- A Tribute to Robert Palmer.
Lyrics:
Johnnys always running around
Trying to find certainty
He needs all the world to confirm
That he aint lonely
Mary counts the walls
Knows he tires easily
Johnny thinks the world would be right
If it could buy truth from him
Mary says he changes his mind more than a woman
But she made her bed
Even when the chance was slim
Johnny says hes willing to learn
When he decides hes a fool
Johnny says hell live anywhere
When he earns to time
Mary combs her hair
Says she should be used to it
Mary always hedges her bets
She never knows what to think
She says that he still acts
Like he is being discovered
Scared that hell be caught
Without a second thought
Running around
Johnny feels hes wasting his breath
Trying to talk sense to her
Mary says hes lacking a real
Sense of proportion
So she combs her hair
Knows he tires easily
Johnnys always running around
Trying to find certainty
He needs all the world to confirm
That he aint lonely
Mary counts the walls
Says she should be used to it
Johnnys always running around
Running around
My dad used to listen to this all the time and I heard it in Asda a few weeks ago and didn’t have my phone to Shazam it, then the Renault advert came on tv just now. I’m so happy to find this! It’s like a wee sign from above. Lovely song. Rip Dad
Preciosa señal! Yo soy muy de señales y la canción es preciosa, hipnótica. Desde que era un niño de diez años me gustaba esta canción.
I agree with your dad, it's a great song.
Pray for your dad, the Lord God will allow him to come back to you sometimes. Especially if you're alone. Pray from your heart every day. Do it.
Some Renault commercial sampling this song took me here ✌️ great song 😁
Me too, i heard it, remembered how long i didn't hear any song from Robert... I bought this album cause this song and "looking for clues".
It's a classic!
Me too.nvr knew the great Mr Palmer sang this song...
Great song, shit ad, women cant develop engines
Same thing 🙃
One of the most under rated artist of his time.
He certainly was quite versatile musically.
A timeless classic that will always be remembered....
The list of instruments used to make this song is impressive. He wasn’t afraid to experiment👍👍
This man is a legend. This song is one of the reasons why.
Unfassbar, dass es schon 9 Jahre werden?!? Schade, aber wir tragen ihn im Herzen!!!
Back in the day, sometimes the radio station would only play a song once, and never played it again. Bits of a tune would stick in your mind, and you might not hear it again until 30 years later, by chance, accident, or randomly.
RIP Robert. Your music is simple, yet beutiful and timeless. We will be listening to it in decades to come.
RIP , Mr. Palmer 😞 Class, talent, one of a kind...
I can’t stop listening to this song lately, the synths are so beautiful 🥺
If you didn't experience the 80's first hand, you haven't lived!
"...That he ain't lonely-ehhe-ehhe." - gorgeous. After 40 years, finally really listened to the lyrics; so bleak yet real, so postmodern, and so disturbingly normal.
I was in Paris at The Sorbonne for a year, 85-86 and this was the theme song to what, if I remember correctly, was a Peugeot commercial. Nothing can go wrong when you are 19 in Paris with this music. Nothing ever went wrong...excepting some hangovers.
Tu Padre era Sabio❤. Esta música es atemporal y un Himno❤
ah a classic robert palmer song
This video is fourteen years old. I've been listening to the song for around forty years. Occasionally.
Thanks Renault Alaskan commercial ad!!!
Best song he ever did. Understated and classic.
Sounds dated
Agreed.
The whole album is good. Clues sounds very 80's. But I love that about it. He was embracing new wave. Did a Gary Numan cover on it. Had some Prince-y kind of stuff. Awesomely weird originals like "woke up laughing". I got the album on vinyl from the $0.10 bin and it didn't come off the turn table for months.
My favorite song
10 cents? Best 10 cents ever Beezard.
80s, so long ago......🎯🇸🇪
RIP Beautiful Man. This song suddenly appeared in my head but couldnt remember the lyrics.....till now......oooh Great One, Love this Song.....Our World is lacking such great talent....RIP R.P! xxx
Haven't heard this in probably 30 years. Where has it all gone...
