That love of music and especially playing it is slipping away day by day for me. I’m 43 and have been playing guitar for 30 years and drums for 33 years. I have the same taste of music that you have as well as bands that I’m a fan of (Big Deicide fan). All of a sudden out of nowhere I started getting bad migraines/cluster headaches last month. I have them every single day with no break. I went to the hospital and had a CT Scan which came back normal. I don’t have a history of migraines either. All the migraine medicines that people are normally subscribed do nothing at all. I’ve took the root of trying Psilocybin micro dosing. THC, etc which nothing is working. I’m not going to give up trying to find out what’s causing this to all of a sudden start happening. I can handle sporadic migraines but not every single day with no end in sight. Things that I love so much are slipping away. This isn’t one of those situations where a person can just suck it up, be a man, and don’t let it bother you. It’s very debilitating. I love your outlook on things. Especially when you are like “Don’t sit around and watch UA-cam all day!” Basically saying stop wasting time always watching what everyone else is creating and create something awesome yourself. I’m not expecting pity or some kind of magic answer to my situation. I just wanted to share my situation with someone with an open mind. I don’t know you personally but from what I’ve gathered through watching and listening to you that you have a very respectable original head on your shoulders. You create, play, and share your music for all the right reasons. The way you get so pumped up after creating an awesome guitar riff gives other people the drive to create and share as well. Thank you for sharing parts of your musical odyssey with us.

@@bultronlagore4932 Thank you for sharing your story and all the kind words. I'm so sorry to hear about what you've been going through. I'm not sure what tests you've done already but I randomly got some awful chronic migraines out of nowhere several years ago and nothing was working until I finally got in to see a neurologist who thought I might have long-term medication overuse headaches. Which was the culprit as I had been taking painkillers quite consistently for my general stomach issues, cramps, and back pain for many, many years. He got me on some sort of medication to reset my brain chemistry and it helped sooooo much. I have no idea what you're going through but just wanted to share that in case it's something the doctors haven't looked into yet. I truly hope you find some relief asap!! Good luck 🖤

I have an appointment with a Neurologist but it’s not for another month. I’m so glad you got your migraine issue solved. Something tells me the introduction to certain technologies may be the culprit for most.

@@ClainesWorld found out today after an MRI with Dye injection Contrast that the reason I’m having the migraines everyday is due to Spinal fluid leakage from the back surgery I had last month. I’m actually very happy about this because now I know the trigger. I’m already scheduled for repair surgery next Wednesday so hopefully when I awake from the surgeries anesthesia I will also be awaking from a nightmare finally. I really resonate with the closing message of this video. People really need to LISTEN TO THEIR BODIES. My mom is in chronic pain and absolutely will not stop doing stuff that causes her pain. Her mindset is so focused on productivity that it's at the expense of her health and, as much as I try to tell her to rest, she just refuses to listen. I'm happy to see that you're making better choices for your health and not letting your inner demons own you. Mad respect to you o7

I had tendinitis in my arm near my elbow (which sounds like something similar to yours) when I was 16 because I was playing a ton of guitar and i was using my whole arm for tremolo picking. It actually forced me to learn the correct technique because using *any* amount of tension in my arm would result in a piercing pain, so it acted as a guide to show me the way to "effortless" tremolo picking, which I've used ever since (if anyone's interested, I have a couple of videos on my channel). Thankfully, I was younger and I think that helped out with the recovery since it only lasted for a couple of weeks as far as I can remember.

I’ve been dealing with Tendinitis for 4 months now, and this video has been inspiring for me! I’m one of the guitar players in my band, and my bandmates have missed me. I’ve been listening to my body and not pushing anything in order to heal as best as I can. Music has been the biggest part of my life for over 12 years now, and it’s been hard not to play, write, or practice guitar. I’m finally starting to heal thanks to a cortisone shot I had injected recently, but I can’t play for hours on end like I used to, because I can feel my body telling me, “You better stop or you’re gonna go right back to square one” around the 45 minute mark. Thank you for telling your story, Claire. I really needed this video, and I hope that this reaches more people in our same position.

