    I think the other reason they cut the scene is because the dialogue so heavily predicts a LOT of what later gets revealed about the Riddler: that this is a personal vendetta dating back to childhood, that he's a fan of Batman (not a hater), and even that there's a ton of overlap between the Riddler and Batman's mindsets. By including this scene in the actual movie, all of those plot points would feel less impactful, making the final act much weaker as a result.

      @@firstlast9846 It does technically count as foreshadowing, but it kind of gets heavy handed especially towards the end of the scene when Joker goes into how Batman and Riddler are morally aligned and Batman subconsciously justifying and understanding how he thinks

      When the scene shifts from what Batman suspects what Riddler actually knows and wants, I think it's less impactful if we go in even considering he's a Bat fan and a streamer. "We almost got him" worked because I think suspect it was going to be a thing.

    Loved the fact that Joker stole the paperclip off the folder without drawing attention to it.

      It’s so cool seeing a version of the Batman that’s genuinely unnerved by being around Joker, instead of just acting stoic all the time. You can see it actually having an effect on him. Inversely, I like that Joker is one of the only characters who isn’t creeped out by Batman. Just shows how demented his perception is.

The reveal that the riddler thought he was working with Batman the whole time was such a surprising subversion and completely blind sided me. In the age of Apocalypse comic, i think it was the one about Cable, theres a line stolen Terminator. In another X-men comic he steals a scene from Manhunter. Loeb's tropes are so annoying to me. The screentests for the film had one with both of the Joker scenes on and another without the scenes and they ultimately decided for the version where they kept the second scene and removed this one which I think is the right call. This scene happens early on in the film after the second victim and not only does he pretty much predict the whole thing and actually succeed in profiling Riddler but it also takes away from the second scene later on where he would have been revealed. It also kind of diminishes the shock Batman feels (and what we, the audience, would feel) when he realizes Riddler's motivations since the Joker pretty much already told him. This was a fantastic scene but removing it was the right call and I'm kind of hoping it's not canon. The film didn't need it and nothing in the final cut felt like a piece was missing anyway.

Secondly, diminishing Bruce somewhat (he makes a few mistakes, but him missing Joker's mental tricks would be too many in the same film). Lastly, spelling out everything might diminish the impact later on. It's still a cool scene though, and I'm glad they are making it available to fans. It's a cool scene to watch now and wouldn't mind it included back in the movie for an extended cut, but I just finished watching it a few minutes ago and I feel it was a good call to cut the scene for two reasons. First, it's unnerving as hell and having the joker appear as a Hannibal Lector type villain in the first film of the series would immediately steal all the attention away from The Riddler, who should remain the focus as the films main threat. The Joker is too popular that no matter what he inevitably going to be the thing people will focus on. The second reason I think it was a good reason to cut it is he's giving away The Riddler's motives and immediately ends the mystery of the movie. It's not even vague hints that become clear on a rewatch, he's saying exactly what The Riddler's motives are. So watching this clip after seeing the film is amazing but good call to remove it.

      Fully agree. My thoughts exactly. In a vacuum it's an excellent scene but had it been in the movie it would have have diminished the effect of the ending and also steered attention away from the Riddler which wouldn't have been good. Despite what Jeremy and some others have said, I actually like the small cameo the Joker has in the actual movie. It hints at a larger world without taking the attention away from the main plot. Could this longer scene have been a post credit scene? Like as a flashback? Possibly.

    I also think that this scene definitely would've made that I Am Vengeance line at the end of the movie more hard hitting. We get to see Batman's closest nemesis point out how he's no different than most of the people he beats, and the idea that the Batman feels guilty because he's responsible for burning the joker, that's freaking dope. His greatest villain being a constant reminder of the day he went too far.

I think it’s about time we see how the interact in the prime of their careers. While I’m glad they released this scene I’m also glad they took it out because it would’ve taken away from the prime conflict of the movie and everybody’s attention would’ve gone to this one scene it would’ve ruined the rest of the movie. I can’t wait to see them deliver on more interactions later but I also don’t want him to be the next main villain, Joker shouldn’t always be the main antagonist, sometimes he works just fine as just another foil

That would be the most intense scene in any Batman movie!

    I actually quite like the idea of using Joker as a sort of Hannibal Lecter figure in this new Batman story. It would mean we would still get Joker, but in a different sort of way and not as much. We've gotten so much Joker over the years that another one fighting Batman face-to-face would be white noise, but having him in this position could sort of give new life to the character.

  • @nickthompson2023
    @nickthompson2023 2 роки тому +7

    Here’s my take:
    They should have left the scene in. Where the scene would’ve fallen chronologically in the movie’s timeline would’ve setup the eventual revelation Bruce had that he should abandon the vengeance motif for why Batman exists and change fully to being a symbol of hope. As the movie laid out Bruce’s character arc, he kept making these mistakes, which was phenomenal, but at the end, when he stops Seline from killing her pops, it was like he suddenly made the realization of his own corruption of the populace without any foundation of why he started feeling this way. And I can’t shake the feeling of it coming across that he changed “for love.”
    This scene plants the seed early on that Bruce, at this point in the movie, isn’t as fully committed to vengeance as he was at first. Joker taunting him by pointing out that Bruce does feel like some of the corrupt people deserved their fate begins Bruce thinking that maybe he’s going about this the wrong way. It sets the stage for him preventing Seline from going down the same path of her father, and it further drives home the “hope” ideology when he demasks the Riddler clone at the end and hears his moniker to his own horror. I think this scene would’ve more fully fleshed out Bruce’s character arc, and definitely would’ve added to the story.
    Plus, it’s the fucking Joker.

