    As a retired court clerk, I loved this run o She Hulk and laughed out loud many times. It is, however, no less realistic than, say, "My Cousin Vinny," These stories will never be realistic because in real life, most of the time, court cases are really, really boring. And to portray a real court case would take a movie of about 20 hours or a comic arc of 24 issues. So, just like in "Perry Mason" we suspend disbelief and never bring up the inaccuracies. It's still lots of fun. And my favorite was the one you showed in the introduction: Superman accused of murder, where he takes the jury back in time. That could be a video in itself. And it is done seriously, or as seriously as the Silver Age can do anything.

    • @vullord666

      I resent the my cousin Vinny example. It’s deliberately only entertaining BECAUSE court in real life is boring and Vinny understands like none of the actual legal processes at this time. I think a better example would be the “trial” for Batman conducted by his rogues gallery in BTAS. Or like any trial from Harvey Birdman (actually Insane how WB didn’t make the new bird girl a straight copy of the courtroom and lawyer setup from Harvey Birdman but using more DC properties than Hanabarbera with the popularity of superheroes right now).

    There actually is a basis for the idea that Jonah's anti-Spidey stance is at least partially motivated by profit. There's an issue where he's accused of that and he responds with, "If a crusade will sell papers then J. Jonah Jameson will have a crusade." But he DOES also have an anti-vigilante stance.

    • @thomasplummer8103
      @thomasplummer8103 3 роки тому +25

      There have been multiple cues to the idea in various media. I tend to think that while he has an anti-vigilante(especially masked, for character reasons) stance, the fact he will put up other heroes at times while still going on about Spider-man is probably a combination of SPider-man continually insulting him, and the fact that his anti-spider rants do sell papers. What I am saying is that I don't think it is a single reason, but I do think He pushes it a bit more often, harder, and in situations he otherwise wouldn't because it sells, and has become a trademark of the bugle.

      There have been multiple issues over the years where Jonah reveals why he hates Spider-Man, and most of them are different than all the rest. It's best to stick with the first one (written by Stan himself) where Jonah says to himself that Spidey risks his life every day for no money, while Jonah is only interested in making money, and that he can't respect himself while Spidey lives.

      I heard that in one of the versions of JJJ’s backstory it reveals a more complex and deep reason as to why he hates Spider-man. His dad was a war hero who everybody around him praised and loved for his service to his country but behind closed doors he was abusing his wife and son which caused JJJ to develop a deep seeded mistrust of heroes because he knows that behind their good natured exteriors there can be monsters hiding inside

    I think the lawyer side of She-Hulk is so under-appreciated and underdeveloped. If they wanted to do a lawyer story arc, they should've talked and consulted an actual lawyer Like Legal Eagle. And instead of having multiple trials, the entire run should be at MOST 1 or 2 trails. It should be a big deal, have long-lasting implications like fight superhuman registration acts, or suing evil cooperation like Oscorp. I know that this is blasphemy to say but the superhero part shouldn't be an interesting part of that character. Especially when the universe is over-populated with superheroes (a handful are lawyers too)

    When you said Dan Slott, I was like of course he would turn a She-Hulk issue into see how much I know about Spidey. When he wrote Spider-Man he was constantly flexing how much of Spidey's history he knows.

    • @jhornacek
      @jhornacek 3 роки тому +8

      Like how he said that when he got to write Spidey solo (after working with multiple writers during Brand New Day) he was going to follow up on something in ASM #1 that no one had ever followed up on, and how he was going to do something unique with the character? Then he had Peter decide to become a scientist and get a job at a lab, which had already been done years earlier in the Mackie/Byrne reboot.
      For all of Slott's claims about being Spidey's #1 fan and having notebooks full of story ideas and notes, his so-called Spidey knowledge is lacking at times. Like claiming that Betty Brant has a photographic memory in this issue - this has never been mentioned in any of her previous appearances, and there are multiple stories where she forgets something, which makes this claim of her having this skill make no sense.

Not only is Spencer's run fun, but he has corrected so many of the mistakes done with Spidey not only done in Slott's run, but since One More Day. Unlike Slott, Spencer knows that Peter is a responsible person that doesn't shirk his responsibilities. Plus unlike Slott he can also write a competent and likable MJ.
      Slott's claims that he is the #1 Spidey fan were soon disproven based on his stories. He is actually the #1 Doc Ock fan.