Been and am still partly in a similar situation. 2,5 years of combined tendinitis, golfer's elbow and probably something else. The only thing that truly helped me was rest and exercises. As yourself I used to be a very stressed and anxious person throughout my life and I realized that one of the key components of truly healing physically is to have a clean psyche, which is something not that many people pay attention to in this current, western world. What really helped me was a spiritual cleansing with meditation and letting go of all stress/tension inducing beliefs. Only then I started realizing that when my body doesn't tense up instinctually, the tendons can actually rest.
Stressed mind and soul produce so much unconscious tension that to be finally relieved of this for the first time in life, gives a feeling similar to Plato's cave.
Hope you find this information, psychedelics are also a good place to start restructuring your psyche if you keep an open mind
I wish you all the best on your journey toward healing

Not tendinitis, but for years I struggled with Carpal Tunnel on my fretting hand and it absolutely wrecked me mentally (and of course physically. It also prevented things in my normally active lifestyle) and my heart goes out to any musician dealing with anything that gets in the way of their playing and passion. I've since had surgery which took care of about 80% of it, but the silver lining was I had to go back to the woodshed and fix my technique to be as easy on my fingers and hands as possible.

It was way back in 1992, so I forgot his name, but he had to retire early from terrible pain in his hands. Acupuncture (which my Taiwanese neighbour provided) gave him temporary relief - enough to have his demonstrations filmed. That was back in Cape Town, South Africa, so I will ask my parents for details, if they remember better than me.

I really appreciate this video, as someone that was having back pains for the past 10 years or so I only recently got correctly diagnosed on what was actually wrong with my back. that being spinal stenosis and degenerative disc disease. I always loved playing really weighty guitars and as that went on it made my back worse. I've been really depressed these past few years because I would play for about 20-30 minutes and my back would be howling so it got to the point where I sold my guitars because I just felt so bad that I couldn't play them. looking into buying super light guitars since my back is getting better now with steroid injections in my back about 4 times a year and doing exercises. I never wanted to quit but I was doing what you did and played through the pain until I couldn't handle it anymore.
thank you for this video and I hope that you get better 💜

I’ve had/have both tendinitis in my wrist and tennis elbow from playing since I was 19(I’m well into my 30’s now). What helped and continues to help me keep on playing is lifting weights. Specifically with compound movements such as barbell rows; it doesn’t stress the pain points because it includes and builds supporting muscles. Pair this with deep message therapy in said pain points(with proper rest) and it becomes much more manageable(almost gone in my case).

5 months late to this one, but fuckit. This is so much like my experience. I'm also in my 30s and had severe tendinitis in my picking arm. It was absolutely crushing physically and mentally because I so badly wanted to play but couldn't. Doctors were a total waste of time. Eventually I decided to figure it out for myself. 3 things combined have almost completely eliminated it within a year. Lifting weights, deep tissue massage and altering my picking technique. A healthy diet really helps too.

Second this, compression sleeves and even a sweat-band (or both) can help massively, also helps you to stay relaxed and helps to keep you in touch with the use of muscles/gives you more control. Haven't been back into guitar yet, but it can help massively with pain like that, including joint pain and other types/locations, even in day-to-day stuff or anything strenuous, and I'd imagine make it more likely that you're going to have minimal pain when you do play (as you're not straining it at other times).

    • @dwaggs01
      @dwaggs01 Рік тому +2

@@necroticpoison exactly, it definitely helps get rid of unnecessary muscle work. I use a elbow compression sleeve, and it does wonders, it makes me use my wrist as opposed to my whole arm, which greatly extends how long i can play before any serious pain.

    Hey Claine,
I'm from Van too! Hope to see you guys in person one day :)
I've had this exact issue and after many many months if not years trying to fix it, finally one major change that helped me was that - I know it sounds so random/irrelevant - I stopped eating peanut butter and any and all vegetable oils.
Turns out these two create a massive chemical imbalance in your body that damages your joints over time + cause/intensify inflammation! Specially if you already have a not-so-ideal posture/habit. Our body has an amazing ability to heal itself when we sleep. If the healing is interrupted, it starts to pile up and becomes a chronic issue.
Give it a try, I'm sure you will see a very noticeable improvement in a short amount of time.
    Let the METAL flow.. 🤘

I had issues with tendinitis when I was a drummer. I learned that, by far the two biggest difference makers are:
    1) Be in good shape (regular strength training, regular power training, regular cardio, and don't be overweight)
    2) Always warm up properly, and when I say properly I mean it can easily take 30+ minutes before you even begin to look at any exercises
The downside with this reality is that it's just not feasible for some people. Depending on your life circumstances (family, working hours, fatigue) it can be absolutely impossible to devote 6+ hours per week to exercise and another several hours to warming up before even trying to think of improving on the guitar, not to mention the immense impact on motivation. But if you do get there you'll be much healthier and happier.

