@@Walprya They were pretty tough. I read one review that made a case for it being great, but acknowledged being a Superman enthusiast. A second or third film would have gone a long way to addressing much of the criticism. Routh's interpretation is still liked today as evident by the reception of his portrayal on the CW.
Problem is that they got a guy who kind of looked like Reeve and sounded almost exactly like him at times, but he couldn't play the role as good as Reeve. Roth was like a robot with no emotion. Reeve will always be Superman. Tom Welling would have been a better choice. Especially since Reeve actually liked him a lot, and Smallville was such a big hit.
@Thomas Fleig I think Routh has shown since he's been apart of the Arrowverse that he can play charismatic just fine. This movie was just poorly written at times. He was a good Superman but a better Clark Kent. Also Welling was considered for the role in this film but turned it down because of his commitments to Smallville (which made it difficult for him to commit to a film this big) and his aversion to putting on the suit. Henry Cavill was also considered for this film believe it or not.
Yeah, and if you want both you have to watch Christopher Reeve who was both. Could you imagine if Reeve could have played Superman today, with modern special effects.
This Superman is actually much more powerful than the one in MoS (this is a veteran Silver Age portrayal of Superman whereas the version Henry plays in MoS is more adolescent and new to his powers).
@@dstacyify Yeah, but he means that Man of Steel tends to emphasize his power, while the Donner movies and Returns tend to emphasize his heart (personally I'm with the second route, but that may be just me).
One of the great parts about this movie is that they chose a very likable actor to play Richard, so you empathize with Lois when she says that he's a good man. Fine casting director.
Lois chose Richard because of his Superman qualities that she missed. He is kind and courteous. Everyone likes him and doesn't let it go to his head. And wait for it......................he flies...by means of an airplane.
I've said it, Returns fails because it came at a time where people were looking for actions. Remember, we had the Xmen movies, Raimi's Spidey ( the first 2), Blade, Batman Begins, etc. So people expected SR to be full of fight scenes, knowing all the superpowers Superman has. Seeing Superman beaten by some normal guys were awful to many fans. But when you look closely, this movie is so far the best Superman movie we've had since Reeve's first Superman movie. It has love, emotions, hope, charisma, and some fantastic scenes. To me, its way better than Man of Steel. It portrayed Superman's values so well.
An even bigger problem with it was that it basically reused the exact plot of the first movie, so a lot of people had the same problem with it they have with "The Force Awakens" (which also used the plot of the first "Star Wars" movie) -- too unoriginal.
@@Hibernicus1968 Superman returns payed homage to Superman The Movie, not reused it. It payed homage to it by using similar dialogue, characters, situations, and imagery admist new plot elements. As Superman Returns serves as a homage sequel to the motion pictures Superman: The Movie, and Superman 2 whilst ignoring the events of Superman 3, and Superman 4: The Quest For Peace.
@@guyhaskins3829 Sorry, no, it straight up recycled the plot from "Superman: The Movie" -- Lex Luthor hatches a plot to secure ownership of vast amounts of land (and therefore wealth), but the means of his doing so will kill millions. He realizes Superman will stop him, so he tries to kill Superman using Kryptonite. Fortunately, Superman is rescued by a human, and goes on to foil the plot and save millions of lives. Roll credits. It's the same plot. This was why the movie underperformed: it wasn't original enough.
The problem was that it was basically a rehash of "Superman: the Movie." It used the exact same basic plot: Luthor tries to acquire massive wealth by engineering a geological catastophe that will leave him in possession of vast amounts of prime real estate; Superman tries to stop him, but Luthor disables him with kryptonite; Superman is saved by an ordinary human, stops Luthor, cue triumphant music, roll end credits. While a very well made movie, it didn't really take the audience anywhere new, and that's what killed it.

This scene is one of my favorites in the movie, the music is beautiful and the part at 3:50 where Lois and Superman almost kissed is romantic and sad at the same time.
It's never the powers that were the reason Lois loved Superman, It's what he stood for that greatly admired. Even without his powers, Clark would've spared no effort to save as much as he can. The powers never defined Superman, it's the man that is really is Superman.
