In Texas: Found Alberta Premium $24.41 at Spec's today. I just finished the same Rossville 83 barrel version (blend of 95/5 an 51% ryes) that they reviewed so went looking for a replacement on Friday. Found a 2021 Total Wine single barrel cask strength store pick in Dallas - Plano North discounted to $37. This is low rye mash bill, very sweet and pretty, almost an exact copy of Mitcher's but better. Also found Spec's 2022 single barrel cask strengh marked down to $38 which appears to be 95/5 mashbill. Good but prefer the 51% or the blend.
Rossville got me into Rye Whiskey. I found it marked wrong at $20 and I loved it. A month later I had 10 bottles of Rye in my collection and it keeps growing. I like Bone Snapper rye a lot.
Once again you two showed why you are the best whiskey channel on UA-cam with this blind. I think I'll pick up a bottle of the Alberta Premium today. It's only $30 at a store by me. Thank and keep up the great work. Cheers...
It didn’t do well in my blind, was too hot and flavor couldn’t come out. I need to try one more time. Barrel Proof Ryes 1 Riverset 2 Sagamore Spirit 8 yr 3 Hard Truth 4 JD SBBP 5 Pikesville 6 New Riff SBBP BP Ryes II 1 Wild Turkey Rare Breed Rye 2 Old Overholt 10 yr 3 Alberta Premium
Old Ezra 7 Rye is another phenomenal bottle. Understand about not putting JDSBBP in because of it being single barrel but it’s still takes the crown for me.
I slipped into my local liquor store after watching this and they had Rossville Union barrel proof straight rye on sale for $49.99! Just had a sip and my god what a banger bottle! Thanks guys seriously good stuff! Thanks
I have recently gotten into ryes and Trenton is a big reason for that. Can't thank him enough. I was mainly a bourbon guy before that. I recently picked up the Bardstown Rye, Bhakta 1928, High West Rendezvous Rye, Dickel Leopold Bros Collab, Frey Ranch Rye, JD Single Barrel Barrel proof, Milam & Greene Port finish rye, New Riff malted rye, Redwood Empire Emerald Giant Cask Strength, Sagamore double Oak, and Still Austin cask strength rye. Before that I had only tried about 3 ryes compared to 80 or so bourbons. Can't thank him enough for getting me to expand my palate.
Well made (as usual) and entertaining without being stupid and frivolous (not naming names). Love it when you do Rye because that- and Scotch- is my wheelhouse.
The funny part is you guys recently always say, "I can't believe we're the same on this" but you guys let each other talk yourselves into each other's placements! I think it's for continuity when presenting the bottles at the end which is easier if you're the same but it's less interesting when I know if one pushes c, the other will be like well I was between a and c so yea I'll push c out.
@@Chase_AM KS, I’ve seen the regular in MO but both are non existent in KS. Buffalo Trace products are getting better but any special JD releases never make it or get snatched up by liquor store owners
Old Forester Rye is my favorite affordable rye . On the other hand, if you dont mind spending more for an amazing rye experience, Old Forester single barrel rye barrel proof is my go to. But it's hard to find, haha. Though im seeing it more and more these days at total wine.
Agree. The OF SBBS Rye was my gateway to ryes and I'm never going back! Up to 12 bottles on hand, thanks to Total Wine recently! They have been in the online store for several weeks now at 90$ as well, bought three there.
Just picked up 2 at Binny’s for $29.99 (usually $70). Cask strength just a different batch. Limited edition. 63.5%, 127 proof vs what they reviewed at 133. The guy at Binny’s said he is on his second bottle. Bob I am up in Wisconsin every month!!

I love the flavour profiles you guys give! I wish I could sip these whiskeys neat and get the same flavours, but being in the majority of Australians who just love their whiskeys mixed, I've found I can get those same flavours you do whilst being able to put the mixer flavour aside! Which is why I made my channel with videos mainly for Australians who love to mix their whiskeys but really for everyone who like to mix their whiskeys, I know you guys kind of see it as blasphemous mixing good whiskey especially bourbon but I love it 😆 keep up the great work guys❤
I get the awful "diesel" note on MOST cask strength ryes - but ONLY on the neck pour! Was the Willett recently opened, just curious? After pouring out a sample and letting it sit for a couple weeks, it always goes away completely! So if anyone ever gets a cask strength rye which smells like diesel - don't drain pour! Pour out a couple samples and let it sit in the bottle for a couple weeks. My theory is that those particular alcohol fumes are the lightest and evaporates pretty quickly once the bottle is opened. Great video! Out of your line-up, my favorite is Pikesville (except I don't have Willett and my Hard Truth is the 4 Caramel). I will always take sweet over complexity. I don't get any musty smell or notes in any of those bottles, so I'm wondering if there was possibly contamination from the glass or maybe the recent rain made the SLB basement a little musty? If you do this again, you might consider adding Old Overholt 114 at $20, I think it could bust some of the heavy hitters!