I am 52 years old and not a musician but I have had problems with epicondylitis humeri radialis for years. As a teacher, I have to write a lot and gaming in the wrong position has made things extremely worse. Painkillers never helped and I've tried everything. Special support bandages, ointments, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, acupuncture and even shock wave therapy at the end. The only thing that helped for a while were cortisone injections. When these failed as well, i was physically and mentally exhausted. I haven't been able to sleep through the night for months and was waking up 7-10 times a night from excruciating pain. I could only bend my right elbow up to 100 degrees, which meant I had to do everything with my left hand. Having suffered from depression for over 12 years, I ended up in really serious trouble. Finally, my doctor sent me for an MRI scan, which revealed that my elbow tendon was severely damaged. The only option was surgery. In fact, my right elbow got better over time, but the overload was too much for my untrained left elbow. 2 years after the first surgery i needed one on my left elbow. Through the experience with my right arm, I no longer waited so long that it became unbearable. In the meantime, I can use both arms again up to 80% and if I do my occupational therapy exercises, I feel quite well. I can fully do my job as a teacher again. Since you are much younger, if you stick to your exercises, you will definitely be able to get everything under control. 🤗💜

I've got it down to almost unnoticeable by smoking lots of weed, spending lots of time in the dry sauna, an hour a week split into 3 sessions will do wonders for your arms. And lastly Epsom salts. I use 3 cups per bath. That's enough to make your arms float in the tub. Try to sit there for 40 minutes. I play guitar at a high level and have bad tendinitis but this has been my remedy. For anybody else suffering please try my advice and feel free to ask any questions replying to this comment. I started on bass but also play guitar, took piano lessons, and I am learning drums now. I was also a machinist for 8 years. It all adds up, my less than perfect technique, a job that is very hard on your hands and arms. I wish I could go back and do everything differently.
Idk what the best solution for me is going forward. I think it's great you're talking about this though people need to be more aware of things like this.
Musicians are athletes of fine motor skills and it's easier than most people realize to injure yourself in different ways that prevent or hinder your development. It goes even beyond just learning proper and ergonomic techniques, especially starting out it can be hard to take that stuff seriously. However a lot of times these injuries are not reversible.
I feel your pain and wish you and anyone else dealing with repetitive stress injuries the best of luck on finding a way to live with it or fix it if possible.

Before I started playing guitar I acquired permanent lumbar damage in my lower spine, tendinitis in my neck, elbows and forearms and both my shoulders have rotator cuff issues. What I did was turn vegan and ate healthy, Ive spent years experimenting with stretches and yoga. Ive been playing guitar for over a year now and learning the most ergonomic way to play while eating anti-inflammatory foods has allowed me to enjoy playing for 20 min to an hour almost everyday. Everyday I have pain but I manage it very well with being self aware and stretching carefully throughout the day. Some days I rest and watch stuff when I feel like I shouldn’t do anything. Eventually you’ll find the best balance for yourself : ) have a great day!

Hey claine, your story is really touching for me. I have had chronic headaches since I was 6 or 7, being 19 now Its been a long journey of learning how to live with chronic pain. About 6 months ago I started learning guitar, and there have been many times when I just felt like giving up because doing basically anything other than lying in bed often makes my headaches worse. while I have found medication that can lessen my pain, its still something I live with every day. Hearing your story is hard because I love music and I know u do to, and not being able to do something your so passionate about is, to put it lightly, depressing. Not to mention the fact that chronic pain by itself is something truly awrfuI. think a lesser person than yourself would have given up at this point. But your drive to find a way to live the life u want to live inspires me to do the same. U rock!

I watched a video about drug abuse yesterday where they said: "A car accident doesn't happen when you hit the pole. It happens 200ft before, when you lose control and skid on the ice". That's a good thing to remember. We usually pay attention to problems, when the effects are already visible and unavoidable. That's asking for the problem to be a lot harder to solve. It's best doing at least SOME level of prevention to maybe avoid having any problem at all. Small things do matter.

