  • This isn't so much a how-to video as it is something for the curious. We're doing more work on LBCs, and that includes mounting and balancing tires. This video shows how that happens as we mount a set of new tires to an MGB, and gives you an idea of just what goes on at your local Discount Tire store.
What may be more helpful is that we are also set up to mount and balance wire wheels, complete with the correct adapters to properly balance them! Some shops are able to do this locally, but you'll want to be sure of 2 things.
First, can they install tubes? Even tubeless rims are better off having tubes installed when you're talking wires, since the sealant that closes off the spokes can be disturbed over time. Not every shop has experience with tubes, and getting it wrong can mean a flat tire when the tube fails.
And second, can they mount the wheel on the balancer correctly? All spin balancing machines use adapters, so just asking "do you have adapters?" isn't a specific enough question. While some wheels can be balanced using 2 cones, the majority still should not be and an adapter specific to center spoke wire wheels is mandatory to get a good balance. Ask to see the adapters--if it's 2 cones, then that's wrong.
As always, thanks for watching! Hopefully you're able to benefit from our video library and keep your classic British car on the road!

Very interesting - thanks for posting! I can’t remember if you’ve said in a previous video - do you have an opinion on the Vredestein’s? Thanks.

I do. I'm running Vredesteins on both my TR6 and the big Healey. They're a great tire with vintage looks, and performed well in local hill climb events I've done. To be clear, modern tires from companies like General or Michelin are better. That said, the suspension on a 50 year old car is the limiting factor at a certain point... not the rubber.

Okay, that’s very reassuring. I may try a set next time around. Thanks!

You need to do enough tires to make it worth it. Figure if you can find a used machine cheap it'll still be $1000 or so for both the mounting and balancing machine. At $80 per set to have them installed elsewhere, you need to do 13 sets before breaking even... plus you have to put it somewhere. This one sort of fell in my lap cheap, so it was worth it with how often I use it.