Excellent lineup. Only thing I have that's readily available I would maybe include is something from Middle West Spirits, just to see where it lands. Really enjoyed this one! 👍
Im so picking up AP next time I see it. Rossville store pick I recently grabbed was now validated for me. I thought something was wrong with my taste buds when I absolutely enjoyed it. Kept going and bought another. Great pour, and am excited to try the standard offering of the Rossville cask. Where was JD Rye? Allocated?
Even though it's a single barrel, would still like to see JDSBBP rye in a blind like this. Rare breed rye would be great to see too. I believe the Sagamore 8 year is roughly 112 proof so that might also be a good fit for a higher proof rye lineup
The wheel and Rebecca’s choice is fun but should be utilized once a month. An educated, curated blind by Kurt or Trenton is much more preferable. The fun of the curated selection is they’re usually whiskies we can purchase or a theme that has older releases matching up with something currently available. Keep up the great work. Happy to be a Patreon of SLB for a year now! **Updated** Just got to end. Alberta Premium CS has been on sale at local Binny’s for $29.99, guess I need to pick up a few bottles and follow Trenton’s lead.
Alberta Premium has always been a heavy favorite, but drinking a lot of New Riff SB recently. There is also Redwood Empire to consider. Great video: Richmondwhisky.
Fantastic video. I have the Hard Truth (store pick) and love it, after watching this I know what others are affordable and good to try. Love your channel, TonyB
I'm a Rye guy so my list is long. I have most of your picks and that's a solid line up. Most of the ryes on my top 10 list are hard to get bottles. Favorites are Barrel Seagrass, Driftless Glen, Dancing Goat LImousin, Cedar Ridge, Old Pepper, Old Potrero, and I am a huge fan of Old Ezra 7 Year. Cheers!
Great line up ! I was introduced to Alberta Premium by another Whiskey Tuber while we were out hunting here in So-Cal about a year ago. Since then I even traded an Eagle Rare for a second bottle. How funny/interesting would it be to redo this same exact line up. It would show how an "In the moment" rating can change day by day. Keep them coming guys ! Dana in So-Cal
My first would be Sagamore 8-year, but I'm not sure that qualifies as affordable. Second would be the Albera. I have six bottles sitting in my basement. Next would be the Willett. Well behind those other three would be that Hard Truth. I didn't care for it that much 🤷🏻♂️. I still haven't had the Rossville Union, though. Good blind.
Maybe people will stop saying how bad Canadian whiskey/rye is. For something excellent but very unusual, try Bearface. For a good well rounded rye, try Signal Hill cask strength.
Trenton.... what happened to you with Still Austin cast strength rye, you used to love it.... It's one of my go-to's .... I've started blending with american single malt, creating my own malted rye
Not shocked with Pikesville. Like you guys said, it's a gateway to the broader world of Ryes. It servers that purpose well, but as you get accustomed to more rye you're pallet expands and I think we see that showing here.
For future reference, mineral oil will work to get things unstuck from a glue trap. For a bird, their feathers need to be cleaned then also, as the oil is not good for them (think oil spill). And yes, Dawn dish detergent works well.
In the last month I've picked up these Ryes.. Sagamore double oaked and sherry, Jack Daniel cask, and knob Creek store cask. I've started to like rye whiskey
If you are doing another, consider including Bardstown origin, still austin cask, heaven hill grain glass, toss the jack in, whistlepig 10 small batch, and ezra
I love the show and appreciate all you have done with me for my whiskey journey and my whiskey experience. I want to see a bottom shelf blind. You buy the 10 cheapest bottom shelf whiskeys and blind 5 of them Monday. 5 on Wednesday. Then the top 5 on Friday. These can be canadian, American, Scotch, Irish, whiskeys. I love the videos of where Trenton and Kurt try the worst whiskeys.
