    "You never get over the love of a good cat"
    I appreciate the honesty that Christine presented in this episode with her wardrobe. We all knew she didn't paint and do wood working in nice handmade clothing. But, there is something so magical about the fairytale world she creates in her shoots where she is perfectly dressed and assembling a sofa, or painting, or making anything. It is a fantasy of what it would be like to live in a macabre fairytale and I love that. There is something so escapist about her little fictional world.

    This whole painting kind of shows why gothic culture is still so alive today. Death is a part of humanity which we always sort of struggle to understand, to cope with, to explain. But a gothic wisdom beckons us to put our interpretation of that vague and diverse effect of death on ourselves, into art.
    This video had a strong effect on me emotionally . . and it's simply an incredible piece.

    • @TuckerSP2011
      @TuckerSP2011 4 роки тому +9

      People in past generations really embraced or accepted death and lived with it as a reality far more than we do today. Goth is sort of a continuation of that. My grandmother wore black exclusively after a very dear relative died and stayed in black. In the old days they kept the corpse in the house until the funeral. Death wreath marked the door so that neighbors knew to be respectful of the grief of the family within.
      People made memento Mori and saved hair and other beloved objects.
      On the flip side there is this:
      Recently my friend lost her beloved father. Her downstairs neighbors in her garden apartment already had a gruesome Halloween display featuring a hanging corpse right outside of her door. Out of respect for her loss I believe thst they should have taken it down, but they didn't. Also they played spooky music and had corpses digging their way out, inflatables and other things. I felt so sorry for her to have to move the corpse out of her way when she would come and go to make arrangements for his funeral.
      These days we get it over with fast and just move on.

If you have done the same, than you can compare yourself to her. If you do put down the hours, maybe you need a better source of knowledge, sometimes it's a game changer. • @jebsmith323
      @jebsmith323 3 роки тому +4

      Woven fabric has a warp and a weave, perpendicular threads interwoven. That gives it a grain and a bias. Fabric stretches on the bias, but if you tear it on the grain, it speeds down the fabric. In a loosely woven fabric, then you will be able to pull away a single thread the length of the tear.

    • @christinagould6765
      @christinagould6765 3 роки тому +1

      It's actually not the best way to cut fabric or straighten the grain because it stretches the threads and disfigures the weave in the torn area. The best way to cut the fabric is the old fashioned way--with scissors--and then straighten the grain using the one thread across technique.

    That painting is beautiful along with the concept behind it.
    The end of this video choked me up. I used to live with my best friend and around the time I first moved in with her 6 years ago, she rescued a kitten (the black cat in my picture) that she named Inky (in the light his fur had an ink in water pattern) and we both pretty much raised him. Just before I moved out almost 2 years ago he had to be put down due to a severe urinary issue that couldn't be fixed after changing his diet, multiple medications, and 2 procedures. Inky would always hide in my room at night because my best friend slept with her door shut. He'd wait for me to get comfortable then hop up with me and curl into a ball on my legs. He'd get grumpy if I didn't get to sleep on time.
    Saying goodbye was one of the hardest things I've had to do. I still miss him very much.

      I went to school for painting and I would say the only things she did that aren’t traditional painting steps are the fact that she drew the whole painting out before she painted it and the fact that she painted the thinned paint over the fat. The first rule is not really a rule (I don’t think), but more of a preference and some artists do sketch out the whole painting...but as you become a better artist you sketch less and mark out the painting with rough sketches using paint and complete a monochromatic underpainting and use that as a guide.. The second is pretty much a rule...and she did it half right. The rule is called “fat over lean”. You start the first layers of a painting with paint (fat) thinned with gamsol (lean) and then the final layers will consist of paint (fat) mixed with linseed oil (fat). This rule prevents the painting from cracking. However, the most important rule I learned in school was that once you know the rules, you can break them! It looks like she painted the oils directly on to the canvas without a thinning agent for her base layer, which would make it extremely difficult to achieve this level of detail. I was really impressed. However, since the bottom layer is just oil paint, it is just fat and the upper layer is fat as well...so I am not exactly sure how that will age.
      Anyway, all this art school shit aside, when I saw the final piece I was literally blown away. She was so modest! That painting was by far better than 90% of the paintings I saw in my painting classes! Hahaha

    Oh my god. Christine, the last part when you describe what the painting represents literally made me start crying. My cat Udo is going to be 15 years old today and I ask for at least 5-10 more years with him every year. He has been with me through multiple moves, boyfriends, and life changes. This painting truly moved me. Not only because of your love for your kitty, but also because I was a painting major in college and for some reason it totally zapped the passion of painting right out of me. I haven’t painted since David Bowie’s death. I painting a portrait in honor of his life and then for some reason it’s just been creative darkness. Watching you paint has moved me deeply and made me want to create again. Everything is so scary and terrible right now (I am a now permanently laid off bartender in Portland, OR because they closed my bar for good) and I have been really wanting a healthy way of processing my grief and also bring myself back to that girl who use to paint and draw incessantly...and your show, especially this episode have been a huge source of inspiration. Your creativity is so prolific and I wish with every ounce of my being to emulate it as best as I am able. I still miss Rose SO MUCH, but I have to say, Thank you for inviting us into your home and sharing so much inspiration and beauty with us. Speaking for myself, I can’t tell you how much I need it right now. 🖤🐱

    I cried hard watching this. I had to put down my familiar, Bella, 4 months ago and her passing really messed me up. She was only 3 years old. Her kidneys had deteriorated to the point an ultra sound couldn't find them. The vet said this may have been a birth defect and that she may have been in pain all her life. Bellie never once told me or made it known through our connection she was hurting, but she loved her tummy massaged, which may have been a clue. She never left my side, she followed me everywhere. I miss her so so much. I've avoided talking to anyone about Belles because i dont think they'll understand how much she meant to me and how much of a place in my heart and soul she had. Watching this made me let out alot of my bottled emotions and inspired me to want to make my own painting of my feelings i still have for Belle.

    Fashion student here, about tearing woven fabric vs cutting it-in addition to cutting down on fraying, you also take human error out of the cutting process. When you tear it, it follows one of the woven threads in a grid, basically? So any rectangular shape is perfect. The boutique fabric store I used to go to would always tear fabric when possible so you actually received the yardage you paid for, as opposed to like, Joann’s, where I pretty much always pick up a yard extra in fear of loss.

    In case nobody else shares, artist normally use duck cotton canvas, than prime it with gesso ( for a canvas painting, oil or acrylic).
    They use it because it's a tighter weave, muslin or broad cloth is more likely to sag under the weight of the wet paint.
    But if I've learned anything in life, the only time you fail is when you fall to try something.

    "I'm not crying, you're crying," I say, wiping my face with the back of one hand. As you were painting yourself in the beginning, before you got into the greater detail, I thought I was seeing a little inspiration from Alexandre Cabanel's 'Ophelia', but the final project was so original and amazing. I love watching everything that you do.

    The ending really got to me, I miss my dog terribly and think about him a lot. Sometimes I think I see him in my peripheral vision. I like to think I will see him again. The painting turned out as an exactly as you had described, it's sad but more hopeful I think. Extremely beautiful!

    You are truly a gifted person. You can tackle anything and make it beautiful. You should do more paintings. The scenes of your garden and the flowers on your porch are so tranquil.
