Those sizes ( 1/4, 3/8, 1/2) are the size of the ratchet square- youll then need the proper sized socket to go on there that fits your lug nuts. Its two pieces- a ratchet and a socket. Check out this video that might help: ua-cam.com/video/3v3hLvuO_KU/v-deo.html

I have a trolley jack and used it to jack up my car far quicker than the scissor jack in the spare kit I would jack it up until the wheel leaves the ground and then put the scissor jack underneath the car and quickly jack it up until there was tension so if the trolley jack failed the scissor jack would hold it. took less than an hour to rotate all the tyres.

If you’re talking about jacks, especially scissors jacks (which you should never use more than one of at a time), and not actual jack stands, that’s definitely true.

Its quite a bit of work over using jack stands - but is helpful to know and makes sure you check in on that spare tire too!
When you let the shop do the tire rotation, you don't know if & how they do it. Was curious how to do it at home as I don't have jack stands lying around. This, my friend, is the best YT video on tire rotation, using the spare tire is genius.

i was thinking the same thing. my car is FWD, so the rotation is different. while that might seem obvious, i wonder if those tire shops really care to check these kind of things.
last time i got a rotation, one of my hub caps werent clipped all the way in and i didnt notice until i got home.

I use this method but I have a full size spare that I just include in the rotation. It makes my tires last about 25% longer and I never have to revisit the first tire until it's time to rotate again.
And while I have each tire off, I clean rocks out of the tread, clean brake dust from the backs of each rim, pull out any nails, and plug as needed. And I check and lube the caliper bolts with every other rotation because they'll otherwise be seized when I do my brakes.

Use a floor jack. Takes about 50% of time off this method.
Those scissor jacks that they put in the trunk are for emergency use. They really aren't suited for what you are doing, although it works obviously.
It's funny reading the comments how many people don't realize you can use a spare to rotate tires. Thought it was obvious.
You must use a torque wrench to spec for safety reasons. Also, check the torque again after you drive the car the first time after you do this. You'd be surprised to see how some of those lugs can come loose. Blue Loctite is also a good idea.

Today is the day to rotate my tires on my 2015 impala. Thanks to your great way to rotate them I won't have to worry about how to get the whole car off the ground. Sure, I can jack the car up on the jack points, but then you can't place the jackstand in that spot. These cars are being built so low, and with very little strong steel for jacking the entire front or rear, that it's tough to do.

Thanks mate. Using the spare is so obvious when somebody points it out. The amount of times I've rotated and struggled with the car nearly falling off the axle stands, especially when the car is jacked with one jack in one corner and the the other axle stand or jack diagonally in the other corner. Close to falling off the jack so many times. I've just rotated the wheels using my usual method and swore that there must be an easier method and found your method. Thanks

Very useful share.a few times I got frustrated with those oil change with free tire rotation and then later they’ll say my tires can’t be rotated because they’re old or worn out .but I know they’re still good.and doing it at home is scary and for me not safe that two tires will be removed at one point.and leave the vehicle unstable.

It’s amazing what a legit floor jack will do and how much time it will save. For 119$ you can get a 3 ton floor jack. For another 35$ you can get a pair of jack stands. All at harbor freight. Makes all the difference.

We don't have harbour freight here but from what I understand is that those products are prone to failure

Great idea, and a lot safer than putting the whole car on stands. I didn't want to take the car to a shop, because they often bend the jack points by not using a rubber puck or slotted lift. My 2015 impala is tough to lift. There are few points, especially in the front center, to lift the vehicle. You just solved my problem. I'm not sure, but I think after moving the tires, my air pressure indicators will not be in the right place. I believe there is a inexpensive device on amazon to reset all four tires. Thanks for your help
You can also lay your car on the roof. Gives you much better access to the tires and it's much less work. Just make sure to lay it on a large mattress so you don't scratch your roof.

This is good but the combination is different depending on whether your car is front or rear wheel drive or your tyres are directional. One thing you shouldn't do is put your feet under the tyre with the scissor jack in use, it's just for changing a flat. If the scissor jack fails, your feet are under the tyre you'll trap your feet.

Dont the TPS sensor have to be reprogrammed after the rotation?
Were you tightening the spare to the same torque as other tires or just tight enough to hold that spot of the car up?
Just enough to hold it in place - wasn't driving anywhere with it on.

@@GanderFlight Well, I just put jack stands on all four corners of the car. And put the front tires to the rear, and crossed the rears to the front.
I've been scratching my head about tire rotation lately. I drive a Miata, not crazy, but I do play with it (within reason). I've rotated tires religiously my whole life. However due to "life happenings" I've neglected rotating for two years. I've also NOT seen my tires wearing much quicker than when I DID rotate them. I've always been told (and believed) that rotating tires nearly doubled their life, I'm don't think I believe that anymore. This is my third year on my current set and at the rate they are wearing I'll be starting to need a new set around tax time. That's absolutely par for the course with my Miata, averaging about 3.5 years per tire set.
My level of driving aggression hasn't altered, and I've actually been driving FAR more to stay out of the house (daughter and her 3 howling 2- to 5-year-olds crashed back in on the wife and I a couple years back). If rotating doesn't really make THAT big a difference in wear, at least on a light car like the Miata, I'll just forgo the rotations and run a staggered wheel/tire setup for the more aggressive look.
Interesting observations. Sounds like you've got it dialed in, aligned and balanced pretty darn well!
I think generally the rate of wear is a negligible difference for most daily, clear-weather driving. The only time you will likely notice it will happen to be when you need it most, in adverse weather conditions, rain, ice... or if you drive it like a race car, where it can be a pucker vs wreck difference. This video is pretty good; I think you could adapt it to just a single moving jack stand, keeping in mind some rotations are more complicated (AWD/4WD). If you break it down into single steps though, the "three on the floor" idea should still work.