:)
Graduated in 1982 loved Palmer's hits
It's like yesterday to me
A work colleague walked in singing this, first time I’d heard it way back 1980. It’s a wonderful track one of those that never date and easy to understand standing the test of time. RP was such a great singer/songwriter and performer I wish I’d seen him live.
Robert was the consumate professional entertainer and he was one of the Rock Legends who made the music of the eighties the best decade ever. He may be gone but he lives on via his music legacy to the world.Anyone who listens to his songs has to realise this guy was one of the greats. I for one will be playing Roberts rock video clips at my New Years party coming up and i know all my party guests will be loving the entertainment. Thanks for the memories Robert you were a class act man.
Underrated brilliant song. RIP ❤️
1980
R.I.P. Robert Palmer. Your great music and unique style will live on through the years for eternity.
Amazing, great🤌
50s to 90s have seen some of the greatest musical talent and It will be a long time before people like that come around again. Their music will still be played when everyting else has faded. Glad to have been part of it.
Too bad this song was ignored in the US. In France it's a big hit!
Je confirme ! Même que Une nouvelle pub Renault la reprend en 2021 ! C'est dire ! J'aime
😹 Whatever. We were VERY well aware of the song in the U.S. smdh
This song has something about it that draws you into it’s little world. Then you just want to stay there.
Forgot about this song until they started to play a cover of it on a new car ad.
Original will always be the best.
Same here! Fantastic nostalgic melody
Remix sucks
Every time the music video came on, my Nanna would call me into the living-room and say, "Look, John. Your song is on." And I would be glued to the TV set until it ended.
I reckon in 88 when I secretly loved this song and she makes my day, I was the only 8yr old cranking it. 22 years later, its on my ipod and still being heard
And is it still?
What about now?
32 years later 🙋♂️🤘
Dude are you still cranking it or not. Don't fuck with us anymore!! LET US KNOW!!!!

He probably died of old age at that point.
One of the best songs ever made, hands down.
Pure transcendant bliss. Mr. Palmer the consummate tailored Englishman softly crooning in his deliciously blaise way while his world crumbles only just a step behind him. A seething undercurrent in his thoughts one will never see. Much like Basil Fawlty. Well you can actually see Basil cracking lol.
RIP Mr P..thanks for a great song and the album Riptide
One of those few songs that I hear every few months and bring me to reflect upon what I did and how I grew mentally in those months.
But Johnny was always a part of me, and I guess everybody feels like Johnny once in a while
Magical era. We know that now.
Not only the best Robert Palmer song, but one of the best songs by Anyone
RIP Robert Palmer...gone but never forgotten
Genuis artist.. What a wonderful and original sound he gave us. Thank you Mr Palmer
This song smell good 80's
I’m Mexico City 🇲🇽 this jam hit hard back in the good ol days
An unforgettable song.
Stuck in my head since my early teens, and I guess my partner could relate.
He was so good up to this album. This song makes me happy and sad at the same time
Une musique qui me fait planer 💕😍. J’adore trop !!
Had this song stuck in my head for weeks. Makes me happy
Read up on "characteristics of music keys". I think this is in a feel-good one.
F.A.N.T.A.S.T.I.C.O Robert Palmer - Johnny And Mary 🌹
Fuck! this is class.i remember this on release, still Wow...
Hearing this for the first time. Thank you universe.
This really needs to be heard on a proper stereo, for full effect. The booming bass note inserted every now and then will positively rattle your speakers off the shelf. (Figuratively.) Very wise hook.
Fantastic singer/song writer, taken before his time, sadly missed! X
I have always liked this song! ROBERT PALMER R.I.P.
The best song ever. My partner is Johnny and my daughter is Mary. Thank you Robert x
When I was a kid, my mom had the LP this song was on and played it all the time. I hadn't heard this in at least 35 years until now, but it was instant recognition. So cool, some fond memories.
Mum
One word to describe this man. legend!
John and Mary.Great song.
timeless music, can relate to this even though, I wasn't even born in the 80's
From the first time I heard this song it felt familiar...like something I'd been searching for all my life
Genius - always loved him. The first time I felt desperate about someone I didn't know leaving us. Xxx
people die all the time but it really hurt in the feels when he passed. 😭
stone cold classic from a by gone era, sorely missed
I had NO idea he sang this - and now I know, it's bloody obvious, who can mistake that voice??
