I was afraid about the Carstairs' family tree but then we know that Cordelia's mom was pregnant so.. The descendants could be continued with this line.
You know when Cordelia cuts through the gate to the shadow realm with Cortana, and she sees all this worlds, one of them is "a beach and a bleeding moon" I immediately thought this was thule because Emma describes it that way in qoaad

this whole Cordelia x James situation is fertile ground for a lot of angst and pain, but BOY do I want it BADLY. also, I need Matthew to love himself again and I think this needs to be a WHOLE team effort.
I love how optimistic you are about Matthew's future because I've been really worried about his arc since the end of the book. He's not on the family tree (as deceptive as it is) and I've been SO WORRIED since I figured that out.

I have a reallly crazy theory, but I think that Grace's powers link to Ash Morgenstern's as mentioned in Ghosts of the Shadow market, Ash can make people love him and so can Grace. . .maybe they're related somehow by Lilith or the Seelie Queen. Maybe Benedict and the Seelie Queen had a child, Grace, or with Lilith because the Seelie queen is a faerie not a demon. Idk, i hope this theory is correct!

I like the nickname Daisy because Cordelia picked it herself, in the extras snippet she says she likes the nickname and James says “Why shouldn’t we call you Daisy, if you like it?” I like that it shows Cordelia’s self assuredness and even at a young age James admiring her choice and confidence. I do love Layla better, but I like that it is a family nickname.

@@mlsc2346 Yeah, they aren't alike...i love them either way. What i meant was that i love that both Jude and Cordelia have that same intelligent quality to plan things through any situation. It makes them such badass heroines uwu. 💕They have different personalities but they are very smart and i love that about them.

As much as I love the Infernal Devices, I might have a new favorite series. I mean, obviously the other two books will have to come out before I can be sure, but damn this was good holy crap. This book combines the ensemble cast vibe we got in TMI and TDA with the rich historical aura of TID

So i have a theory that when grace mentions at the end of the book that she needs the bracelet to manipulate james because of his blood, it may be because that her powers were given to her by belial and so he(belial) is immune to her powers. And as james is belial's grandson and shares his blood, even he has this immunity to her charms, which is why grace has to use the bracelet that was given to her by Belial to make the spell work on James and constantly have him touch or kiss her to reinforce the power of the spell.
Maybe later on James walks through a dimension where Grace never lost her parents, making her Grace Cartwright instead of Grace Blackthorn, and she's actually really nice. Maybe they dump evil Grace in that dimension and take nice Grace back with them and that's who marries Christopher.
I wouldn't be surprised if Grace married a Morgenstern later in life. But first I really want Cordelia to destroy Grace's bracelet with Cortana

Cassie has said the family tree in clockwork princess is not to be trusted but I don't know how different the actual family lines are going to be and I'm scared about it because everyone is already so close to being married to their direct cousins. Also Matthew and Lucie need to be together but I know it's not going to happen and it hurts my soul :'((((( alas
everyone is rooting for lucie and jesse but I just haven't seen enough of him to be so sure, right now I'm definitelly leaning towards matthew and lucie (which seems impossible to ever happen)
I have a theory that Belial's 'anchor' that he refers to in the epilogue is Sona's unborn baby.
My reasons:
- we've had weird baby stuff happen in every series so far (valentine's experiments, lilith's experiments, mortmain's experiments, the ultra powerful faerie babies)
- the way the information was given to us was weirdly random and I definitely didn't notice any build up to it - there was no allusions to her changing her behaviours in any way, which is a staple when it comes to pregnancy arcs,
- there's no third kid in the tree! And yes, the tree is misleading and all, but that feels like a pretty blatant missing piece!
Rachel Varghese so true especially about the last one! Cordelia mum is defo pregnant and that was sprung upon us very quickly. I think that that’s one of the key misleading details as the cairstairs line must continue otherwise cortina wouldn’t be given to emma right?
I couldn´t get through the last pages of the book without crying, but I was also SO FURIOUS at Grace and James and that whole situation. What a mix of emotions. I generally loved this book as an opener for a new series, so many plot lines & amazing characters!
Theory: Matthew is in love with James, not Cordelia? That's why he's jealous? He tells her he feels for both men and women, and the parabati bond wouldn't be threatened if the love was one-sided...

Oooh I didn't think about the idea of Valentine getting his ideas from Benedict Lightwood's book. Valentine probably chose to groom Robert Lightwood into the circle so that he had access to Benedict's works because the Lightwoods are probably ashamed of the works and keep it hidden in their family archives.