I wondered about this but that's actually not true from my search. In most versions, Lois loved Superman before knowing he was Clark Kent. She didn't love Clark because he was a dorky, bumbling, unconfident guy. So yes, I would say she loved Superman mostly because of his abilities.
Whether you prefer Brandon Routh or Henry Cavill's take on the character one thing is pretty clear with how they were both basically forced out of the role, WB really doesn't know what do with Superman. Both Brandon and Henry were passionate about the role and turned in fantastic interpretations of Superman. Brandon's was an awesome Sliver Age/Post Crisis Superman while Henry Cavill was perfect for the New 52 type of Superman. Yet neither of them got the chance to really reach the full potential of the role because for reason when it comes to Superman WB just gets really skittish.
Lois: "The world doesn't need a savior... and neither do I." Superman: "You needed one on that airliner bitch! If not for me, you'd be hamburger!" LOL!!
At 0:30 Listen as the music starts you hear the subdued rattling of the Daily Planet's globe. Does anyone else find this moving? Amazing sound direction.
Loved this sequence. I love how the music evokes the original love theme of Can You Read My Mind. Brandon Routh was excellent as Superman. I think the movie tried maybe a bit too hard to mimic the feel of the original movies; it didn't have to - just let it evolve on its own. Still, I would have loved to have seen a sequel (or two).
I’m one of the few that loved this movie. Routh channeled Reeve. Which is what I was hoping that he would do. The Richard Donner presence was felt all over this film. It had heart, and emotional substance. Unlike the Zack Snyder films. This film deserved a sequel IMHO. Instead we got the digital mess that was Man of Steel. God bless Christopher Reeve. We miss you.
There is a grief in this movie that can't be denied. He knew Krypton had exploded but returning to it's corpse would have to hit him hard. "it was a graveyard" - he knows for certain, now, that he is the last of his kind. (there is no Kara El in this version) His romance with Lois is over, she belongs to another. His library of crystals, including, all he had left of his father's voice is gone, perhaps forever. He's so terribly isolated. Yet, he has his son... at the very end, the blood line of Krypton is carried on... by a small boy. This is my favorite Superman movie.
It’s not better, just different. If you don’t watch MoS looking for an homage to Christopher Reeve, and look at it for what it is (a retelling of the Superman story, written for the ADD generation), you’ll enjoy it much better. Now, I LOVE Brandon as Superman, but everything about this Lois, from her storyline to the way the actress portrayed her, is not good. She is what ruins this movie for me.
I agree it got superman’s character right and shows how he’s always meant to be a symbol and a beacon of hope. He’s not meant to be a murderer or some Jesus figure like in man of steel and Batman v superman they have improved with superman though they didn’t make him kill anyone in the Snyder cut but he’s way too intimidating for superman when he’s supposed to be friendly and make the atmosphere feel safe when your around him.
Noticed that she almost said fiancee but said Richard instead? This proves that she's just not that into him which is sad but Lois couldn't risk someone finding out that she had Superman's kid.
She just doesn't know how to refer to him. You're right, she's not comfortable with it. Superman was the great love of her life, but she knows Richard is the sensible choice.
Too bad we'll never get a 2nd movie dealing with Richard finding out that Lois never loved him she settled for him that her heart & soul belong to only the man of steel. He finds himself confiding in Clark about his relationship with Lois never knowing that he is sharing his personal thoughts with Superman the one who has captured his fiancee's heart. Then Richard notices that Jason looks more like Superman than him he is conflicted if he should confront Lois if Jason is his son.
The one thing that bothers me about this movie is that she had never flown with him before this? So what was heir relationship previously? They just had a one night stand or something? Which would be out of character for Superman.
This movie got so much crap but I liked it a lot, I saw it in the theaters and was amazed buy the effects and now all these years later they still look really good for 2006. I wish Brandon would have had another shot at the lead he was really good.
Scenes like this one which MOS doesn't have is one of the reason why my heart didn't really soften up to MOS. Call me hopeless romantic but oh well....
Kinda agree. I love MoS but this is the single thing I would change. The romance between clark and lois isn't romantic enough. It's too "modern" and physical and quick.

Hollywood. This was by far the perfect sequel to Reeve’s Superman. Why did they have to ruin it with those awful reboots.
