Old Top Gear 1991 - Jeremy Clarkson looks at some older Lamborghini's and takes a look at the new 20th Anniversary Countach. Taken from season 14, episode 12.
As you go further back into the Top Gear archives, Jeremy's hair just gets bigger and bigger. I can only imagine that, as a child, he was a hedge that made noise.
+salveMonesvol you're so right about that. Typical humans. I remember almost every car review loving the lambo but complaining about the drive. Now it can be driven and they're complaining yet again. AMAZING
Back then we expected cars to be better than the previous car. Now we expect certain cars to remind us about the previous era and or be fun to drive. Chasing speed and numbers is no longer the aim of most enthusiasts. The bugatti veyron is a perfect example of something fast yet boring.
@ab c Paddington Bear was actually created by a BBC Cameraman called Michael Bond. Clarkson’s mum managed to get the license to produce the soft toy version. The little bear sold in the millions which must have made Mrs C a pretty wealthy lady!
The difference between the. Lamborghini and the ferrari is the literal personality. Ferrari cars are Full of passion yes but at the end of the day you know its a car.... The point of a lamborghini is the fact that it isnt easy to drive. Its meant to be feisty, its meant to feel like youre a bull fighter and the car is the bull.... You have to grab it by the horns and show it whos boss... You have to fight with it. Going fast in a lamborghini should be literally a fight for your life in a feisty italian bull. And when you walk away from it you damn well know that its a living entity and not just a car
***** its easy sure but its not accurate, reports suggest that its still more blunt than a ferrari. but a lambo is really all about the engine and then the style.
I remember when this was transmitted. He also wrote a page in a Car rag and talked about the TV spot you just watched... It took a load of takes to get the Lambo to leave the golf off the line... The golf is easy to drive and launch off the line. The Lambo you have to get the revs right and feed the clutch right or it either bogs down or just spins its tyres.
I could swear magazine writers complained about the early Diablo, because it had the same heavy clutch and steering as the Countach. It was a big deal when Lamborghini changed that, with the upgrade to the Diablo VT.
I've driven every car here, from the Miura, LM002 to the Diablo. Though I am 189 cm I still love the Countach best. I knew of the heavy clutch, but I was surprised that the gas pedal also was monstrously heavy.
Man I love that Diablo. Especially before they put a spoiler on it - with the wheels that this one had. It looked so unlike most cars with the driver stuck right to the front of the car and like 2/3 of the car being engine and rear wheels. I had a poster of it on my wall when I was a kid along with a Countach and a Porsche 959. I don't mean to say the Diablo's my dream car, but something about the way it looks still does it for me even so long after it's been out.
Anthony Mancini i wasn't even alive in the days of the countach but its my favourite car... lamborghinis' especially older ones are just the business when it comes to cars
But the countach just neeeds the big wing that does nothing but look badass. A friend of mine has both the countach and the diablo, well his dad does anyway, and the countach just kind of does it so much more for me. If you sit inside you really can see the italian saying "ah, that's good enough leather right there". You can hear the fuel valves opening somwhere behind you if you press the pedal when the engine is not running, the big spoiler is glued together from two big parts and there is a big hump right in the middle where they didn't care to get rid of extra glue before they painted it, it's hilarious, if you bought a car today, even some dacia, that wouldn't happen :D The Diablo is miles better quality wise, it was one of the lasts models from 2001 when audi had taken over before. But it isn't even half as loud, although being so much faster
Hell, any Joe Shmoe with a bit of extra cash, some talent, a garage and the ability to order parts from Jegs or Summit racing can build a car faster than that. Hell, go to any podunk countryside village in any country and you won't have to search for long until you come across a random tuner who tuned his 1980s Golf GTi to 2000 hp using spit, duct tape and spare change.
Not all about speed young fellah! Its about desirabilty, pedigree, Rarity and sheer want factor. Its not all about speed and tuning. These are handcrafted exotics.
'in 71 everyone was driving around in mk2 cortinas - the countach was as bigger leap forward as the harrier jump jet was from the horse.' LOL classic clarkson...
