I know a guy who did it by accident once. When attending conventions under one of his writing pseudonyms, he'd just put on a pair of lensless glasses and a poker visor and that fooled people who'd known him for years. He wasn't trying to, just making a token effort to distinguish who he 'was' at the time.
1:44 - 2:10 is one of the most subtle, understated and amazing bits of acting in history. THIS is why the "glasses disguise" works. Because it's not about the "glasses". When he's Superman, he's straight backed and confident. When he's Clark Kent, he's hunched over, unsure of himself and stutters and mumbles. Genius. Chris was truly out of this world and still sorely missed.

I like how there's this moment where he feels like he's really _in_ with her, because of his Superman date. He knows he's made an impression on her, and at first he's excited, until he looks down at his glasses and realizes that while Superman may be the man of Lois's dreams, Clark Kent is nobody to her. He's visibly distraught and frustrated at this realization, and resolves to tell her the truth, because he really wants to seal the deal. But he can't, he can't risk that secret getting out. All of that communicated through body language alone. I adore this sort of stuff, you'd be hard-pressed to see such expertly delivered visual storytelling like this in a modern film.
There's also the fact that when he says "Lois, I'm really..." He's really _who?_ He hasn't been given the name of Superman at that point. (I don't think he even introduced himself as "Kal-el" when telling Lois about coming from Krypton, did he?)
It's the supreme use of the visual medium of cinema and television. Whereas a book can give you insight into the mental world of the characters, good films and film makers tell a story with the lens, this is especially powerful when the dialogue doesn't match the thoughts of the characters. I Claudius is a supreme example of this. I was watching a Columbo the other day, the murderer, George Hamilton, is smooth and slick and talks to Columbo with the easy confidence and grace of a successful television host, but when Columbo looks away, his easy smile fades and his face hardens and his eyes narrow. Without a word of dialogue, you see the real man behind the mask. Done well, it's the strength of cinema, it's rarely done at all.
Luthor makes that same point in Superman All Star. He points out that Lois is so infatuated with Superman, she fails to see the Clark Kents of the world. Ofcourse, we all know it's meant to be an ironic joke, because as the viewers we know that Clark IS Superman, but Luthor doesn't know that. And his point is still valid. Lois sees Superman and falls in love with him, even though she knows she can never have a normal relationship with him. She chooses to pursue that dream anyway and ignores all the 'Clark Kents' of the world that come in and out of her life in the meantime, because none of them can measure up to the impossible standard set by Superman. Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman also raises this point several times on the show, but it was done best when, after Lois had just found out his secret, Clark points out that 'Clark is who he is, Superman is just what he can do'. Lois has fallen in love with Superman and is pissed at Clark for keeping that secret from her, but fails to acknowledge that Clark was already there the entire time. She just had her sights set on something better. How can a normal man ever hope to live up to the likes of a incorruptible being with godlike powers? Answer: You can't. It's an unfair standard to set. He trapped both the woman of his dreams and himself in a love triangle that can never work out well, unless he breaks it by telling her the truth, but in so doing he has to live with the knowledge that Lois will spend the rest of her life being in danger because of her relationship to him, living in constant worry that a villain might get lucky some day and end her life. It's compelling because it's tragically bittersweet.
I feel like there's plenty of examples of acting on that level in modern film. I'm not at all a film buff so giving an example past Better Caul Saul would be tough personally, but in all the youtube clips I see form different shows and movies, it really doesn't seem like acting like that is more than uncommon. Definitely admirable and not something a ton of people can do, but plenty of the current actors of today can do that. I think it's a trend we see less bc of modern attention span than capabilities tho. People aren't always down to watch that level of performance bc it's more subtle and less action packed. Just my 2 cents
This scene is why Christopher Reeve is the gold standard for Superman. He changed his expression, his voice, and his height in a matter of seconds. Awesome.
Even though I know he's one guy, when he takes his glasses off and adjusts his posture, he honestly feels like a completely different person. Like you said, his voice and his body language make him unrecognizable.

