    Buy FS5 II at B&H: c5d.at/69h
    I spoke with Claus Pfeifer from Sony about the newly announced FS5 II and the other new cameras. I asked the tough question: What's REALLY new about the FS5 II?

    Sorry but the FS5 II is just a FS5 with Firmware updates. Not necessary to call it MK2. I love the camera and I was really hoping for an update of the the FS5 with more internal options like 10bit 422 in 4k or internal recording in HFR. I am a bit disappointed.

      JogBird not exactly. Apple do at least give a New A series chip, perhaps an upgraded camera, perhaps an extra feature or two (3D touch, Face ID). And... they give 5 years of their old models free iOS software updates.
      Sony? Well they just re-release identical hardware, slap on a 2 sticker and put firmware that could go out to the original owners for free. Instead the devalue the original owners investment and overcomplicate the market. It’s worse.
      Wish this had IBIS and Autofocus from the a7iii/a9.

      with apple at least you get the latest firmware as long as your hardware is able to run it. sony doesnt give anything to older cameras its bad way of doing business in 2018. they should learn from panasonic. every camera should be able to get HLG, S-Log3, S3Gamut.cine, etc. The hardware should be the only limitation. This way they could really outcompete other companies because people would have faith in the ecosystem right now you buy something and you know something will come in 4-6months and drop the re-sale value of your purchase. look what happened with A7R3 and A73. They should put the new improved menu options and new color profiles in older generation. It's a shame you need to buy a next generation just to be able to assign APS-C mode to a custom button. As soon as panasonic get a great at focusing sony will feel the heat.

    Really a catastrophy! I have paid 5.800,- € for my FS5 and I still don't have those upgrades (RAW and HFR). If I want those, I'll have to pay another 1.000,- €. So I get the whole thing for 6.800,- !!!??? Now it's REALLY TIME Sony, to give a HUGE DISCOUNT for those FS5 owners who want to buy the RAW and HFR. Really!

      Johnathon Frumdehood it still a 5,000 color science update. Great or not, selling the same camera for a color update is highway robbery and an insult to original FS5 owners.
      Also I have the c200 didn't cost me that much. Got the kit version of the c200b with 512gb c fast for $7,600

      I think you are missing my point, which I will make one final time. Your looking at it comparing it to two different cameras. While myself, others and many FS5 original owners, see this as a money grab because there is no way for original FS5 owners to get the new color science. And your argument to "just sell the camera" completely misses the point of diminish returns.
      Even if one was to sell their original FS5, you won't get the full value back much less match the value of the new FS5. So if you are someone who spent 6,000+ when the original came out. Now you have to sell, purchase the new camera and take a loss, all for a color science update. That's the point we are trying to make to you.
      Also your statements on the C200B is very flawed as it's absolutely NOT a stripped down version. And your comparison to the Scarlet MX is poor as well. A better comparison would be someone using the Basic Vmount Extension compared to the XLR extension, because just having the brain of the Scarlet MX makes it inoperable, While the C200B is completely usable even if you didn't get the other features.
      I'll admit I probably didn't word what my C200B came with, which was everything minus the EVF, and I'll apologies for that. But to say the C200B is a stripped down version is the full kit is a poor assumption as it's just as good as the full kit if you have everything besides the EVF, which I purposely choose because I do not like the EVF and it makes it far easier to balance on gimbals.
      EDIT: Also people like myself probably wouldn't be as upset or disappointed had they just did one thing that owners have been asking them for years, which is to update the sensor in these FS Lines. With the Venice, one would expect to have the sensor brought down, but they didn't. So not only are they giving you basically no upgraded features (when you've already paid for the raw previously) besides color science, Sony also doesn't address the main complaint people have with these cameras (also their horrible menu structure, ergonomics ect) which is the sensors in these FS line of cameras are so old that their Alpha line cameras like the a6300 are smoking them in IQ and Low light.
      So Is it a steal? Yes....for Sony. It's damn near highway robbery.

      It might not just be firmware updates. Color science is 50% hardware and 50% software, so it's possible they made some small changes. But more than likely, it was mostly a software fix.

    • @overnightclassic2
      @overnightclassic2 6 років тому +1

      There's a lot of things that control color science and it's not all software. So there is probably a small hardware change too. Yes you can fix color science issues with software, but only to a point.

    Man, there are a lot of people complaining here, I would love to get this camera and I don't have a fs5 previously, the fact that it can to do those high frame rates is awesome. And if you care so much about the other stuff just buy an fs7, that's an amazing camera, I would happily use the fs5 for gigs until I could save up for a fs7.

