- Опубліковано 23 бер 2019
- Hey plantaholics, so a friend of mine has been looking for a Monstera Deliciosa for some time, so I offered to give him a cutting, that I was rooting in water. Propagating houseplants is an inexpensive way to expand your houseplant collections. It’s also a great way to share houseplants with your family and friends. In this video I go over how to propagate your Monstera Deliciosa. I cover everything from where to cut, how to root in water, when to plant in soil and my potting mix I use. Hope you find this video useful. Enjoy.

You had me at "Plants have to be shared." 🥰
Sold* 😂🤣
Samee 😍🥰
“Plant is meant to be shared” wise words from crazy plant guy
My friend is not a friend because he sold it to me
Yes!! I love that- giving and receiving
Beautiful monstera. It's so weird for me to see this plant being sold for like 100 dollars... Here in Brazil you can find it naturally living in some woods, especially at the seaside, with 3 or 4ft leaves. Even bigger. They're insanely beautiful.
Think I'm going to snap a pice some day.
Great vid!!
Rogerio Riedo Picilli Here in Jamaica as well... Have a huge variegated variety growing in my backyard!! The leaves are bigger than my head! :)
it's so funny 😄 I paid 80 for mine in Seattle. I proudly took a pic and sent it to my mom in Venezuela. She then went to the backyard and took a pic of their gigantic monstera and sent it back. Her comment : " we didn't plant it she just naturally grew there ☺"
Rogerio Riedo Picilli you could honestly start an Etsy shop and sell them to all of us crazy Americans!!!
Unfortunately these live markets are highly regulates in both countries, the exporting here is hard, and the import in US is certainly insanely difficult, and it should be actually...
Fun fact, the monstera is not an IT Plant here in BR, here the designers use way more Ficus lyrata for example. Q

There’s a monsters in the library at my university and I’m honestly contemplating just snipping a piece of it off to propogate
Did you do it yet?
You can always just ask :)
That's so funny because my university just got one last week and I was telling my GF the same thing. Let me know if you do.
The trees in my university has bunches of monsteras growing on them. A few days ago they cut a lot of them off so I took some cuttings and am propagating them hihi
@@louisey1853 Please don't go crazy with "a lot of them", if everyone did that there would be none left for everyone else to enjoy
I found two Monstera’s by the dumpster so I grabbed them, put them into a new pot, gave them lots of care and love and now they are flourishing!! 🌱🌳🪴
EDIT: 😩My Monstera was so heavy I couldn’t get it inside when we had an unusual temp drop in Feb. and it snowed for two days (southern snow which is really ice lol)😳 I covered the entire plant including covering the top of the dirt but it froze😩 I was devastated! But good news....I cut it back and now I have new growth everywhere!! I am beyond excited-you have no idea!!
🌱☃️☀️🪴
‘Uh an 11 min video on this? I want something quick’ aaaaand I watched it all! Great info and a great pace. Thanks
So glad I found this video. I have a HUGE unruly monstera that I was about to put on Marketplace for free because its out of control 😅 Now I think I will separate it into as many plants as possible and keep 1 or 2 and pass on the rest. I got it originally from Ikea by the way 😊
Great idea! I'm so glad this way many people can enjoy its beauty. I love having plants in my home. 🙂
I can’t seem to add a photo
I was given a couple of large cuttings. I have potted them as they had some roots attached to the branch. They seem to require some support. After suggestions please. I can’t seem to add a photo.
I took a cutting from my grandma's giant monstera deliciosa back in November and today, 4 months later, it finally started popping out a new leaffff
Impossible Object Yay. That’s awesome. 😆
Great, now grandma must be wondering when you will start popping out new babies 😹😹😹

I have a few propagations of this plant. I have done it this way and potted. I also experimented with small chunks that don't have leaves or a stem, just some nodes/arial roots and they have been growing leaves also. It's fun to watch them grow! My Monstera mother plant is over 30 years old.
I love plant parents ... i get my hubby involved whenever I can.... I even give him a list once a month, 2 or 3 plants to nursery shop for me.
TeedarkAngel That’s awesome he does that for you. 😊😊
I love this idea, what a good way to encourage him to be involved! For sure keeping this in mind for my next relationship.
You are so wonderfully wholesome and this has been a nice break from the text heavy components of my horticulture course. Thank you so much for sharing your plant wisdom!
Thank you! This is one of the best tutorials I've seen so far.
This was great! I needed this to begin my first propogation, didn't want to screw it up! I love my plant baby!
