This is the best explanation on how to install the fuse taps correctly for beginners, thank you so much.
Very simple and clear, with no extra babbling. Great video!
Probably one of the best tutorials on UA-cam for anything. Well done.
Thank you. I installed my wifes dashcam and after I did, I ran into your video after I couldnt sleep at 0330. Im glad I saw your video and flipped my fuse taps around! Thank you for breaking it down Barney-style to us.
I can't begin to thank you for this simple, to-the-point, and detailed explanation.
Straight to the point - and perfectly explained. Literally a perfect DIY video. Thank you!
Dang man. Informative, quick, right to the point. Love it, and I wish more people would make videos like this.
I wish all youtube videos were this straight to the point! Thank you
After watching so many tutorials on fuse taps, this is the MOST informative and detailed! Thanks
Thank you for making an easily followable video. Other creators just think everyone knows what they're talking about. You showed and spoke about all the detail how it should be. Thank you again.
This is the best straight to the point video that I've seen in a long time. Thank you!
Thank you! This is a much better explanation than I have seen in other videos! Very clear and easy to understand. Thanks again!
Great job on the video. Very detailed and explained clearly. Made my install and day easier. THANK YOU!
Bro! This video was awesome! Easy to follow and understand and no unnecessary gabbing on and on. 👍
Thanks for the detailed video. There are a lot of fuse tap videos and most don't cover load and line. Great tutorial.
This was the best tutorial of how to use these fuse taps and how they work. Thank you!
Incredibly helpful video. Your channels make this so easy to understand for beginners. Much appreciated
Phenomenal video! I wasn’t aware that there are 4 different fuse types, some of which seem quite similar in appearance. That explains the Amazon 1-star reviews I’ve read on fuse taps which messed up the contact spacing (or fell out easily) from a fuse box! Also really liked your explanation of how to find which side of a fuse in a fuse box is the 12v source side. Cheers!
Thank you for this video. I was having an argument with someone recently about whether there is a right way and a wrong way to insert a fuse tap. He insisted that the electricity flows through the fuses in series regardless of which way it was inserted (which defeats the purpose of having two fuses). I was trying to make him understand that when the fuse tap is inserted the correct way each fuse acts as its own circuit, but when inserted upside down the electricity enters through the "exit" of the OEM fuse slot and the "entrance" of that fuse then feeds the other fuse. Thank you for proving that I was correct in my understanding of how a fuse tap works.
Excellent. I appreciate the clear explanation. Short, simple, all info. Thank you.
This was incredibly informative and well explained. Thank you!
Thank you posting this. I just added a fuse tap for my amp remote wire. Wasn't getting power to the amp. Wasn't sure if I needed both fuses for the fuse tap. Now I know. Thanks again
Thank you for this very helpful video, I'm doing a diy install of a front and rear dashcam on my subaru crosstrek 2023, and this was the part that I knew the least about. Much appreciated.
Excellent! Now I know how to find which way to install a fuse tap. Clear and precise explanations!
Thank you so much for this, I had no idea how to use these taps :).. I was trying to figure it all all evening, until I watched your video,, high five..
Eye opener of an explanation. I didn't know both fuse slots needed to be filled to send power to your circuit. I also didn't know fuses were directional. Don't ever lose hope on your project because it doesn't work the first time!
Nice to see a video that's detailed short only 6 minutes with easy to follow instruction. And the nice chart to look at on the most common fuse type on the market.
Very great and educational video without fluff. Thank you very much.
Good information. Planning to install my foglights. It has a relay, 2 power leads, 1 acc, and 1 power lead and the other ones are chassis ground and battery negative. Can I just use the chassis ground for the negative leads and fuse one of them. Lastly, what will happen if I match the fuse. Some say you can match it??
Nice, simple explanation. Good job!
First comment I see on all of these videos say, best explanation on internet. Genuinely never fully understood any other videos like I did with this one.
Super helpfull!!! Thank you sir. Best instruction on this I was able to find.
Very simple and clear! Thank you.
Very very helpful. Thank you and blessings 🙌
Extremely helpful explanation. Thank you for this. :)
Good video to explain the directional part. Initially I thought that since fuses are not directional, so the fuse tap would not be directional. But, after your video, I realized that the current would flow directly to the dashcam instead of the fuse if I install it the other way. Also the neutral simply goes to chassis in cars, interesting. So that's why the battery has a wire connected to the body. Thanks for making the video. Now I can try installing the dashcam.
Awesome, simple vid...Thank you!
Excellent video, thanks!
Excellent job. Thank you.
Thanks for just getting to the point! Cheer!
Super helpful thanks!
very helpful and very well done. thank you.
