Yeah, he also touches upon the stuff that _really_ matters, like for example the importance of learning half flips when trying to learn kickflips, instead of landing them one foot only. This is easily the biggest tip to actually coming close to landing a kickflip IMHO. I can flick and rotate the board whilst jumping and flicking up, but still not stay above the board. This way I'd never come close to landing a kickflip, so this 'practice step' encouraged by other channels is literally pointless. I wish people would emphasize more how a kickflip is basically an ollie with slightly different front foot placement only. The rest is pretty much literally the same.
ah, sounds to me like you aren't dragging up the board properly If you don't drag up the board right, the board will do what it wants. In this case it will totally go behind you. To fix this, you *MUST* make sure that when you slide up the board, you *NEVER* have your front foot leave the board. Your front foot must stay in contact with the skateboard throughout the *entire* drag up the board. Do not simply just kick the board and pray for a land, you need that proper drag in there to give you a nice heelflip.
I know a bit late but what helps is to lean back before jumping up. You don't want to jump into the direction the board goes, but with this you'll push the board in front of you, where it should be. That thing connected with the advice of slowmomike should help you to get a good heelflip :)
@@heinzmustermann8416 Interesting point about 'not jumping the direction the board goes', because that's basically what a beginner pop shove it is like. You jump forward to get back on the board. And honestly my ollies are a lot like jumping forward (as in, nose side). Recently I also had the best kickflip attempt so far by doing basically an ollie, jumping nose side, dragging my foot up and with the front foot being half on the board it rotated the board already. It does half flips easily and with a bit more effort it does a full kickflip rotation. I think people underestimate how much of a true ollie is within tricks like the kickflip and heelflip tricks. Jumping front foot side during a kickflip for me is also the absolute easiest way of staying above the board at all times. Can't do it leaning any other way.
This is a really helpful tutorial. This guy gets into that little things and tells you common problems and tells you how to fix them. Thank you so much, some of these tips really helped
So after many hours I landed my first ever heelflip. You're video helped me soo much. The only real problem I had with doing it was landing the board slightest behind me. How I fixed it was leaning back a little bit more then you usually would with ollies while in the air which made me jump straight up. Thanks so much mike
Started skating about 6 months ago, been trying heelflips for about 3months now, and this video helped a lot, it's great that you give the different variations for different foot positions, i find people are too stubborn and need to be shown that you can try anything, as long as it works! seriously though, went out after watching this, and straight away, i was picking up more of a technique and managed to land some, thanks a bunch mate!
After a few painful months I finally landed my heelflips. Yesterday I landed my first double heel. Thank you for the help especially tucking my legs after the pop and flick. Feels really good to land them. =)
+ joshua molnar What you should do is first make sure that you have the necessary height to do the heelflip (you should be able to ollie at least 8 inches to a foot). If you can already do that and you still have trouble, you just have a technique problem. You want to make sure that with your front foot, you drag up the board using the *side* of you foot, you maintain contact with the board as you drag up the board, and then you flick *outwards* (not up, not down, go *out*). This is all pretty much from the video, so just make sure that your front foot technique is proper.
I had blacklisted Heel flips and started learning Kick flips just cause of how responsive there are to the toe flick, but I have to say all your vids are very detailed and I enjoy watching. I was wondering why I wasn't subscribed to your channel. lol THANK YOU. I WILL ATTEMPT HEELFLIPS THIS WEEKEND. PS: Anyone see that squirrel 04:25 ? HAHAH!

i watched this video and went out and started trying to land on the back of the board. and then i tried heelflips and i landed 2 of them. Thank You so much for the guide!
reading just right now, after skated today. but even after I watched 10 thousands of videos, your's improved my brain more than any other. ty mate, I will keep on my brain to tucking my front foot like doing a cannonball. I catch every flip with my backfoot :D I ll type to you again and show a video when I do the heelflip :) ty
been skating almost 2 years and still can't heelflip. Can never find a good quality heelflip tut. This one actually helped though. Your tre flip tutorial helped me alot too! Gonna go try these heelflips out now :p wish me luck!
Mike, thanks a lot for the video... it helped immensely. I was able to land a clean heelflip within a few days! I subscribed and I'll definitely be back to watch more tutorials once I feel confident to learn more tricks. Peace.
+ XXWilc0XX (I can't reply to you directly so you won't see a notification of this reply) I would recommend making sure that when you flick the board and all of that, that once you tuck your legs into your body, make sure that your feet are *hovering over the board* as the board rotates. Like your feet are perfectly over the board, that way when you come in for the land, you'll land clean
That’s interesting, I watched a trick tip video recently where they instructed us to flick with our toes. I tried this and it seemed to help a bit. I guess you’d have to get your foot on top of the board a little more do you can dip your toe down to make contact with the board. But that seems to help me. Most ppl probably flick with their heel though. I’m curious how everyone and how pros do it. Great video, sir.
This helped a lot my problem was I wasn't tucking you were the first video out of 10 I watched that told me to tuck. Thanks I subscribed to your Channel. Are you a pro skater?
