@@ohata0 Sakura Slash goes from meeeeh to really good in Rampages, yes. You said that with Sakura Slash you don't have anything to spend Spirit Gauge on, but you can spend it on Serene Pose, which does I believe +300% extra damage at red compared to uncharged (from what I remember). It's only a single powerful hit, so still not as good as Helmbreaker, but at the highest level it's essentiall a free hit that about the same damage as a full spirit combo. I think this option is for new players who are still learning how to time the other, more difficult counters. It's also useful against a new monster where you don't know the moveset well enough yet to pull off the other counters. You also made this vid a year ago, so it could be that this changed since then. Thanks for the vid.
After the helmbreaker you can surprise surprise special sheath. If you happen to miss your ISS and not get hit you can sorta kinda cancel the end lag by 1. Rolling or 2. Rurikhan: I HATE LONGSWORD. Also Rurikhan : Making a comprehensive guide on how to use longsword. I'm really thank you for doing this because I'm learning how to play longsword.
I'm a new-ish longsword main (started playing it in Rise because of how satisfying it feels to use), and as far as guides go, this isn't too bad. You covered most important things, but didn't mention some aspects. Most important thing you missed is that you need some gauge to be able to use Foresight Slash - without it, you don't get the counter an s. Also some intersting things: - You can cancel the second half of Foresight slash with either Soaring Kick or special sheath. This could be used for some of the attacks like for example double tail slap of Nargacuga. Some people flex on Bazarios triple fire burst by using something like Serene Pose -> Foresight -> Special Sheath -> Iai Spirit Slash. (that's too bigbrain for me, I don't do that) - You can also special sheathe after successful Iai Spirit Slash (cannot do so if you missed the counter window) or after Helmbreaker. - You can also follow successful Iai Spirit Slash with steps 3 and 4 of the Spirit Combo, which allows to get the gauge faster. In fact common opening on some monsters is to poke -> Special Sheath -> Iai Spirit Slash countering the roar -> Dividing Slash (or Spirit Blade III) -> Spirit Reckoning (or Spirit Roundslash). - Drawn Double Slash it actually has some hyper armor, but it's really small window, and isn't too practical, but it's there nonetheless. - Sakura Slash is also kinda good for Rampages from what I heard (I don't like Rampages much, so I barely done them), so can keep that in mind I suppose. - If you use Spirit Reckoning combo, the Diving Slash (the move that comes before the finisher) can be used stationary, like you've shown in the video, or can act as a gap closer if you input the direction. I might have forgotten some things myself, but yea. Overall this isn't a bad guide, good job.
Part of me was hoping the guide would have a section focused on finding and staggering your team. "how to prevent people from placing turrets in a rampage."
When I saw this I thought I had gone into a coma and woke up on April 1st. Edit: As a mediocre LS main, I think it was a good guide! The only thing I would say is that if you try to foresight slash with 0 spirit meter, you don't get the guard point. It uses all of your current meter for the guard point backstep, then fills your meter completely if you connect with the slash at the end.