Agreed. The fact that he acts completely different when he's Clark Kent is absolutely vital to him not being recognized. If he acted exactly the same except with glasses, the people around would just seem really stupid when they don't notice him. So far, Christopher Reeve is the only actor in the movies who performed this aspect of the character. Unfortunately, Henry Cavill in BvS fell into this trap and as a result, that plot hole was created. At least Brandon Routh tried to play Clark differently.
i read that director richard donner told christipher reeve that he wanted him to act as if he was acting as superman playing like he was clark kent ; and reeeve pulls it off like a pro
I understand why people get frustrated why people can’t put 2 and 2 together when it comes to Superman and Clark Kent... but when I show them this movie it’s a completely different ballgame idk why they never do it. I like the new tv show Superman watching the first 2 episodes and watching him “reveal” he was Superman by taking glasses off was kind of laughable. I mean it’s not just the fucking glasses. It’s so much more to play Superman. His fucking face is showing for Christ’s sake. Clark Kent and Superman are two completely different characters and nobody mastered it right better than reeve.

My only problem with him was he wasn’t buff enough for me lol I feel reeve was in such amazing body shape. Say what you will about the Supergirl tv show, but they kinda hit it right on the head making a point of bringing up in the first episode that Clark and Kara’s glasses disguise works so well because no one ever really notices either of them
I was watching the Superman performance and thought "there's no way she wouldn't recognise that smile on Clark, surely". And then he smiles as Clark and *he's got a different smile!*

The change in demeanor is so wild that even without him saying something you can instantly feel the difference. The distinction Christopher puts between Clark and Superman is so unique, literally every other version of Superman/Clark I've seen certain traits of Superman bleed into the Clark persona or certain traits from Clark bleed into Superman persona but with Christopher each persona feels distinct and separate from the other giving that feeling like it's two different characters altogether

It’s not just the glasses, it’s the whole persona. When’s he’s Clark he slouches, he stammers, he changes how he speaks, and he acts like a clumsy guy that’s always bumping into things and knocking stuff over- so when people look at Clark they might see a resemblance, but then they laugh because they realise there’s no way Clark Kent- the timid, clumsy, nervous man that he is- could possibly be Superman.

Man, there’s been a lot of good Supermen over the years, but Reeve is still the only one that makes me smile every single time I see him. Just looking at him, it makes you feel like everything’s going to be alright. He’s still the best Superman, in my opinion