+ Daniel Gibbon (I cannot reply to you directly, so if you would like direct notifications from me, check your youtube setting so that you can receive them in the future) Check out how you drag up the board and compare your dragging technique with mine at 3:15 of this video. Make sure that you angle your foot so that the side of your foot is in contact with the board as you drag up the board (like an ollie). You will be dragging up at an angle so that you hit the side of the nose (the toe-side part of the nose as you see in the video); remain in contact with the board as you drag up the board and flick *outwards*. Not up, not down, go _outwards_. Dragging and flicking properly is *super* important when it comes to getting the rotation. Hope that helps; all of this is said in the video so putting this in words is a little tricky for me.
Thanks for the advice, I couldn't get my back foot onto my board because of that exact reason in the video and it was confusing but now I fully understand so Ima go skate now and I'll come back and leave a comment if I do land one today! :D
+ dayton taylor (I can't reply to you directly, check your youtube settings so that I could reply to you if you wish to have notifications from me in the future) The guy below you had the same problem, here's a copy/paste of what I said to him: It sounds to me like you aren't dragging up the board properly If you don't drag up the board right, the board will do what it wants. yeah thanks i think i have figured it out now as long as i keep my weight in the right place and jump up and practice landing half flips i then almost accidently land full heelflips. thanks, keep making videos :)
problems with board landing behind you? focus very hard on centering your weight and not leaning forward at all. I actually put little more weight on my backfoot and the keeps the board under me to land on. thanks for the videos. Lots of great tips on this channel.
It's very important that you place your backfoot in the pocket between the tail and middle of board, and really just remember to force your back foot to hold the board in front of you, and then jump, so you don't land to early. Hope this will help!
+ lorenzo baso ricci (I can't reply to you directly, if you want to have direct notifications from me you should check your youtube settings about that) Are you planting your feet by any chance? Is there ever a time where one of your feet is below the board while you do the trick? If so, that means you aren't tucking correctly. If this is your problem I can go a little more in depth about tucking if you need me to, but all of what I will say will be directly from the video after 4:08 I believe.
+ TheSkateboardboy15 (I can't reply to you directly, so you may need to change your youtube setting so that if I do in the future, you should get a notification about it) Your main problem you have is simply not being comfortable with performing the heelflip. Flicking out in a different direction just messes you up because you aren't used to doing that. So that's where practice comes involved, just practice the heelflip a lot and then the dragging part of the heelflip will become comfortable. I would put a lot of focus on how you drag up the board; possibly to the point where you don't care about landing it, just making sure you have the technique so that you are able to rotate and *then* focus on trying to land it. Also the 'rocketing' part of your post is telling me that you aren't flicking outward, you are flicking too much up. Remember to flick perfectly *outwards* and away when you do this trick; never up and never down. Always flick out.
Thank you bruh this has been a tough trick for me i can kick but never heel as soon as i saw this i tried it and stuck it first try .. Thank you bruh for this im subscribing
You're probably flicking down, try to flick it up the board and out. I had the same problem. Just flick straight up and out and pull you legs up for a higher jump:)
+ Eduardo Yarza ; I'm not able to reply to you directly so you may want to you check your youtube settings about that problem If you are ever landing in front of the board, that tells me that you aren't dragging the board up properly. When you drag up the board, it allows the board to stay under you. If you don't drag up the board, the board will not stay with you and end up going behind you. Do NOT jump back, jump *straight up* like all of the tricks you do. You want to have better dragging/sliding up the board technique instead.
Whenever I tried doing a heelflip it would flip perfectly but I would land only with my front foot every single time without any problems and occasionally if I got lucky I would land it. I watched this video, went out skating and landed 2 clean heel flips in a row. It could've been 3 but the third one I did had a little bit of toe drag. Literally right after the third heelflip though, I could no longer flip it every time. When I did flip it, I couldn't even get close to landing it with at least my front foot. It either doesn't flip all the way or it sorta does an inward heel I think it's called. It was weird cause usually if I do a basic trick, I will only forget it if I don't skate for a long time, this one was immediate.
Hey thanks for the help you gave me with my heelflips! I have them on lock, I am having trouble with getting them higher. I have tried to pop higher and slide more up the board near the nose instead of the corner. If you can help that would be awesome!
This helped me a lot yo I could flick it but I couldn't get my back foot on it and now I understand what to do with my back foot thanks a lot I landed it a lot after a few times
I had bad heelflips for a while but really good kickflips so I watched this and it corrected my heelflips a bit so they aren't like a rocket thanks for that. Now i'm working on varial heels my only 2 problems I consistently run into are having the board go way behind me(towards the heelside edge of the board) and only doing half of a flip but getting the full rotation. Doing you know how to fix those problems? The main one that annoys me is only getting half of a flip I can usually land on the board but upside down. I have landed this trick a couple times before though i'm not sure what I did.
Great to hear that your heelflips are getting better! Out of curiosity, how consistent are they? Also, are your fs shoves consistent as well? I just wanna make sure you got the fundamentals down before I give you advice, as my advice would be worthless if you don't have those two tricks under your belt.
