They can only repair so much before the parts aren't available. Also, buses have to pass a DOT inspection every year. If they fail inspection, they have to be either repaired or scrapped. There's also certain diesel engines which aren't legal to fix anymore. The emissions laws forbid certain repairs on certain engines.

From what I know in my district the buses usually sit in the yard for a year with all county markings off then they get sold off and if they don’t sell they get striped or destroyed. Right now my district is getting rid of 2005 internationals.
I bought one 4 years ago and now it’s a camper. I took all the seat except the drivers seat and the first row. Put a walls up wear the first 2 seats end, laid laminate floors, added a water and waste tank. I also put a master suite with a full size bed, a small gas stove and generator to have power to the microwave and lights. It’s has a small shower and sink. It also can sleep 6 comfortably or 8 if you like the people your with. I have about 7500 dollars in it. I saved money on supplies by getting marked down flooring and such. We go to festivals all over the states in it and has paid for its self.

As someone who frequently travels through Ocoee, I can tell you where a few hundred of them wound up. They take rafters to and from the rapids and there’s seemingly hundreds of them.
I know at my school district, at the bus garage, the newly “retired” buses are used temporarily as substitute buses and then are later just parked and scrapped for parts on the lot. Probably about 15 buses on the lot are being scrapped. They actually just phased out the last Freightliner bus from substitute service and the operational fleet is all Thomas C2 and IC CE… and ONE bluebird which was purchased after one bus was involved in a crash and they were in need of a replacement.
In Mexico, they are sometimes used as public transportation. Often until they can’t run anymore. It depends on the city though. Where I live, bus routes are leased to private parties, who often service them with these decommissioned buses. They have been phased out for new, Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, Ford Transit, or other similar vans in the last couple of years, though.
Where I live, there’s a lot of big farming companies here, mainly Apple and Cherry orchards. My school in fact just did this recently with one of its busses. Busses around here get sold off to those farming companies, they’re used to haul around workers, usually out of country workers like H2A Guys or just guys who don’t have a license or a car. They just have their school names taken off and the stop sign is never used again, because we’ll it’s not a priority vehicle anymore, it’s just a business vehicle.
Some retired buses go to other school districts, usually through auction. We have some amazing spares with 200k+ miles on them that are over 18 and have to be retired, but they still drive fantastically. We also have amazing mechanics.

A neighbor of mine in Port Clinton OH bought one that was scrapped, body and frame was intact but the electronics, engine, and axles were gone. Turned it into a nice little clubhouse for their nieces.
My dad was a school bus driver they had a retired bus that was in an accident they used to store tires in and was in the middle of a horse field. I guess the horses protected the tires or it was a cool lawn ornament. The rear exit door did looked kicked by a horse

It’s actually pretty sad. So many memories on this on one bus (Bus 253), it was a 2011 Bluebird D3FE, it was my route bus two years ago and then it got replaced by the bus I ride now (Bus 290), a 2019 Bluebird Gas Vision, I also love the vision too. There’s also this one bus, bus 275, it has been my after school bus for the last four years, it’s probably going to be out as a spare in the next year or so, it’s a 2015/2016 T3FE.
Rip the old school busses that were retired.. It's good for them getting used for other things, but they can like fix the parts up and maybe out like a modern chassy on it. If not then maybe like an interior and engine upgrade.
I've seen increasingly more people buying old school busses and converting them into RVs. They look so dope to me I just want to get one and go camping in Yosemite or something.
Also Puerto Ricans buy them and fix them up and use them as school busses here. Last year our company got a "new" bus and it was a 2008 IC. But we love our old buses with crazy sound systems and lights. School buses are pretty much party buses here
In Panamá they are called DIABLO ROJO because most are painted artistically, mostly with red paint. Until a few years ago they were the only public transportation.
In my school they use one for “The dangers of drink driving/texting and driving” and the set a car on fire in the middle of the field and have kids in the school that were in on it get dressed up all gory and get airlifted to by the local hospital, got to say it was pretty badass.
The name of the colored bus that says "Guate Tecpán" 😆 that's in my country in Central America. Guatemala 🇬🇹. I don't like the way they drive, but they are cool. People here modify it so it has a lot of lights, give it names and have loud music sometimes. People find love in what they do sometimes so it's very cool to see a group of this 👌🏻 I still don't like how they drive but it helps a lot of people so there's that 😇
My mom drove bus for 20+ years. She got to watch the fire department light her old bus on fire and tear into it with 3 crews in an international training program. She thought it was awesome.
Many school buses are converted for use throughtout the south in melon farming. They cut out the roof and windows, and are much cheaper and better configured than stake trucks.
Some guys who buy a lot of car parts will buy buses for their engines or frames or whatever and then use the bodies for storage since it’s cheaper than buying a container or building buildings

Some school buses get bought by individuals to be converted into motorhomes in their backyards. It's an awesome second life for retired school buses.

I worked as an extradition agency years ago. We started out with school buses that we customized.

I have a friend who buys school buses and restores them and sells them
