📽 📽 IN THIS WEEK'S VIDEO: Pikesville Straight Rye (110 proof, $50) vs Rare Breed Rye (112.2 proof, $65)
We put this matchup into our head-to-head pool because they're two high proof rye whiskeys that are fairly readily available and at a similar price point. We wanted to see which was preferable to our palates double blind to see where we may want to spend our money in the future.

I'm on team Erin with the banana split debate! Erin describes the classic Dairy Queen split recipe.
I'm guessing this video gets de-monetized by UA-cam!
But the DQ banana split just has vanilla soft serve, not three flavors of ice cream.
Y’all are having way to much fun and why I enjoy your channel so much. Loved this head to head especially since you had left Pikesville out of your rye list.
The fact that Erin cracked up first at suck-session is awesome. Nice to see where her mind is at.😁
Great video guys!
Such a funny tasting, loved it! Erin has a great sense of humor.
Love the quality of the videos , they may seem simplistic but its obvious that you guys put in a lot of work to make these happen. Thanks for all the great content.
Keen eye, Komil. We really want the content to be down to earth and relatable, but there's definitely a lot that goes into both the production and thought behind the way we do our videos. We appreciate you noticing!
Yea, bloopers were worth the wait!!
Great review.
Banana split. Vanilla ice cream, chocolate, strawberry, and pineapple sauce, split banana and cherry on top
I'll have to check them side by side. I have both. I got into a Woodinville Rye Barrel Pick last night. Dang easily the top one or two in my collection. You two are a kill. Cheers!.
Bloopers addition is great!
Very cool that you have almost 20k subscribers. Glad I got on in the beginning.
Appreciate you a ton Nathan! Cheers!
I love how Erin has gradually price accumulated over the past year. Noticed her not hating $50+ bottles lately
I have noticed that too. I guess we are all adjusting to the higher prices on everything,
I think the weekly shock at the grocery store for basic food needs has desensitized us to the cost of everything right now. 😅
Printing more money than god can imagine has that effect on prices and peoples price tolerance.
Vanilla all the way. Couldn't agree more.
you guys are great..love the channel..erin brings it
Welcome to the family! 😆 I’m a rye guy! I have not had Pikesville though so I’ll have to check it out.
Y’all need to get black glens! I am thinking of getting some because I find I can be biased based on a darker color, even though I know that doesn’t always mean the darker one is better. It’s just how our brains have been trained.
Just bought 6 bottles of Pikesville. Love the stuff
Just tried the pikesville tonight, I am a big fan. Solid bottle for $45
My cousin was a Crown Royal fan, but Now he has gone to Woodford Double Oak. Going to the horse races in Hot Springs end of March for a family reunion... I plan to take him to try Old Forester 1910 to try....and compare..... I just now found Rusell's reserve Rhy.... Really Really impressed.
I have both of these and enjoy both of them. I am about as “rye guy” as Josh but I am working on it. Still enjoy bourbons much more. Cheers! Keep up the good work, always enjoyable.
What a good head to head by the way going off what I remember couldn't agree more I'm going to have to side by side these today. Cheers!
I actually have that Jock Jams CD. I thought it was volume 2. Succession priceless.
Love it when Erin makes Josh blush ! 😄
And snort, lol!
Both are solid choices for sure but personally I prefer Sagamore cask strength rye
Erin is spot on regarding banana splits! Love this format guys!
I’ve only had a banana split with chocolate, vanilla and strawberry. And oh ya love both of those ryes.
I must say once again that Josh and Erin are professional whiskey tasters.... Hands down.... Love you two ❤️🙏
😂😂 Next up, professional banana split tasters!
Oh Erin, the 'tastes like burning' is from Simpsons not South Park. Ralph Wiggins during the spoof of Lord of the Flies, after eating berries on the island. {yes, I watched too much Simpsons back in the day}.
This was a very interesting one for me, since I can get both and keep being on the fence for the Pikesville. Going to grab one next time I'm over at the FWGS. Great video and even better bloopers!
Vanilla bean with a scoop of peanut butter and a bit of milk poured over.. it’s the way
Erin is right about the ice cream, variety is the spice of life. Josh sounds like he prefers plain white toast, no butter, just dry white toast 😂
She’s absolutely right about b splits
Erin is correct on the ice cream 100%
I’ve only ever had a banana split with vanilla ice cream. But after this episode and the comments I’m definitely going to try the “classic” variety!
Not going to apologize, this comment is going to be long simply because I respect S&W and I want to give feedback on (finally) two pours you compared and I have them as well. In short - Pikesville wins. The Details:
My Pikesville is $50 and Rare Breed is $58, which I consider comparable. Both have very appealing appearances (they both look good in the bar). Pikesville is 110 proof, Rare Breed is 112.2 proof. I'm using standard Glencairn glasses. And here we go...
Both have a similar appearance but glass 2 is a slightly deeper copper color.
Nose:
#1 is slightly sweet, has a little alcohol burn, and a little spice. Thumbs up.
