I'm fairly new to bourbon and haven't tried any rye whiskey. Every time I go to my favorite liquor store they keep telling me I should pick up a rye whiskey.
Just moved near Michigan border for work and it’s crazy how much stuff that is hard to find in Kentucky is around here...stores with baby Saz just casually sitting at MSRP and several ECBP collecting dust. It’s refreshing!
Nice video, new subscriber! I really enjoy Old Forester Rye Russell’s Reserve 6yr Rye Elijah Craig Rye Sagamore dbl oak rye Sagamore px rye Rare Breed rye Some are more costly but all great tasting!
Great video. Ive seem in so many blind taste testings Rittenhouse win against all of the ones you've chosen. I would like to see you blind tatse test these ryes.
Great list! Have found Old Forest 100 Rye makes my favorite Old Fashioned cocktails. Have tried Bulliet Rye, High West Double Rye, and many different bourbons...but OF 100 Rye was my favorite. Buffalo Trace was top billed for our bourbon version.
I have all these. I probably drink the Rittenhouse and WT101 Ryes the most, almost always in cocktails. The WT101 Rye disappeared for a while but came back; I've never seen it in anything other than a 1L bottle. Have you tried the Templeton Rye Maple Cask Finish? They use old Templeton Rye barrels, fill them with Vermont maple syrup, rotate them for 2 month, dump the syrup, then finish the Rye in the seasoned barrels for 2 months. I've got a bottle but haven't cracked it yet.
The only problem I have and this is not with regards to your list but rye whiskies in general is the relatively low percentage of rye required to make it a rye whiskey. I have not had the Old Forester rye but it says a lot that it's at 65% rye and that it is listed as the highest. I think the rule for rye whiskey should be the same as corn whiskey which I believe is at 80% Thoughts Chris?
@@bluecollarwineguy4447 they are all barely legal ryes and I think it depends on the person. Me personally I enough a sweeter rye (closer to bourbon profile) unless I really am in the mood for some serious rye punch! I can appreciate and respect a 95 5 rye for what it is. My personal flavor profile tho I enjoy finding the rye notes, but not be overpowered by them
@@Bourbinsane I've been thinking about this just because I love my rye whiskeys. I personally think there ought to be a sub category of rye whiskeys below 80% mashbill, similar to light whiskey. Call it "light rye". That way most of us that enjoy a good floral/spicy rye whiskey can have some truth in advertising. What do you think?
@@bluecollarwineguy4447 I for sure have no problem with that at all. It further defines the class and trh more definition the better. Idk what it would take for that rule change tho hah
Mike's Liquor in Brookside and Waldo carry Old Forester Rye. It was $25 the last time I purchased it. In fact, it was an employee at the Brookside location who turned me on to OF Rye by offering a sample.
Hawklord - Mike's in Brookside does NOT currently have Old Forester Rye. I was there this afternoon and an employee said it's been months since they've been able to get it.
What tasting notes do you typically get on KC SiB Rye store picks ? I found one for $42 that the store has had some good picks in the past . Anywhere near as good as pikesville ?
Most definetly! Both very similar proof but I have had some KC Rye picks that are lots of baking spices nice rye bite on the back of the palate! Love the 115 proof tho
@@Bourbinsane Not sure exactly how many 100% Rye whiskies there are on the market but the one that intrigues me the most is Balcone's Texas Rye made with 4 different types of Rye. I am really liking higher rye% in the mash bills, so OF Rye at 65% is next on the list!
Balcones Rye is really good. Heavy heavy chocolate they definitely use the chocolate Rye. There are some hundred percent right with you out there but would have to dip into Canadian whiskey to find more of them which I don't really want to do haha
Absolutley! Probably would have been #6 for me. Definetly a Spicer rye being 95%, 5%, but that dill note tends to always overly stick out to me. As mentioned cocktails solve that though!🥃🔥
Bruhhh...where’s the Hochstadter's Slow & Low?! Idk if it qualifies because it’s essentially an Old Fashioned in a bottle, but it’s tasty as hell and only $20-$25. Ever had it?
Bourbinsane right on. Never had stolen x. Which do you prefer between that and S&L? I usually prefer straight whiskey/bourbon, but Slow & Low is tasty as hell. If I have to chose any sort of “flavored” whiskey, Slow & Low is my jam.
I’m huge fan of the old forester rye.. my go to old fashioned rye.. my local liquor store was out of old forester rye so I thought would I switch to wt rye and I gotta say I was little disappointed. Maybe I’ll give it another go and see if I come around to it.

Shame that WT 101 Rye is not available in Canada, anywhere. Have or had many bottles of the other 4 and they are all good in their own way.