Especially when the Superman Returns sequels were going to be more action packed.
@@guyhaskins3829 I also heard a rumor that Nolan's batman was going to show up or something like that.
Underrated movie. I love anything DC and have seen every Superman movie ever made. Brandon nails it. It's a shame they couldn't give him another real shot.
This movie was so underrated it was heartbreaking when people made jokes about it. Brandon was the perfect pick to continue Christopher Reeves legacy
4:25 I love the moment when he rises off the rooftop and then when he's clear of her, he focuses upward and really starts to move... whoosh! You can hear his cape! That movement just seems... well, "realistic" to me. God, I wish I could fly.
i had the same thoughts- the way his flying was filmed was spectacular and felt so real. the sound effects are perfect
@@ranchump Yes, it was very realistic, and they didn't overdo the sound effects. It was perfect.
“I forgot how warm you are” - this really gets to me every time I watch this, tears stream down my face 😪❤️
It’s all of the solar energy stored up in his body.
@@jerodbrown7339 ah I see u are cultured man👍
@@GregKhar-NU-Metalhead2000 That comment was not really necessary here. I think he was being serious. Superman's body is different than humans (duh!) and it's full of energy.
LEAN OVER 40 POR MEN.
You are an AMAZING HUMAN BEING. Thanks GOD people like you really EXIST. Sincerely It's a true JOY to find you. In this World and its HORRORS that's a miracle.
I wish you the BEST of LUCK ever!!
Take care.
John Ottman. Take a bow. His score for Superman Returns is one of the best in the genre. I've grown to really appreciate this film. It is quite wonderful.
This Superman made me fall in love with Superman
I love his balance between lonely alien and optimistic human
It's why this is the best film Superman.
I liked this scene. It brought so much depth of feeling
The music is great.
its called a score but yes it is good
@@katk426 And a score is another term for music 🤷
@Kladian Actually, never was big on music as so many in my life are. Even when traveling alone, no damn music playing in my car.
Lois: “He takes me up all the time”
Superman: “Not like this”
The rizz is strong with the Kryptonian
“So will I see you around?” “I’m always around!”
*Superman Returns has a sequel*
Can't believe I'd say this but.. thank you CW. I'm sure I'm not the only one who wanted this Superman to *..Return*
This scene was peaceful
What a true love 🤍 Superman
"I am always around." I just wish he would come back as Superman again in cinema release. He's the worthy successor to Christopher Reeve.
This is easily the most beautiful scene that I have watched in any superhero movie. Wow.
I know I'm in the minority but in my humble opinion this was one of the BEST Superman films. Not a lot of bang, pow, smash, but a Superman film for grown up ADULTS who can relate to these feelings, a long-lost love who's in the past, mixed with the superhero fantasy element.
It's a shame this cast, this story, wasn't allowed to carry on.
Just another case of DC shooting themselves in the foot yet again.
It never, ever fails.
Grh7 britton. I share every word of your comment.
I tell you : other case of DC shooting themselves in the foot once again : JAMES GUNN, the new DC movies director DUMPED Rob pattison for upcoming BATMAN movies, after it has grossed 750 MILLIONS around the world!!
Are they MENTALLY RETARDED ?
I wish you the BEST of LUCK ever!!
Take care.
That's a really good point I never thought about. Very well said!
I wondered about this but that's actually not true from my search. In most versions, Lois loved Superman before knowing he was Clark Kent. She didn't love Clark because he was a dorky, bumbling, unconfident guy. So yes, I would say she loved Superman mostly because of his abilities.
@@Ghostrider-ul7xn Well I never mentioned and neither have they.
@@coletrain583 you did say Lois loved Superman not for the powers but for what he stood for. I was pointing out that it was incorrect
not true. she loves him for power. women love power and wealth.
Lois: "The world doesn't need a savior... and neither do I."
Superman: "You needed one on that airliner bitch! If not for me, you'd be hamburger!" LOL!!
😂😂😂👏👏 why doesn't this have more likes
Filling in for Christopher Reeve is beyond hard. Props to Brandon
The world needs Superman. This scene is so beautiful I love it.
