Hey everyone! After spending more time with the Steam Deck, I've noticed the colors seem richer on the screen, and I think adding a glossy screen protector might have helped reduce the anti-glare effect. It's definitely improved the look for me.
Yup! I did the same thing. I have the 1TB model with etched screen and ended up putting a screen protector immediately but you can see some of the color’s richness comes back when you add a screen protector. I don’t think I’d want to use my Steam Deck with no screen protector anyways lol
I think the etched screen issue has gotten out of hand. People make it sound worse than it actually is, and that makes other buyers ‘see’ the issues without being necessarily sure about them. It’s just like a placebo “hate” effect for something you wouldn’t even notice by yourself in the first place.
True. There are also people who just perceive things differently with their eyes. Like me, I'm a photo editor, digital artist, and amateur photographer, so I'm very conscious of certain visual details. I've used anti-glare screens and anti-glare screen protectors plenty of times... and the color noise, light diffusion, reduced sharpness, and reduced contrast stands out A LOT to me.
I’m not understanding… are people saying the screen is bad? I’ve had mine for like 7 months and I love the etched glass. It has zero reflection and I can play outdoors easily and see everything great
@TheRealSmallville I had sd oled 512gb glossy and I which if it was anti glare it's looks like laptop screen, 💻 unlike the glossy is more mobile when you zoomed you will found foggy things on the Grey
no lmao. it’s not subjective, technically speaking colors reproduce better on gloss displays. i don’t think it’s a big deal since u get the plus of anti-glare, but it’s definitely not placebo.
Play a game with HDR and you'll be blown away. Something like Ori and the Will of the Wisps really shows off the OLED in its best light (no pun intended). Also, the reduced colour vibrance is only in high ambient light conditions, where with the glossy you'd be dealing with reflections instead. I much prefer the anti glare to distracting reflections, but YMMV.
@@DrakonR You clearly haven't used both. The anti glare doesn't have much impact on colour but it makes a big difference to glare. I hate glossy screens, especially on portable devices where you can't always control the light conditions you'll use it under. Buy what you like.

Hi, some models of OLED steam deck suffer from really bad muira, although it is somewhat rare to get a OLED panel with really bad muira, still good to know. That might also hinder the visuals in comparison to the LCD steam deck. One of the big features of the OLED deck is the bigger battery + 6nm upgrade efficiency. Around 40-50% more bettery life when compared to the LCD model. At 6w I can play PSP games for around 9 hours on average. Also have you tried other games with inky blacks? Limbo comes to mind as the game is mostly black/grey/white. I don't know much about Stray but some games put a weird grey/green filter in post processing that increase the black levels, might have had a part with what you experienced. Also also, try out "Ori and The Will of Wisps" and "Tetris Effect" on the OLED. The HDR implementation in these games is insane. Cheers.
Thanks for the info, I'll look into other games that have a true black, which a lot of games I've been playing recently don't. After a little more time, I can see where things look richer in color, and putting a glossy screen protector did help as well. Maybe it's not as "rich" as the 512GB considering the material used, but for now, ignorance is bliss, and I'm happy.