Most fuse taps ive seen are 10a rated. I noticed you tapped into the 20amp fuse also…is that too much load for fuse tap wire? Just wondering? Or is it just about the top fuse which is lower amps through that tap wire i suppose?
great explanation! i like the detail - thanks
Great explanation and video, thanks!
Great video. Very informative. Liked and subbed! 👍🏾
The white thing on the left of your fuses is a fuse puller. Use it, not pliers.
What if the car didn't have one....then what instead of using pliers just go buy another one
Pliers work just as fine
@@matthopkins1107no
Muchas gracias 👍 buen video🏆
thank you so much, very useful guidance
You can add different Ampe on a fuse holder ?
I was watching to remind myself how to do it, bc the fuse rating was confusing to me. You didn't explain this. Mixing rating within the tap. That's OK though, I am sure I'll find it.
I did learn about flow rate, checking which side of the fuse is hot, and matching it to the flow direction of the tap. I didn't not know this, and it seems important.
So, thank you for making this video, it was quick, clear, consise. Good job.
Wow - what a perfect video. Thx.
great video! thanks
What if u have a relay on both side n the pigtail is in the way? Is there another type of fuse tap I can use
What about a Maxi (FK3) type fuse? Can you tap to one of those?
Thanks for a clear answer
Thank you very much!
I sure thank you!!
so you butt connected a different gauge wire (looks like 20-22 awg) to a thicker wire, and that's fine?
If you don't have a tester and you connect these if they're done wrong can you just reverse turn the connector around
would it matter about awg size??? i have a 20awg hardwire kit but my fuse taps awg wire size is 16. would it be fine to crimp it just like that?
can you please help in finding the needed fuse location to connect constant power source to a dash cam so it keeps running while in parking mode, the car is 2017 Cadillac XT5, dash cam is Vantrue N5.
and thank you so much
Great video! 🎉
Awesome video. So many dashcam installation videos skip the part of confirming the orientation of the fuse tap insertion.
Agreed. Now that I fully understand how these work, I have to go back and double check some work that my "professional" mechanic did. He added a fuse tap to an empty slot that is not used from the factory. However, he put two fuses in the tap instead of just utilizing the accessory slot, so now the car's OEM slot is receiving power when it shouldn't be.
good video, thank you for no extra BS..
Great job.. keep it up
Thank you so much.
What fuse goes in the top slot? The bottom one has the one which we going to take out from the fuse box.
3:57 the slot where you put in the purple fuse, is it the main slot or the top one? thank you for the informative video sir
awsome video!
Hello, great videos, to the point, no bs...Question: Is there such thing as a Fuse Tap (for low profile mini) that can handle 15A, or maybe 20A? All my local auto parts stores only carry Fuse Taps for low profile mini that carry 10A max. Any help or website than you know of, would be greatly appreciated
The reason you only find fuse tap that handle 10A is because the gauge of wire they use might be 12-14 gauge. This means the wire is what's limiting how much current it can handle. I have not seen any fuse tap that uses a heavier gauge wire. If you must tap a high current wire, you need to look into splicing and soldering onto an existing high current factory wire.
Is there any way to tap into an mcase fuse?
Thank you.
What are the wires that you connect to the fuse tap?
Great video! My fuses are showing voltage on each side. I checked the fuses and they’re good. How do I know which way to install the tap?
Nismo pathfinder?? Had no idea that was a thing, very cool
My Man!
GOOD JOB THUMBS UP.....BRO
It is very cool! But.... how to get to the ground potential the same way?
Great video, I just did mine today. I thought the fuses were paralled together, but the red powers the fuse your replacing and the orange protects the the new load, coming out of the red wire. Why didn’t they say that on the dash cam instructions, but who looks at instructions. So there sort of in series, splitting the power.
Very good video
Hi dial2fast! Which one is the fuse for the cig plug at the cargo area? Can’t find it from the pathfinder manual
What’s your recommendation if we want to replace the cig plug not to turn on all the time?
You added two 10 amp fuses for the thing you're powering. How did you decide on 10amp vs something else?
Bottom fuse is the factory one. The top one just need to be higher rated than what the dashcam requires for current. Most dashcam draws less than 1 amp. So you can even put a 2A fuse at the top if you want.
Super
Thanks
means to power up the dashcam, we need to install another fuse to the fuse tap adapter? if so how much capacity fuse is to be install?
The original fuse (that you pulled out to "borrow" power from) goes in the bottom of the fuse tap. Whatever you're powering with the tap (wire) determines what amperage fuse you use on the top. The vast majority of dashcams, including those with front and rear cams, are likely fine with nothing more than a 2A fuse. But check the manual for the camera to be sure! Don't run a larger fuse that you need.