Say what you will about Bryan Singer as a person or Lex Luthor's silly plan, but, Jesus, this entire sequence is achingly beautiful.
I just love this song, especially at the time 3:00 onward with the fly up with Lois, parallel with a building. Absolutely beautiful.
I didn’t care about Superman as a character until this movie, I had a dream about this scene it was so powerful
At 0:30 Listen as the music starts you hear the subdued rattling of the Daily Planet's globe. Does anyone else find this moving? Amazing sound direction.
Wonderful story and graphics..powerful elegant Appearances of Superman.
I’d say Brandon nailed Superman spot on!! Better than man of steel
I love the colours of this film. It's so warm.
In every Superman movie, I waited for them to be together with their song "Can You read my mind". So touching.
Loved him as superman
This scene perfectly encapsulates the character of Superman 🙌🏻
what i like about this movie is the heart of it and him saying "I'M ALWAYS AROUND" hits me everytime.
I love how gentle Superman is in this scene. He has to be so careful not to hurt her. In constant control of his powers. A master of self control.
The flying sequences in Superman Returns were exquisite. And "Can you read my mind" without those sappy lyrics was a thing of beauty.
This is a clear painful reminder of thoes that give ur heart to someone that don't give u theirs, I think must of us been there
The feels, the beautiful shots and music 💖✨👏👏👏
Singers best film by a country mile. A great Superman movie and massively under rated imo.
Why is routh not Superman anymore? He’s literally perfect
Being brandon first job as an actor he did a phenomenal job
Superman: "You wrote that the world doesn't need a savior but everyday I here people crying for one"
Oh!! My heart.
i would love to be able to fly to be that free and be able to just fly up in the sky and be that far away for a while would be awesome
Superman, in Any Form or Era,Will Always Love Lois Lane
I’m one of the few that loved this movie. Routh channeled Reeve. Which is what I was hoping that he would do. The Richard Donner presence was felt all over this film. It had heart, and emotional substance. Unlike the Zack Snyder films. This film deserved a sequel IMHO. Instead we got the digital mess that was Man of Steel. God bless Christopher Reeve. We miss you.
Just watched this movie again... I really like this movie
And just like a fine wine this movie is fantastic
It wasn't a perfect movie, but a heck of a lot better than Man of Steele...
Your so stupid
@@mysteriousvigilante You're*
It’s not better, just different. If you don’t watch MoS looking for an homage to Christopher Reeve, and look at it for what it is (a retelling of the Superman story, written for the ADD generation), you’ll enjoy it much better. Now, I LOVE Brandon as Superman, but everything about this Lois, from her storyline to the way the actress portrayed her, is not good. She is what ruins this movie for me.
Nah👎👎👎. Man of Steel is better
THEremiXFACTOR ooo I see you with your Vertigo profile picture:)
Catspaw Then Superman throws him into the sun
The one thing that bothers me about this movie is that she had never flown with him before this? So what was heir relationship previously? They just had a one night stand or something? Which would be out of character for Superman.
this part is so peaceful and magical
This movie got so much crap but I liked it a lot, I saw it in the theaters and was amazed buy the effects and now all these years later they still look really good for 2006. I wish Brandon would have had another shot at the lead he was really good.
His the superman that I love. Rather than others
I forgot how warm you are....
MOS was a attempt at making superman emo
@@leejee88 Oh god, shut up. MOS went right over your empty head.
@@andrewvincent7299 nah im not as dumb as you are stop projecting.MOS had nada to offer
@@rikudoubapeck Amy's version of Lois is robotic. I get no feeling from her whatsoever. I've never seen a more bland portrayal.
I forgot how phenomenal the music of this music was
From 2:37 I just noticed a small snippet of the original theme. I know it plays out at the end but still.
Awesome movie
3:00 Thank you, John Williams and John Ottman. The most beautiful line in a superhero theme ever
so many emotional awesome scenes...I love this movie! Hits you harder then todays movies.
Brandon Routh was great a sSuperman. Such a coll underrated movie. Maybe thay could make Kingdom Come with him.
This movie was a masterpiece of emotions. I am glad that there is no sequel to it, so there will be only one superman returns.
Far and away the best Superman and movie..excellence !!