#2 is missing the alcohol burn of #1, it's sweet but not as spicy. This results with a just OK.
#2 nose is good but the #1 nose is more complex to me.
Based on the nose I'd say #1 is a lot proofier...more proofier...stronger than #2.
Palette:
#1 First impression is dry, like what I get with Woodford Double Oaked. Spicy but lacking the sweet from the nose...wait, there's a little sweetness on the back of the palette. And a slight pepper character? Initial rating - just OK.
#2 A little dry (not like 1), I get some sweet and surprisingly, the lack of spice on the nose is on the palette. And man, that is oily. Really coats the tongue and leaves a nice after taste. Thumbs up.
Little bit left over so let's mix them at a 1 to 1 ratio - Ummm...no, didn't like that...
Availability:
Rare Breed rye(glass 1) is $58 where you can find it. Pikesville(Glass 2) is $50. Rare Breed rye is more available in my market but if you know where to look you can find Pikesville. Thumbs up to Rare Breed, just OK to Pikesville.
End result - Rare Breed rye is a solid rye. Pikesville beats it out if you can get it.
Solid answer for me - Pikesville beats Rare Breed Rye.
Love it! And sounds like your experience across the board tracked with our own which is always pretty cool. Cheers and thanks for sipping along with us on this one!
@@stuffandwhiskey I was stoked about this video but it took me a few days to be able to sit down and do the comparison. Honestly, I wrote up my comparison before watching your video just to stay unbiased. I had both pours I just felt really engaged with this video because I could relate my experience with yours (you tasting professionals). This video was one of the best (for me) and is a great example of why I love your channel!!!
Hey Guys, love all of your content! I seem to have a similar profile, and like a lot of your favorites. One question...Where is your list of ratings that you've tasted? I cant seem to find it. I would love to see your top 20 for instance. Thanks, and cheers!
Not sure if anyone has compiled a public list. We do keep up a list over on our Patreon community. Palate alignment is key. We appreciate you watching!
Banana splits are fantastic. Yes, Vanilla, Chocolate, and Strawberry are covered in chocolate syrup with bananas and whipped cream. As far as Rye Whiskey, not as good as the ice cream to me.
If you do three scoops of vanilla then you do three different flavors of drizzle on top. One chocolate, one strawberry, one caramel or marshmallow or something.
Banana split for me consist of vanilla ice cream chocolate and peanut butter sauce. Put a cherry and a little bit of whipped cream
Simpson’s, not South Park. But awesome reference nonetheless
Josh is all serious and Erin is making “croissant” jokes 😂😂😂
😂😂
Three flavors of ice cream and toppings
I'd like to see Knob Creek Single Barrel Rye up against Pikesville (or both Pikesville and Rare Breed Ryes).
We can make that happen!
Erin is right about banana split! Strawberry, chocolate, and vanilla ice cream!
Secession is withdrawing from the nation. Succession is in sequence.
This highlights how important enunciation is.
It depends on where you go for banana splits. If you go to dairy queen you get vanilla ice with strawberry, hot fudge, and pineapple. Culver's you get the same except they sub hot caramel for pineapple. Some specialty stores will go chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla. So you are both right lol.
Females knowing whiskey is all a man needs ! Dream come true.
Original banana split is the three types of ice cream. I believe places started doing them with vanilla ice cream only and the three different sauces because it was cheaper to only carry 1 type of ice cream.
I need to get my hands on the Pikesville, heard really good things!
Pikesville in my area is 37! I was shocked to hear 50
You're among the few where it's that cheap and that available. $50 here and in most markets, and it seems many markets haven't had it in a LONG time (ours included, been over a year since we've seen a bottle). It's a buy all day at $37!
You can say "mature" either way. I'm a bourbon drinker through and through but wanted to dip my toes into rye. After asking around, I decided to grab a bottle of Pikesville for 47 dollars. It's getting harder to find here in MA so I took a chance. I haven't tried it yet but I'm excited about it! This review just emphasized what folks were telling me when pointing me in the direction of Pikesville. Plus, I love HH products. Thanks for doing this. Cheers!
Cheers Michele! Hope you enjoy the Pikesville!
You forgot the pineapple sauce is what goes on the vanilla.
Also I almost spit my coffee out when you all said “suck session” omg, oh I’m dying right now, 😂.
😂 😂
Both are barely legal rye. I get a stronger mint taste with the RB and thicker mouth feel with the Pikesville. I prefer Pikesville overall. Great review!
Worked at Dairy Queen back in high school and Erin has the banana split recipe correct
Great proof and price compare blind.
Erin is right, but it's Chocolate, Vanilla and Strawberry ice cream with strawberry and pineapple and hot fudge with a split banana on the sides.... Sounds so good right now!
Both pours are hitters!
Erin says, “you miss everything.” Josh has to process that for a minute before he got it, lol!