      The Dreamers post on every other new camera that isnt the "perfect camera". Gets tiring after a while. Kinda bet most of them don't even own a professional camera. I'm with you Javier, I have an old EX1R that has been good but I can't wait to get the FS5MII! I could compare it to other Cinema cameras coming out, but its small, portable, has HDR, HFR, alright codec, 10 bit 422 HD, S-Log 2/3, wi-fi/NFC, weighs less than most still cameras, good selection of affordable lenses, RAW (externally recorded) capabilities, MI shoe, the new ND filter, the old but very reliable BP-U batteries, and finally some good colors from a sony camera. Lol you have all these people complaining but all I can do is laugh at them talking while I am buying a professional light weight camera and looking forward to the footage I am going to shoot with it! Wish I could afford a FS7MII but this is the next best thing.

    • @dalestokes2789
      @dalestokes2789 6 років тому

      Unfortunately thats the problem otherwise I would go with a C200, though at that price point and for what I do, I would probably still stick with Sony and get a couple Z280s. I do a lot of Educational lectures in a studio environ, also no real need for the RAW external recorder since I export to 720 anyway lol. But the 10 bit 422 HD will be nice as well as the 4k for editing. I wish I had the money for both, that really would be a nice combo!

    • @dalestokes2789
      @dalestokes2789 6 років тому

      It really is which is why its great. The EX1r was a great camera, something even most (Sony) armchair critics still compare most modern cameras too. The fact that they gave its successor the XAVC-I codec + 4k + fujinon lense and a whole host of other features...Only thing that holds me back is the $7000 price tag. I need two cameras, and have a top limit of 10k. For that limit, I can get a stripped down cinema camera and the little brother, the Z190, or its predecessor the Z150. So many good cameras, so little money lol, the problem of every videographer!

      maybe it's because the pro market is shrinking and prosumers have many low cost option. to me it seems like the best option is to buy 3 flagship APS-C mirrorless and change them whenever they release a new model every 2 years because that's where they find the most sales volume and seem to put the best features

    Should have just added a letter like 'FS5 X' or something to denote a slight change, it's not a Mark II and I won't be upgrading. I've owned the FS5 for a couple of years and it's my workhorse camera, I regularly rent the FS7 on clients request and still prefer the FS5, it's been a brilliant piece of kit, but for this to be a MKII it would need to actually improve on the current camera and address the small issues with the Mark I, namely:
    * An EVF which doesn't flip up 90 degrees when you use as a stabilizing point of contact e.g a stiffer internal screw
    * a loupe for the LCD like the one Zacuto make for the MK I or Sony make for the FS7
    * an IBIS sensor would be a godsend
    * Super slo mo in full HD up to 240 fps
    * Full frame sensor with S35mm crop option
    * A7S ii low light capability
    * a menu system designed for a human being
    * no hard reset switching between HD and 4K and the option to assign a button to do this
    * 2020-standard facial tracking autofocus for single shooters that are the core market for this camera
    * improved internal sound capture via the XLR's - the current one isn't the best
    * the raw output that the Mark I can already do if you pay extra.
    What I just described is an A7iii - their 'prosumer' A-series - in a slightly improved FS5 body with a couple of things they have already developed like raw output and HFR. That would for me constitute a next generation 'Mark II' and it's all do-able with zero extra development.
    But I get the feeling Sony are no longer racing ahead to give us amazing updates every year and have fallen in to the trap Canon did where they drip-feed improvements so as not to cannibalize sales of their other cameras. That tactic put Canon 5 years behind Sony because they were worried about losing DSLR and cinema camera sales by releasing a decent mirrorless so people left Canon in droves for the A7 series. Here I am now looking outside of Sony for a real upgrade to the FS5 and I bet I'm not the only one.

  • @firthfilms
    @firthfilms 6 років тому

    Original FS5 w/ Odyssey 7Q+ literally does ALL of these things. The only change to the Mark II is the standard color science and the included updates. (Maybe it will have better S-Log ISO??). Frankly the color science updates should have been a firmware update for the first FS5, especially considering they have the same sensor. If the point is only that this camera is cheaper then the last, yeah great, why? There are remarkably few things that qualify it as a Mark II. Considering the image and usability issues of the first FS5 (even when recording on a O7Q+), one would have assumed they would at least do some work on the sensor, ergonomics, screen, peaking, etc. They didn't listen to the market at all, this was just a lazy release. Given the original FS5 has steadily dropped in price over the last two years, the price point of the Mark II only proves it. Over the next couple years the Mark II will age terribly, Sony seems to be assuming the FS5 series will remain the best specs at this price point - what, 4+ years later? We bought the FS5 for a reason, not because it was cheaper then the FS7 (which is what they are assuming). The FS5 is a unique camera at this price, no doubt: transmits RAW and high speed in a size that fits on a gimbal, the FS7 has trouble doing that because of the RAW extension. Sony hasn't given us an improved camera to upgrade too. Thank god I didn't invest in Sony glass. I don't need another FS5, I'll be buying a different camera.