I saw an interview with the three presenters of the current Top Gear, where Jeremy described himself as a teenager, saying he looked like a "drainpipe that's swallowed a spacehopper", or something alogn those lines :P
Why is this vid recommended now? My high school teacher owned one back then and I accidentally ran into him in it at a local car meet, btw. It's a dope ride.
1966 The Muira and it was the first mid engined road car!!! And yes it looks way better than the Countach... its timeless. The Cuntach is a dated wedge.
6:16 But in 1994-2004 the McLaren F1 was the fastest car in the world (befote the bugatti veyron was made, which is the production car to hit 400 km/h)
"The difference between a fast car and a Lamborghini" Damn Also man when he says "every 19 yo male with a moustache that looks like an earwig" Like holy shit dude Jeremy Clarkson mentioned me 9 years before I was born
Not a huge coincidence considering the popularity and relative “performance” of the gti at the time, but still interesting comparison considering this review predated the vw acquisition of lambo
I'd almost forgotten what a total pillock Clarkson is. I don't know about the anniversary Countach, but the QV that preceded it had a decent-sized boot, albeit cowering beneath the enormous wang. It was bigger than the luggage space of any modern city car. He also failed to mention that the LP400 that was in the start of this clip was from 1974, not 1971. It took them an extra three years to get from the concept to an actual production car. It was during this time that the Countach grew those ears, as they discovered that having the radiators lying down meant that they couldn't keep the engine cool. Setting the radiators upright forced them to add the extra cowling, or have the radiators sticking up above the bodywork.
Is this a first take or something? Cos there's another video of him doing this exact same review with the same script and shots (mostly), but his voice is much more like later clarkson
Leave it to the woman at the end to ride the clutch for a couple hundred meters and put the equivelant of about 4,000km on it as she took off. I can smell that burnt-almonds-broiling scent from here.
they skipped the LP400s that's the one just after the yellow one they showed, which is an LP400 the LP400s has the wheel arches, but no finny lines in the air intakes, like this anniversary
Jeremy did the same race with the golf gti after about 10 years when he did a race between the Lamborghini murcielago and the golf gti the same race and he say the same word. This is how much new top gear copy the old top gear.
As you go further back into the Top Gear archives, Jeremy's hair just gets bigger and bigger. I can only imagine that, as a child, he was a hedge that made noise.
Hahaha. I misread this at first as, 'he was a hedge that had a nose' hahaha
In the old days they complained that they could not be driven, now they complain that the aventador CAN be driven. Damn it, decide!
+SalveMonesvol SHUTYOURMOUTH
Eric Smith Right
+salveMonesvol you're so right about that. Typical humans. I remember almost every car review loving the lambo but complaining about the drive. Now it can be driven and they're complaining yet again. AMAZING
wow. amazing comment. true true.
Back then we expected cars to be better than the previous car. Now we expect certain cars to remind us about the previous era and or be fun to drive. Chasing speed and numbers is no longer the aim of most enthusiasts. The bugatti veyron is a perfect example of something fast yet boring.
Diablo is a real beauty, but still the Countach is a choldhood dream.
The Diablo looks like a drug dealers car.
Exactly
James may had the same desire for the countach
ua-cam.com/video/CQndMc4_RQU/v-deo.html
Love the Countach. The Diablo was the first of Chrysler messing about with the designs.
Countach was also a drug dealers car
was Clarkson ever young?
He came out of the vagina at 40 years old.
It's struggle for a while....
he must have been soo annoying a as child! All those witty smirk remarks!
No, but he was always an insufferable moron.
@@PurityVendetta hey he's our *insufferable* moron
I love how when Jeremy tested the Murcielago he payed homage to his test of the Diablo.
Why does Clarkson sound so posh back then lol?
Different times, different BBC requirements.
@ab c Paddington Bear was actually created by a BBC Cameraman called Michael Bond. Clarkson’s mum managed to get the license to produce the soft toy version.
The little bear sold in the millions which must have made Mrs C a pretty wealthy lady!
You had to speak like that if you wanted to work for the bbc
These are the Clarkson reviews that made me love cars.
He had the emergency brake on at 2:26 when he took off lol. Gotta love Jeremy!
When I saw it I thought I wasn’t the only one ..