Yes, engage the Parking Break regardless of chalking the wheels of the Aircraft.
Main reason I personally don't want to do this method of using the spare is because my spare is a pain in the ass to get out it's under the rear of my SUV and requires a special wrench to lower and remove and it's beyond filthy under there, so in my case I actually find it easier to just jack up the whole thing and leave it suspended while I move around to all the tires

I dont trust scissor jacks had one of those fail before. A pump jack is my go to every time.

Dude, after having a scissor jack totally fail and the axel crash to the ground, I wouldn't recommend putting your feet under the tire...especially when it's not bolted on. It's one thing to have a tire fall on your feet. Another to have the axle crash down if that scissor jack were to fail.

Yeah, definitely. It even says in the manual to never get under the car while it’s on the jack, as it can slip and fall off of it. Those scissors jacks aren’t the most reliable, unfortunately

When criss-cross the rear tires, you are supposed to remove the tire and mount in reverse left & right to make sure both the inside and outside trend of the tires are used and worn evenly.
You'll have to follow the recommendation for your type of tire AND the type of drive your vehicle uses- AWD, 4WD, 2WD.

Are you saying to unmount the tires, flip them around, and then remount them? Tires aren’t designed to be unmounted and remounted that many times. That *is* necessary when switching directional tires left and right (which is why I’m not a fan of them), but that’s because if you don’t, they’ll draw water to the center, making them worse than smooth tires. If you have directional tires, just rotate front-and-back, and don’t bother switching sides
Just did this, Only difference was I only put two nuts on the spare (only has 4) while in situ as it's only to hold it there and not going anywhere. And they weren't very tight either. Saves time. Tip put music on while you're doing it, it's very tedious.

Good call, thanks for the great video!! For awd vehicle, is the pattern gonna be left front to left rear and left rear to left front? Also, do I need to torque the spare tire to make it safe? Or hand tighten will be good enough?
If you're not driving on the spare, just using it to hold the space while rotating, hand tightening all the lug nuts is what I do personally - use your own judgement. Many sources suggest a diagonal X pattern for AWD vehicles: www.bridgestonetire.com/learn/maintenance/tire-rotation/

Unlike what some may say, I would not recommend the X pattern ever. It depends on whether torque is biased to the front (which I’d recommend the forward cross for) or to the rear (for which I’d recommend the rearward cross).

Don’t you have to have the front wheels checked for alignment after changing the tyres?
I've never hear of that and its never been recommended to me when I've had a shop rotate tires either
The only need to have a front end or 4 wheel alignment done is if the tires are wearing uneven or if their is a problem With steering, such as pulling to one side or a shimmy or vibration felt in the steering wheel.

My 2021 Jeep Cherokee has a air pump and mopar branded fix a flat instead of a spare.
That's a bummer - kinda sucks that Jeep of all manufactures isn't providing a spare tire.
And if your sidewall is ruptured, you’re screwed
Also, so did you jack up two tires? Or just one at a time. Meaning, the back tire when you lifted it up. Then did you go to the front tire and left it up on jack so now both rear and front tire both in the air at the same time? Or do u just jack one up, removie tire and put the spare, then put it on ground and then go to jack front. Very confusing. But i liked at the end when you showed rhe rotation pattern at least. But show next time the lift on jack stand pattern and show if its one jack at a time or your lifting two tires up at a time.

Can someone confirm the rotation? Because google is tell me if you have front wheel drive, than the front 2 tires go back on opposite sides and the back tires go forward on the same side. Or does it matter?
For directional mounted tires the arrow direction is toward the front. I.e., the direction of travel. In these cases front to rear. That being said always put best tires on rear. If not the rear end will come around too easily when emergency braking. Mitigate by placing best at rear.
A good jack and impact driver will make this 100x faster!!

You certainly can do it like this, but it's much easier with a proper floor jack and some stands, IMO. Not to mention safer. And if you're the type of person who is going to rotate your tires, you will probably find plenty of other use for those tools anyway.

This is normally how I rotate my own tires but using the spare takes forever having to mount that spare over and over. Trying to find a DIY faster route...
In the time you stuff around doing all that with the crappy car jack, mucking around with the spare tyre and tightening and loosening nuts by hand I can rotate my tyres at home with a trolley jack, 4 stands and a impact 5 times.Great video nonetheless I suppose if you want to make it harder than it has to be and you don’t have the correct tools.👍

Not sure if I missed it, but you need to mention directional and non directional tires. Your example is not proper for directional tires, they can’t leave the same side.
You are absolutely correct - I did not touch on directional tires. If your tires are directional then they can only be rotated on the same side to keep them rolling in the designed direction.

Define "todays tires" all my research says that absolutely depends on FWD vs AWD vs RWD and the type of tire.
Incorrect. That is only true with directional tires, which are designed to push water out past the edges (if installed backwards, they’ll pull water to the center). Your manufacturer may recommend front-and-back because it’s “good enough,” but the forward- or rearward-cross method is always superior for non-directional tires.
That will save me $40. Great idea. My tires go straight back and straight forward. No criss cross. It says it in the manual. Tire shop made a mistake and criss cross ed them the way you said. That was a noisy mistake. They really vibrated.
All that hand jacking. You could use a power drill with a hook. Depending on how the end hooks up.

Are they directional tires? This is one big reason why I’m not a huge fan of them.
