One of the reasons I bought a couple of FS5s instead of FS7s is that with the RAW licence and my Odyssey Q7+ I can get comparable image quality to the FS7. So my choice reflected this as part of the ergonomics/flexibility argument. As you mention, strip it down for gimbal or quick sun n gun stuff, or build it out to be a shoulder mounted beast with IQ as good as the FS7. Best of both worlds. Obviously the cost implications are noticeable bringing them much closer together in terms of overall cost, but for me it was the 'range' of options that made sense. PLUS, like the SD cards argument, I can use the Odyssey with other cameras I own too.
Thanks for another great piece guys. Keep em coming.

It is amazing how complementary the cameras are - they really are a great A-cam/B-cam combination.

Great video, i have used them both extensively, you guys where on point in almost every point.
Regarding audio recording, the FS7 can do 4 diferent audio channels boths XLRs, Mi Shoe and internal mic. With the FS5II you can only input only 2 audio feeds Both of the XLRs or 1 XLR or the MI Shoe.
The raw output its only 12 bits linear so its contradictory kind of ussless, thats a great chat for other time.
They are both great cameras with their strengths and weakness. Best regards.

At least with the MK Is, the FS5 is half the price of the FS7. That's huge if you're working on low budget productions where the amount allocated to cover your gear is low. If you want a complete 4K super 35mm camcorder system that's ready to go out of the box for under $4,000, there are really no other options besides the FS5.

Hi Carl, interesting video, I’ve been considering getting an FS7ii for a while but would you consider it still a good buy in 2018 considering its based on a sensor that was first introduced with the FS700 or F5 back in 2012? Sony also seem to have made big strides in low light ability and autofocus over the last few years and considering Sony seem to bring out new versions of these cameras every 2 years roughly (F5 October 2012, FS7 September 2014, FS7ii November 2016) it seems likely that we will see either a mk3 or a completely new camera in the not too distant future, IBC possibly?

Hi - Thanks so much for presenting this tutorial, it’s really helpful --you are a great teacher. I am a beginner filmmaker - my preferred camera is Sony. For the past year, I have been shooting with the Sony PXW Z90. It’s a great camera, but because it a fixed lens it does not allow very much dept of field. I took the leap and recently purchased the Sony FS5 Mark ll which allows me the freedom to use an interchangeable lens. I understand that the Sony FS is similar to the FS5 ll but there are a few additional add-ons to the Sony FS5 ll. Could you please be kind enough to do a full editorial on how to use the Sony FS5 ll properly? I have spent days searching but have been unsuccessful finding and editorial that offers what I’m sure so many of us need. There are reviews but no “real editorial” from, beginning to end. I called Sony, only to be told (1) it a professional camera, I have to be placed on the call back list - just to speak with a support agent, which is not helpful because there’s so much to be learned. I’m sure it may be asking a lot - but I have run out of options. The world of beginners like me would love you so much!! Take care, stay safe!!

how funny how the guy keep trying to push it to the FS7 even in the power aspect saying that it was easier to put V battery on it ... even in the graphic that showed the victory for the fs5 didn't go all the way to the side of the bar of the little graphic, kind of sad.

If I may, I've got a point you dident mention. FS7 is Netflix-approved, FS5 is not. So you are open to more types of production with the FS7.

That doesn't really make any sense. If a project is green lighted by Netflix, then probably you will have the budget for any type of camera system. If you manage to sell a project to Netflix, it doesn't matter what it was shot on.

@@giorgosiliopoulos8233 exactly! Why do people set their standards for Netflix anyway.

@@giorgosiliopoulos8233Eh, you're talking more from the perspective of a producer/distributor. How many distributors are watching comparison videos of the FS5 & FS7? lol If you're a DP or owner/operator it is crucial that you are aware of deliverable specs for various shows and networks. And saying that "you will have the budget for any type of camera system" is irrelevant. Netflix doesn't approve "any camera system." They have a list of specifically approved cameras. And the FS7 is on that list, hence his comment.

    • @WhenWillILearn

If they are for different users surely the comparison is to demonstrate what kind of user each camera is for

  • @ondohkkang7232

Critically speaking, it is a promotion video for Sony. The comparison between higher model and lower model in same company is useless because the gap between them is huge and many consumers knew already their pros and cons. In my opinion, it's not worth to buy these in 2018 because their sensors are too old. I and many thought that FS5M2 would have a new sensor and better functions such as internal 10bit DCI 4K recording but they just add the colour science of Venice. That's it. External DCI 4k raw recording was already possible in former model FS5M1 so it is not new function. Sony is more concentrating their mirrorless cameras such as A7 series but not very much taking care of indie cinematographers or filmmakers. So, I can tell that A7SMIII won't have 10bit 4K, even 8bit DCI 4K because they have to change the codec, XAVC S to XAVC Intra which is implanted in FS7 only or put it new codec there if they will do.