Okay here's something I haven't seen a lot of people talking about. Emma's mom's name is also Cordelia. So you're telling me that a woman named Cordelia Townsend married John Carstairs who has a distant relation who was also named Cordelia. Nah fam. Keep in mind that Cassie connected Clary and Tessa by just having their last names sound alike. Now there are two characters in two different series who have the same name. Something is afoot. I don't trust it.

the name fray was a combination of the “f” from fairchild and the “ray” from gray that jocelyn and tessa and magnus came up with when she first met with magnus so she could properly hide her identity. that’s why they sound familiar. it’s from one of the novellas in the bane chronicles
Izzy and Alec's middle names are Sophia and Gideon from whom they're decended. Emma's middle name is Cordelia-
Still, is weird. It could be nothing but it could be something . I also have a theory regarding the Carstairs owe the Herondales. I don’t see Alastair marrying a woman and the third Carstairs is a baby so I don’t think Emma Carstairs who has Cortana is descended from the third baby but from cordelia. It a very rare in that era to only have one child so I believe that one if the reasons for the fake family tree is that James and Cordelia has two babies and they decide that one of them should have the Carstairs name so she can give the baby Cortana. It s even a discussion in Cog between daisy Alastair and their father, the day Cortana chooses her.
Dylan Wickersham Oh and beyond that. Why does a Fairchild, Jocelyn, the ability to hide things into paper, a gift which could belong to someone with powers like a Herondale... Maybe the person Matthew ends up with Is Lucy after all, Cassie said on tumblr not to discredit a possible relationship between them. After all, she could marry both Jesse and math at different times in time.

Does anybody REALLY paid attention to the balcony scene, were James says “my parents have something for balconies” I laughed so hard at that part. And why about Matthew he deserves better I shipped him so much with Luce, but he is in much pain.
this is the first series where i actually really love all of the main characters and even though they make bad decisions they are greatly depicted as just people, with both flaws and virtues. i think cassie's character writing is better and better in every next book! also, there is soooo many good quotes to live by in this one! and also i LOVE how it's the first time we don't have all of the mains living in the same house and we can see the different ways of interaction between families. can't wait to see more of alastair and what's gonna happen with him, his relationship with cordelia is one of the best arcs in this book imo. and anna freaking lightwood I LOVE HER - also you forgot cecily in mentioning the badass lightwood women, hope to see more of her interaction with the kids!

I almost cried reading it because I went through the exact same thing with my own father. I never became a parent to understand him but the way that Cassie mentioned it in Chain of Gold really hit me hard. Also knowing that and rereading the scene where Will is crying about the death of his parents gives it a whole new level.

Same here, I went through adoration to resentment as I was growing up and learning more about my parents to now starting to realise my parents are merely people themselves; that they live their life the best they can the same way I'm trying to. I haven't arrived at the forgiveness Will had just yet, but I see it coming with time and Cassie just confirmed that suspicion for me through Will.

Theory: Wayland the Smith was an Iron Sister who made Cortana of Adamas with that infused feather and that's why we don't get a first name too.
Also, SPOILERS FOR TDA AND TLH, Cortana is just amazing when you think about it. It was used at the gateway for Cordelia to reach James, it stabbed one of the princes of hell, it went through the black book of the dead or whatever its name was, it killed one of the riders of mannan, who were supposed to be untouchable... we stan Cortana
Just finished both halves of the review, Christine ranting about Tatiana and Grace is everything I never knew I needed. They made my most hated Shadowhunter characters list back in Bane Chronicles, and it looks like we're gonna be stuck with them for quite a while. Really like how this series is starting out. The Nine Princes of Hell threw me off a bit, as I'm more familiar with the Seven Princes of Hell, but it was an interesting twist. Only one I didn't peg was Belial, who I had thought would be Beelzebub, haha. My brain always stores the oddest information, so thankfully I never had to go back and re-read or skim over the past books to remember things. Going into this I was very skeptical on the whole eventual Jesse x Lucie thing (I know the family tree isn't to be fully trusted, I'm just pretty sure they're going to be endgame), as I was fairly certain being raised by a nut job would have affected him in some pretty negative ways. Least so far the apple seems to have fallen far from the bitter, rotten tree. I'm just assuming at one point Jesse turns against his mother and then rejoins the Shadowhunters, hence the Blackthorns in TDA. Still not a fan of all the love triangles (or whatever shapes they're closer to at the moment XD), but overall the story is enjoyable. Magnus makes everything better, he is easily one of my favorite, if not my absolute favorite, Shadowhunter Chronicles character. Loved your review, hilarious as always