When I first watched this movie, I was convinced that Clark Kent was played by an entirely different actor. That's how epic Christopher Reeve's acting was.
I took that smirk/smile to be more his private satisfaction at the effect "he/Superman" had on Lois, who he is crazy about, no matter which outfit he is wearing!
I didn't feel he was pleased he fooled her, after all he just ALMOST revealed himself and clearly wants to confide in her. I think the smile was him catching her flub "That's Clark, nice" instead of "That's nice, Clark" because she was still on cloud nine after her night with Superman. He grins because he realizes he DID get through to her, made her all flummoxed and scatterbrained. Who wouldn't smile if they realized the object of their affection was just as affected by you as you are by them?
In the novel *Superman: Miracle Monday*, Clark Kent (who is a TV news anchor) is hosting when the news program shows a segment recorded that day in which Jimmy Olsen interviews Superman. Clark is secretly proud of how he can pull off the screen transitioning from his face to Superman's without anyone noticing.
Christopher Reeve, the only actor who made people believe that a man could fly. He made Superman/Clark Kent so heart wrenchingly good, that it hurts so much to see every replacement failing to reach the magic he created.
A stroke of genius in his performance. It’s so subtle, but as you see the transition as he takes of his glasses, stands up straight, brings his shoulders back, and speaks in a deeper voice, it’s amazing. Nonw of the best CGI or prosthetics today could compare to Christopher Reeves’s astounding use of body language and voice to distinguish Clark Kent from Superman.
Well I think 40 years ago the expectation was that actors would act. Not that acting doesn't exist today, but in many cases CGI takes the place of good acting, writing and direction. Digital production has superseded human production.
Also keep in mind Reeve was offered a muscled suit (as all heroes use today) but he refused it, swearing he would get in athletic (more athletic) shape on his own, in time. He did. What we got is a believably active/athletic body, fit and well toned but clearly real, *him*, and that helps sell the character as well.
And it's more than just body language. It's the look in his eyes, going from unsure and averting his glance, to that confident, knowing look and smile. It's amazing to see!
I was never too fond of the original Superman franchise (probably watched them too late and with my expectations being too high), but this scene immediately stuck and is still remembered fondly after years. Totally love it, what a great actor! ☺️👍
The tag line should have been, " You will believe a man can act." No one else could have played Superman and Clark so beautifully. Movie magic thanks to Christopher Reeve.
The last segment was done in one take. The scene when SM/Clark flies away was a projection screen (all other shots and cuts were in-person). He says goodnight, salutes, and flies away. This is all pre-recorded and played back on a screen. The actual actor was at the door. Notice that there was no cut between SM flying away and Clark opening the door.
I don't care what anyone says, no one has ever embodied the Superman/Clark persona with so much charm, humor, beauty, and nobility, the way Chris Reeves did. Just as amazing the way John Williams came up with the perfect music for him. Which makes it even sadder Reeves life ended up being so tragic.
He endured tragedy and suffering but I wouldn't describe his life as tragic. He used his misfortune to do great things and proved he was truly Superman after all and forever.
Christopher Reeve is one of 2 celebrities (Robin Williams) that I can say, if I had the great fortune of meeting him...I probably would have just stood there and cried. Seeing him as Superman as a kid was one of the most memorable and happiest experiences ever. This scene is golden ---
In 1992 Christopher Reeve was making a movie (Mortal Sins) in my Vancouver neighbourhood. When I casually mentioned this to friend of mine she was at my door in record time. We walked down to the corner and Mr Reeve soon came by alone as he walked from his trailer to the set. I asked for a photo with the two of him and he happily obliged. She just mumbled and blushed. At the time she had two teenage children. The next time I visited her apartment the photo was printed, professionally framed and given a prominent home.
There are probably a bunch of old guys walking around who lived in the same dorm as Robin and Chris at Juilliard. They probably went on to have okay careers, but can you imagine? “Yeah my freshman year I lived across the hall from Robin and Chris who were roommates…” Imagine living on that hall when neither of them were famous and then 1977-1978 rolls around and boom.

Because The scripts have all been about a darker superman, and not the one that was the wholesome patriotic individual of the Reeve's era. Cause of that, he is always dour, but I still believe he still can capture the magic of the true Superman if the script presented itself, the evidence: the last scene of "Man of Steel" when he is "introduced" to Lois at the end, when he works for the daily planet. He has this perfect goofy smile, it perfectly captured a charm that was very reminicent of the Reeve's version. Now THAT is the Clark and the Superman that I want to see!.
Out of all the live action Superman media, this is by far the scene which best shows Clark Kent and Superman to me. The way Christopher Reeve, with just simple changes in posture, mannerism, and tone of voice completely switches character is fantastic!
Henry Cavill was very ernest as Superman, in a way that didn't come across as campy, which unfortunately Richard Donner didn't bother to correct. But Christopher Reeve... what a great looking Superman and, like everyone here seems to appreciate, a phenomenal Clark Kent ! I wanted to say something positive about Brandon Routh and Dean Cain's portrayal too, but except for their look and the fantastic feats their Superman performed on screen, their acting didn't stand out, unfortunately.

Too bad the writers and director tried to drown the movies in love-sick syrup and dance numbers. They were great other wise... well except for the web shooters explanation. Tom Holland is a great Peter Parker too, on par with Tobey Maguire, IMO. Don't like that it's all Stark tech now though, although that's the way it ended up in the Marvel Universe this millenium.