    The one thing I remember from the newspaper strip when I was a kid was an arc where Jameson published something clearly actionable, and Spidey looking into suing him. His lawyer told him that to file a suit or take the stand he'd have to reveal his actual legal identity. Thus Stan Lee shut down any pestering questions from fans.
    As for the suspension of disbelief...at some point creators are just playing volleyball without a net, or running with the basketball under their arm, or making a Star Trek movie. Even with comedy, if their not working with any actual rules, then they're not really solving any story problems, and I don't find it satisfying as storytelling.

The story is that Batman is dead and all the supervillains are claiming they killed him, so they hold a trial, listening to each villain's story to see who is guilty. Ra's is the judge and Two-Face is the prosecutor. There is a twist at the end, one you can definitely see coming but I'll still keep it a secret. This story also inspired the fan favorite episode of Batman Animated Series "Almost Got Him". Dan Slott is a great idea man. As terrible as his Spider-Man run became, some of his stories are good ideas. For example, Spider-Verse is a good idea - bring in some alternate universe Spideys, give them a common threat, it would be fun. But the story we got made no sense, was terrible, and included so many alternate Spideys that the real Spidey became a supporting character in his own story.
    I agree with you that this story likely started from the "Because I'm black" line and he created the rest of the story to get there. This is a funny and pretty unoffensive Spidey story, so it works here. It was stories like this and his Spider-Man and Human Torch mini-series that got him the job writing Amazing Spider-Man. Unfortunately the readers quickly realized that Slott works better writing occasional Spidey stories instead of an continuing series.

    Slott's She-Hulk was fun and bounced between TV level court chaos and super action comedy. It used a lot of lesser known characters, added some nice new ones, and had a lot of meta-textual jokes. The law firm was a nod to the founding fathers of Marvel and used trades as court documents which was great.
    Edit: Webs was late 80s iirc. It was mentioned back during the Inferno tie in book as something new and yes, it did give him a good boost of income for the time then. So even with time slide, Webs would be 3 years old or more by the time of the story so the money would have slowed a lot.

    Maybe the She-Hulk tv series will do a similar storyline.
    I kinda remember seeing an interview with Todd McFarlane where he mentioned he once had a similar idea to the "Because I'm black." joke with Spidey. IIRC, Spidey breaks up a mugging, the victim uses some racial slur about the muggers, Spidey gets mad and says something like "What makes you think I'm not black?"

    Mark Twain has been quoted as saying “We laugh the hardest when we laugh at ourselves”. I think that is what this issue is about. Just a fun fantasy story in a medium that’s primarily fantasy. Not meant to be taken too seriously by fans. Much like the remake of the Green Lantern sells power rings story you reviewed recently. (I still think it would’ve been funnier if GL tried to “unmask” Grodd. That’s not a Gorilla, that’s a man ba-oops....) DC seemed to be enjoying a laugh at their own expense, and invited us along.
    If you think about it, Spiderman could sue that weasily Parker kid for royalties from his book. Trying the case would be the Law Offices of Dewey, Cheatham and Howe, the same firm that represents Lois Lane every time she needs a divorce. But then what Super Villan would show up for that?
    Still, I’d love to see a courtroom battle between Jennifer Walters and Matt Murdock. Or Jason Bard and Jean Lorring. But then nobody would have much fun...

      How would that even work? Spider-Man and Peter Parker are the same person. Peter with the mask on is Spider-Man. Spidey without the mask is Peter Parker.

    • @jpboursaw4469
      @jpboursaw4469 3 роки тому +1

      Well I wasn’t serious, but I’ll give it a few jabs.
      1. His Lawyers hire the shapeshifter to impersonate Parker. You know, the one who was disguised, ironically, as the man with no name. But then he’d have to explain that he’s a Clint Eastwood or Back to the Future enthusiast.
      2. Peter goes it alone. Due to giving multiple testimonies/depositions, and lack of time, he forgets his Spider suit during the third or fourth quick change, showing up in only his mask and web shooters. The Judge throws the case out for lewd behavior in public. J.Jonah Jameson can’t stop laughing. Matt Murdock has no idea what’s happening, and Sue Storm the Invisible Girl cannot be reached for comment.
      There. Absurd enough for ya?

      The "Webs" photo book was a great ongoing background story in the late 80's Spider-Man comics. It was a credible way to explain why Peter had some extra money (other than MJ's modeling career), it allowed him to further distance himself from suspicion he actually was Spider-Man, and he went on a book tour where he had a few hijinks outside NY. Good times...