For sake of LS Spirit it is similar to previous titles but changed a bit in Rise being 1.05/1.1/1.2x Base Raw Multiplier 1.05/1.1/1.2x Base Element Multiplier White/Yellow/Red In World and I believe all previous iterations it only affected your Raw attack and was Total Raw, by being Base now it does NOT affect any bonus attack you have (Peak Performance, Charm/Talon/Petalace etc), for sake of things like Attack boost that also have Base Raw multipliers those things will multiply together For sake of Spirit Helmbreaker and Serene pose their damage uses a base value with the raw portion multiplied by 2/3/5 and Element portion multiplied by 1/1.1/1.3x (for the element this is in addition to the element multiplier the attack itself has), and for sake of the above multipliers per spirit tier to your stats (the 1.05/1.1/1.2) Spirit Helmbreaker will always use the set from after the spirit drop associated with the attack, and Serene Pose uses the Raw multiplier after the spirit drop (except for extreme inconsistent exceptions) and Element Multiplier from before the drop
First of all, thanks Rurikan for taking the guide seriously. I know how much that probably hurt you. Your dedication to making MH continue yo ne a warm and welcoming community is appreciated though. I promise to only trip you twice if I'm running LS during a hunt with you. Secondly, just a little bit of added information on Sakura Slash vs. Spirit Helmbreaker for people that haven't done a lot of work on LS (and even some that have, but make assumptions about DPS based on a certain speedrunning team's videos). It's NOT QUITE as simple as "easy mode special" vs. "harder special". Sakura slash is the easier special to hit, but there are certain cases where you may want to switch over to it. The Sakura slash (from what I hear, I haven't gotten to test this specific bit) does a few more hits than Helmbreaker. This means that, if you're running an elemental sword for a specific monster weakness, Sakura slash will make up its damage deficiency fairly easily (between the extra elemental damage and the extra time on red bar vs. yellow bar). If you're not running max end drugs and pills and seeds at all time, the effect should actually favor Sakura Slash here since elemental damage is flat. This also means that before endgame, your Sakura might actually do more damage. Sakura also has a longer charge up, but on monsters that have LONG periods between decent punishment windows, this won't be as notcieable. If, on average, your team is taking 30-45 seconds between stuns and trips, you won't notice this as much. Technically, Sakura can land while a monster is moving fairly easily, but if you're playing fairly conservatively with a monster and waiting for moments when you can hit a weakpoint easily with a special, you won't notice as much. This all is important for one VERY big reason... A certain endgame Thunder Serpent has a massive dragon weakness AND long windows between her stun windows that let you hit a VERY obvious weakspot. This combined with how hard it is to land foresight slashes and ISS counters on a flying monster means that a dragon sword with elemental boost and crit with Sakura Slash should, for 95% of the playerbase, outdamage spirit helmbreaker. If you decided you hate rampages and want to farm dragons for talisman mats, this should be very important information to you. Even if you moved onto something like Chameleos, Cham's heavy fire weakness should be very handy here. ...but yeah. If you're not a master LS user that's not dropping full red spirit helmbreakers every 25 seconds, you'd be surprised how close the damage is between Sakura and Helm. There's no shame in using Sakura if you're running an elemental set, running online random groups and can't easily guess monster aggro, or if you just need more time to learn a monster before you can find a good window to hit an actual weakspot with Helmbreaker instead of the monster's wings. Even outside those situations, what's optimum is going to rely HEAVILY on your item loadout, your build, and the specific hunt. So, contrary to what a lot of people will tell you, you are not REQUIRED to run Helmbreaker.
Rurikhan your gonna scream at the screen for this comment but i have found during my playtime in rise i have been tripped more by wyverns fire than LS. 🤣 Great video as always
Worth noting Helmbreaker and Serene Pose do vastly decreased damage outside of Red Spirit Gauge. It’s much more than just the Red Spirit bonus, so don’t perform these attacks with yellow or white gauges. It’s not worth the animations. Sakura Slash does not have this same fall off, it does more damage at Red Spirit Gauge but not to such an extreme degree. Sakura Slash + Spirit Round Slash also works nicely with Double Drawn slash as each are routes into a regular sheath which get you the double drawn for some sweet spirit gauge. This lets you focus on Serene Poses instead of Helmbreakers, it’s an interesting play style. Fade Slash goes directly into Spirit Combo 2, allowing you to land a full spirit combo without needing the juice for Spirit 1. Overhead into fade slash into spirit 2, 3, and 4 Foresight Slash must both absorb an attack, and land the attack that follows the movement in order to fill your gauge to full and allow for an instant Round Slash. If you miss that attack, even if you absorb a hit and hear the sound cue, you get no gauge and cannot follow it up. Spirit Roundslash is easier to land after counter attacks as well, you can sometimes catch a monster that charges past you. It also brings you to a normal sheath which lets you loop back to the Double Drawn Slash which fills most of your spirit gauge if you land both strikes.
