I liked your video and your comparisons it was very cool and informative you made alot of great points and points I guess I really never thought of when it comes to the Lion Master Models and their prices verses detail and size
Yeah in the grand scheme of things none of these are inexpensive. But these engines, regardless of scale, are pretty big! So it makes sense why they’re on the spendy side.
I finally found a good deal on a LC 2.0 Big Boy NIB and pulled the trigger today; I'm excited to run it and I'm not going to lie your videos had a little influence on this purchase. And it's true - the engine is just awesome regardless of the version!
@@Dadified86 Thanks! 4004 with the Sherman Hill set; all options aside I was targeting the 4014 but that one is like a unicorn/triple price. As a trade off I like the idea of this engine as a set with some nice cars. Plus that sound comes with them all!
@@LousTrains1523 Yeah one of the benefits of the LC2 LionMasters all having the same sound set is you can literally renumber them to any engine you'd like. Circus Decals makes a set that will cover nearly all of the numbers and letters on a Big Boy. I'm actually making use of that right now for a little project I should have wrapped up later this month. So you could make your 4004 number 4014 if you'd like to get a little crafty!
@@Dadified86 I was thinking about renumbering and might give it a shot, certainly like to see how your project pans out. I plan on testing out some technique on less special items first. For example, I have the Harry Potter set but there is no caboose for it. I don't know if the train had one in the movies/books, but I thought that be cool so I was going to take a inexpensive Railking lighted one and try on that first.
@@LousTrains1523 Cabooses we’re mostly an American railroad / freight train thing. So I don’t think Harry Potter would’ve had one but hey, adding one would be cool!

@@Dadified86 well that’s how much it can handle because if I add more it will cost the locomotive to wheel slip and damage it so it can only handle 12 car excursions with diesel helper and on freight trains I can have it pull 26 to 28 freight cars with caboose.
Very nice! Those Big Boys are gorgeous locomotives, for sure. I like the fact that the rear drivers on the semi-scale engines swivel, to allow them to negotiate the tighter curves, although the cab does swing out somewhat. It would be nice if Lionel would let the rear drivers swivel an eighth of an inch each way on the scale articulateds, so they could traverse tighter curves. It probably wouldn’t be noticeable, unless you were looking real closely at it. My layout is a 24x18 L, with O72 minimum, on the outer main, which I would like to make O81, if I can ever find any. I doubt that I would run the scale Big Boy, as I think that they overpower any layout smaller than Jason’s or Chris Montagna’s. Either way, they are wonderful locomotives. An excellent video, as always.
Yeah the scale engine almost felt silly running on my layout. LionMaster keeps the size up while also being flexible and looks good with the rest of the roster.
@@Dadified86 The semi- scale engines look fine on your layout. The only big scale engines that I would ever consider, are the S1 and the H8 Allegheny, my two favorite locomotives, although they would probably stay on display, rather than run. Will you be at York again? I know that it is a long schlep, from where you live. I have a new channel, Chooch’s Trains. Awesome comparison, I always thought the lionmaster was so big but next to that it looks so small. I agree with you that sometimes the lionmaster looks better around curves than the scale.
My LionMaster Big Boys dominate the line size-wise, but that’s also because I don’t own any scale engines that are larger than them. The Mountain is the biggest scale engine I have and it still looks good next to the Big Boy. But the actual scale big boy is head and shoulders above everything else here. It’s truly the Leviathan of Lionel… but it also dwarfs its consist. I almost prefer the even size the LionMaster provides
Used to own a LC+ big boy, sold it a while back to buy my scale Hudson but they’re actually VERY solid locomotives! The smoke units are great and the sounds are loud, nice whistle too. Love the lengths you take to run whatever you want with the space you have!
Thanks, Matt! It was tedious to reset the scene every time the scale one was running but I’m glad the work was worth it! Hope folks like the side-by-side running comparison, as my aim is to help those who are looking to add one to their roster realize the kind of space and clearance they need.
Have you seen the original LionMaster Big Boy No. 4024? It was made around 2004 by Lionel and has TMCC. 4006 actually has my favorite whistle that Lionel has ever made!
Oh wow no I haven’t seen those at all! Although 4024 should have the radiators just ahead of the headlight, not on the sides of the railings up top. I really wish they had made an alternate version for 4020-4024 but oh well
@@Dadified86 that's a bummer. At least for me, there never seems to be a shortage of opportunities to repair things on a train layout. In case it's helpful for when you get to it. The smoke unit board only has about 3 components, so it's reasonably easy to repair. Also saw posts on OGR forum for this model saying Lionel recommended the element should be changed from a 6 ohm to an 8 ohm element bc the 6 caused the regulators on the board to fail. Still have to determine if the fan on mine is supposed to run in neutral, but I appreciate your quick response!
@@stevewestrich now that you mention it, the smoke in my Legacy LionMaster Challenger 3985 doesn’t smoke when at idle, only in motion. So it might be the same since those two are very similar.