But I was thinking since Sona is pregnant once more, wouldn't that child continue the line and my brain started theorising that John might be adopted meaning Emma is adopted but then again the family tree isn't accurate, mate Cassie Clare said NOT to trust ANYTHING!
That part where we meet malcom fade and the first thing he asks is wether cordelia was a blackthorn because he needed blackthorn blood to get back annabel. That sent shivers up my spine

If you notice at the end, they talk about how James was meant to be “Prepared” for belial, so technically, graces bracelet not only hypnotises James, but was meant to have him accept belial, so maybe grace was in on it and makes up for it when she puts it on James in the end, that stupid bracelet!

Honestlly Matthew stole the show (well the book here lol) for me. He honestly has the main protagonist energy and personality with such complexity and mistery around him. I love James but next to Matthew his character and personality kinda fades while Matt is giving me such Will/Jace aka the main guy energy.
And about ship I honestlly wouldnt even mind if Cordillia ended up with him insted of James (altho I didnt really see the chemestry between them, but it could be interesting since James and Cordilia are predictable) I was thinking Matt would end up with Lucie but now I'm so lost lol I just want Matthew happy
So many emotions right now, I don’t know how I’ll wait for the next book, I think I’m going to go cry about every beautiful relationship in this story now

Okay, I'm super late to the party because I have had a terrible slump since before quarantine and only yesterday finished the book.
First of all, I just realized how it's been forever since I saw a full xtinemay booktalk and I miss these so damn much!
Second, Christine hating on grace blackthorn and Tatiana's dress for like 40 mins straight is everything I didn't know I needed. LOVED IT!

Magdalena was an iron sister who allied herself with the circle and is the one who made the infernal cup for Sebastian so it could be her.

is no one gonna comment on the parallels between lucie and ty! like in CoG lucie says that she wishes she was with james, matthew and cordelia to burn down the building because it has been a dream of hers, and one of ty’s most famous lines is “pyromania interests me”! also they both have a fascination for necromancy.
I have to say, it’s been years since I watched your videos like this, Christine, but I’m genuinely happy I got back to them. I started a book blog this past year and have gotten back into reading more, so it’s only fitting that I found your videos again. Also, a side note, but I just watched your reviews of the TDA books last night, and your eye color is how I imagine the Blackthorn’s eyes to look. It’s not too vibrant but not too murky either. There’s just enough blue and green to mix together to make this really pretty aquamarine color. Sorry if that’s weird, but I’ve always had a weird obsession with eyes haha.

ME TOO THO. Everyone is saying Lucie and Jesse but I just don't see it. I think Lucie and Jesse is gonna happen in order to allow the Blackthorn line to continue but I want Matthew to have happiness. He reminds me of Will for some strange reason

Amelie well it could be that they don’t end up together at all and whoever made the family tree(since it’s not accurate) put a dead person instead of Mathew in order to hide something. Like what if Jesse never really comes back and for some reason Mathew can’t be mentioned married to someone for some reason. I honestly do see there’s something between Lucie and Jesse though with the way he is with her and how Lucie is very clear on the fact she doesn’t like Mathew (it could of course change) Cassie did mention feelings could change like a lot on tumblr so we could really end up anywhere by the end of the series.
@@amelied1249 i just want Matthew to have a happy ending and i feel as if Lucie and Jesse's relationship won't work. The entire book through i was just thinking that Lucie could easily just be controlling Jesse. ( Not on purpose, just because she is so powerful)
Alx_Writer Lucie and Jesse are endgame. If you remember in Lady midnight (it was in TDA for sure) when Tessa and Jem met Blackthorns, Tessa said she wants to protect Blackthorns because it’s her daughter’s lineage. And there is no way Cassie could change that.
The future Blackthorns will get their signature sea-green eye colour from Jesse + Lucie -- I call it now

And in GOTSM The land i lost Jem and Tessa both seem to know about Matthew's problem. So i guess at some point in tlh his secret came out in front of others surrounding Matthew.

Thank you!!! Somebody is actually defending James in this situation!!! So many people have just been like James is trash and what not. But like, yes I feel really bad for Grace because clearly Tatiana does not care about her and has isolated her from everyone and treated her like crap, but she still did all of the stuff that she did and I can not ignore that.
