There is some Sony FS5 mark 1 Raw footage out there, that looks extremely nice ! It’s just a camera that gets more criticism than positive hype. People are relying to much on technology than on skill. That’s why they hop from camera to camera.

That is true, and you can get some sweet shots from the camera (I got a lot I can't show since a big project I'm working on won't be published for a few months). Some people do have an issue hopping around, and you can get great results with really old cameras too, but for those trying to decide what to get some cameras have distinct advantages over others.

Always good reviews. Great job. My thoughts on this camera eetup, which I own as well as an fs7. For me the 4 second 4k 120 fps burst is the only reason I use this camera, but for me, that is huge! Also 2k at 240fps, although SDI is needed for this, so the atomos Shogun. I love this light weight little setup .

The FS5 has a Super35 sensor which is APSC sized. The A7iii has a FF which means that one prime lens becomes two prime lens when you enable the Super35 mode.

A used FS700 with and an external recorder is probably the cheapest way of getting 4K 120fps right now. It's the same sensor as the FS5, and I think FS7 and F55. Nice for music videos.

Yes, but it's not as light, auto focus is slow, no in body image stabilization and the ergonomics.

No way. F55 has a global shutter sensor. F700, FS5 and F55 all have different sensors. I once worked with FS700's footage, it was total crap.

A very nice spec handycam that solves a lot of problems on the budget for everything but low light and super shallow depth of field I think its a great additions to a mirrroless camera. Yes, I think those were some great points. I don't the form factor would work on a gimbal or at least not the smaller ones I'm using but if that's not a necessity I'm sure you can get great results and save money. Hope you're enjoying yours!

nice vid, but one correction. I believe the fs5mii shoots in a slightly different codec that the A7 cameras. A7 camera record in a XVAC S codec, where the FS5 records in a XVAC L codec. Both codecs are 8-bit, but the XVAC L has a little less compression that the XVAC S. Granted though, if you have the atomos, shoot in the ProRes. Better than both of those codecs and higher bit rate.

It really is about time for Sony to update that outdated FS5 to compete with other manufacturers.
Hopefully they will finally allow 4K at 60 FPS in 10bit 4:2:2 internal recording through XAVC-I codec and a proper autofocus with contrast and phase detection.
Internal ProRes RAW recording or at least ProRes would be great, but I guess that won’t happen if we see the already limited specs of the flagship FX9.

wow 3 years since I got my fs5 mk2 and I was wondering why it was so unreasonably long when it came to adjusting focus. the red outline helps a lot but I would twist back and forth over and over and finally like you said the least softest part of the image is what I would aim for on the viewfinder.

I am not making any decisions on anything prosumer until the A7sIII is announced. Luckily I get to use Alexa mini's and RED's on most shoots but would really like to have 60 4K for my personal projects. I really cannot see why Sony would hurt their FS sales by putting 60p 4k in the A7sIII, but they really have no choice at this point to make the A7sIII innovating. The A7III is already as good and much better in my mind than the A7sII. AF on the A7sII is garbage compared to the A7III and the low light is about the same for 1999.00$

A7iii has about the same low light capabilities as the a7sii? No way. Not even close. I own both of those bodies. Until the a7siii comes out, the a7sii is unmatched for low light.

A7III overheats after 42 minutes of continuous shooting (tested at 4k, 30fps, 100Mbs with a Sony 28-135 F4, with XLR Adapter with Shotgun mic, Room temperature 72 degrees) FACT: A7III may be good for filmaking, RUN & Gun, not event videography like the GH5S.

I started with small videos and then moved to more complex one's to see if DVR would be enough and truth is I'm loving it and I'm almost converted. It's amazing the quantity of tutorials of resolve out there.

I'm primarily a Resolve Editor as well, however there is still some things premiere does much better that has me keeping it around. For someone who is getting into the business of selling luts the ability to color match one of my custom luts to another gamma/color science profile is much easier on premiere than resolve. Also you can't dismount any of the panels so you can't only one panel to an external monitor for viewing.
There are more personal things that premiere does better like the ability to change the Canon C200's Raw Gamma and Color science (Resolve can do everything else do), ducking and their built in Filmstro Panel for quick and easy music composition. Also things like creating and exporting your own graphics, remembering your settings (have to change them everytime I open resolve).
But overall I love resolve and it performs far better than premiere for my primary post workflow.

Definitely not a waste of money in my opinion. I still shoot with mine (with shogun inferno). I think it’s the best bang for your buck in that price bracket.

The fs5ii is meant to shoot 1080 not 4K internally. If you want 4K you have to record to the shogun and record ProRes 10bit. I have an a7iii and this camera and the 10bit image you get out of this camera is far far superior than the a7iii image. And I loved the a7iii until I got this camera. I think you missed the mark on this review by focusing on the 4K 8bit image. All the fs5 owners I know never shoot 4K 8bit. That being said, I do think the c200 is superior but it’s much more expensive and cfast cards are much more expensive as well.

@@morrisonmediallc If you shoot 1080 on the FS5ii then it's 10 Bit 422 which is much much better than the 8bit footage on the a7iii. So when recording internally I would never use the 4k on the fs5. But if you record to the inferno then you can bypass all the internal limitations of the camera and record from a raw signal and record to whatever flavor you want. If you record prores raw, then you run into the storage problem, but if you record to Prores 422 HQ or even just 422 then it's 4k 10bit at a much higher data rate than the internal codec. But to answer your question all of these options are much much better than what the a73 produces. This is not a knock on the a73 bc I love it for the price. Last thing, i bought my fs5ii used on ebay with only 15 hrs on it for 3800 with the kit lens. I'm seeing it used for really good prices. I think the fs5ii gets overlooked. It's one of the cheapest cameras that you can record raw out of it. Anyways, best of luck on whatever camera you end up with! Hope this helped.

I feel the same, for the price my a7iii gives me more than enough quality for a lot of situations but as I get bigger clients and more intense shoots the harder it becomes to hide its flaws. I have found inferno + used body + batteries + some small rig needs for 6-7k and that’s almost perfect. I just need it to have one more thing like the a7iii autofocus capability, ibis, low light, etc. I just feel like at that price I would just need one more improvement and I’d be able to swing it. That would be sweet if you could do custom paid upgrades but I doubt it.

I owned the FS5 for three months. I found this thing to have the softest 4k of any Sony camera I own. In fact, my FS700R 4k raw, in my opinion was MUCH better than my FS5,...so I sold it three months later and kept my FS700R. It's my belief that Sony placed a heavier optical low pass filter of that sensor to keep the FS7 as a higher resolving camera. (Just a guess) The FS700R does not have that problem and is as sharp as an FS7. (All three use the exact same sensor)

But with all the evolution from DSLR recently, is it still worth it to buy a camera ? I don't see how they could keep selling those "old" products with worse sensors, worse AF than DLSR. They are cheaper and only lack good dynamic range, 4:2:2 and 10 bit. Which they'll probably get within the next 3 to 5 years because of competition between brands. Seems like a good time to rent and not buy.
