Thanks for posting this.....my missus taped Coronation Street over my copy in 1993 and I never forgave her. Waited forever for the promised road test of the Pantera 200 but it never happened.....:(
The original Pantera engine was a 351 Cleveland with a 4 barrel carb made in the USA and H model engine were factory rated around 330 HP but that number was far underrated actual HP was above 400 HP in stock configuration. 1974 was the last year for production of the 351C engine in the USA after that all 351C was then made until 1985 by Ford of Australia. I once owned a 1971 351 CJ Mustang and that car\engine was a beast I was sorry I ever sold that car but family first as they say.
"The recession they say is officially over." When this was broadcasted, I was just only 5 and I remember Top gear as far back as 1990. 22 years of watchign Top Gear.
Well its much cheaper than a Ferarri and Lamborghini but i dont care about that because its a very raw car, it looks awsome and sounds awsome. And the 1994 version looks like it is made in the mid 80s wich is very good because i love old cars. I would say that the Pantera belongs to my list of favorite cars. I love cars such as Delorean, 288GTO, Audi Quattro, F40, Manta 400, Delta s4, 037, Stingray etc.
my dad almost bought a GT5 in the early 80s!!! but he bought a charger instead - no regrets though, both are great cars! i'd love to have a pantera!!! what a beast! :-)
I love the last generation of the Pantera best. It's too bad they went bankrupt and got bought out by the company that also bought Gumpert (now called Apolo). Unfortunately we never got to watch any Top Gear here in the US, so this is my first time seeing this episode. Thanks.
@Henzzman A friend of mine has his own Pantera, though his came with blown engine, and so he swapped it for a ground shaking 7.5L 460cu. in. Ford v8 he pulled out of an old lincoln. I rode in it once, and I almost had a heart attack.
@FANADICALCOWHEAD Yeah i have seen swaps for other ford big blocks also,i think one even had an 8,9 liter or something ford big block,havent seen any of them with a blower though,though it would be very cool putting one on,imagine that sticking over the roof of the car.
@DeanoTheLegend87 yes it is...in a much later episode Clarkson drives it after the rebuild, and comments that Quentin's crash cost 50k to fix! They did a beautiful job of fixing it though.
No one seems to really know how many cars were produced it seems, everything from Top Gear to Motor Trend to the President of the International Pantera Club give widely different numbers, I have heard from 4000 to 7500 were produced with Ford 71-74 and everywhere from 6500 to 10,000 were produced overall from 71-92
351 4 bbl Cleveland w canted valves,semihemi,intakes at 2.19 inches,HUGE intake ports 4 fingers high from 6 foot man made for the high banks of NASCAR and ABOVR6000 rpm!!
Phantom096 it is not a ford pantera!? not! becase it carry a ford v8 engine means it a ford,it is a italian made car with a ford engine.just like lotus borrow the engine from toyota, don't mean it's a toyota.so stop calling it a ford
conrad testamark Relax!! No need to be a prick about it. Powered by Ford Pantera!! There! Is that better. Don't forget car enthusiast that what makes this car special is the stone age Ford engine it has. If the man that had the idea is from Argentina does that mean the car is Argentinian and not Italian??
Phantom096 To the fella that walked into one of Ford's Lincoln-Mercury dealerships and bought his one marketed by Ford and sold with a Ford warranty, he thought he was buying some thing exotic, by Ford. Little did he know, he wasn't
+Phantom096 engine is not stoneage at all.it is nascar based,semi hemi canted valve,2.19 inches intake,intake ports fit 4 fingers high from 6 foot man.works best at 5,000 to 8,000 rpm.
Does anyone know which season/series and episode of Top Gear this is? I understand it's from the original show, which ran from 1977-2001. If it's really from 1992, it could be any of 23 episodes according to the Wikipedia "List of Top Gear (original format) episodes".
the background music should be from alice cooper or something,as after all the body may only be italian design,but the heart beats of pure cleveland muscle.
They didn't show Quentin stuffing the Pantera! The car was featured in a later episode after extensive repairs costing 50k...so much for cheap supercars eh.
"4,000 cars."?? There were over 5,000 Panteras imported into the U.S. by Ford alone and De Tomaso continued to build about 2,000 more after Ford stopped importing them.
The 1992 Pantera Si (here in this video named as Pantera 200) has never had a twin-turbo aspirated engine with 550 HP. That's bullshit nonsense. In fact the standard Pantera Si shows 250 (DIN) PS - because of the catalytic converters - or with the ordered upgrade from the factory then 300 to 320 (DIN) PS.
Okay Gilbert440.. First of all, the V8 referenced is a 'big' V8, as there are many smaller V8's. No one said anything about a big block. Now who is stupid?
im a massive ferrari guy.... i mean a massive ferrari guy. Im also italian and i have a very deep passion for cars specifically italian cars and I have to say i would buy this car. If i had all the money in the world it would probably be my top five but before i bought another car from another nation it would be a car like the de tomaso or the iso grifo
Ok i like power and i respect those with it how ever it is they make it! BUT WHAT IS IT ABOUT STUPID PEOPLE WHO REFER TO A SMALL BLOCK V8 AS A BIG V8? Ok a 5.6 liter is larger than a 4.0 liter engine but they are still consider small block V8"s! Larger V8 engines or "Big Blocks" start around 6.0 liters! And they can go all the way past 8.0 liters. So lets not sound stupid!
It's because it's Europe, where anything bigger than 3.0L is considered a big engine, and sure it's called a "small block," but a small block is still a big engine.
OhHeyThereGuy Sorry OhHeyThereGuy This is not SStarbucks where small and tall are the same! I don't care where anyone is from, he could have said "small block V8" What do I call my 7.2's, 7.5, and 8.0 liter V8s, Gigantic? Small block big block, this guy was just either to lazy or to stupid to use simple logic. Its no excuse and its that simple. His statement implies "its as big as it gets" because whats after big logically?
Ben Tate Ben Tate, thank you are right, stupid people can't see beyond there own environment Thats why that guy got mix up with small blocks and big blocks. Even more ridiculous to the British guy, the British car manufacture Jensen Motors used BIG BLOCK 7.2 liter V8s, so yup some people are just stupid!
Gilbert440 They're not taking it from a context of American V8 designations. They're talking about it in respect to all the types of engines you can have in a car, and particularly cars in Europe, where such an engine does come off as being rather large, as stated before. Do remember that there were eurocars available during this time with V8s as small as 2.0L in displacement. During the time period that the Pantera came out, it was probably one of the largest engines you could get in a car that was considered European. Also, big block and small block designation has to do with block size, not displacement. Take a look at GM's 7.0L LS7 and also its LS2, LS3, ZZ383, etc. They're all small blocks despite having "big block displacement." If you really wanna get nitpicky, the originator of the small/big block terminology was GM for designating their big and small V8 engine castings. Ford never did this. Ford's "big blocks" had designations like FE, FT, MEL, etc. while their "small blocks" had designations like Cleveland, Windsor, etc. though the Cleveland was dimensionally pretty big for a "small block," and their 351 Modified was even bigger. Concluding, if you're going to be a pedant about it, you should make sure you're right first.
I'm happy a Brit is speaking highly of the Pantera.
Thanks for posting this.....my missus taped Coronation Street over my copy in 1993 and I never forgave her. Waited forever for the promised road test of the Pantera 200 but it never happened.....:(