As good an actor as I have ever seen. We knew he was both Clark and Superman, but he's the only one who made me believe that he could hide it behind a pair of glasses and a slouch. Just remarkable.
This is why Christopher Reeve is THE live-action Superman, to which all others must be judged. Just the subtle changes in the voices and body language...he was just so fucking good.

A rare thing done these day's, done brilliantly and flawlessly by Reeves, he deserved an Oscar. This rare thing he's done, in which hasn't been done in any Superman Movie or portrayal since Reeves, even in MOS, BvS and even in Justice League. It is especially has not been used in Supergirl or any of the WB portrayals of any Super Hero. This rare thing Reeves does so flawlessly, brilliantly and naturally is called "Acting"
I think Dean Cain pulled it off admirably in Lois and Clark. He had to play a more modern version, but he still played his Clark as spectacularly normal.
Awesome acting by Christopher Reeves. No trick camera angles or lighting, just pure acting and projection to showcase 2 completely different personalities.
This is extra incredible because there isn't that much of a difference between the two character's personalities. It's pretty easy for an actor to play both an upstanding lawman and a crazed psychopath, and have the audience discern the difference, but Clark Kent and Superman have so many of the same traits that its a genuine feat of acting to make them stand out so much from each other. They have similar polite tones and folksy charm, similar manners, similar soft voices. It would have been easy for Reeve to fall into the trap of making clark a complete caricature to define him from Superman, but instead the change in body language and voice is subtle. Instead of two exaggerated extremes, Reeve is playing two fully realized, fleshed out characters who have a lot of similarities, and yet are noticeably distinct. That's talent.
Best part about this scene is that Clark used her absent-mindedness to take her out on a date as Clark XD A date with Lois was never set up in the first place hahaha
I like how at 1:33 Clark drops a big hint to Lois who he really when he says, "We better push on" while doing a flying gesture with his hand. I've watched this scene a few times and only just noticed it. Clever foreshadowing of Clark wanting to tell Lois he's Superman. Reeves was a very underrated actor.

Then she slowly walks out of frame from screen and answers door to live Christopher Reeve on cue to knock at door. Simply done.
Bud Collier who played Superman on radio and in the Fleischler shorts actually invented the technique of changing his voice. In the cartoons, he would always start saying as Clark, "This looks like a job..." and then he would drop his voice two octaves and complete, "...for Superman!"
This is just genius acting. I loved christopher as superman and spend my childhood watching this movies. Seeing this after so long brings me back immediately. Great feeling. Miss this special beauty in modern movies.
Nobody has nailed both Clark Kent and Superman like this ever again. Say what you will about modern day blockbusters, but Christopher Reeve pulling double duty really is the greatest Superhero acting job ever.
Why I love Christopher Reeve Superman. Clark the nerd comes first. He has power but dials it down to make people feel comfortable then cranks it up when he needs to.. cause he's at his core Nice.

Lois Lane is still mesmerized about that flight with Superman, that she didn't notice Clark without his glasses. And she also said "That's Clark, nice" instead of "That's nice Clark"
Reeve’s performance here-the transformation into Superman-blows me away every single time I see it. But it’s worth noting John Williams’ score in that moment too, which is *just* enough to underline the change without intruding.
If you look at this clip at the slowest speed that You Tube gives you, you can see that the foliage she crosses behind at :54 or the 6 on the screen, conceals the edge of the movie screen on which was projected the superman footage that she waved goodbye to...very clever sleight of hand on the part of director Richard Donner and director of photography Geoffrey Unsworth, who was a legend and also shot 2001: A Space Odyssey for Stanley Kubrick. After she's passed the foliage, the background is the normal set background.
Yeah, as I was looking at it, I thought "That's back projection". Very clever use of it, pretty much seamless. James Cameron used it a lot, especially in the Terminators and Aliens movies.
You can see that it's rear projection without that. Start at 0:40 and look at where the projection meets the real plant in the foreground on the left. The entire background is moving, jumping around. Also the quality is just lower compared to everything else.