Still the best monster hunter guides in my opinion. Got rise for a second time on steam since I played 140 hours on switch. Decided I’ll play game as long sword to keep things fresh. Yah I’m terrible at counters so it’s not going well. Just gonna keep watching over and over haha. I hope you come back to rise at some point man!! Maybe before next game comes out
Thanks Ruri for the great tutorial! I main LS (although GL is my second weapon), and it was a really well-done guide! I hope making it helps you stomach LS a little better but totally get if you're more disgusted haha. I think you especially did a good job capturing like the philosophy of the weapon, between using counters to raise gauge and helm-splitter to spend it. I also liked how you recommended Sakura Slash as an easier alternative to beginners. It's a stylish and cool-looking move and the ease of raising gauge is definitely helpful so hunters new to LS have one less thing to worry about when trying to learn counters. A couple interesting things that could be added (unless I somehow missed them in the combo section), going into the spirit combo after double slash lets you skip Spirit Slash I, and go straight to II. If you're using Step Slash, you have to go through Spirit Slash I first. Another thing is that if you hit an Iai Spirit Slash, hitting ZR will bring you to Spirit Slash III (or Dividing Slash) which skips the first two Spirit Slashes. If you nail the counter and hit the monster, then hit the two final Spirit Slashes, it'll level up your gauge twice which is super great. Finally you can special sheathe to cancel a Foresight Slash, even before the attack comes out in case you happen to miss it. Your gauge will be depleted still but you have a chance to counter again quickly. Also Foresight Slash won't act as a counter if your spirit gauge is empty, so Iai Slash to keep it passively refilling is super great. Your Gunlance tutorial is what got me to play GL as a seconday so it's cool to see you finish off your series with LS. Thanks for the great video!
Good guide from a non-longsword main. The only things I would add are that foresight slash is much less useful in this game becuase of how insanely no-drawback Iai spirit slash is, and that the weapon is entirely counter driven and because of ISS sakura slash is pretty obsolete once you learn the weapon. Also a small note is that you can use 1 normal attack between each of the spirit combo hits to gain meter if you don't have enough to finish the combo. It will make the combo noticably slower though so it's mostly only for when you get a knockdown or stun to build gage faster. One last note, you can cancel foresight slash after the backhop into special sheath to retreat into special sheath, and even cancel foresight into helm breaker if a monster is going for a bite or claw.
With Silkbind Sakura Slash, you can still spend the red gauge on your LS with Serene Pose, which uses 2 wirebugs to deal damage comparable to Spirit Helm Breaker but charges faster than 1 use of Silkbind Sakura Slash.
True. My only problem with that is that it makes the weapon super wirebug hungry and basically required wirebug whisperer and a third bug to get good damage out of.
Subscribed! I enjoy your guides out of all the ones out there. It's super clear, super simple, informative, and easy to follow. MHR is my first entry to the game, so it was hard for me to keep track of all the combos, Switch Skills, and when each should be used. Thank you for making them.
one thing about the Serene Pose that I'd like to mention is that although it is probably weaker than Helmsplitter overall... it is the undisputed best wake-up hit that the LS has!! Especially since the Wirebugs regenerate the moment that you mount the monster!
The fact this isn't just the video of throwing a long sword in the bin makes me disappointed, in all seriousness nice work on the guide despite your personal bias on the weapon
Why would anyone hate the LS? It surely is not the best MP-weapon but one of the most fluent and aggressively playable solo weapons. Also, bonus for style compared to some other crappy looking weapons (coughSAcough). Yea, no shield.. why block when you can kill instead
As a long sword main, I agree that 3 counters is too many. I use serene pose for wake up hits, but otherwise I’m using wirebugs for helmsplitters and wirefalls. I wish there was an alternate option for it.
It would have been kinda funny if you had first released like a 30 second video before with: "Longsword guide: Don't use it" and that's it. Also is that the Chameleos LS? That's awesome as hell
better way to start off would be quicksheath - zr the roar then spam zr cuz u can get to orange that way faster since you will shorten the combo by 1 part
I watched this video a year ago when I first picked up MHR. After practicing for a while, I got REALLY good at using it. Now it's like second nature to me. My advice is don't just button mash and spam your combos. Be patient and pay attention to the monsters' movements so you can land those counters. With each hit, wait a moment to see what the monster is about to do. If there's an opening, continue your combos, if your monster looks like it might be about to attack, prepare to counter. Foresight slash is the easiest counter but it has a smaller window. Serene pose is a costly counter but it has a huge window and you can transition into the middle of the spirit combo if it lands. If you use serene pose and the monster doesn't even attack you, you're stuck in that pose for a bit so be mindful of that.