the engine in these are Australian built Ford 351
The 1970s was lovely looking, the '94 version? Holy shit, what a tribute to finesse and beauty.
"The recession they say is officially over." When this was broadcasted, I was just only 5 and I remember Top gear as far back as 1990. 22 years of watchign Top Gear.

i'd love to have a pantera!!! what a beast! :-)
Now that looks like an 80's supercar and a SUPERcar :p
That Pantera is badass!
I love the last generation of the Pantera best. It's too bad they went bankrupt and got bought out by the company that also bought Gumpert (now called Apolo). Unfortunately we never got to watch any Top Gear here in the US, so this is my first time seeing this episode. Thanks.
I love how Renault classified a mirror-adjust lever an optional extra!
I'm male... But I want a Twingo! I would just laugh every time I got in it :D
Hell yeah,finally a hot supercar with a grunt,unlike ferraris that just scream like piss.This one has the mighty grunt of a 5,7L Ford V8.
@Henzzman
A friend of mine has his own Pantera, though his came with blown engine, and so he swapped it for a ground shaking 7.5L 460cu. in. Ford v8 he pulled out of an old lincoln. I rode in it once, and I almost had a heart attack.

In the 60`s most British sportscars like TVR, Lister, Lotus, Sunbeam, AC, MG a.s.o. ran US made V8 enegines, some still do..
@DeanoTheLegend87 yes it is...in a much later episode Clarkson drives it after the rebuild, and comments that Quentin's crash cost 50k to fix! They did a beautiful job of fixing it though.
THE AUDIO!!!!!!!! IT BURNS!!!!!!!!!!
Here we can see that safety wasnt a great issue in that era. Kkkk
If she thought the Twigo was odd what would she make of the Vel Satis or the Avantime?
top gear should do a new episode on the de tomaso pantera, especially since a new one is coming out after 30 years.

Clevelands are concidered as smallblocks
Yeah the Ford Pantera De Tomaso. Good luck trying to find one that cheap now!!
Phantom096 it is not a ford pantera!? not! becase it carry a ford v8 engine means it a ford,it is a italian made car with a ford engine.just like lotus borrow the engine from toyota, don't mean it's a toyota.so stop calling it a ford