You remind me of a story I love telling: When I first saw this film, it was in a neighborhood theater where the audience was particularly vocal throughout. As my older cousin and I left, I vividly recall a lady talking with her friend as they exited the theater too, explaining how attractive she found Christopher Reeve to be. "I'd love to wrap that curl of hair around my finger...!"

I don't think any of the other actors who played Lois Lanes did as great a job of Lois Lane either, not even close. The same with Gene Hackman's Lex Luthor, more narcissistic than Kevin Spacey. The same with Marlon Brando's Jor-El, more reserved and subtle than Russel Crowe's. Let's face it, 1978's Superman was a casting tour-de-force.
Paul Walsh Agreed. Bryan Singer had the right idea in trying to capture the magic of the original but the execution failed in Superman Returns. He did a great job finding Brandon Routh but failed with the Lois Lane casting of Kate Bosworth. And there was the over reliance of Spacey to carry the movie...especially with a weak screenplay.
txmoney i totally agree about kate bosworth- she would have made a better lana lang than lois- contrast her lois with margot’s i was shocked for the 2006 reboot that lois was such a damsel in distress constantly needing to be rescued- margot’s lois certainly was rescued too especially in superman 1 but she was such a throwback to those old hollywood actresses who were tough talking dames like bette davis and barbara stanwyck- margot’s lois gave the beatdown on the diner jerk after he beat up clark in the sequel- she wasnt a girl to mess with- she was very much a modern woman in a way that was appealing and appropriate without being a total misandrist
Amazing performance. Of course Reeve borrowed a lot from Cary Grant for Clark Kent, but managed such a contrast between the two characters that the suspension of disbelief is complete. Of course Lois does not know it's the same guy, it's not. It's two totally different guys.
It's impressive how well Reeves portrayed the two sides of Clark/Superman. It's like his body physically changes. Even the glasses make his nose look bigger when he's wearing them and the hair is a little flatter as Clark. No other actor has been able to do the same thing and it's just an amazing portrayal of Reeves' talent.
Turns his head as they're leaving to smile at, "that's Clark nice." He was Clark then for two seconds Superman then turns back toward her and he's Clark again. A lot going on in that scene. Christopher Reeve will always be the one and only Superman.
I can't believe how time flies, when I was in Junior High watching this on the big screen gave me goosebumps. Christopher Reeves was the best, Rest In Peace.
What a wonderful scene. Incredible screenplay at work here. Lois and Clark deliver the goods. When she walks in from the patio, she passes behind some shrubs, and that's where the splice is. Even knowing it, I still can't see it. Great film making.
I remember watching this in the cinema and being amazed at how he was able to do that so believably. Great acting and a great understanding of the two characters. You can only do that if you have a clear understanding of what makes them both unique characters in their own right.