I was waiting for the look on your faces when you realized Pikesville was in last, hilarious. We have Alberta Premium Cask Strength Rye Whisky at Binny's on sale for $29.99, normally $69.99. Running our right now to get a couple of bottles
that Alberta Premium Cask is SO good. For sure my winner as well. That knob creek 10 yr rye would have been a nice add and old overholdt cask as well. Elijah Craig toasted rye would have been a contender also
Trenton, you mentioned Single Malt being ahead of regular bourbon at this point in your journey. Have you or can you do a Single Malt intro series of several Single Malts? I'm extremely green in that category. Would love to know where to start.
I'm not sure what happened here,,, Kurt went hard with Trenton's tasting note action!!😮😂😂😂 What a Great blind that truly shows everyday creates a different mood and a wild ride!! Awesome Times Y'all!!👊💪🥃🥃
Trenton, you really need to track down a batch 4 (63.5%) or 5 (64.2%) Alberta Premium Cask Strength, they’re amazing. I hope you come across a batch 1 one day too (65.1%) as I think it is just slightly better still. Maybe one of the next batches will change that.
Couldn't disagree more. Have not liked anything out of there or Casey Jones for that matter. I live in Clarksville and see this stuff everywhere. Old Glory is the better juice in the area and I can't wait to see their lineup grow.
I have a willett small batch at 114 proof that is undefeated in blinds. It's beaten out jdsbbp rye, michters barrel strength rye, prideful goat, the senator, and midwinters
I'm a bourbon guy without much experience in rye, so this is going to be interesting. 🙂 I do like some rye, but I prefer bourbon. Trenton, listen to Kurt. I grew up with Kool-Aid, and it was good. 👍 5:33 Sagamore Spirit Cask Strength is one of the few ryes I've had, and I ❤❤❤ it. And Sagamore has, I think, the prettiest bottles in whisky. 14:41 And I also ❤❤❤ the Hard Truth Sweet Mash Rye. This one's good for bourbon drinkers too, since the rye characteristics don't slap you in the face. Even though I've only had two selections each from Sagamore Spirit and Hard Truth (regular and Cask Strength; Sweet Mash Rye and Sweet Mash Bourbon), I don't believe either distillery is capable of making anything other than good whisky.
I tend to struggle finding Ryes in my wheelhouse. I'll definitely give a few of these a try. PS Trenton's Orkin crawl space story was the most off the rails side bar to date. And that's saying something. 😂
I have only seen Pikesville in eastern Iowa; none of the others. I do like rye’s. I have 2 cask strength rye’s in my collection, the original JDSB and Steeple Ridge from Lonely Oak distillery here in Iowa. The latter is pretty good.
Pikesville is definitely a training wheels rye. It is solid and great rye for someone just getting into rye. But with more experience the higher rye mashbills give more rye character
This is great! Got turned onto the Alberta Premium because of you guys in the past and loved it. Will have to pick up a Roseville. The one I would love to see you add to compare, I love MGP 95/5 and the Stellum Black have been amazing for me especially the Fibonacci and Lone Cypress iterations of it.
I have 5 JD SBBP Ryes and they are all very different. The variance on them is crazy and definitely makes it hard for blinds. However they’re all excellent and a great buy for around $70
Solid competition in that lineup! I really enjoy the Sagamore rye’s and the Alberta Premium I thought started tasting to much Canadian Whiskey. My Willet is just okay. I like the Pikesville quite a bit. I just bought the Rossville Union(63.00) today and I’ll be having it tonight. Cheers!

Please include tattersail 95% rye barrel proof if you can grab it. It is a absolute favorite.
My favorite is catoctin cask strength rye. Love it. If you can get the one that aged in maple syrup barrels then you are in heaven.
love OJ after some crest......
Im 6-6, I don't do crawl spaces either..........
I don't do crawl spaces either. Then again, I'm not an exterminator.
I was waiting for the look on your faces when you realized Pikesville was in last, hilarious. We have Alberta Premium Cask Strength Rye Whisky at Binny's on sale for $29.99, normally $69.99. Running our right now to get a couple of bottles
The Prideful Goat Rye is really nice!
