I didn't even realize until somebody pointed it out but the snake in Shang Tsungs second fatality is actually your opponents spinal cord. He transmutes it into a living snake, that makes it 100x cooler.
I thought since the blood was bubbling that it was just a chemical reaction,very cool!

This actually got me thinking about how much this Shang Tsung was designed around making the opponent hurt themselves in deceptively subtle ways. For his 1st fatality, he makes them injest a concoction that kills them from the inside if it gets to the heart. I imagine the reason why they try to tear their own throats out during it is to make sure that it doesn't? IDK, I'm not a psychologist. His 2nd fatal has him turn the opponent’s spine into a snake that eats their face whole, quite literally turning their body against them.
This gives me HUGE Terumi vibes and makes me think about how much better Shang would be ingame if he had the ability to temporarily let himself build meter as fast as Terumi does, only instead of energy attacks, the meter gain would likely come from his claws or fireballs in this specific state.

Gera reaching slightly into the future to rip his opponents head off and handing it to him is the most creative fatality to date 11/10.

The fact that in Liu Kangs second fatality the opponent can't scream because he's in space is a very nice touch

@@identifiedasquimponly issue is the eyeballs wouldn't still be there.....they would have collapsed backwards and fall out since there is no socket or come out with the skull. Maybe that would have been too traumatizing....

He was raised by General Shao. That explains everything.
Meh. Mileena had a more brutal one when she bites through your skull and eats your brain, because you would still be alive for a good amount of time after that. With Reiko, you would die pretty much instantly at the very first part of each fatality.
He saw his W/L ratio in Story mode.

What i love about Rain's first fatality shown (and makes it a 10/10 to me) is the fact on most characters the water will turn red, making Rain in fact just like Moise splitting the red sea in half, only in this case the red is literal

25:30 The traditionally absurd number of rib cages, thigh bones, and the like is what sold this one for me. They knew exactly what they were going for and delivered.

Geras time travel fatality is the most amazing by far it was genuinely creative.
It reminds me of The Flash's ultimate attack from Injustice 2. Very cool

I like how Ed Boon said that the fatales had to go through some check marks that wasn’t too gruesome and the devs ended up laughing at most of them. And there there’s Reiko….

@jamieeddolls5605 Diminishing returns. Just because a kill is gorier doesn't make it better, these aren't "how much can we get away with without an AO rating" like in X and 11.

Taking both fatalities into consideration, Reiko is top 5 at worst.
The halberd one is Jade's MK11 fatality, but actually REALLY good.
The thing that gets me about the second one is the body at the end. Reptile looks like he's just chilling...and the face sagging is terrific detail
They’re more Roman than anything. As Reiko pretty much reminds me of a Roman Soldier in this game.

I like how they made Reptile have one of the more expressive faces for fatalities cause they knew people would use him for his green blood on youtube. He really looks like a nice guy that doesn't deserve it.

The fact they went as far as to add a stupid amount of femurs and ribcages in kameo scorpions fatality made me laugh, that was a clever nod

I like these fatalities. I like that they seem to be dialing back and going for simplicity and creativity rather than just trying to push the gore level to extremes because the latter has limits and diminishing return. These all genuinely give me early mortal combat vibes with how short and sweet they are, but better because they are more creative overall.
My issue with them is a lot of them don’t seem to connect part one to two like there’s no point in doing the first part of the fatal because the second part has nothing to do with it
I just wish they did the slow freeze when the fatal ends like in Mk11
Reiko's fatalities might be the most brutal in the entire franchise - I've never *yelped* at how painful they looked until his 2nd one.
Also how in the 2nd one at the end reptiles face "drops" or "falls in"....its really f-ed up but also super cool :D

I agree. Sheeva's Spinal tap fatality in MK11 is the only one in the series that grosses me out as much because of the sounds and the look on the person's face. Kabal's Hooked is also high on the list.
I feel like that’s the most realistic one, so we call all imagine what it would feel like. All the other ones are so obvious to which they would have already been dead after the first shot

Shujinko's Kameo fatality is honestly the best one imo. He straight up used the five point heart explosion technique from Kill Bill, you can tell Ed Boon's a true man of culture

When I first saw the fatality, I instantly focused on the face when the skull got removed and it did not disappoint with the detail.

- Reiko's brutal execution
- Liu Kang's black hole
Gotta give props to Reptile’s voice actor, he sounded like he was in absolute agony.
Personally prefer Rain’s in terms of screams of agony, but yeah Reptile is good too.