He knows he's made an impression on her, and at first he's excited, until he looks down at his glasses and realizes that while Superman may be the man of Lois's dreams, Clark Kent is nobody to her. He's visibly distraught and frustrated at this realization, and resolves to tell her the truth, because he really wants to seal the deal. But he can't, he can't risk that secret getting out. All of that communicated through body language alone. I adore this sort of stuff, you'd be hard-pressed to see such expertly delivered visual storytelling like this in a modern film.
There's also the fact that when he says "Lois, I'm really..." He's really _who?_ He hasn't been given the name of Superman at that point. (I don't think he even introduced himself as "Kal-el" when telling Lois about coming from Krypton, did he?)
It's the supreme use of the visual medium of cinema and television. Whereas a book can give you insight into the mental world of the characters, good films and film makers tell a story with the lens, this is especially powerful when the dialogue doesn't match the thoughts of the characters. I Claudius is a supreme example of this.
I was watching a Columbo the other day, the murderer, George Hamilton, is smooth and slick and talks to Columbo with the easy confidence and grace of a successful television host, but when Columbo looks away, his easy smile fades and his face hardens and his eyes narrow. Without a word of dialogue, you see the real man behind the mask.
Done well, it's the strength of cinema, it's rarely done at all.
Lies again? Quit Clark Kent To Become Superman
Luthor makes that same point in Superman All Star. He points out that Lois is so infatuated with Superman, she fails to see the Clark Kents of the world. Ofcourse, we all know it's meant to be an ironic joke, because as the viewers we know that Clark IS Superman, but Luthor doesn't know that. And his point is still valid. Lois sees Superman and falls in love with him, even though she knows she can never have a normal relationship with him. She chooses to pursue that dream anyway and ignores all the 'Clark Kents' of the world that come in and out of her life in the meantime, because none of them can measure up to the impossible standard set by Superman.
Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman also raises this point several times on the show, but it was done best when, after Lois had just found out his secret, Clark points out that 'Clark is who he is, Superman is just what he can do'. Lois has fallen in love with Superman and is pissed at Clark for keeping that secret from her, but fails to acknowledge that Clark was already there the entire time. She just had her sights set on something better.
How can a normal man ever hope to live up to the likes of a incorruptible being with godlike powers? Answer: You can't. It's an unfair standard to set. He trapped both the woman of his dreams and himself in a love triangle that can never work out well, unless he breaks it by telling her the truth, but in so doing he has to live with the knowledge that Lois will spend the rest of her life being in danger because of her relationship to him, living in constant worry that a villain might get lucky some day and end her life. It's compelling because it's tragically bittersweet.
I feel like there's plenty of examples of acting on that level in modern film. I'm not at all a film buff so giving an example past Better Caul Saul would be tough personally, but in all the youtube clips I see form different shows and movies, it really doesn't seem like acting like that is more than uncommon. Definitely admirable and not something a ton of people can do, but plenty of the current actors of today can do that. I think it's a trend we see less bc of modern attention span than capabilities tho. People aren't always down to watch that level of performance bc it's more subtle and less action packed. Just my 2 cents

So far, Christopher Reeve is the only actor in the movies who performed this aspect of the character. Unfortunately, Henry Cavill in BvS fell into this trap and as a result, that plot hole was created. At least Brandon Routh tried to play Clark differently.

The change in demeanor is so wild that even without him saying something you can instantly feel the difference. The distinction Christopher puts between Clark and Superman is so unique, literally every other version of Superman/Clark I've seen certain traits of Superman bleed into the Clark persona or certain traits from Clark bleed into Superman persona but with Christopher each persona feels distinct and separate from the other giving that feeling like it's two different characters altogether

Christopher Reeve, the only actor who made people believe that a man could fly. He made Superman/Clark Kent so heart wrenchingly good, that it hurts so much to see every replacement failing to reach the magic he created.
A stroke of genius in his performance. It’s so subtle, but as you see the transition as he takes of his glasses, stands up straight, brings his shoulders back, and speaks in a deeper voice, it’s amazing. Nonw of the best CGI or prosthetics today could compare to Christopher Reeves’s astounding use of body language and voice to distinguish Clark Kent from Superman.
Well I think 40 years ago the expectation was that actors would act. Not that acting doesn't exist today, but in many cases CGI takes the place of good acting, writing and direction. Digital production has superseded human production.
Also keep in mind Reeve was offered a muscled suit (as all heroes use today) but he refused it, swearing he would get in athletic (more athletic) shape on his own, in time. He did. What we got is a believably active/athletic body, fit and well toned but clearly real, *him*, and that helps sell the character as well.