I've been drumming for a little over 30 years and the last couple of years my arm has been causing intense pain and I've been wondering if it's tendonitis or not. Now it hurts to even air drum, which just fuckin sucks. Having an exercise routine really resonates with me and it's definitely something I need to work on. Cause I also don't want to find myself pushing too hard and not being able to drum anymore or draw as well. Drawing has kinda taken the position of drumming cause of my living situation, but I could see how the injury could eventually interfere with that as well.

Thanks for making this video, and more importantly, I want to remind you that you should CONSCIOUSLY, willingly, take pride in your progress you've made through all this. A common inner voice from trauma pressures us to never take stock of the fact that we have weathered super tough shit and to then reward ourselves with a little elevated self-respect, etc. It's good to work on not only noticing our bodily states (dissociation being the double-edged sword that it is), but also our psychological and habit-oriented wins.

I was playing drums, waaaay too much. Also had tendinitis. I had to completely stop playing everything and switched to vocals, cause my body was falling apart, then the band just dissolved, so I tried rapping, but broke my neck before I could record anything and have been recording haphazardly while recovering. (I broke a vertibrae, no spinal cord damage) I couldnt play guitar or piano anymore, cause I had no feeling in my hands (couldnt draw for a whole year), drums was out of the questions and all I could was mumble, cause my jaw was so tensed up from supporting my neck. I still have incredible pain, can sometimes barely walk but somehow am getting by and getting better. Trained every day, even before I got injured, which likely saved my life now that I think about it. I got tendonitis in both thumbs last year after getting super ill. Darkest time of my life but I'm now healing a lot more, PRP injections look promising, but honestly rest and relaxation is key, hot water and cold water on and off are also SUPER good, and good supplementation and things like eggs and collagen, supplements like glucosamine and vitamin C, things like Moringa leaf powder can help with the inflammation and pain. If I would have listened to certain physio therapists I would be screwed, I had some buddies that are massage therapists and they said rest and nutrition and water are the most important thing since it's an overuse injury and stretching can often times make it worse. Tendons take longer to heal than bones!

Hyper-mobility I think is something that is under-understood/know about. It may only be a small percentage of people that get injuries, but for those that have had multi-factor pain for quite a long time it is something to look into, even if it doesn't seem like something that you have. It can sometimes be invisible or seem invisible. There is plenty of hope though, and for anyone interested in it or that has gained a diagnosis, I'd recommend seeing a specialist and someone that's able to talk about (and prescribe) medication/s as well (such as Low-Dose Naltrexone). Still have to look after your body but it makes it much easier when you understand things, and know that you can improve the ways of doing things.

I have tendinitis and sciatica and I botched the healing in a broken heal and I also have tried pain killers and smoking weed and the most beneficial things outside of like you said, stem cells and surgery, is sauna, Epsom salts. Great video Claine. It really hit home for me. I had a similar situation with my fretting arm and also had neck and shoulder problems too. Was devastated as well when I had to stop playing. Wanted to see if you explored connections with your pain in shoulder and arm. I had a sports medicine doctor at Purdue suggest my neck, shoulder and wrist pain could all be connected in something called thoracic outlet syndrome. Might be worth exploring. Also I’ve been able to play a lot more within the past two years as I started wearing the compression sleeves that a lot of athletes wear. I live in them and they’ve helped immensely deal with pain and extended my playing time. Thanks for sharing your journey and trying to help others. Hi Claire. I have had some tendonitis problems in the past. The only advice I will give is the following (backed up by a friend who plays Hockey and Tennis and who also happens to be a total PC gamer). I generally use RUB-A-535 ointment on my arm on the area that is painful, and I wrap up my arm gently with a bandage, or some reusable sleeve. It keeps the A535 ointment inside for the duration. If the A-535 doesn't work, try Tiger Balm. I also massage my arm before any activity requiring manoeuvers and muscle movement and also after activities. I also do hand stretches while I massage my forearm. There are different strengths for the RUB-a-535 ointment. Whenever the pain starts I take a break. I've seen musicians use a stand for their feet when playing the guitar and changing positions.