Here to provide for the use of longsword: love the countering, love the moveset, feel bad for tripping my bud and absolutely dislike the extended extra counter for 2 wirebugs. With a friend, I usually pick a gunlance or longsword. For reference, the trip in MH: World was much much less unlikely.
Actually a solid guide with all the anti longsword memes though he did miss some things. The aerial spirit attack is different depending on your charge level and if you are on white or higher you can jump back on top of the ledge in what is called ledge hopping. Also the aerial spirit attack is different if used close to the ground and is much faster allowing for faster spirit combos and easier counters. He left out that the drawn double slash has hyper armor at the beginning of the attack. Finally special sheathing during a helmbreaker changes tge helmbreaker animation and shortens the animation commitment of the healmbreaker allowing for spirit iai slashing to instantly get back to red.
New follower and player. Thank you for all your guides. I main dual blades and am working on mastery of this weapon. I didn't know the slash counter and why I couldn't do the helm breaker. Thank you for all this!
I recently tried the LS for the first time since MHFU because I got a Quicksheath 3 tali with a Lv3 slot. And let me tell you, while I have a lot of fun with the weapon, I'm an absolute noob with it. I built a Crit Draw set that lets me get to 100% affinity after special sheath (with Narga weapons) but I barely ever land (or attempt) counters. It's really fun dancing around the monster with a mobile weapon like that, but I'm still not ballsy enough to counter everything. It speaks volumes to me about MH that the most popular weapon is actually the parry machine.
You seem salty about Serene Pose, but let me assure you that it is by far the worst move in the kit, and one of the worst Silkbinds in Rise. It can't be cancelled into anything, it's costly and the LS is already wirebug-hungry, you will be hit through it half the time, and most attacks you want to use this on will not let you regain a Spirit Gauge level as a follow-up. The use cases where it doesn't feel bad to use are extremely scarce. It's really, really bad, and at this point the equivalent of an overcosted Mega Potion.
@@Batterskull Yeah I main charge blade and counter peak performance just doesn't do it for me anymore. Switched it out for axe hopper as soon as I got it.
One thing about sakura slash, it's the best to do to charge up to a battle. Find some small monsters on the way, and then just sakura through them and BOOM, full gauge pre fight...
Thanks for the tutorial... really appreciate it. I played MHW previously and it was either I forgot the essential combos or the combos in Rise is slightly different. Either way this was a good refresher video thanks again!!!
Coming from MH Generations I opted out of the helm splitter for the Sakura slash, double slash, I use the menacing scythe (poison one) still working on incorporating foresight slash into my play
One thing he forgot to mention, he says that if you choose Sakura Slash you don't have anything to use the spirit gauge on. This is untrue, as you always have Serene Pose to spend gauge to do some pretty decent damage.
yeah, despite everyone in the demo saying "Don't use Serene Pose, it's a waste of space!!" it is actually VERY potent, for example, it's great for when you see a monster about to roar or jump at you and you know full well that you are too far away for successfully Foresight Slash (by that I mean Foresight Slash and the actually hit the monster with said Foresight Slash) and the Iai Spirit Slash is either too hard to pull off or you don't have enough time, use Serene Pose and you can both prevent the stagger and in return deal massive damage to the monster With my current LS build (a Dragonheart set with max Dragon Attack, Crit Boost, WEX, etc using the Valstrax LS with Valstrax Soul) I can deal over 1000 damage on the Toadversary if I have the Red Spirit Level, as well as getting a critical hit when I use the Serene Pose counter (fun fact, the best way to set it off in the training area is to use a small barrel bomb, unsheath your weapon and then immediately use Serene Pose) It's bloody good!
Lol good guide actually. You covered most things pretty well. Just curiosity. Is the long sword opinion something you had since you started in Tri? Or has it been more of a recent thing with World and Rise (or just rise).