These are both very good, but I never realized that the Pikesville that high of a proof.( I’m bad at remembering to read the bottles)
josh as a fan of the Farrells ice cream parlors I am also an ice cream lover
I have around 100 bottles of bourbon in my collection, and the only rye I have is currently Old Forester Rye. I have been seeing reviews / comparisons of Pikesville, New Riff Rye, several Sagamore Spirits, Michter’s, etc. might need to add some ryes to my collection.
Sagamore PX Sherry is a nice sweet spicy rye! Sagamore double oak is really nice!
The banana split has the banana, vanilla ice cream and pineapple, strawberry and chocolate toppings
Banana Split...a scoop of chocolate, vanilla and strawberry. Truth
Erin is correct on the banana split.
You're never gonna win the banana split argument dude...or any other for that matter! 😁 Excellent review you two...
👍👍 for this video in suc cession 😂
Even before seeing the video, I have both bottles and for my flavor profile, Rare breed all the way. I bought the Pikesville some time ago and haven't finished the bottle because I didn't care for it. I bought a bottle of Rare Breed Rye a few weeks ago and had a taste test recently between the two. I will not buy another bottle of Pikesville. I will rebuy Rare Breed. One of my favorite 90 proof ryes is the Redwood Empire Emerald Giant rye.
Stick around for the suck session at the end, it has Erin reaching for the tissues. You two are so much fun to watch! (if you ask me to remove this comment, I will)
This comment is basically a PSA! One of the funnier channel moments in recent memory. Cheers John!
Comon Josh, have you not finally realized Erin is (always) right here on the split!
Banana splits are subjective. Some places use a suicide drink type method. They throw everything into the bowl with bananas and call it a banana split. It all comes down to personal preference. I like my banana split with three scoops of vanilla, bananas, caramel sauce, strawberries, and strawberry sauce. If I’m feeling saucy, I’ll ask for peanut butter sauce as well. This gives it more of an Elvis vibe if you know what I mean.
That sounds incredible!
Traditional banana split, as I knew them, was three flavors of ice cream. You win Erin.
That’s how it usually goes around here. 😂 Cheers Debby!
WHISKEY CHEERS 😎
Rossville union is the besy
Regarding ice cream.. banana splits are great when you’re at a diner and don’t have to do all that work. For me I take ice cream take off cover and dig in. Regarding the ryes I’m happy it’s a coin toss. Rare Breed Rye is so readily available in my area. Pikesville I haven’t seen in my area in 4 years.
Pikesville has been oddly absent from our market for a LONG time now as well.
"America".... That's funny right there..
Erin is correct. Banana split is 3 flavors of ice cream.
Dude sorry, Erin is correct with her Banana Split recipe.
I love both of these, but since I can get Pikesville for $40, it gets the edge for me from a value perspective.
Differences of opinions make for good horse racing. I cannot agree with y’all on this one. WT Rare Breed Rye is by far the best rye I’ve tried, and is a staple of my modest whiskey collection. But it’s a good video. Thanks for posting it.
100% agree! Would be pretty boring if we all agreed about everything. Cheers and thanks for watching!
Old math teacher here...50 + 65 = 115, not 105 😁
Haha! At the time we put the pair into the pool and entered it into the key it was $55 for the Rare Breed rye, but when I looked up prices while editing I noticed it’s now $65. I’m proud of myself for nailing $50 + $55 = $105 on the fly. Math is hard! 😂
Rare Breed Rye is a lemon honey bomb and very refreshing!
Pikesville for the win…. I just don’t see it for sale.
Josh you got pwnd my dude...i still luv u tho
theres only one way to have a banana split and its cvs with all the extra extras
All the flavors in a banana split.
3 flavors ice cream is 100% accurate
Actually, my comment below is probably skewed a bit more in favor of Rare Breed Rye because it's not been available that long.
You are wrong Josh, its Neapolitan all the way and a BS has chocolate, candied pineapple and Strawberry syrup toppings.
Candied pineapple!?
The last video was Latin and now French?! Erin you are so worldly. You need to school Josh on his intercontinental lexicon. 🧐👍
😂😂 true truth!
I actually like the rye better than rare breed bourbon.
I like caramel sauce on my banana split. 🍌🍨 😄
Pikesville is a barely legal rye so it's almost a high rye bourbon. I like it a lot but the Rare Breed is more of a rye drinkers rye. In my inventory spreadsheet I favor Rare Breed 8 to 3 over the last 4 years or so.
Lmao come on man bananas splits are where it's at. Erin you need to get him a banana split made the right way. It's the ultimate triple threat lol Three ice cream flavors three sauces toppings 3 toppings. Trifecta trifecta on trifecta.🤣
The ol’ triple trifecta!
So Rare Breed Rye is unchill filtered but the regular Rare Breed is Chill filtered??? If so I feel cheated. Lol.
Right!?
Pikesville is great but the Rare Breed is gross to my palate, gritty minerality
Love Rare Breed Rye, but I get dill notes from Pikesville 🤮
Neopolitan all the way!
Suck Session? Isn’t that a show on HBO?🤣🤣
Sounds more Showtime or Cinemax 😂