      The ursa mini pro arguably looks better than the C200 and the EVA1.

    • @overnightclassic2
      @overnightclassic2 6 років тому +1

      "native lens compatibility?" The Ursa Mini Pro has interchangeable PL, EF, B4, and Nikon mounts. And they're all very cheap too and user interchangeable. On top of that the Ursa Mini Pro has BETTER ergonomics for everyday shooting and handheld use. It's heavier, but again, how do you shoulder mount a c200 and still use the viewfinder? Ridiculous that the camera like the c200 comes with a viewfinder you can barely use in a lot of shooting configurations.
      On top of that Canon cinema cameras are far from an ergonomic masterpiece. Did you happen to notice the C200 is not approved for netflix production? That's because Canon secretly crippled it in a way that deliberately goes against netflix specifications so you have to use their more expensive cameras.

    • @overnightclassic2
      @overnightclassic2 6 років тому +1

      I actually do work in VFX and I work on big netflix shows every day. I do own two ursa mini Pro's purchased at half price through a Blackmagic employee discount (I'm not an employee of blackmagic but I have connections with the company).
      And NATIVE mount technically just means that the mount is not adapted and is attached to the camera directly. Technically RED cameras are considered to be native EF mount cameras despite featuring a so-called "reverse-engineered" mount.
      Dual Pixel autofocus is amazing and to me the only feature that makes Canon cameras worth it. For bigger production, 90% of the time it's a useless feature when you have a dedicated focus puller. However that's not the real issue. The lack of timecode is a serious issue.
      And the second issue is you called it an Ergonomic masterpiece. Sure it's a great ergonomic camera and very light, but you never answered my question. How do you use the "amazing" viewfinder when the camera is shoulder mounted? And for that matter, how many scenarios is the EVF even useful given it's placement? And does it feature false-color like the EVF on the Ursa Mini Pro and is it a 1080p image? The Ursa Mini Pro EVF is so good it's sadly better than a lot of EVF's made by experienced EVF manufacturers like Zacuto. Very sad.

    • @overnightclassic2
      @overnightclassic2 6 років тому +1

      If you wondered, the reason Blackmagic cameras are so "big" is the same reason the Alexa is that much larger than a RED camera. Blackmagic uses dual-gain sensors exactly like the AlevIII found in the Arri range of cameras and they get very hot. If you open up an ursa mini pro, 80-90% of the internals of the camera is just a very large metal heatsink and a fan, just like you find on the Alexa SXT. If they used another type of sensor it would likely be a much smaller camera, but that is the main reason Blackmagic is able to produce a high-dynamic range sensor at an affordable price point. Canon has to spread their sensor across multiple camera bodies and market segment their cameras in order to produce the C200 at the price-point that it is. Notice that outside of the dual-pixel autofocus, the Ursa Mini Pro has significantly more features. Dual SD and Cfast card slots. 1080p 120fps in 12-bit lossless raw (which is so much more usable of an image than the C200 slow motion) and 4.6K 60fps 12-bit lossless. False color display for exposure too in both the in-camera monitor and the EVF.
      If you ever were at NAB last year, they showed the HBO camera test between all the top cameras of the different camera manufacturers. The Ursa Mini 4.6k was incredible in that it held up with every camera that was there. Except for the moire test (which the camera did lose badly due to no OLPF) the camera was not a clear loser in any category, even surprisingly beating the C700 in and varicam 35 in a lot of areas. Most people thought the C700 was the LAST PLACE camera and that's shocking given it's Canon's best camera.
      Blackmagic is new to the camera market and that's why their cameras while very good don't completely crush the c200 in EVERY area yet. I don't think they'll ever attempt autofocus, but in terms of other aspects they have nailed so many things and they are only getting better and better to the point that I would guess their next camera release will be well ahead of every other camera in the sub 10K market. Even the Pocket 4K is likely better than almost any camera under $5K when it comes to features and image quality balance. Kinefinity is also slowly making incredible cameras too but their prices are getting a little more than what they used to be. But they do seem to be innovating a lot.

    • @overnightclassic2
      @overnightclassic2 6 років тому +1

      Why would I own 7? And I use windows computers. I don't think there are too many people in VFX who use Mac anymore because they don't have the best performance. Back when Apple actually built serious workstations people did use them more, but even then windows or linux was still more popular. Yes the C200 does have an LCD and an EVF, but you cannot reposition the EVF wherever you want.
      Did you watch the HBO camera test at NAB? The C700 was the clear last place camera, which is shocking because the Ursa Mini 4.6K looked better. And the C200 cannot be better than the C700 so how exactly is the C200 a better image than the Ursa Mini Pro?

