i loved all of this. ultimate geek out! but what i loved the best was hearing that TOOL doesn’t use a click. amazing. i’m a bass player and am lucky enough to have played with a drummer friend , off and on, since 1986, and we don’t use any kind of click. it just flows in and out. as Danny says” it breathes”. i love that

Yeah.. for me Beatles and even Led Zeppelin and The Who were all old peoples music for me too.. I think for me Nicko was the first drummer to stand out from the music I listened to when first getting into music as a kid - which was Powerslave.
Danny and MJK were in a band together called Green Jelly in the early 90's.
The album was called Cereal Killer...the most popular track was Three Little Pigs.
The video was a claymation video of the fairytale, with pot smoking pigs and the big bad wolf riding a Harley, awesomely funny to watch.

About not listening to the lyrics - the thing is that Tool's musical arrangements and Maynard's lyrics ands vocal phrasing are extremely complimentary and mutually reinforcing - they always point in the same direction, as it were. So to me, as a musician, it is very easy to be "inside the meaning of the song" strictly through the sound and orchestration of their music and vocal phrasing without knowing any the words. Most bands that I gravitate towards, (Porcupine Tree as another example), reflect this unity of direction in their songwriting, so for me at least, its not surprising at all that Stuart Copeland or Danny Carey doesn't listen to the words. Interestingly, Jon Anderson of Yes, has said that his lyrics are written more for the sounds of the words than their meaning.
Two basedrums ive had it, but they never seemed to sound the same whatever i did so yeah idk. But it looks great for sure. Also quite some drummers have them on stage and live only from one you see the frontskin moving, even when hearing fast double basework. Thanks again for your great thoughts and insights next to those of the great Danny and Rick.
When discussions of "best drummer" kick up, it never fails that Danny Carey is brought up (warranted). Then, there are always the guys that come back with "any jazz drummer is better than DC. I always wonder if and when they will ever realize DC is a jazz drummer. 🤔
Perhaps DC pays less attention to the lyrics because of Tool's specific creation process and sequence - the instrument parts are created before Maynard even gets involved, so the song (or at least the drum part) might exist in DC's head as an entity unto itself. Maynard's talent/role is fitting his work into what already is created, and from the sounds of it, his bandmates think he's doing amazing work.
The only highlight I see is some Grey coloring...