    Probably two reasons for this scene getting pulled.
    1. Batman clearly doesn't know the answers and needs Joker to explain it all to him. This takes away from him feeling like 'world's greatest detective' angle they were focusing on so much in the movie.
    2. Joker explains all the twists about Riddler's identity and motives. This takes away from the later reveals about Riddler.
    Would have been poor execution to just have another character explain this all to Batman. You don't want to downplay both the skills of your protagonist and the reveals of your antagonist. Would have been like Killer Croc just explaining the Joker's backstory, wouldn't be satisfactory to find out about it that way.

    I think they didn’t want to overwhelm the audience and themselves , bringing in a new joker after so many , is always tough . considering the Jared Leto flop , I really think this scene was meant to be released later on to allow people the time they need to adjust to the new cinematic approach and to capture their reactions, after they have been teased in the movie. Smart approach. Because if they had included it and people didn’t like the scene the whole focus of the audience will shift towards the joker because he will steal the movie if we like him and it will ruin the movie if we don’t.

I loved it but I feel like this was going to be a divisive decision down to the wire. Remember the heaps of bad press and reactions on social media Leto's Joker got when his design was released. This is a lot more visceral, that last shot with the mouth (genius btw) might have represented to big of a creative risk.

  • @danigikas
    @danigikas 2 роки тому +35

    Although that scene admittedly sent a chills on my back and I think it was great as a stand alone scene, I think it was a good decision from Reeves to cut it from the movie.
    The only reason for that being is that since it would probably be early on in the movie, (when Batman still tries to connects all the pieces as to why the Riddler did what he did) it would have undermined the self-revelation that Batman reaches at the end of the movie that perhaps being “Vengeance” isn’t too far from being a villain and what people need for Gotham to stop being at a never ending cycle of violence is Hope.
    So, if that Joker scene was included, Batman would have had already a hint from his discussion with the Joker that perhaps his motives are not too different from the Riddler.
    This would have definitely underpowered the dynamic of the movie’s conclusion in my opinion…

    However given it hints at Bruce's brutal vengeance complex and his villains being "inspired" by him which is addressed in the finale, I think this scene might be able to work much earlier on in the movie. It'd predict Riddler's backstory yes but so much happens before the third act that I think it wouldn't deflate Riddler's origin reveal, most would forget what Joker even said, and it'd also enhance Bruce's realization that he can't be the brutal vigilante anymore and needs to inspire the citizens of Gotham rather than the criminals.

    There are two specific reasons why the deleted Joker scene could not have made the final cut. The first is that this version of Batman was intended to be more closer to the World's Greatest Detective than any previous portrayal and in this scene he is effectively given the answers to the Riddler's identity rather than working it out for himself. The second is the inclusion of this scene would have also stolen the limelight from Paul Dano's Riddler.
    I do agree that the scene that was in the movie where the Joker "befriends" the Riddler in Arkham State Prison looked like it was tacked on to foreshadow the direction of the next film.
    That scene plus the deleted one have led to a lot of criticism from people about them "playing it safe" by revealing the Joker and/or not giving other villains in the Batman Universe a chance. The thing is that the Joker is Batman's archenemy and you can't have multiple movies in a particular universe without his presence.
    Barry Keoghan's take on the character in just this one deleted scene was fantastic. His portrayal seems to be equally psychotic and intelligent instantly making his Joker a fascinating character. There is enough there in just that one scene to show the fans that they can offer a different take on a character that has appeared four times in feature films since 1989 with four completely different interpretations of him.

    I also thought the scene with the joker at the end of the movie was extremely week. And I like that they cut that scene as well. It would’ve taken everything away from the riddler. Plus when show him so soon. What made Chris Nolan’s set up for joker so good was that we didn’t see him in the first one, we just get a mention that there’s a new guy leaving calling cards at his crimes, then we see the jokers card. Imagine if we saw Heath ledgers joker in a security camera at the end of Batman begins. It would’ve taken away from his character immensely.

      Yea but where there is Batman, there has to be Joker somewhere down the line. Just hope Matt reeves can get the chance to do more films than a trilogy, then they could introduce anyone like Clock King, Scarecrow, Killer Croc ( unless he is trying to stay realistic, Hopefully not), Firefly, Ivy, Clayface, Zassz( I know im spelling it wrong), Two face , and etc.
      Mr. Freeze might be the next one for all we know, and we might even see multiple villains in that one.

    I'm honestly glad it was cut. Like he said the riddler feels like the first big threat he's faced but then to not only say that batman's already fought the joker but to also relegate him to a 5 minute scene just doesn't feel right to me. I'm really hoping that idea stays scrapped and the final scene of the movie is him before he really becomes the joker.

    • @mistermastermind528
      @mistermastermind528 2 роки тому

      Now that I think of it, I also have a problem with the idea that there's some history (backstory) in the universe of that film that we never got to see. Maybe I'm just a bit traditional about it but I do like the idea that within the 2 years of being Batman, The Riddler would be the biggest threat yet. We just assumed that everyone he fought before the events of the movie were goons and small time criminals who were working for the mob...well, the movie did kind of implied that.
      Also, it feels like this scene would've made Bats a little bit more dependent on the Joker's thoughts in figuring things out. He shouldn't, he's supposed to be smart. On top of that, we are treated with a chemistry that we're not really established with. The only reason why it works for us is because we know the history (comic) between these 2 characters.
      So yeah, despite the scene being good, I'm glad they cut it and as for the little cameo in the final cut, that deserved to be cut also. We never really needed a Joker tease for this one. Felt like they were retreading the tease in Batman Begins.