King's Ryeconic for me! 115 proof and just a wonderful complex pour. Michters, Baby Sazerac and Pikesville are other go-tos
What I learned in this episode: Trenton just throws random trash out in his yard.. shaking my head.. Also the best BP Rye is the JD SBBS Rye
Local stores here had the Alberta Premium Cask Strength on clearance for $29.99, picked up several bottles has I really like it.
Gotta include Old Soul in your next rye lineup. Extremely underrated!!!
that Alberta Premium Cask is SO good.
Great show. Would like to have seen Old Overholt 10 year cask strength rye in the blind. 🥃👌🏼
Hard Truth does amazing things and I’m not surprised at all the Canadian rye came out on top. Good stuff
It’s a single barrel and a local craft distillery. MB Rolland single barrel cask strength rye. All of them I’ve had have been amazing
Couldn't disagree more. Have not liked anything out of there or Casey Jones for that matter. I live in Clarksville and see this stuff everywhere. Old Glory is the better juice in the area and I can't wait to see their lineup grow.
Another awesome blind! Still Austin Cask Strength Rye, Smooth Ambler Cask Strength Rye, Stellum Cask Strength Rye, Pinhook Barrel Strength Rye (Teal Wax), and James E. Pepper 1776 Straight Rye Barrel Proof.
I have a willett small batch at 114 proof that is undefeated in blinds. It's beaten out jdsbbp rye, michters barrel strength rye, prideful goat, the senator, and midwinters
I enjoy baby Saz, JD, Knob Creek 10 yr rye and SiB 115 proof rye. I had a Sagamore pick that was amazing.
Ah yes this smells like dead bird on a glue trap in the driveway. Hints of Orkin. I love that every glass has a story lol😂
Enjoyable channel for sure. I get the "I can't drink anymore" on this labor day holiday weekend 😂
Get Redwood Empire in there!
I'm a bourbon guy without much experience in rye, so this is going to be interesting. 🙂 I do like some rye, but I prefer bourbon.
Trenton, listen to Kurt. I grew up with Kool-Aid, and it was good. 👍
5:33 Sagamore Spirit Cask Strength is one of the few ryes I've had, and I ❤❤❤ it.
Old Elk Straight Rye is superb-as I find all of Old Elk products. Higher cost than the 6 you tested, however.
Trenton, we need that overhead camera you've been promising us!
I tend to struggle finding Ryes in my wheelhouse. I'll definitely give a few of these a try.
PS Trenton's Orkin crawl space story was the most off the rails side bar to date. And that's saying something. 😂
Dad's Hat Cask Strength Rye is 🔥🔥🔥
I have only seen Pikesville in eastern Iowa; none of the others. I do like rye’s. I have 2 cask strength rye’s in my collection, the original JDSB and Steeple Ridge from Lonely Oak distillery here in Iowa. The latter is pretty good.
Wow, Kurt stealing Trenton's notes right out of the gate "this smells like Kool-Aid..." hahaha, awesome.
When I think rye, I think high west. Trenton what's your opinion on double rye and rendezvous?
Proud Albertan Here!
Me as well. It is funny that alberta premium CS is on sale in Chicago for $30. The best I have seen in Alberta is $50. 😅
Favorites are Rossville and James Pepper.
I have 5 JD SBBP Ryes and they are all very different. The variance on them is crazy and definitely makes it hard for blinds. However they’re all excellent and a great buy for around $70
Great stuff again. Hope to see y'all tonight 🥃🇺🇲
Cheers!
Mind blowing. Great blind though!
Nelson Brothers Rye is legit super smooth
Do a wilderness trail rye. Killer ryes and at the low rye content I think you both will love it
Alberta Premium CS is great. Try adding a bit of ruby port about 10 parts rye to 1 part port. Midwinters Night Dram?
That Walleye Run rye is superb. I honestly don't know if you can find it very far from New Holland, though.
Nice review. I’m a fan of Rossville for sure. I’ve not seen Alberta but I will be on the lookout.
Great show . Did you or do you have plans of doing a all Pennsylvania Rye tasting?
I’m sticking to Basil Hayden dark rye blended with Alberta rye and a hint of port. 80 proof very drinkable. ✌️
Rossville BP is hard to beat. Coalition BP Rye is my top though!
I love Roseville Union rye myself. Please try Corbin Cash rye. The 1917 rye or any single barrel. It would beat all of those ryes.