Quite simply a fantastic song by a much underrated guy.Charming guy to speak to much missed.
Pure class and talent
10 Jahre, oder irre ich mich? ist der gute Robert Palmer nicht mehr unter uns
Brings me back to the 80's and camping in Sudbury, Ont. Never will there be music written and composed so brilliantly, artists today could learn a thing or two from such great artists that us 50 year olds grew up listening to. Just my opinion.
AMAZING SONG ITS ALWAYS SAD TO LOSE ONE OF THE BEST MUSICIANS
Gone too soon. I never tire of his music.
I'm with lewisner below... Genius. Every Palmer hit song has a tinge of sadness or basic human brokenness about it. Blue-eyed soul music of the highest order. I am always "running around trying to find certainty"... (yeah, good luck with that.)
Tout simplement inoubliable ! Robert Palmer un géant !
Quintessential eighties... layer after layer introduced above the hypnotic minimalist basic track.
Yh its so eighties I fucking love it the '80 I was ma yh be 14yrs old or so
Love this tune. My favorite of all his work that I've heard.
This was the kind of music you could see coming during the eighties, although the really good music you really needed to look for, great song to kick off the decade.
Another legend taken from us too soon.
One of them most depressing songs ever written! Love it.
mkalex True. What is strange is that its an upbeat song that manages to be so sad.
@@grahamchurella3743 They got nothing on White Christmas.
It's a masterpiece
Paint it Black also has a happy groove with a depressing story line
Try the Bryan Ferry version 😄
Bella canzone senza tempo☺
Timeless song .I love it !
Great tune!!! RIP Mr P!!
so simple and brilliant!
Absolutly fantastic
2020 ❤
I can still hear this blasting from the cars driving by on the corner of 26th st North Bergen
One of my favorite songs
it is 2:30on this monday night and this song sounds wonderfull. Every word is so true.
This is an alltime classic. Rod Stewart swiped this for Young Turks.
Great music from a great artist.
A blast from the pas.! Great stuff!
Thank's for this song, Robert
Your music never dies, i keep play it, through the streets in my car. I´m 30 !
Gran Tema...q Gran Artista fue Robert 🎙🎙🎙🎙
It really is. It's one of these songs we can sing along but don't know title/musician. :)
Quelle époque !
for me, this is the last great Robert Palmer song. He was a touch of class in the fashion ugly 70's.
Been looking for this song .just knew the melody in my head ....thank you SOUNDHOUND VERY MUCH ...
tu, tu, tu... nananana :-) dieses Lied macht einfach gute Laune, RP - SEHR BESTEN DANK dafür...
I love this tu,tu,tu,tu.....nananana :-) :-)
great song with great memories
Simplemente añoranzas, que jamás volverán, que pena no a ver vívido, más intensos, esos años.
Love this song!
The Classiest piece of sophisticated electro-pop, made Bryan Ferrt seem like a "refuse collection operative" coolest Dude (y)
Bryan Ferry's cover of this is excellent.
Who's Bryan Ferrt?
yea just found it the other day, not bad at all.
+Otto Greenleaf A drug addicted homosexual porn star. That's who he is
He's a ferret. Called Bryan.
1 OF MY ALL TIME FAVOURITES.. 🎧
BRINGS ME BACK TO WHEN I WAS 15 YEARS OLD.I HAVE NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT IT BEFORE NOW ,BUT WHEN I LISTEN TO THE LYRICS IN THE SONG,I THINK IT IS ONLY ABOUT ONE PERSON, "JOHNNY",AND HE IS MABY TRANSEXUEL( MARY IS HIS "FEMALE SIDE") ,HE IS AFRAID TO TELL / SHOW PEOPLE WHO HE REALLY IS, AND HAVE INNER CONFLICTS ABOUT IT, AND IS FRUSTRATED ,BUT IT IS WHAT I THINK THE SONG IS ABOUT ???? GOD SONG NO MATTER WHAT .
Oh, the thunderous synth bass takes this song over the top.
SUPERB.... the sounds of my (continuing) youth.... GOD isn't music the finest output of humankind........................... turn it up to 30