Some interesting stuff i.e. colour science, which I'm pleased to hear about (if it works okay). Would be great if they included the new Apple Prores. I'm still editing clips made with my already-sold FS5, and I'm still hating myself for the money waste.
    And this upgrade makes really no sense. You buy what is supposed to be a professional camera with an amazing compact design just to realize that to get professional picture quality you need to buy an external recorder that will double the size, the weight and kill the ergonomic.

    Seems much too expensive and limited in its capabilities compared to what Blackmagic is offering with the BMPCC 4K at 1/6 the cost. Sony will need to dramatically step up their game if they want to compete. It's a real shame too for those of us who've already invested in Sony cameras and lenses. I don't want to sell everything just to move over to the MFT format, but I may.
    If the FS5 II fails, it'd be well worth it for Sony to consider bringing features previously offered only in their high-end cameras--and then some--into the prosumer mirrorless range. That's the natural progression of technology anyway, as we've continuously seen over the years. Now that the FS5 model is rather long in the tooth, and because the A7III was just released, it only makes sense for Sony to go head to head with the BMPCC 4K in a new APS-C camera...like an A6700.
    In a price range of between $1,300 and $1,800, what could they offer? Well in addition to improved IBIS, autofocus, ISO and dynamic range, here are my dream features:
    4K DCI (4096 x 2160) 24 to 120fps, and full 1080p 24 to 240fps. (Internal recording.)
    12-bit RAW at 270 MB/s or higher. (That's *_Megabytes_* per second by the way).
    CinemaDNG Raw/Raw 3:1/Raw 4:1 and ProRes 422 options.
    1 x CFast Card Slot and 1 x SDXC UHS-II Card Slot
    USB-C with RAW external recording capabilities.
    Unlimited internal recording to CFast & SDXC cards. (Limited only by memory capacity.)
    Fully articulating screen.
    Brighter LCD at 450cd/m2 or higher for outdoor use. (Does not dim in 4K or in higher FPS modes. An attachable Sun Shade would be a plus.)
    Greatly extended battery life. (Possibly using the new Z-Series batteries.)
    No overheating.
    Too much to ask for in a mirrorless camera under $2K? Perhaps, but seeing that Blackmagic is pulling most of this off...perhaps not.

    Adopting the Canon approach to new cameras.... Give very little over and above what you had already. The colour science is evolution not a sales gimmick, I'd of liked to of seen a better viewfinder, IBIS & 4K 60P RAW to XQD cards with everything else going through the SD card, even the guy Nino was interviewing sounded unconvincing.

      I dont think they can because of the heat of a full-frame sensor, it's easier on a MFT look how big the GH5 is compared to the sensor. The FS5 has APS-C sensor and even as big as it is can't do 4K60 internal. Maybe A7S3 can do it external who knows..

      Hushed Tones The Micro Four thirds sensor is why the GH5 isn’t $3200 like the A7riii. The body of the GH5 is larger than the Sony a7 bodies but has a much much smaller sensor

      its a shit camera, the fs7 is a much better buy than this crap, I would even say the fs700 raw package is better than the fs5. Its a overpriced hunk of garbage that nobody likes, ive used this for one job and wont be using it again. Felt like i was using a bigger bodied a6300/a6500. When you have the EVA1 or the c200 and even the fs7 which is not a huge price difference if you are getting the fs5. Fs5 is priced like the ursa mini pro and cant even do 4k 50/60p.

      Other than being able to shoot raw there aren't many benefits of the BMPC over the GH5s. GH5s shoots at a higher bit rate in 4K too.

    • @digwillhachi
      @digwillhachi 6 років тому

      but the BMPC shoots 12bit raw right? It also shoots 422 pro res. The GH5s does neither and its twice the price.

    • @jmann316
      @jmann316 6 років тому

      It shoots 10 bit 422 ProRes externally & at a higher bit rate. Like I said, only the raw option is significantly better, sure it'd be nice to shoot ProRes internally but it's not a deal breaker. Also the raw files will be cinema DNG files which from my understanding most people dislike working with.

    • @digwillhachi
      @digwillhachi 6 років тому

      sorry I don't get it, it shoots pro res and raw 3:1 and 4:1 + cdng all internally. They may well add prores RAW later as well.

    • @WegnerJacobsen
      @WegnerJacobsen 6 років тому

      Jamie Tannock
      Nope. You're wrong.
      BMPCC 4K (internal): 270 MB/s 12-bit RAW - CinemaDNG
      BMPCC 4K (internal): 110 MB/s 10-bit 4:2:2 ProRes 422 HQ
      GH5S (external): 503 Mbps 10-bit 4:2:2 ProRes 422 HQ
      270 MB/s = 2160 Mbps
      110 MB/s = 880 Mbps
      Also, CinemaDNG is amazing.