In the G version think they will add more skills to select for weapons? I would love if each slot has 2x more skills to choose from so you can customize playstyle even more. Also some weapon specific skills would be cool to make choosing more than just the stats. Kind of similar how the Horn has different ones on each

Then adding *you should slot in flinch free* . And I know cuz my friend uses long sword. Thankfully he doesn't do it purposefully.
I told you guys! Ruri is secretly a longsword main, he's the biggest longsword fan. He always sharpens his longsword before he goes to bed every night
Ayo mad
LOL nice 1
Wish this would have been a pure parody video lol nice job as always Ruri!
For sake of LS Spirit it is similar to previous titles but changed a bit in Rise being
1.05/1.1/1.2x Base Raw Multiplier
1.05/1.1/1.2x Base Element Multiplier
White/Yellow/Red
In World and I believe all previous iterations it only affected your Raw attack and was Total Raw, by being Base now it does NOT affect any bonus attack you have (Peak Performance, Charm/Talon/Petalace etc), for sake of things like Attack boost that also have Base Raw multipliers those things will multiply together
For sake of Spirit Helmbreaker and Serene pose their damage uses a base value with the raw portion multiplied by 2/3/5 and Element portion multiplied by 1/1.1/1.3x (for the element this is in addition to the element multiplier the attack itself has), and for sake of the above multipliers per spirit tier to your stats (the 1.05/1.1/1.2) Spirit Helmbreaker will always use the set from after the spirit drop associated with the attack, and Serene Pose uses the Raw multiplier after the spirit drop (except for extreme inconsistent exceptions) and Element Multiplier from before the drop
I like to use Sakura slash and spend the gauge on Serene pose. You can deal good burst damage and get a knockdown on the monster.
Overhead into fade slash into spirit 2, 3, and 4
Foresight Slash must both absorb an attack, and land the attack that follows the movement in order to fill your gauge to full and allow for an instant Round Slash.
What an amazing series. Always get something new out of my weapons when I watch Rurikhan
One thing to keep in mind is that foresight slash will drain any spirit gauge you have (meaning the bar, not the actual level)
Let's gooooo about time u covered ur main! :D
Maybe before next game comes out
He finally made a guide for his favorite weapon!
Still coming back for your guides since PC version hit. Thanks for this wonderful material.
I've waited a long time for this moment.
Im dissapointed, actually hoped for a 10 second guide on the longsword before you release the legit version of it xD
Woah I liked your reposted feh meme videos
@@nutmilk5016 Oh a fan from FEH! Thanks! :)
I can't believe I am watching a Long Sword video from you... am I dreaming?
perfect timing! i got a wex 2 quich sheath 1 3-1-0 talisman yesterday, i think the game is telling me to play ls
Ruri making a LS tutorial... That's like asking a Carnivore how to make spinach.
Cool guide! Don't know if someone commented this, but you can still spend the spirit gauge with the alternative to helmbreaker in your Serene Pose.
You can also skip a spirit blade step after drawn double slash or iai slash (sp sheath -> X).
Ayyyy just in time, was gonna start trying to learn longsword
O lawd he actually did it, I didnt think it was possible...
As a long sword main, I agree that 3 counters is too many. I use serene pose for wake up hits, but otherwise I’m using wirebugs for helmsplitters and wirefalls. I wish there was an alternate option for it.
I don't like serene pose either. I also only really use it for wakeup with small barrel bombs.
It would have been kinda funny if you had first released like a 30 second video before with: "Longsword guide: Don't use it" and that's it. Also is that the Chameleos LS? That's awesome as hell
I was looking forward to this video for so long. So glad yousaved the best for last, right Rurikhan?
better way to start off would be quicksheath - zr the roar then spam zr cuz u can get to orange that way faster since you will shorten the combo by 1 part
Wow the girth of this playlist 😮 can't wait to glean any information I can from this.
Funny thing, LS essentially has FOUR counters since the drawn double slash has a guard point to its animation! 🤣
One thing you missed is drawn double slash goes into the second hit of spirit combo
Watching and commenting for le algorithm.
-lance main
Oh how long I’ve wanted this.... thank you.