+Mr. 0 Only if you leave the ESP and TCs on. Turn it off and the Acentador is Biabloe reincarnate...
It's a driver's car vs a posh football's toy.
I remember when this was transmitted.
He also wrote a page in a Car rag and talked about the TV spot you just watched...

Yeah if you aren't accustomed to supercars or a race trained driver, good luck not doing 360s.
I could swear magazine writers complained about the early Diablo, because it had the same heavy clutch and steering as the Countach. It was a big deal when Lamborghini changed that, with the upgrade to the Diablo VT.
What is that GORGEOUS jazz piece that is played throughout this video?!!!!!
keep these old top gears coming in mate. thanks for the uploads.
Lamborghini was always my favorite and always will be
Im sure ive heard the same soundtrack in some vintage porn movie..
Now you know who the one asking "What's the name of the song?" was
Jeremy looks good with An Afro
That Miura is goosebump-inducingly gorgeous.
man i always loved the lines of the countach. Such aa beautiful design
Lmao! The second Clarkson popped his head out that window, and I saw that hair, I died!😂
When i was a kid, the Countach just stunned me, the design is so radical and out of this world. THAT is what makes it special.
I've driven every car here, from the Miura, LM002 to the Diablo. Though I am 189 cm I still love the Countach best. I knew of the heavy clutch, but I was surprised that the gas pedal also was monstrously heavy.
Diablo and Countach look amazing.

Get one there cheap dude
But the countach just neeeds the big wing that does nothing but look badass.
A friend of mine has both the countach and the diablo, well his dad does anyway, and the countach just kind of does it so much more for me. If you sit inside you really can see the italian saying "ah, that's good enough leather right there".

But it isn't even half as loud, although being so much faster
112 hp was a fast car? wow times have changed a lot
Also the Diablo was the fastest car at the moment, nowadays you may have 20 or 30 cars faster than it (or even more)
Hell, any Joe Shmoe with a bit of extra cash, some talent, a garage and the ability to order parts from Jegs or Summit racing can build a car faster than that. Hell, go to any podunk countryside village in any country and you won't have to search for long until you come across a random tuner who tuned his 1980s Golf GTi to 2000 hp using spit, duct tape and spare change.
Means fuck all. The Aventador is Lambos newest car and not too many beat that.
Not all about speed young fellah! Its about desirabilty, pedigree, Rarity and sheer want factor. Its not all about speed and tuning. These are handcrafted exotics.
Tommy Orr Jr then I'd say that the Noble m600 beats the Aventador
Lol, love how he eventually re-used that rear visibility joke on a newer Top Gear episode many year laters.
'in 71 everyone was driving around in mk2 cortinas - the countach was as bigger leap forward as the harrier jump jet was from the horse.' LOL classic clarkson...

That Miura is a beautiful car.
Epic hair from Jeremy lol
Did the Mura look as good in 1991 as the Countach looks today?
corvusala Till this day, Miura is the most beautiful car in the world if you focus on details (wing spae, bull horn doors, sideskirts ...)
1966 The Muira and it was the first mid engined road car!!! And yes it looks way better than the Countach... its timeless. The Cuntach is a dated wedge.
“It’s called the Diablo, and it’s the fastest car in the world”
Oh how times have changed👌🏼
My sister and her husband used to own a Diablo, hell of a car that was!
6 ft 5 in man struggling to push the clutch pedal. What a car.
The Miura is one of the top 5 sexiest autos of all time.
Today the price tag gives you an idea what the collectors feel about the car
this song came on the radio today :D
1987 Countach 5000 QV is a beast
For anyone wondering, the current fastest production car (I believe) is the Hennessey Venom GT at 270mph (limited by track length).
Is that in stock form?
artistwithouttalent Yes.
But then we have the issue of being a "production car," and God knows what the Chiron will do to upset the balance.
Production car? OK right. Remind me please, how is it registered? Lotus is it? hahahahaaa
Psychopathis What?
6:16 But in 1994-2004 the McLaren F1 was the fastest car in the world (befote the bugatti veyron was made, which is the production car to hit 400 km/h)
Lamborghini and Bad Company, what a combonation.