Also getting "good" technique could potential alleviate any misaligned ergonomics that contribute to your tendonitis/tendopathy. All in all, it sucks, but it can get better. Claire, hot damn, that was an emotional video, thank you so much for sharing!
You make incredibly important points. Playing through pain is not a healthy long term strategy. In music school I threw a couple of discs in my back from using a footstool and I was locked in a practice room for a couple of hours until I was able to stand up again so I totally get where you're coming from. 18 years later I'm significantly stronger, have much better core strength to hold up my back properly and in terms of playing I'm back in the band that used to practice at my house and we're planning to take over the world! :)
If you ask around, all the greats probably have a story something like this. They didn't get to where they are because everything just worked out, they made mistakes but they learned from them and got the help as well as put the work in to go beyond their challenges. I'm sure Dean has had a number of things go on even though he's so ridiculously capable. There's a reason he picks and fingers the way he does. There's a reason for the instruments and the string gauge and the picks, it all adds up to the right instrument for your own body, not what anybody else uses. A professional needs to be in tip top shape and have their equipment fine tuned for them to work like a well oiled machine. You got this!
Side note, I know Dean's on tour but are you going to NAMM? Cheers!

Thank you for sharing this. During peak Covid I got obsessed with "getting better at metal" and started practicing 4 hours/day without any sort of appropriate lead up to it. I developed something resembling tendinitis in my fretting hand thumb and getting a cool new guitar with a very thin neck and a flat fretboard radius seemed to make it even worse. It lingers to this day two years later but somewhat similar to what you talk about here regarding diversifying interests, I went back to playing a bit less and playing more jazz on my Gibson guitar with a "baseball bat" neck profile and I can tolerate that much better. It also has made me really audit my technique and posture and I think these things are improving slowly along with the problem itself, but more than that it's just so good to actually be able to play again. Like you've said, the longevity and joy are the point!

I'm so sorry you've been dealing with that pain but I'm glad it led to some more exciting avenues for you and that you're back to playing! 🖤

@@ClainesWorld Thanks so much! Sorry to hear about yours as well but it's great to see that you have developed an approach that seems really promising and positive. If this comment field is any indication this is a common and important issue for guitarists and musicians and even if painful, sharing your experience helps all of us.

Sorry to hear about your struggles. I am dealing with a yet to be understood issue with my elbows. Progressively gets worse and, like you, threw a dart at the wall for any and all treatments with no improvements. Will definitely check back to see, if you end up going the stem cell approach, how that worked for you. 🤘🤘

I've had similar issues, and what I will say is that I trained to use the mouse with my left hand instead to give myself some life in the interim (using a left- handed ergonomic mouse mind you). It was surprisingly quick to train my brain to use my left hand instead - that way you can still use the computer to make music pain-free, its worth the effort honestly.

Being a content creator and musician sucks since we sit most of the time during the day. Practicing guitar, editing video, mixing audio, working in general and playing video games.
I actually experienced similar things while I was working a full time day job. Luckily the only thing that's coming back here and there is the back issue and some neck issues. However, going to the gym 3-6 days a week has helped immensely + most important thing a good night sleep on a good and firm bed.
I hope you get better really soon and hopefully this thing goes away completely or mostly - fingers crossed!!!!
Also, these were the things I had to do to get rid of most of the pain and issues:
    1. I've quit my job where I was sitting 9 hours a day clicking on shitty excel sheets and servers.
    2. I've ordered a metallic hand brace for my right hand which I use till this day if I am editing drums, videos, audio etc...
    3. Went to a physio for 3 months weekly.
Not sure if that helps to anyone - but getting active and moving is the most important thing to counteract all the sitting we do daily....
Best whishes and sending all the positive energy from Galway, Ireland!!!!

Both of my hands have tendonitis and carpal tunnel from playing keyboards. I can't play any where near the level I used to. Fortunately today's technology allows me to continue to compose and produce my own music which was my first passion. Great video!

