I just sold my OLED and might pick up a cheap used LCD model again, or something else that's cheaper. I drive for a living and like to take a handheld with me for breaks, and I just didn't feel comfortable having a $650 device in my car, in addition to my phone. That's a big score for a thief, and I'm not made of money. The OLED screen is nice and all but I found that I got used to it, just like anything else. After a while I didn't really notice it anymore. I think as humans we always want more--that next best thing--but the LCD model is still incredible and plays all the same games. Hell, you still can't buy one in a number of countries.
Oled 4 the win!
Than you brother, I appreciate this review. I will mainly game on my PC and you are right the LCD is perfect for portable gaming and not too expensive. The PS Vita had great graphics and the LCD Steam Deck is so much better than that. On average how many hours on a full charge do you get brother?
@@CLstreams No problem, man! With the LCD you're looking at around an hour and 45 mins with a newer AAA title. With less intensive games you're going to get way more, all the way up to 8 or 9 hours depending on the title.
Currently the 512GB LCD Version here in Germany is on Sale for 398 € (USD 425) and the 512GB OLED costs 569 € (USD 607) Yeah, def going with LCD.
You forgot to mention that the Oled new wifi has built in wake function for bluetooth while the LCD model doesn't have that feature but only restricted to the Steam controller. This is useful for oled model to be plugged in the TV in sleep mode, you can pick up a bluetooth controller to wake the steam deck from bed
New to the Steam Deck and couldn't be happier. So glad to be a late adopter, the OLED is lit.
Worth it for the improved battery alone ,oled screen is an absolute bonus for me
Same for me. It much closer to the Switch battery life playing on the go.
@@smidlee7747 Yep 100%
Nice analysis. I've had the LCD for about a year now. I use it at home alot but with a portable monitor mostly or handheld when watching TV. I've only traveled with it on the plane twice during this time. I use it also when I'm waiting for my mom at the hospital and such or at some restaurant. I don't really feel a rush to upgrade just yet unless I will have to travel frequently and being on the outside more (bus rides, trains, long trips, etc) which then I will need a better screen.
As I make preparations for a very long flight in the coming months, this video helped me to really take a closer look at the Steam Deck OLED. I do wish the performance was better on the more demanding titles, but I suppose that's what the desktop is for. Thanks for the video! Well done!
Just bought the 512gb OLED and paid $300 extra to have it upgraded to 2TB and Hall magnetic anti drift thumb sticks. The etched glass anti glare screen is very fuzzy and ruins the image on the screen
Nice upgrades
Great job! Continuously improving is important for technology products.
So glad I found this video! Because of this video I just ordered my 512 Oled model and can’t wait! Thank you for this video!
I have the LCD version since launch and I've always hated the cheap display and how much backlight bleed it has especially in dark situations. I would love to get the OLED but i need to sell my LCD i just can't seem to know how to do it.
Selling it can be hard, luckily I sold mine to my brother in law. Maybe try asking your friends and family first.
@@techwithashley yes trust me I have but the most I'm getting is $300 from people I know which is way too low since its the 512 gig model and I was hoping to get at least over $375 to get a decent return for it. Alternatively though, I'm hoping a windows based handheld OLED PC comes out soon since that's ultimately what I'm looking forward to the most. Cause then I'd keep my LCD steam deck as a secondary handheld.
@@July9326brand new 512 lcd is $450. For a used one $300 is a fair price. I’ve seen them go for 250-300.
Glad I’ve found your channel!
Welcome aboard!
2 little technical details that were easy to miss(even valve didn't emphasize them in their marketing) the Oled version got a modest ram upgrade over the lcd. The lcd has ddr5 5500 MT/s ram and the Oled has 6400 MT/s ram. This isn't massive but it can make a noticeable difference in certain games, it seems like it helped more with frametime consistency than anything else, although some games get a few extra fps as well.
The other thing is even more technical, they apu got a die shrink from 7nm to 6nm making it more energy efficient. The shift to oled along with the larger battery and especially the die shrink all combined to make that hugely noticeable difference in battery life and improved thermals.
The oled is 100% worth the upgrade if you are a fan of the platform. The 90hz display allows for such a wide array of fps capping options and the hdr oled implementation looks fantastic. Solid review 👍
Thanks for the correction!
@@techwithashley np, I just need out of the tech stuff 😅
I was going to write this also :-p. But loved the video anyways.
Great video I broke my foot right in the middle of March 15th and I decided to get the LCD model had it for about a week when I decided to upgrade and return my LCD 64 model and go for the OLED 512 I think it was the best choice. I wish I had seen your video sooner if you like gaming on the go or just in your hand instead of getting stuck to your desk. The steam deck in general is an excellent choice.