i like BB's dino's and Maser;s and older lambo's but the Pantera is sooo much simpler to deal with and good looking at the same time.
Even at £50,000 it is still a well priced car comparably in todays car market
Does anyone know which season/series and episode of Top Gear this is? I understand it's from the original show, which ran from 1977-2001. If it's really from 1992, it could be any of 23 episodes according to the Wikipedia "List of Top Gear (original format) episodes".
The pantera was so pretty, however i found those in Dubai just sitting there rusted and decaying.
It's always awkward to see these with the steering wheel on the wrong side of the car.
Well UK and some other Asian countries like Malaysia and Singapore do drive on the left, hence the RHD steering.
why has this one got tones more views than part 2 ????
That Renault made me feel ill
the background music should be from alice cooper or something,as after all the body may only be italian design,but the heart beats of pure cleveland muscle.
If I hadn't been 12, maybe I could have afforded it then lol
£8-15,000, i just had a look and they are over £100,000 now
Count Quentula smashed the hell out of that maroon pantera requiring a 50grand rebuild - the only car he has ever crashed according to him
yes it's true, and it cost 50 grand to repair
@damieg82 Indeed, but it is a Renault, what can u expect...
They didn't show Quentin stuffing the Pantera! The car was featured in a later episode after extensive repairs costing 50k...so much for cheap supercars eh.
why wouldnt they play pantera instead of opera music?
the de tomaso looks like a countach
@kernals12 Now yes...
Elvis owned a '71 Pantera. One day it would start, so he shot it ... lol.
Thank God for Jeremy Clarkson.
Wow, the body kits got more and more ridiculous over the years! The '94 model looks like a 10 year old drew it.
We got be squared didn't we? Was there a followed up? Or did it fail?
@WiseGuy02 I know:)
Brand spanking new Audi 80 B4 @11:04
that pantera looks very much like a countach or is that me !!!
Daring styling ? Good grief, doesn't anyone remember the Renault/AMC debacle
known as Le Car ??
@CountStoczkowski I don't think the reason is because the host is still on, I think people like to see the new one more than the old ones....
Is that burgandy Pantera the same one Quentin wilson Crashed?
does anyone know the opera song??
how come it's hard to find the first season of top gear? it's not even available on dvd. is it because of the old host being on it?
I don't get it, if this programme was broadcast in 1992 how come they are premiering the 1994 model at 6:30?
LT engine 6 speed ..... damn to fast.
You know Quentin crashed that one on the video shortly after it was filmed?? :P
looks like a lotus esprit
Quentin Willson crashed a De Tomaso Pantera. He's followed by Michele Newman, who had a very sexy voice, but went on to crash .... a milk float!
No, he quit a while back. I think he's retired now.
9:29 anybody else notice that there are no footwells?
5.8 liters... :/
full service for 200 pounds, how much today I wonder?
Recorded under water :P
Renault Twingo ... so sad, LOL.
The pantera is so expensive now :-(
"it'll cost between 8 and 15,000 pounds."
Well, mate. Maybe in 1992.. these days, you'd be lucky to get change out of £50,000.
These days you'd be lucky to get change from 150k
"be there or be square " now where is the 200 on yt?
351 Cleveland Nascar designed heads canted valve 2.19 inch intake..is not primitive
powered by an Australian supplied 35i c.i. "Cleveland" V8
"4,000 cars."?? There were over 5,000 Panteras imported into the U.S. by Ford alone and De Tomaso continued to build about 2,000 more after Ford stopped importing them.
There were 7260 produced.
@AlfaAston123 Probably on vacation:P
5.0 V8 twin turbo only 550 bhp , that guy talking must be out of his mind
Isn't he on Fifth Gear now?
Yeah....
Quinton Wilson crashed a DeTomaso Pantera & the BBC had to write a 50 grand cheque
Ouch, that must hurt!
i bet a 460 would fit just right in that pantera ?
+fang check Why would you want an inferior engine? THe Cleveland V8 was Ford's performance engine of the time.
@eldumbo13 I like Quentin.
@AlfaAston123 27 October 1988
The British think a 351 is big.lol Of course,their aircraft carrier is powered by 2 Chevy 6.5 Duramax's,so,I'm just sayin'...lmfao
The 1992 Pantera Si (here in this video named as Pantera 200) has never had a twin-turbo aspirated engine with 550 HP. That's bullshit nonsense. Always loved that car. 350 hp hehe...back then of course that was awesome...now not so much.
Good to know that even in the 70’s, they ran shitty music over car videos
they crashed that de-tomaso
1:45
Alejandro De Tomaso 🔵⚪️🔵 🔵⚪️🔵 🔵⚪️🔵
Okay Gilbert440.. First of all, the V8 referenced is a 'big' V8, as there are many smaller V8's. No one said anything about a big block. Now who is stupid?
why does everyone sound so posh
Lol Foster's.
its a 5.8L not a 5.7
@RM851995 :))
im a massive ferrari guy.... i mean a massive ferrari guy. Im also italian and i have a very deep passion for cars specifically italian cars and I have to say i would buy this car. If i had all the money in the world it would probably be my top five but before i bought another car from another nation it would be a car like the de tomaso or the iso grifo
I'm with you there buddy. I would give my right arm to have a go in a pantera especially the newer one Quentin crashed
the fit at 9:12 is atrocious!!
Drop a ford Coyote engine in it,,,, Ferrari would shit themselves.
i would twingo her
Christ, the Twingo looks so outdated. At that rate, it makes 80s cars look timeless.
i heard that Quentin has crashed the GTS, is it true?
@markssite :))) because the opera is more suited than Pantera....
The background music is annoying.

NO WAY could that pile of poo reach 200 mph. Not even if you dropped it from a great height. ROFL. That car never went faster than 185, max.