These fatalities feel a lot more "stylish and fun" rather than the 11's "gross out and disturbing" fatals, and I actually love it more for that. You can definitely tell this came about because of devs suffering from PTSD using real gore references in the last game. Props to NRS solving the issue without sacrificing style

Geras has some of the coolest cinematic moves in this game, they got real creative with him.
Darrius 100% should've gotten his "rearrange the opponent" fatality instead. Missed a golden opportunity.

I really like how the opponent stays alive till the very end for the great majority of those fatalities. Feels more like you're "fishing then" instead of "playing with their corpses"

22:55 my favorite part of this fatality is that you can barely hear reptile scream "no!" as the bombs explode.
Although I like to imagine it's Liu Kang screaming since he now has to make another timeline.
I realized scorpions 2nd fatality also throws references to every weapon he used in past games. mk9 was the swords/katana mk4/DA/Arm. He used axes.
It's also a reference to his clone fatality in UMK3/MKT, it had a black screen back then but now we know what really happens.
Reiko's second fatality is something only classic Shao Khan would pull off...It's straight up terrifying and utterly savage.
Definitely my favorite next to Lui kang and Geras fatality.
Remember that, in the OG timeline, Shao chose Reiko as his general because of how ruthless and sadistic he was. So, if Shao thinks you're the most ruthless, then you really must be a bad mofo.
Plus it's a nod at how in the past Reiko was pretty much a stand in for Shao Kahn to the point people thought he was supposed to be a past version of Shao.

21:05 the slamming head one I personally like alot, cuz it utilizes like, when you lick a pole during winter and your tongue sticks, but it involves the entire face, which "I Think" is the first time we've seen subzero do something like that with his ice. Its been either stabbing them on icebeds, ripping the spine out, or just straight up freezing and shattering like glass.
Very happy with Baraka's treament in this game, incredible character to play as.

Geras’ Time Loop fatality is probably my favorite in the game. One of the best fatalities of all time imo. Love that creativity.
I think Mk1’s fatalities are generally a little bit toned down from mk11’s on purpose. Since it’s a reboot, they can keep the fans happy by having them still be very brutal, but not to the point where people who don’t know Mk think of it like its SAW.

God I just noticed that Reptile's face started drooping on Reiko's second fatality, since his skull is elsewhere... that's MONSTROUS

2nd sub-zero fatality isn't just him smashing that guy's face into the wall of ice. You see the wall of ice is SO COLD that it's holding onto tissue (like when you lick a frozen pole) and he's forcibly pulling back leaving more and more sections of the head frozen to the wall with every hit.
Makes it a little cooler.
I honestly think it's one of the best Sub-Zero fatalities we've had in a while but that's just my opinion

I love there are some fatalities that revel in showing the guts coming out and then there are some that just have the skeleton pop out with no organs in sight 😂
Honestly the weirdest thing about the fatalities themselves is that half of the characters feel out of place doing fatalities at all.

That's just honestly a problem Mortal Kombat has had for a long time.
Since day one that has been a problem.
When the games first came out, Liu Kang didn’t have a fatality because they thought it went against his character. Now his non-lethal finisher tops worst fatality lists. So now all the chars have out of character fatalities lest they wished to be dunked on by fans
@@hankfortwelKind of explains why one of his fatalities in MK 2 is turning into a dragon. Felt like overcompensating for the fact people mocked Liu Kang's "fatality" in MK 1, so they tried way too hard to make one of his fatalities in MK 2 as cool as possible.
Havik's 2nd one is easily my favorite. Literally breaking his own limbs and using the compound fractures as shivs, absolutely fucking metal.

I actually like how simple and basic most of these are. I like that they're more tongue in cheek and kinda fun because it felt like mkx and mk11 were going a little too far in terms of the extreme violence. It seems like they really went back to basics and more classic in terms of like what they did in mk9 and I really like that.
Then they decided to go balls with Reiko.

The Liu fatality is a great idea but for me, the Geras and Baraka ones “hit” better. Super creative.