Horacio Pagani did a good job with that 25th anniversary Countach. Looks more refined that the Quattrovalvole. :)
"The difference between a fast car and a Lamborghini" Damn
Also man when he says "every 19 yo male with a moustache that looks like an earwig" Like holy shit dude Jeremy Clarkson mentioned me 9 years before I was born
Thanks!
wow nice gti
I love that Rock'n'roll music!
I love old top gear, all about the CARS
what's the song at 5:30?
he did the same race when he tested the murcielago lp640-4
Not a huge coincidence considering the popularity and relative “performance” of the gti at the time, but still interesting comparison considering this review predated the vw acquisition of lambo
That was the theme tune from BBC Grandstand... not Top Gear.
music is priceless
the biggest difference in cars, though, is the fact that they all have to have tv screens connecting you to facebook now.
These old clips all have a slight underlying sound like they're being recorded through a fan, especially when the songs come on
RIP David Bowie tho
I'd almost forgotten what a total pillock Clarkson is.
I don't know about the anniversary Countach, but the QV that preceded it had a decent-sized boot, albeit cowering beneath the enormous wang. It was bigger than the luggage space of any modern city car.

so this is where the golf GTi reference as a fast car started huh
The Miura in this video is the Lamborghini Miura P400SV.
idk but this just makes me laugh and jeremy's hair oh god...
Nice tie! Jezza...
It is the same music. It's sung by Matt Monro. Just one point : in TJB the Muira doesn't fare too well
That would make them 46 years old now,, wow
Or the Jarama, or the Urracco? What about the 350GT? Those cars are now forgotten, sadly.
5:13 - Bad Company! By Bad Company! From the album Bad Company!
At first due to the old Grandstand thme I was expectingthe Excellent David Vine or Good John Inverdale to appear.
Possibly one of the best comments ever posted on UA-cam!
Funny, he uses the same line at 6:40 in the new Top Gear when comparing a dif/ supercar to a GTI.
That LM-002 looks so evil you'd be excused for thinking that it was fueled by a custom blend of nails and human infants! O_0
Lamborghini was so far ahead of his time
What's the song when he's driving the 20th Anniversary Countach? When he steps on the gas and it scares him.
Merci from french 🇨🇵
Miura is the Legend
🇮🇹
Sant'Agata Bolognese's pride
Dang, Clarkson has been at this for a WHILE.
Tuba? That's a guitar in David Bowie's Space Oddity.
Is this a first take or something? Cos there's another video of him doing this exact same review with the same script and shots (mostly), but his voice is much more like later clarkson
Saw that Diablo at the secc car show in Glasgow in the early 90s
I think the music flies under the radar of copyright due to it being mutated by wow and flutter
my dream car!
Bad Company by Bad Company from the album Bad Company. Hope this helps
something else came out in 91' besides need for speed and the great diablo, the perfect NSX
LM002 is pimpin.
Leave it to the woman at the end to ride the clutch for a couple hundred meters and put the equivelant of about 4,000km on it as she took off. I can smell that burnt-almonds-broiling scent from here.
@TheBBoyJmE, their tractors are more collectible than the LM002s.
they skipped the LP400s
that's the one just after the yellow one they showed, which is an LP400
the LP400s has the wheel arches, but no finny lines in the air intakes, like this anniversary
Miura is so beautiful
Did they fix the insane steering problems?
LOL! It looks like Jeremy comes out from the '80s!
dat LM002 is so Beautiful, i want one armored
The genesis of Alan Partridge
Jeremy did the same race with the golf gti after about 10 years when he did a race between the Lamborghini murcielago and the golf gti the same race and he say the same word. This is how much new top gear copy the old top gear.
It is between the axles - mid-engined
Diablo makes my knees weak
The 90's ?..
I remember the 70's very well.....
music at the start? what is it.
Oh this sound jumps, vhs times
I can turn and shift and hit the clutch at the same time as well.
What's the song in the very beginning?
0:26 Was that an Arcade?
Holy cow! Nice 'fro Clarkson!
Miura wasn't the first midengined Road car.. that was the Porsche 904
no its the 20th countach came out 1971 this was 1991 which is 20 years :p