I tried to do running lights but they dont turn on. Could it be that i have to tighten the connector
nice info bro. i subcribed your channel.
I installed an external voltage regulator and connected it to the accessory power in the fuse box. Supposed to work on ignition only, but when I come back in the morning my battery is dead. What can be the issue?
Professional car audio installer said yellow acc wire tapped into 20a fuse power socket, red wire also goes to the other 20a fuse power socket black ground wire to bare metal, but the dash cam won’t turn off by itself, but I noticed you have ya wires tapped to 10a fuse? am I doing it wrong?
Maybe parking mode is enabled?
If you install a fuse tap into say a 10amp fuse. Then install the fuse for your new device which also needs a 10amp fuse. With both these running they could be drawing up to 20amps. How do we know the wire leading up to the original fuse isn't rated at 15amps which would have been enough for the original device but not enough for the now potential 20amp draw with the additional device? Will the rating be on the wire or is there a way to test? Genuinely new to all this so just trying to find out what could go wrong before I attempt anything.
You are correct that when both devices combined (assuming your new device is also drawing 10A), then the total current draw of both devices could exceed the factory wiring for that 10A circuit. The simple (and safe) way of dealing with this is you need to find out what is the current draw of your add-on device. If it's a dashcam, then it typically draws about 250-300mA. The combined current draw of the original fuse and the add-on fuse must not exceed the original fuse rating. You will not necessarily know the factory wire gauge behind the fuse box, so just follow the rule of both devices combined cannot exceed the original fuse rating.
How much Ampere (eg. 5A/10A/15A) should be the new fuse that we will place in the fuse tap for the dashcam ?
You shouldn't need more than 5A, but you can also put a 10A, and that will work fine.
what amp fuze would I need if im adding 2-12 volt outlets? I figured a 10amp would be fine.
The fuse amp rating you need is strictly dependent on the device you will be connecting and how much current it draws. If you are not sure, probably 5A or 10A will work for most car accessories. Also make sure the circuit you are tapping is able to support the current.
Do the 2 fuses on the add-a-fuse kit need to be the in the same amp rating? Can I have 20 amp in the top slot and a 10 amp in the bottom slot?
Both fuses should not exceed the original fuse rating. Also keep in mind all the devices on that circuit cannot exceed the fuse rating of the original fuse combined.
@@dial2fastI'm sorry, but I am confused. I have the same minivan and am going to use #3 (option), so the bottom slot will be the 10A fuse from the fuse box. Can I put a 20A in the top slot?
If you are installing a dashcam, why are there TWO fuse taps- a red and yellow? I am about to install a reversing mirror/camera and assuming I need ONE fuse tap from a 12v ignition fuse source. Any advice?
I believe it's because some dashcams have the parking mode feature which draws power from the constant fuse (yellow wire) while the ignition is off.
Thumbs up sir
So if you have the fuse tap in the wrong position you’ll most likely blow the top fuse?
Do you have any idea about the type of fuse taps sued in 2020 BMW X2 ???
just take the fuse out and look
@@tanvirsingh5506 I don't have the car
Putting in a dash cam. One thing I've ran into and not sure how to proceed. I have multiple "factory designated" open fuse slots in my fuse box, that are ready to accept a fuse. Would this be correct? If I placed the 5A Dash cam fuse into the second slot (as in your intro), I would then place another fuse i.e. a 20A fuse in the first position (that simply acts as a pass through), would that be correct? Of course I'd have to ensure I was tapping into a proper ACC or Battery fuse box slot. Thank you !!
Sorry for the late reply. If you have fuse slots that currently do not have any fuse in it, you will need to use a multimeter to check if that fuse slot has voltage coming in. One side of that fuse slot will have voltage coming in and the other side will not. If that fuse slot doesn't have a fuse to begin with, you actually don't even need to put a fuse in the bottom slot. The voltage will still pass the voltage through the top slot to your dashcam. If there was a factory fuse to begin with, then put that fuse in the bottom slot.
Thanks@@SimpleDIYMedia
nice explanation. But I just wanna know why you also tapped on constant 12v? Is that for Parking Mode of the dash?
You are correct. Depending on the dashcam you have. Some need both ign 12v and constant 12v for parking mode. Some only require ign 12v for parking mode. In this video, I installed fuse tap for the 2.
Hey the Fuse tap supplies the positive to the device but where does the negative wire from device get tapped into? I am obviously missing something
You need to connect the black negative wire to a ground bolt under the dash. Look around under the driver's dash and try to find a bolt you can loosen and using a ring terminal, tighten the bolt on it.