Love this! I have two baby Monsteras from Sam's and I can believe how fast they produce leaves. Thank you for sharing this very detailed video. Take care.
Thank you this does help me. I am more of a visual and hands on learner and your video(s) are perfect. Most people's videos are just talking/voice overs so thank you!
Thank you so much for this video. My house plants have been a so important to me during lockdown, and now I just can’t live without them. Thanks for sharing your wisdom ✨👏
Lucky friend! So nice of you to grow him a plant.
nays needle Thanks. He was so excited for it. 😊
Amazing! That's a lot of roots for 6 weeks! I'm excited to propagate mine now.
OMG that String of Hearts
Your Monstera is stunning! I came here because I managed to get my hands on two propagated Variegata and they both now are growing roots in the water 😍
Thank you, for the best video on propagation and potting a monstera . A friend gave me a cutting before she moved away and honestly I didn’t know what to do with it,until I watched your video. The cutting has a good root system and today, I plan to pot the plant. I found your channel by chance and subscribed.
i had been looking for a monstera for the longest time and when i went home for spring break i found a relatively large one at the grocery store for $12!! that was two weeks ago and this morning i noticed 3 new leaves eep super exciting! thank you for this video 🤗
Vivian that’s such a steal deal!!!
What grocery store was that 😂🤣. No but seriously, good for you... enjoy your great fortune
Vivian I, too have been looking for one & I went to Lowes today & found one for $11! I was soooo hyped!
Plants Over Pain - JerseyShoreGirl It was at a kroger! i was honestly shocked
@@vivian4865 I bought mine from Kroger too!! Except mine has spider mites 😢
Its funny how you call your plant a “he” and I always call mine a “she.” 😊😊
Mine is a girl too😊
Haha me too they ALL "she" 😅
Just got 11 plants. I haven’t got to naming yet😂
My plant actually looks like 🌱 but only one leaf. He’s ugly and dying but he’s my little ugly boy :) Hoping to get him some help so he doesn’t die
Mine is a girl. Her name is Francesca.
All your tips are v helpful and I watch your videos often
Beautiful plant
Can't wait to try this! I also bought my monstera plant cheap from Walmart and it was small when I first bought it. Now it is humongous and keeps growing, so I want to start propagating it and give them to friends and family.
Super timely video. I'm in the middle of propogating my monstera. I didn't really understand it's care or growing habit when I first bought it from IKEA some 2yrs ago and it became really big and unruly. No longer fitting my living room space, I relocated it to a guest bedroom. The mother plant started to fail after enough neglect and I'm now hoping the propogations from it will allow me to start over with a more manageable size of a plant that I understand a lot better now.
Debra Warrick That’s great that you started to propagate before the plant died. They are beautiful, but can get pretty massive and take over your place. 😆
Thank yoy for being so thorough and *showing* where to make cuts, etc. As a visual learner, I appreciate this so much.
Smashing that subscribe button!
Thank you. Glad the video helped
This worked SO well for me ! Thank you for the tips. I’ve propagated 3 monsteras from a large plant, all successfully 🎉🎉
Thank you ! I have one that someone gifted me and she got out of hand. It’s nice to know I can make other plants out of her and not just prune and throws her bits away.
Plant look great your friend will be happy with it.
I love this plant because it is so easy to grow.
Thank you for this! I’d read two different “how to propagate monstera” articles and was very confused about how exactly I do these cuttings. They made it sound like just the wrong move is going to be instant failure, but watching your video took away my anxiety! Thank you!
I am so excited to find this helpful video. I got my Monstera Deliciosa from Trader Joe's in the winter and it is growing like crazy! So I wanted to share it with friends - as it is so pretty!
You are such a great friend. You are so excited to share your plant. awesome
Haidee Haidee I always say the best way to get others to love and appreciate plants is by sharing. 😊
Great video tutorial, thanks! Also coconut coir (fibre) is a fantastic and more sustainable alternative that can replace using peat moss (which is mined) in the potting mix recipe. Great for indoor plant and seed raising mixes.
Great video! I love that you refer to the plant as 'he' / 'him'. I bought a Monstera for my daughter as a housewarming gift and I am going to ask her for a cutting. Now I know how to cut it and plant it. THANKS!
Thanks for your very informative video! I stumbled across your video after a friend asked me how to propagate them, because I've got a veritable "jungle" that I transplanted from our last home about 20 years ago ... but I've only ever done that by splitting the roots, but your aerial root method makes propagation even easier.
Omg thanks for this video I was just about to put my monstera cutting in soil without growing out it’s root system 😱 I am so subscribed now I can’t wait to watch more of your videos!!!