I did nothing but heelflips for a couple days and now they are 10/10 my front shoves are about 7/10 or 8/10. I have varial heels now and they came super easy once I landed that first one clean. Now i'm worried about lasers. I can do them on a small board but I skate 8.25 so its nearly impossible for me idk why. The way I think about it is i shove my backfoot foward as hard as I can like a kick and i try to focus on connecting with the board and flicking out at a 45 degree angle. My main problem is landed with the board 270 or sometimes it will fly like a mile behind me(heelside) When i try it moving it sometimes gets left behind but im getting better about that.
Yeah reg lasers are a weird one for me too. I'm more of a nollie/switch laser type of guy, I also skate an 8.25 as well (all of my street boards are). So I may not be the _best_ person to take advice from, so I guess I'll treat it as a switch laser tip. One thing that would really help for you would be to try out fakie lasers; I learned my switch ones by doing nollie ones a lot. Things in nollie/fakie tend to flip/rotate a lot better than reg/switch, so that can give you some nice practice. I also find that twisting my back leg along with kicking it like an fs shove really helps with the rotation. By "twisting my back leg" I end up simply just pivoting my foot so that my ankle doesn't move, but my whole foot does. So add that on top of your fs shove to get a good rotation.
loved your tip that you say "it could turn into a habbit". I got some kind of that problem. after flicking can't tuck my leg to my body. awesome flicks I solved in 4 days but still cant tuck my front foot to my leg. timing is a real problem.any advices for tucking my front foot ? for example I always catch it with my back foot but front foot is always at the ground:( I have same problem for kickflip too. I guess it turned into a habbit for me. and cant find any solution. pls help
i always messed it up, when i land primo and do it again i lossed it and i also always land it with my front foot, and my back foot is near to the board, great tutorial man! ;)
like I said dude, you need more height you need to buy more time in the air you don't want to be searching for shortcuts because they will either: a) not work and be a complete waste of time, when you could've spent that time getting them the proper way b) hurt you hard in the long run Take it really easy with the progression dude, it's no rush, keep it easy, keep skateboarding fun and not about a rush to learn tricks
hey bro this is awesome.just by one tip you gave me i improved much.My front foot is getting closer to the board every single time i heelflip which is great! Can you just throw a couple tips to me
Hey Mike, i have a problem with my heelflips, i land them with my two feet on the board, but i always catch them with my front foot. i know you have to catch them with your back foot, but does it matter when you catch them with your front foot? And how can i fix this? Thanks

Your main problem you have is simply not being comfortable with performing the heelflip. If you are ever landing in front of the board, that tells me that you aren't dragging the board up properly.
Im not sure if im centering my weight properly but i tried and landed some clean ones! How do you center your weight?
This helped me a lot yo I could flick it but I couldn't get my back foot on it and now I understand what to do with my back foot thanks a lot I landed it a lot after a few times
Best tutorial out there!
how do I get them higher off the ground everytime i flick it is almost rotates but it hits the ground because it's too low
Out of curiosity, how high are your ollies?
Do you find your heeflips to be a lot lower than your ollies?
I guess it turned into a habbit for me. and cant find any solution. pls help
I actually landed my frist heelflip today thanks to you! Thanks man :)

thanks ill try, Ur right some times i put a lot in the flick and i start doing doubles
thanks bro u have so much reason i landed the heelflip today 10 times so much clean!
is it better to have rough or sft grip tape for heelflips?high or low trucks? big or small wheels?
i know you probably will at some point but when will you be doing frontside 180s or 180s or bigger rotations in general?
i always messed it up, when i land primo and do it again i lossed it and i also always land it with my front foot, and my back foot is near to the board, great tutorial man! ;)
Thanks man! Just keep practicing and you'll get it! Everyone starts somewhere with any trick haha
i already land it :D
That's great dude! Congrats on getting it!
you described every problem i have had :) thanks for this
Awesome!
Glad you think it's helpful =]
Finally landed it today Mike, in a game of skate :)
It seems like i always learn tricks in SKATE :P
thanks i land them 9/10 times now helped a lot!!!!
ok so is there any way to flip them faster
like I said dude, you need more height
you need to buy more time in the air
you don't want to be searching for shortcuts because they will either:
a) not work and be a complete waste of time, when you could've spent that time getting them the proper way
b) hurt you hard in the long run
Take it really easy with the progression dude, it's no rush, keep it easy, keep skateboarding fun and not about a rush to learn tricks
Thanks so much man, helped alot. Subscribed :)
hey bro this is awesome.just by one tip you gave me i improved much.My front foot is getting closer to the board every single time i heelflip which is great! Can you just throw a couple tips to me
Hey Mike,
i have a problem with my heelflips, i land them with my two feet on the board, but i always catch them with my front foot.
i know you have to catch them with your back foot, but does it matter when you catch them with your front foot? And how can i fix this?
Thanks
do you have tips on stopping heelflips from tweaking forward (toeside)?
Thanks im going to try Landing half heel flips this might help I think I will
This man gives major early 2000s vibe
