safe. And good job not letting the kids distract you from your main job of flying and communicating with ATC. I'm working on my PPL in the States and have seen some crazy out in this region also. Cheers fellow aviator!

    I watched the full video twice and I believe you did exactly what you had to do. I don't see why you should have gone around. The plane behind you should adjust to you and not the other way around. So nice job. I guess the back up altimeter allowed you to continue the flight. Nice footage by the way. BTW on the kids, I have two and I take them flying quite often, they know that they should be quiet and if they are not, I just isolate myself until I am on the ground.

    Last time I had a kid in the back was around 40 years ago, a cadet in the back of a Chipmunk. The little sod had been drinking a well known brown fizzy drink and eating crisps and chocolate bars before the flight. About 10 minutes into the flight there was a big splash on the back of my head and stuff flying past my shoulders onto the instruments. The little S@#t had thrown up! I was thankful that I was wearing a "Bone Dome".

    It isn't just you Noel but a lot of kids just want their WiFi and games. Rach's comment was class. But I suppose if flying isn't for her it isn't for her. I'm sure she will change her mind when she gets older. I'm fascinated with looking out the window on planes, always was even back in the ATC as a kid. I could see your stress levels rising but I think you did a great job. We all make mistakes and that Helicopter should have announced his presence. Now, not having a PPL do Helicopter pilots see themselves as higher in a pecking order or were they just a bit unthinking? I know there are other people with PPL on here so interested to know if this is the case. Loved that you showed all the issues you had Noel. You could have easily edited it all out so appreciate it. Great vlog. Bet your nerves were frayed with the culmination of everything. 'Look out the bloody window' accompanied with eye roll. 🙄 Nice one Rach. 😂😂😂

    Possibly my least favorite part of private flying is rejoining busy circuit at AGCS airfield. My attitude is to trust no one. It happened numerous times to climb back overhead after hearing a downwind call without visual contact. Sometimes it's a helicopter or a microlight (they use 700ft AGL circuit at our airfield), so may be out of sight, or under me at times. Until I see and hear everyone, I assume nothing.

      I once was on a trip to EBSP, from EHHV and I was #2 in the flight. I joined downwind as prescribed, and 5 secs in, I see #4 of the flight taking the downwind, but 180° different! We were closing fast and before I could react, his copilot got him out of the circuit by a climbing left turn, only to arrive last of the seven aircraft…

    Call sign left base runway xx making right turn to join final behind the helicopter
    Only difference that I have noticed from what you do to what other pilots do where I live is say which number you are when there is more than one aircraft in the circuit. So you would be saying number one on downwind or final and the aircraft behind you would be saying number two.
    If there was no number three aircraft number two could have done a full circle to the right of the downwind leg of the circuit to use up time behind you rather than a go around or extended their downwind until you were established on final.