Me too! Isn't that a thing though?
I’ve done it straight into soil and had great results.
Wait! In those few weeks, it grew two new leaves and those crazy roots 😍
Thank you for showing me. Most informative step by step beginner's guide and looking forward to seeing more in the future. Keep up the good work.
Thank you! I did cutting of lots of other plants but never monstera so this was really useful! I am going back to school in two weeks and want to bring some of my collection to mh classroom so this will be perrrrfect !!! 👌🏽
i've never been a plant person but i find your videos super relaxing/entertaining to watch
Thanks. 😊 no better to get into plants then now
@@CrazyPlantGuy I just got a pet frog and I'm sure she'd love some plants to climb on/destroy
Very informative video. Thanks for this lovely video. The String of heart behind you is fantastic! Can you please make a video and tell us how you did it?
I always go back to this video when I cut roots for my monstera 🌱
What a sweet and kind father those plants have! Thanks a lot for this video, I loved your explanations and I feel now ready to propagate mine :D
I just purchased a large Monstera for $85. It’s got large leaves over 15in and the wingspan of the whole plant is ~4ft! I’m excited for my new plant!
Wowza that sounds amazing and huge. Congrats
omg that string of hearts is so FULL
Thank you so much for sharing this video. I was only looking for a tutorial to simply transplant my Monstera (which has been getting really big lately) but now I'm definitely propagating it!! Thanks a lot!!
I just bought mine for $12 at HEB & it is huge! Such a steal!
Thanks for posting early. I have to do something like this with some of the plants, need to research how to do that.
Thank you so very much for this video. I have a monstera that is more than ready to propagate, now I'm confident that I can do it successfully.
michelleharris312 That’s great. Good luck and happy planting. 😊
Thank you, my sisterinlaw just gave me one with roots. It's the first plant I'll own. Thank you for this video!
Thank you so much! This was really informative and clear. I've been putting off propergating my Monstera but you made it look so easy.
Beautiful plant! Mine has gotten huugeee and I'm dying to propagate it! Would you be able to make a video about one wrapping around a moss ball like you mentioned in this video?
I found a monstera deliciosa for $9.50 (Php 500) has 2 leaves with splits, but no holes yet. I was thinking if it's worth the money :D then after I heard you bought yours for over $40 - I'm gonna get that deliciosa tomorrow! 😄
Thank you. My monstera is growing well but wasn’t the cheapest plant, so now have taken a cutting and popped it in water 😍🪴
Thank you so much for this! My sister has been looking for one for so long!!! Your channel is awesome!!!!! Xoxo
I got mine at Walmart last year too! They are so expensive now!
my monstera was £7 from sainsburys and he's a big as yours was when you first got him 😎😎
Super helpful video, thank you! Mine is getting huge and this really helped me to understand how to tame it a bit and made two more for friends and family.
I love these plants been trying to buy a large one or some time but have found some smaller ones and
is doing well this guy is good
Is that a string of hearts behind you?? God I’d die for that. Lol
Great video. Now I just have to get the plant. Checking Walmart first. Thank you
Donna Stovall I always check the plant section at most stores that has plants. You just never know what you’ll find. 😊
You are amazing! Thanks for sharing. I've been trying to get a green thumb and have been failing big time. Really appreciate the insight and am excited about bringing my babies back to life. Love your plant choices too. You've covered all of mine! Thank you so much
Glad you enjoyed it. 😊
Thank you for sharing this! I can't wait to see the roots growing on my plant!
Just cut a couple of mine off for the first time and I’m having a minor heart attack.
I’ve cut 9 cuttings off mine, first time, roots coming after 3 weeks, phew
The first time that I propagated mine, I prayed and still had a great deal of anxiety! I had a huge guy and she was getting so top heavy! I am glad to report that two were given away and I am looking at the beauty of this beautiful plant! My bestie and my sisters have seven leaves from the two or three that both were given! That was almost two years ago! Now it’s time to propagate again from same plant!
Boy another slight elevated anxiety attack! We are true plant parents (these are my babies)! We feed them with a great fertilizer, we talk and change water or soil and feel saddened when leaves are drooping etc, but let’s remember they’re here to make us Hoppy!
Tk care!
I'd love to see how they're doing!
Great VIDEO!!!!!!! I lucked out and was blessed with 3 huge cuttings. This is exact the info I needed!
I got myself not 1, not 2, not 3 but 4 monstera deliciosa babies. I'm so excited to see them grow. 😍😍😍😍
My god😲 is that a string of beads or heart beside him. That distracted me from the monstera.