Geras 2nd fatality is my all time fav. It's creative, it mocks the other player, it's well executed. Perfect.
I think adding some dialogue to fatalities would be great, specially when there is a known rivalry between characters, like having some finishing words to them

He remembers that he was Khan in two timelines, and gets faster the madder he gets
to the credit of the second subzero fatality, i think a really cool aspect is the "dont lick the street pole in the winter". The first slam creates a bunch of moisture on the ice, then the second pull makes his face stick more to the wall. underrated!
crazy how reikos are perfect basically. he has the two best ones. Excited to see homelander and hopefully onniman doing the deathbattle one
Liu Kang's second fatality is 100% 10/10 material. Teleporting into space and then creating a black hole with a snap of his fingers really sells his power level as God of his reality.
I will say, I think they rely a little too much on fast flaying fatalities. (Storm?)'s whirlpool fatality should have twisted his body horribly until he looked like a twizzler instead, as an example.

Personally my favorites are Liu Kang's second fatality, Baraka's second fatality, Shang Tsung's first fatality, and Reiko's first fatality. Also, I'm really shocked by just how great Reiko's fatalities are; for how little this guy does in the story, it's cool to see he got such brutal fatalities.
Reiko's feel like they're to make up for the dumb fatalities he had in Mortal Kombat 4.
Each game since x has had a general theme in its fatalities. X had a lot of intestines and brains and 11 had a lot of faces being torn apart (especially flying eyeballs) and people being peeled in two like a banana.

I love that Scorpion’s Kameo fatality references the older games by giving his opponent way too many fucking bones. Neat callback to how ridiculous the bone explosions were.

This. I really like this homage for many many many freaking bones in all MK game, it's just nice touch for fatality. And Scorp fatal was so much better than Sub in this one, strange. But.. Ed Boon favorite character still.. no so strange if you think about this.

I appreciate that for the classic Scorpion one they added a bunch of extra bones for the character to explode into. I wish there were more flying ribcages though.
It would have been a 10/10 if Scorpion was hit by one of the 5 ribcages that fly out.

[EDIT] I also just realized that if Rain does his Fatality on anyone but Reptile, he'd basically be parting the Red Sea.
[EDIT 2] If you look closely during Reiko's 2nd Fatality, you can see Reptile's face deflate from the lack of bones to keep it in place. Damn good attention to detail.
Fun fact: Rain's first fatality is literally called "The Red Sea"

I feel like the mantra of "go back to basics" defines MK1 in a good way and the fatals also follow that. They are more like classic fatalities but updated. More straight forward and not taking things too serious. I love it.

I kinda like that a lot of the fatalities are more goofy and funny than full on gross out. Nitara just kicking the skeleton out of you is so god damn funny to me, they feel more like the old school fatalities

They are shorter, goofier, and less exaggerated (in the sense that characters don't keep going with it after the opponent is already dead)
I personally like having dark, gorey ones, closer to MKX. There's some really cool ones in here! Geras, Baraka, Nitara and others have some really brutal ones. Actually there's a lot. I love the sick fatalities the most🤣

Geras' fatality was great. I also think Li Mei's first one was a 10, though you rated it 8. It was creative and fun instead of slicing up the enemy type of straightforward fatalities.
16:00 the camera work is phenomal, not a lot of cuts, the panning is so engaging and the focus changing from Reptile to the Reptile at the end.
It's directed like a monster movie attack, 10/10.

What I’m noticing with these fatals is they sometimes have kinda cool setups and actions, but then at the end, the body just sort of plops and falls apart randomly on the floor. They should have it where the body parts fall apart in a cool manner, like land on top of each other or form a pattern. Thatd add some finesse to the end

Rather, they like the creativity that goes into them. Especially with this being the 12th game, you'd think they'd run out of ideas by now

It seems like the fatalities in MK games often have a subtheme. For instance, a lot of fatalities in MK11 involve "peeling" characters. So far, it looks like MK1s subtheme is the victim screaming far longer than feasibly possible.

The fatals in MK1 have the downside of having some amazing ones in MK11 to follow up on. That said, many of them this game are really good. Baraka, Geras, Reptile, Liu Kang, Shang Tsung,Johnny Cage & Rain for example having some real bangers and standouts that are creative & impressive.
The bar was set very high from the last game, and most of the fatalities here meet the bar in my opinion. I do hope that the fatals continue to get creative & hit that right sweet spot of awesome & utilizing the characters kit in the finishers with some sprinkles of dark humor (depending on the character)

Li mei genuinely has my new all time favorite fatality. The flow from one move to another and incorporating her moves and powers. Not too disgusting but just brutal enough. Perfect fireworks
