This is the rough equivalent of an "I Will Follow" (IWF) for Bono's father. The first verse describes Bono's teenage (and adult?) alienation from his father, the first chorus his determination to be seen as an individual by his father. In the second verse, we get to Bono's continued hauntedness with regard to his father before and/or after his father's death leading to a rapprochement of some type. The second chorus, then, details growth through forgiveness. We get to "there is no them, there is only us"because now there is unity between father and son. Like in IWF, there's also a second layer of meaning here related to God. It's a very personal, emotional song.

MY song! 😍 I said it before and I say it again: I know this was inspired by a cause against HIV, but as a severe fibromyalgia + unknown auto immune disease + a party of chronic illnesses sufferer, I couldn't relate more to this wonder of a song and it could be easily applied to what millions of us go through❤️ first time I heard it, I felt it was talking to me, and it has since then given me a push to keep up the god fight no matter what! Because in spite of what ails me and how it took away who I used to be, I AM NOT INVISIBLE! ☺️

if u actually look into it, when the yellowscreen was still on they were pretty much invisible and when it reached the song's climax, they turned of the yellow parts and you could actually see them which makes them not invisible anymore. (great2 meaning and connection)
