  • This is the camera test of the Sony FS5 mark II. There are two thing we will look at in this video first is the High ISO Performance going from 2000 ISO to 102,400 ISO and the second is an exposure recovery test. This consists of overexposing and underexposing the image +/- 5 Stops and then trying to recover it in post-production. This can be an important part of dealing with the footage in case you make a mistake on set if you can recover that in post it might not be a totally lost shot.

    Really loving these exposure recovery tests! Seems like a good barometer for usable dynamic range. Thanks!

    I would like to see it tested in a dark room or house, which is how weddings usually get done. High ISO on a bright day gives pretty good video in almost any modern camera nowadays.

    Nice.. but would you test the FS5 MK2 using the Prores RAW and do the exposure test.

    Great video, thanks a lot! Unfortunately, this is a 7 year old sensor and extremely noisy. Its hard to conceive Sony being the world's biggest (and best) manufacturer of imagining sensors, updates this camera to MkII and sticks in it the same part. For me, investing on a new camera with a 7 year old chip, is absolutely a no go.. no matter how great the colors are. Thanks for the video again :)

    Thanks for the video. I shoot a Sony FS7 at work and I like the file size, color quality, gradability, audio and overall features of the camera. That said it's "achilles heal" is it's low light performance - really poor. Considerable noise above 1600 ISO. I've considered buying a used FS5 even though I'm a Canon shooter personally (sometimes we use Canon lenses on our work camera).

    I have an FS700R and I owned an FS5 for about two months. I was pretty shocked to see how soft that FS5 always looked. In fact, it seems to me that the FS700R with the same sensor resolves noticeably more detail than the FS5. My only guess is that Sony placed a very heavy optical low pass filter on that sensor that is NOT on the FS700R. (raw 4k) The FS5 must not match the image quality of the much more expensive FS7 and I'm guessing that is the reason why they changed the low pass filter. The original FS700R was released long before the FS7 ever existed so it had no "real" competition to worry about back in that day. I dunno for sure, just an observation on the FS5. It's just a VERY "soft" 4k camera.

      Very Interested in your comment. Are you comparing FS700 4k with external Rec and FS5 with External Rec?

    • @clifftotten7609
      @clifftotten7609 6 років тому

      Yes,...4k raw out to Atomos conversion to 4k video (ProRes). I have no way to "prove" my suspicion but I would almost bet my life that Sony installed a heavier optical low pass filter of the FS5 that softened it's image more than the FS7 or FS700. I believe the FS700 and FS70 have a lighter OLPF even though all three use the exact same sensor underneath. Dont ask me for evidence or Sony admission link. This is not a "fact" that I'm claiming. However, just look at the softness of the FS5 image. (It's soft to me but maybe not to other people) I sold my FS5 and kept my FS700R for 4k recording because of his very reason.

    Would it be possible to get a side-by-side, or at least some comments on how the Mk2 compares to the Mk1? Is it a significant improvement in terms of low light and recovery? (Sadly it's hard to judge samples by ourselves given how UA-cam compression affects the data).

    I’m very curious why the underexposure test used ND instead of lowering the ISO. Yes, you’ll lose some dynamic range, but the lower ISO typically saves more data in the shadows, which typically would not introduce as much noise when it’s brought back up (at least not as quickly)

    • @lensprotogo
      @lensprotogo  6 років тому +1

      Because we want to rate the sensor at the same iso and reduce the actual light hitting the sensor to show how it would handle in a darker situation not just lowering the iso to change the exposure.

    • @MichaelDHead
      @MichaelDHead 6 років тому

      That is a good test, but I would be interested to see the test done with lower ISO settings - less dynamic range, but more detail will be retained in the shadows. I would also add my request for a Prores raw test. Thank you for all that you do!

    Nice. Question I have the fs5 and I am not so happy with it because I am getting to much noise and I am thinking to use gain instead of iso but I am not sure that's going to solve that problem. The thing is that I don't edit it I want to give the video as it and I don't now why the video is too noise. I am using 3.5 lens and is crop is that the problem? I use it always auto. Thank you for your help

  • @SanczykLucas
    @SanczykLucas 5 років тому

    Ey Greg! Maybe you know the answer to this. Output the fs5 (with the raw update) and the fs5m2 to an Atomos Shogun Inferno would give the same image, with same colours, highlight rolloff etc? Or the "colour science improvement" sony did with the Mark 2 would also translate in RAW improvements?

    • @lensprotogo
      @lensprotogo  5 років тому

      I'm not 100% sure I just looked around and it seems to be the same sensor so you would think the RAW would give access to all the same information but it could still be slightly processing the raw differently, either way, they should be very close.

    i have a really stupid question, coming from dslrs i am used to exposing using the exposure meter found in all dslrs. How to I properly expose the fs5ii? I mean how can I know exactly how many stops Ive under or overexposed?

    • @BradMagnus
      @BradMagnus 5 років тому +1

      Check out tutorials from Alister Chapman on exposing S-Log footage. The gist of it is, you expose skin tones to the right values using zebras and you're good to go.

    • @_STNML
      @_STNML 5 років тому

      You actually have to learn how ISO, shutter, and aperture works hahaha. Shutter and ISO increase by 1 stop by doubling the speed. Then learn fstops in relation to a stop of light.

      @@leedonohue " I mean how can I know exactly how many stops Ive under or overexposed?".....I didnt miss the point of your question. I jsut gave you the mathematical answer. I assumed you knew how to get correct exposure - then told you how to increase based on stops of light....not a zerbra reading. I'd still recommend you learn how ISO, Aperture, and shutter speed affects fstops if you havent already.