Best weapon in the game by the way
Goodbye everybody, i feel the ban hammer XD
Feel my teddy bear hammer bonk
I don't plan to ever play the long sword but still watched the whole video because i know how painful it must have been for you to make it.
This is true. It has eaten me up, and costed me an advantage on 8 separate or so occasions. Within 40 hours of gameplay ^^'
Never been a fan of the longsword but I just might pick it up now because it looks super satisfying
That is the primary reason I main it. I like other weapons but pulling off counters just feels so good
@@Batterskull Yeah I main charge blade and counter peak performance just doesn't do it for me anymore. Switched it out for axe hopper as soon as I got it.
Very helpful, last played World and picking up PC version this week so this is a great refresher
Goat bro you nailed it I'm a longsword main and you nailed it bro
One thing about sakura slash, it's the best to do to charge up to a battle. Find some small monsters on the way, and then just sakura through them and BOOM, full gauge pre fight...
Man longsword is sick
Long Sword is in a weird place right now. It's overpowered as fuck yes but it's also such a joy to play with
Yeah, lots of people would play with it even if it sucked, it's just so stylish. Being overpowered on top is a bad look.
Ruri was definitely dying inside while making this 🤣 LS main FTW ✊
Been waiting for this and I’m 2 days late lol
I had no idea you could level up the gauge
from foresight slash so I already learned something
I use long sword for a decade now. But i'm still watching this because it's Ruri's favorite weapon.
This is untrue, as you always have Serene Pose to spend gauge to do some pretty decent damage.
yeah, despite everyone in the demo saying "Don't use Serene Pose, it's a waste of space!!" it is actually VERY potent, for example, it's great for when you see a monster about to roar or jump at you and you know full well that you are too far away for successfully Foresight Slash (by that I mean Foresight Slash and the actually hit the monster with said Foresight Slash) and the Iai Spirit Slash is either too hard to pull off or you don't have enough time, use Serene Pose and you can both prevent the stagger and in return deal massive damage to the monster
With my current LS build (a Dragonheart set with max Dragon Attack, Crit Boost, WEX, etc using the Valstrax LS with Valstrax Soul) I can deal over 1000 damage on the Toadversary if I have the Red Spirit Level, as well as getting a critical hit when I use the Serene Pose counter (fun fact, the best way to set it off in the training area is to use a small barrel bomb, unsheath your weapon and then immediately use Serene Pose)
It's bloody good!
Lol good guide actually. You covered most things pretty well. Just curiosity. Is the long sword opinion something you had since you started in Tri? Or has it been more of a recent thing with World and Rise (or just rise).
He really did it
man I love the time stamps!
Sometimes I'll continue to press A before I use foresight slash to draw out the animation so I can counter whenever I need
I like that Chameleos Longsword. it's like... 180% cooler than the classic one from MHFU
When I saw the thumbnail and seeing the video is 27 minutes I was thinking: "damn, that's a long way of saying don't play this weapon"
Best longsword guide even more better than arkez.
Holding forward with reckoning combo will slide you forward before the second to last hit.
So you saved the best for last, huh?
My guy actually did it, whats next, arrekz makes a pewpew shooter guide!?
I don't blame you for not liking this weapon, but God ii have so much fun with it
Let's get all the likes and view above the Gunlance Boizzzz
Oh the Views will definitely go above...
he forgot to mention that Fade Slash not only charges up the gauge quite a bit, but also skips a few Spirit Blade attacks
He mentions it. 22:15.
In the G version think they will add more skills to select for weapons? I would love if each slot has 2x more skills to choose from so you can customize playstyle even more.
Also some weapon specific skills would be cool to make choosing more than just the stats. Kind of similar how the Horn has different ones on each
Hi there is there a video for heavy or light bow gun or the bow? couldnt find any well made tutorials
Hehehehehehehe I’m never going to use this weapon but I’ve been waiting for this guide
Thumbs down so the algorithm hides this video! We can't afford having more long sword mains...
The most unexpected video of the year. LOL
Just started using this after using duel blades for 185 hours lol.
I miss my demon mode 😭
My boy Ruri tried to demonstrate the Foresight Slash with no gauge... Lol. It'll never work like that! 10:26