The 512GB is especially a good choice!
did the same with screen protectors tho im glad i got the etched glass still. it doesn't scratch at all. and can be cleaned and never scratch even without microfiber. the glossy scratches easy so i change out the tempered glass screens, sometimes rock it with nothing lol
Thank you!
Which base lines did you get on the OLED ?
Something I thought of with my LCD, was if I have an issue, most parts are easily replaced. Same can be said with the OLED display. If it ever burned in, replacing it with a new display would be relatively easy. It's currently not possible to replace the LCD with an OLED. So there's that debate bunked. My deck is my primary gaming console. I have a PC and play on there too, but often, when my wife comes home from work (I work too, but tend to be home first), I just shut down the PC and grab the Deck. For that reason, If I were to play a 5hr gaming session in a day (a great day!) the Deck would have clocked about 4 of those 5 hours. So, yeah, the OLED would be worth it, as well as the battery life, which is a huge plus, since I take my Deck on the road with me.
Hey Ashley. I’m big with my steam deck oled lately so UA-cam recommended your video to me and I appreciate your commentary on the two options.
However I think there’s one thing.
The OLED model doesn’t have the exact same memory as the LCD. The original is 5500MT/s and the OLED is 6400MT/s so there is a slight difference but a minor one.
Same size different speeds.
That’s true! Thanks for the reminder
Got Oled awesome device Also upgraded ssd to 2Tb and Micro 1Tb Love it
I really want an oled but dont want to buy one and then a deck 2 releases with better gpu... Any word on deck 2 ? I have a deck lcd but knowing how much better oled is with my switch oled, its tempting to upgrade !
I have not heard of any rumors of a Steam Deck 2, but considering they just released the OLED and the steam deck is selling well in general, I am not sure if they feel pressured to push something out so soon... although, I hope they don't pull a Nintendo LOL
@@techwithashley I think they said of Steamdeck 2 that will be out late 2025, but its not worth to wait that long. Especially to people like me that mostly will play indie titles that doesnt demand performance
I don't know if anyone's mentioned it but theres many games that aren't supported on LCD that u can play on OLED with no resistance and no force launch or anything.i owned LCD for 3 months before I gave in an upgraded and wasn't immediately impressed until I noticed I could play games I wasn't able to play before on og deck. Other than that games that allow 90fps are just downright gorgeous.
Good overview but whats disappointing about the OLED is that its not flicker free it uses a low PWM frequency which leads to eye strain and headaches to those of us who are sensitive to it so I'm going with the LCD version.
nice video 🔥 i got my lcd second hand for 330 $ 512 + 512 gb sd card amazing deal!
Very nice!
Batterylife is first. Refreshrate comes second, nice to play games like Hades with 90fps, HDR is third. Nice to have, but not essential for gaming.
Changed to the oled this week so worth it. Nice video. I subscribed 😀
Awesome! Thank you!
One advantage of the LCD version is that you can overclock the screen to 70hz and lock the fps to 35. It's more smoother than 30 and way better than 40 fps thats constantly dropping.
I guest you can't lock the oled to 35 fps
Yes
yes
Better battery, better charging, better screen, HDR, and better ram. It really is worth it. I have owned and have extensively played both. The oled steam deck is way more than a screen.
Honestly tempted to buy an oled or a rog ally...
It depends on what games you want to play. The steam deck display it gorgeous and can play most games and has decent battery life for a handheld. While the ROG Ally has a higher refresh rate and more powerful processor, but updates can be more annoying because it's a windows 11 device versus the console like experience you get with the steam deck.
I don't think the OLED model is worth the money.. PS love you
I found oled fans are obsessed mush even though both are some cpu gpu the updated in screen, battery, some less thing
I was thinkin about upgrading my steam deck lcd to the oled I decided not to so i spend my cash on a new 11 inch iPad Pro M4 instead its time for me to upgrade my iPad Pro 😃
Nice! I love my iPad Pro M4.
I seriously can’t look at an lcd display anymore. It’s like watching a VHS tape! Oh wait I’m too old. No one will get that reference…🤦♂️
bro ur like 5
You going to be miserable since the vast majority of TV are LCD. Stop acting like LCD haven't improved in 20 years. Now OLED does look better but LCD look good also. Of course a complete black screen you will see leakage on LCD but otherwise they have a good picture. I have a 65" OLED TV and then bought a cheaper 65" lcd tv for my bedroom. The lcd tv is a much better deal as OLED looks good but not 3 times the cost of the cheaper Samsung TV.