Seems like the Chinese lantern plant to me
It's a string of hearts! I think he has a video about it.
Me was obstructed by those nice bowls
Well he does well with his plants
I was thinking the same thing. I don't think I have ever seen such a healthy, full pot like that!
Yes!
I see some monstrosa on some trees nearby, I'm going to collect them!
Love this video. I gave my plant direct morning sunlight and the light actually cooked my plants 😩 I saved what I could and they have grown so much (I used seamoss water)
Super easy to watch video. Wish I had found this yesterday before i hacked away at my dying plant! Fingers crossed I can save part of it now.
Hey let’s be friends. I need friends like you lol
I finally found my monstera. have always wanted one but got really desperate after visiting Hawaii and having an overdose of monstera lol
I found one at a fancy store today and was glad it was 35$.
I found one Saturday at Lowe's it was 14.98, check your local Lowe's I bet you will find one
Love you CPG. Your ama must be so proud. 💜
Here in São Paulo we got them everywhere, they just grow in some gardens on the street ...I just cut out one for me a few days ago, so easy to find them, and the variety is also incredible.
Can u propagate from a branch that does not have a node, thanks
in my experience, branches without nodes tend to die because it's starting with no root system vs at least one root.
Nope, not possible.
This is the sad reality I'm facing now... Everything from the buttom of the node started to rot. Just placed it in water now after cutting. I will update you guys if it can propagate even without airial roots to start with.
It worked for me but it took a VERY long time. Couple of months
@@kikomachine8276 Any luck, Kiko?
I’m desperate to get my hands on a Monstera Albo, if you know where to get one or a cutting in our part of Canada, let me know! 🌱🙏
Thank you for the detailed video. I look forward to propagating my Monstera Deliciosa!!!
...I got my monstera deliciosa in June 2019 at Lowes. A one gallon black nursery pot with four growing stems for $15. I kept it outside on my patio with other plants in indirect bright light. It started right away to put out leaf after leaf non-stop all summer. It must love the humidity. Each leaf nicely fenestrated.
The one I got from market in India was planted in hard clay soil. So I washed off all the clay and I was surprised by how strong root system was there even in that horrible soil. So I guess monstera are tough plants and can manage well in poor soil as well.
How much from indian market bro??for these monstera?
₹500 from ugaoo.com in india... Brought about 3 weeks back
Can you be my friend? I would love this for a birthday gift 😊😂 great tips very informative, thank you
Thank you for getting straight to the point with clear instructions 👌
I’m getting a Monstera deliciosa tomorrow. I’m so excited! Your friend is very lucky!
Sheena Shines That’s awesome. Congrats. Monstera is a great plant to have.
Definitely check Home Depot. I found a huge guy for $24.99.
I’m following a plant page on fb and someone actually had the nerve to post a monstera Deliciosa for $3500 (Canadian) .... 😳😳 I found that very ridiculous
kelsey dick Did someone bought it? 😂
I’m guessing it’s either huge or variegated??? But yes some people are tripping with their prices
Variegated varieties are going for £5000 here in UK 😱
Ah thank you. I bought a monstera at a plant fair after I moved go uni 2 years ago. He was so small when I got him and now hes so top heavy hes pulling his own roots out. I was just going to trim him and repot him but it seemed a shame to loose the leaves so now I'm propagating instead 🙌🙌🙌
Thanks for the video! I will be trying this out over the next month, I want more of these fun climbing guys
So in 6 weeks it grew two full adult sized leaves and was sprouting a third?
Hi! Great video. I have a question - what happens with the mother plant when you cut the cutting for propagation? Since you cut the last leaves, does the mother plant stop growing?
You read my message mind! That's something I was wondering too... Did you find the answer to the question?
When I cut mine, a new node grew close to where I took the cutting!
@@coleenpq thank you, i'll try it (i have to, because one of the leaves is dying anyway)
Thanks for clear and concise teaching. I'm excited to go into back yard bamboo forest and search for monstera cuttings to propagate.
Thank you! Very helpful. Your monstera is beautiful.
Beautiful monstera and cutting!!! I have been wanting to cut my Monstera too to root it as well.
Question does the part where you took the cutting from get bushier?
It'll usually start a new "branch" where you cut from! might take a little bit, or it could pop up immediately! Just depends
im ready to save my dying monstera (ಥ_ಥ) lol i left her in the patio and was in direct sunlight for a hot minute
Wow look at those roots!
Thank you well explained from water to sunlight i just propagated my swiss she was growing in crazy angles again thank you
