Here are some great exercises that you can do to improve you Dressage riding. It is so important to exercise and have control of your body so that when you ride, you can focus on your horse. Activating and strengthening the correct muscles before riding can be very helpful for when you get on your horse!

The important second part to all strengthening is stretching. I fell on my butt on concrete stairs 30 years ago and have had nerve issues in my lower back ever since. After several trips to the physiotherapist I have my regimen of strengthening and stretching, (and my Schleese saddle, which is truly a godsend for me) and that keeps me going. I supplement with a small had held massager from Amazon that helps break up the potential knots that still want to form from time to time. Posture is also important and I find reinforcing it in everyday situations (e.g., at work) has benefits for my riding as well.

This_esme_ Fan Thanks for the thought. 😊 I am puttering along fine. I have discovered UA-cam is a gold mine of physiotherapist's offering exercises to try, which since I am going no where in these days of social distancing, gives me something to do.

I can really recommend working on your internal and external hip rotation. It has helped me a lot in a short amount of time doing stretches and exercises to gain more rotation and activation in the muscles in my hips and the deep muscles in the thighs. Been struggling for a while with not being able to keep the horse straight when riding in the arena, but only on the left. The horse just falls inwards, to the center of the arena and the more I've tried stop that from happening the worse it become. Never had that issue in the opposite direction. Every horse I rode did this, so the problem was clearly somewhere with me. Took me a couple of months to figure out it was my hips/pelvis. I can rotate externally really well in my left hip joint but the internal rotation is weak, I hade the opposite going on in my right hip joint.
I also got issues with a tilted pelvis which means I go hollow back really easily and that leads to an incorrect support of my spine, the core doesn't activate properly when you are hollow backed. Which results in an easily tired lower back and a feeling of being disjointed where the pelvis and spine connects - in the waist area. Doing these internal and external hip rotation exercises has helped me more easily find a better tilt on my pelvis, so it has been an positive influence not only for my hip rotation but also with correcting my pelvis tilt.
In the beginning I was only able to keep a correct pelvis tilt for short amounts of time when standing before getting tired, then when walking, but now I can do it when riding as well. I can't manage keeping a correct tilt all the time however! I lack the muscles for it, but it is slowly getting better.

This is so incredibly helpful and such awesome timing! I have been asking the question all week of which shoulder muscle will help me keep my elbows in place, I kept thinking I needed stronger pecs but now I can really feel which muscle I need to strengthen, Thank you again!!

Hi! Enjoyed these exercise tips as I do them myself and have seen the benefits! Several people have asked and I'm asking as well - what is the name of the saddle/balance board you demonstrated on? Thanks!

great! but I only see four exercises? 1.IT stretch 2. rubber band stretch for shoulders 3 glute stretch turning foot out and move backwards 4. sit on rotating chair and move pelvis without using hands. 5. =

We do a similar exercise on a Fitball. Sit on the ball and lift your legs off the ground, attach the reins to a fixed point in front of you and balance without holding onto the reins.

Where or who is your go-to source of information for "rider fitness"? I've tried to improve my riding through physical fitness because I have limited time in the saddle and I work on things that make sense to me but a professional source would be so much better.

I'm at the first lessons and it's hard for me to get on the horse by myself (don't laugh at me lol)
In the last year I lost 50 kg and now I got into horse riding and riding a horse I'm using muscles and the strength in my legs that I did not have when I was obese so it's difficult now for me to get on the horse by myself
    What can I do? Squats?

I have trouble getting on by myself sometimes too. Every day is always different. I attribute it to aging, but keep pushing for your goals. We will get there.

You can probably use a bigger pilates ball. Have the reins attached to something and try to lift your legs up and balance like you would in a saddle without using your hands as balance.
