People talk about the menopause in terms of couple relationships but for me, menopause effected me in a huge way when my mother went through it. Family life was hard anyway but when my mum went through the menopause it affected the whole family in a really bad way. We didn’t know about menopause back then and had no idea that was the reason for her horrible mood swings. I remember days when she would wake up in a very happy mood and by the end of the day she was absolutely raging and having huge arguments with my Dad, I always knew that when she woke up happy it was a ticking time bomb as to how long that would last. Like I say, we didn’t know this was the menopause for a few years and so it was a horrible time for my mum foremost but the rest of the family too. My mum eventually went onto HRT which saved her and changed her life for the better. The wounds and scars of her menopause are still in my memory but I am so happy that she found a doctor who really helped her.

Nadia, that was spot on when you said about the "rumble" of hormones beneath the service. It's like your body is a volcano which bubbles and erupts and spews forth these great waves every month, and then..... one day ... it is dormant. Spent. (Or, that's how it feels.)The life force has gone. HRT can be the spark that sets you on fire again (in all of the good ways).

Another really interesting discussion on a highly emotive subject. You're right, education is the key, this affects the whole family. My daughters said they never knew which way I was going to jump in any interaction, lots of walking on eggshells.
I never really even knew about HRT, just not on my radar, menopause was something you just had to accept and get on with.
It really is unacceptable and sad that in this day and age something so relevant to the whole of society is dismissed and ridiculed as ' just your hormones' and a bit of a joke to some.

This is confusing to me. I don't quite understand what you said about a "hormone deficiency". Surely, there can't be a mistake in nature? Isn't it just natural for estrogen to lessen after menopause, while vitamin deficiencies are not natural, if we follow the rules of nature? I once heard that in Asia women don't have the Western symptoms of menopause because of their lifestyle/diets. So maybe our lifestyle is just off? Don't children have less estrogen (i.e. estrogen deficiencies)?

This is so helpful, and about time that finally there seems to be a Menopause Movement going on, for too long there’s been a societal silence around women’s hormones or menopause. Thankfully women like yourself Nadia are courageously speaking out and to have men openly talking about it too is just as important, so I think you’re both amazing for doing this. You may be interested to know that some big employers are starting to offer menopause support to their staff which I think shows a shift forwards in awareness about it. I work on a helpline and menopause is one of the biggest issues I listen to daily, it’s lonely & scary out there for many women going through it

Growing up, I can't ever remember the menopause being mentioned. Periods were briefly mentioned at school, but nothing about menopause. Family members didn't talk about it, but some must have been going through it. It seems so strange thinking about it now, and I hope to educate my own children, so they will be aware of it, because I will go through it at some point. It's pretty scary without the knowledge, and it's great that you're talking about it. Why has it been shrouded in secrecy for so long?! X

Not only do we need to teach men all about the menses and hormonal imbalances, but women of all ages 11+ need to be educated on HOW TO MANAGE our physical and mental health with all types of remedies (Eastern and Western HRT), proper nutrition, and appropriate physical/mindful exercises. The more stress one has in their lives, the more affected hormonally imbalanced a women can be, which affects her overall health and immunity. At the end of the day, women can't keep "blaming" it all on the ailment either, without doing our best to keep our health in check. Still there is NO guarantee that good upkeep will stave off the worst PMS and menopausal symptoms.
I'm a Gen Xer, raised by a Spartan mom, and I got very little pass from society for the darkest days I had during my periods--Debilitated and unproductive, passed out from so much blood loss/anemia. My daughter is way better off in this era, and I hope it will continue to open up for all men and women. 🙏🏽

I love YOU, Mark! My bromance is always alive with you, amigo. This is so poignant, this discussion. It's like a meeting of the sexes, and it's a beautiful thing. HRT really has helped SO much. My wife has energy again, and she can function, which is so uplifting. Menopause did spur me to try and research anything and everything I could. Mostly because I was afraid of pissing her off. She's a tiny little thing, but she's like a Yorkshire heatseeking missle when she's angry and it had a radar for my Tex-Mex backside. LOL Thank you for this guys, truly. This is SUCH a meaningful and needed discussion everyone should have with their partner. We can't learn without understanding. And this helps so much.

I absolutely love this! I entered surgical menopause (full hysterectomy )2 years ago at age 38 and my husband has been incredible. He’s been so supportive and even though he might not understand entirely what’s happening, he is constantly by my side. What with having anxiety and having had previous health issues it is so hard to remember why I’m feeling off sometimes. It’s not easy, but I’m starting to embrace life for all it’s glory! I’m not the same woman as I once was, but that’s okay! I have wisdom and a wonderful estrogen patch to keep me in check! 👍You’re not alone ladies! I promise! ♥️ Nadia always raises these important topics, and Mark is a wonderful example of what it is to be a loyal and loving husband!

Thank you lovelies. I think if we can start to have the same awareness, compassion and support for menopause as we have been developing for mental health issues and addiction then we'll be getting somewhere. Highly recommend the book Code Red by Lisa Lister, for women and male partners. BTW Giving menstrual blood back to the earth is a lost ancient, sacred practice that used to be the norm for thousands of years but has been shamed and been made disgusting relatively recently by patriarchal programming.

I had a hysterectomy when I was 53 and I had suffered for 10 years with exhausting and painful periods , after the op went straight into the menopause and realised what hot flushes were - luckily I don’t have them very often now - I don’t take HRT , although was given tablets by my surgeon- threw them away, but after your confession on a Sunday morning chat , I would like to try HRT because it is now derived from Yam
Mark - Nanny Di was ahead in the feeding of plants with blood - I know I suggested blood, fish and bone for feeding potatoes.... just make sure it’s out of a packet 😊😆😂- Great story

I remember during my teen years, my mother became extremely irritable, especially with my Dad, one time she called his name and because he was engrossed in his Tv show and didn’t answer her, she smashed it with a hammer, these kinds of incidents were common during my mother’s menopause years, the rage was off the scale.
In turn this has made me very conscious of my hormones and tracking them to see any changes, my biggest fear is becoming that woman full of rage.

Great pod cast! All of this stuff needs to be common knowledge. Women and men need to not fall into the trap of "it's just your hormones." It's never "just" anything. The fact that your hormones are going crazy is a serious medical condition. It's an awful feeling to be living with. I felt like I was going mad when I went through puberty. Then menopause hit and the madness returned. These weren't brief episodes. They were years long struggles of feeling mad several times a month. Times when I wanted to hurt myself and times when I did hurt myself. It's an awful feeling. People write it off and tell you to "buck up buttercup". Or older people tell you too bad. Get on with it. I've never used it as an excuse but man....it was mentally and physically draining.

I took the pill for a year almost a decade ago, and it changed me as a person entirely. I have never felt right since then, and I have all the symptoms you are talking about from menopause.