That's been my story down to a T. Was always pretty good at keeping active and consistently playing but after awhile things take their toll. I was getting it really bad in my left forearm from my wrist to my elbow. I have it in my right wrist the worse but it doesn't bother me playing. I as well had to stop working out and it's definitely depressing as hell. Gotta know when to take it easy. I got back I to working out and it's definitely helped, just gotta listen to your body. Worst thing for me is I've always liked a fairly heavy gauge and had to go lighter for awhile. Playing with heavier strings lately just fine! There's a series of great videos on UA-cam titled something along the lines of treating guitar tendonitis that really helped me out when I had it really bad. Looks like it's an older video from a middle aged dude. Hope you manage well!
    STAY TECH🤘🏻

Dealing with tendinitis and Crohns. Safe to say it destroyed my self esteem, makes playing so hard at times.
But we're here, talking about. I'm getting physical and mental therapy, I'm eating right and I feel some change.
    Get better y'all!

I put some of this in another video, the one about playing live for the 1st time with your new band.
Your story is very similar to a guitarist of a band I follow from Japan. The guitarist is Yukimura Shiren" Hirano, he started of learning piano, when he was 7, and then moved on to Guitar in his early teens. He went to the Tokyo College of Music, playing guitar, and when he was 16 was voted the most exciting prospect for guitar, for that year. After he left he was in a few bands, then in 2016 he picked up Tendinitis, it may have been down to doing 5-6 full albums, and touring the the bands to promote the albums the year before, he normally did 3 a year.
Music was his life, he did not know how to do anything else, and now he was looking at having to give up music. So he gave up all the bands he was in, apart from the one he had started, and fond a way he could play. He got himself a Strandberg (headless) as it had less weight to it, he also got a stand for it so he could practice, so there was no weight at all, also he could adjust the height of the stand, so he could sit downd while playing. He also played live, while using in. He is now getting better, so does not have to use it for the full show, the shows are around 1 1/2 hours. There is also a cut out in the Strandberg on the body, so if he is carrying it, he can rest the guitar on his leg, with his leg on a monitor.
He said it was difficult to get used to playing with a guitar on a stand, but he is now used to it.
Here is a live video of him playing with the guitar on the stand ua-cam.com/video/5oHPCQucm3U/v-deo.html
As for myself, I got Tendinitis when I was 20, and yes it is all about learning to manage the illness. I am 60 now, and have not had any problems now, for the last 15-20 years. But it's still in the back of my mind, and I'm really careful about how I use that arm, as I do not want that pain to come back.

Omg we're so much alike there's so much you discussed here and geez honestly I can totally relate to alot of your personal and physical pains over the years I've gone through some similar and or crazy shit !!!! From a spider bite to my right hand back in 2009 which I couldn't play for two years because of nerve damage and necrosis ....but I eventually got into playing a little....last year I was In a pretty bad car accident which destroyed my car and I dislocated my left shoulder and blew out my elbow real bad....6 months of physical therapy later and of course I couldn't play guitar for a year ....I recently around January 2023 started playing again on a serious level as far as practicing and I practice 5-7 times a week even after my 13 hour work days ( I work in a manufacturing factory) but since January I've bought 3 Ibanez's, 2 Mitchell ms450's, Epiphone Les Paul, Jackson, a Harley Benton pro 1, and 2 beautiful acoustic guitars in which I never play LOL😂😂😂😂😂😂😂LOL!!!! BUT it's just me no kids no family no friends no girlfriend (anymore)😔😔😔....I've just discovered your channel here and am just completely into listening to you talk about all these things .I think your totally frickin awesome ❤❤❤and I wish I could meet a cool chick like you to just bounce off each other's energy's while practicing and creating some really serious badass dark fucking music!!!!!! I listen to a huge variety of different music from Motown to blistering death metal !!!!! That horror movie dark electronic music you for is really cool I like this kind of music as well ....as long as it's dark and gloomy I love it lol.....have you ever listened to GGFH or Haus arafna before?? Absolutely the sickest darkest weirdest heaviest shit I've found so far !!! 🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️

I’ve been playing guitar for two years now and i’m a bit afraid now. I don’t experience any pain while practicing and and go around 24 hrs between sessions (about an hour every day). I play lots of Gojira, and recently any 7-string stuff i want to learn. But lots of alternate picking, gallops all from the wrist. My pose seems fine when i look at recordings of myself playing. But i shall be even more careful from now on, and work out more. This was a really eye opening video. I don’t have any virtuoistic ambitions or anything, but this seems like it can happen to anyone reckless enough.