The last segment was done in one take. The scene when SM/Clark flies away was a projection screen (all other shots and cuts were in-person). He says goodnight, salutes, and flies away. This is all pre-recorded and played back on a screen. The actual actor was at the door. Notice that there was no cut between SM flying away and Clark opening the door.
I don't care what anyone says, no one has ever embodied the Superman/Clark persona with so much charm, humor, beauty, and nobility, the way Chris Reeves did. Just as amazing the way John Williams came up with the perfect music for him. Which makes it even sadder Reeves life ended up being so tragic.
He endured tragedy and suffering but I wouldn't describe his life as tragic. He used his misfortune to do great things and proved he was truly Superman after all and forever.

Christopher Reeve is one of 2 celebrities (Robin Williams) that I can say, if I had the great fortune of meeting him...I probably would have just stood there and cried. Seeing him as Superman as a kid was one of the most memorable and happiest experiences ever. This scene is golden ---
In 1992 Christopher Reeve was making a movie (Mortal Sins) in my Vancouver neighbourhood. When I casually mentioned this to friend of mine she was at my door in record time. We walked down to the corner and Mr Reeve soon came by alone as he walked from his trailer to the set. I asked for a photo with the two of him and he happily obliged. She just mumbled and blushed.
At the time she had two teenage children.
The next time I visited her apartment the photo was printed, professionally framed and given a prominent home.

Because The scripts have all been about a darker superman, and not the one that was the wholesome patriotic individual of the Reeve's era. Cause of that, he is always dour, but I still believe he still can capture the magic of the true Superman if the script presented itself, the evidence: the last scene of "Man of Steel" when he is "introduced" to Lois at the end, when he works for the daily planet. He has this perfect goofy smile, it perfectly captured a charm that was very reminicent of the Reeve's version. Now THAT is the Clark and the Superman that I want to see!.
Out of all the live action Superman media, this is by far the scene which best shows Clark Kent and Superman to me. The way Christopher Reeve, with just simple changes in posture, mannerism, and tone of voice completely switches character is fantastic!
I like the gentle sound they used when Superman flew off. No huge "WOOSH!" sound, just the flutter of his cape. Genius.

I think Dean Cain pulled it off admirably in Lois and Clark. He had to play a more modern version, but he still played his Clark as spectacularly normal.
They had Brandon Routh slouch a little bit and wear large coats to portray the idea that he's Clark, not Superman.
Awesome acting by Christopher Reeves. No trick camera angles or lighting, just pure acting and projection to showcase 2 completely different personalities.
This is at least part of what the Snyder movies are missing. The whole Clark-Superman dichotomy, there's essentially none of it in any of them.
This is extra incredible because there isn't that much of a difference between the two character's personalities. It's pretty easy for an actor to play both an upstanding lawman and a crazed psychopath, and have the audience discern the difference, but Clark Kent and Superman have so many of the same traits that its a genuine feat of acting to make them stand out so much from each other. They have similar polite tones and folksy charm, similar manners, similar soft voices. It would have been easy for Reeve to fall into the trap of making clark a complete caricature to define him from Superman, but instead the change in body language and voice is subtle. Instead of two exaggerated extremes, Reeve is playing two fully realized, fleshed out characters who have a lot of similarities, and yet are noticeably distinct. That's talent.
Ah I think this is the most important point! He doesn't play a caricature, he plays two BELIEVABLE characters (at least in personality). Well said.

Bud Collier who played Superman on radio and in the Fleischler shorts actually invented the technique of changing his voice. In the cartoons, he would always start saying as Clark, "This looks like a job..." and then he would drop his voice two octaves and complete, "...for Superman!"
This is just genius acting. I loved christopher as superman and spend my childhood watching this movies. Seeing this after so long brings me back immediately. Great feeling. Miss this special beauty in modern movies.

Nobody has nailed both Clark Kent and Superman like this ever again. Say what you will about modern day blockbusters, but Christopher Reeve pulling double duty really is the greatest Superhero acting job ever.
Why I love Christopher Reeve Superman. Clark the nerd comes first. He has power but dials it down to make people feel comfortable then cranks it up when he needs to.. cause he's at his core Nice.

Lois Lane is still mesmerized about that flight with Superman, that she didn't notice Clark without his glasses. And she also said "That's Clark, nice" instead of "That's nice Clark"

Reeve’s performance here-the transformation into Superman-blows me away every single time I see it.
But it’s worth noting John Williams’ score in that moment too, which is *just* enough to underline the change without intruding.

The music score is so amazing. It lifts everything in this scen… and Chrstopher Reeve of course.
If you look at this clip at the slowest speed that You Tube gives you, you can see that the foliage she crosses behind at :54 or the 6 on the screen, conceals the edge of the movie screen on which was projected the superman footage that she waved goodbye to...very clever sleight of hand on the part of director Richard Donner and director of photography Geoffrey Unsworth, who was a legend and also shot 2001: A Space Odyssey for Stanley Kubrick. After she's passed the foliage, the background is the normal set background.
Yeah, as I was looking at it, I thought "That's back projection". Very clever use of it, pretty much seamless. James Cameron used it a lot, especially in the Terminators and Aliens movies.
You can see that it's rear projection without that. Start at 0:40 and look at where the projection meets the real plant in the foreground on the left. The entire background is moving, jumping around. Also the quality is just lower compared to everything else.

You remind me of a story I love telling: When I first saw this film, it was in a neighborhood theater where the audience was particularly vocal throughout. As my older cousin and I left, I vividly recall a lady talking with her friend as they exited the theater too, explaining how attractive she found Christopher Reeve to be. "I'd love to wrap that curl of hair around my finger...!"

It's easy to forget Margot Kidder's performance, but without her Cristopher Reeve wouldn't be as great.
I don't think any of the other actors who played Lois Lanes did as great a job of Lois Lane either, not even close. The same with Gene Hackman's Lex Luthor, more narcissistic than Kevin Spacey. The same with Marlon Brando's Jor-El, more reserved and subtle than Russel Crowe's.
Let's face it, 1978's Superman was a casting tour-de-force.

Bryan Singer had the right idea in trying to capture the magic of the original but the execution failed in Superman Returns.
He did a great job finding Brandon Routh but failed with the Lois Lane casting of Kate Bosworth. And there was the over reliance of Spacey to carry the movie...especially with a weak screenplay.
txmoney i totally agree about kate bosworth- she would have made a better lana lang than lois- contrast her lois with margot’s i was shocked for the 2006 reboot that lois was such a damsel in distress constantly needing to be rescued- margot’s lois certainly was rescued too especially in superman 1 but she was such a throwback to those old hollywood actresses who were tough talking dames like bette davis and barbara stanwyck- margot’s lois gave the beatdown on the diner jerk after he beat up clark in the sequel- she wasnt a girl to mess with- she was very much a modern woman in a way that was appealing and appropriate without being a total misandrist

Amazing performance. Of course Reeve borrowed a lot from Cary Grant for Clark Kent, but managed such a contrast between the two characters that the suspension of disbelief is complete. Of course Lois does not know it's the same guy, it's not. It's two totally different guys.
It's impressive how well Reeves portrayed the two sides of Clark/Superman. It's like his body physically changes. Even the glasses make his nose look bigger when he's wearing them and the hair is a little flatter as Clark. No other actor has been able to do the same thing and it's just an amazing portrayal of Reeves' talent.

One of the greatest scenes in history. Most people have a hard time acting as one person here you see he is acting as both the same time.
Turns his head as they're leaving to smile at, "that's Clark nice." He was Clark then for two seconds Superman then turns back toward her and he's Clark again. A lot going on in that scene. Christopher Reeve will always be the one and only Superman.

What a wonderful scene. Incredible screenplay at work here. Lois and Clark deliver the goods. When she walks in from the patio, she passes behind some shrubs, and that's where the splice is. Even knowing it, I still can't see it. Great film making.

I remember watching this in the cinema and being amazed at how he was able to do that so believably. Great acting and a great understanding of the two characters. You can only do that if you have a clear understanding of what makes them both unique characters in their own right.
