In 1997, Radiohead released OK Computer.
It took them from a notable British act to the most important rock band on the planet. It was profoundly human, compositionally creative and carried themes that are just as -- if not more potent today -- as they were 20 years ago. OK Computer marked the end of an era, setting a new path for rock music. Without it, Muse, Coldplay or Arcade Fire wouldn’t exist as they do now.
In Radiohead’s attempt to subvert mainstream trends and conventions, they ironically became more successful for it. Creating their most conceptually important release and one of the greatest albums of all time.

Radiohead: lets remove everything that our fans loved before.
Kanye West and Arctic Monkeys did the same thing.
@@zackzallie8735 kinda sad how much Arctic Monkeys got shitted on for inventing TBHC
@@raidennaz1590 like i mentioned Kanye earlier, he was shitted on for releasing Yeezus, but later aged well and loved by fans. Soon, TBH&C will be acclaim by critics for its innovation in minimalist lounge pop with complex lyricism, like Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys.
And even when Radiohead does this we still love them

I love this album. I've been a follower of their music for over 20 years. The disconnection to society was ever present at the time of recording this album. I've watched several interviews where Thom Yorke speaks in the present, during the 90s, where he shares his genuine concerns about the state of our society. Today reality only perpetuates it.
honestly if you show this to someone who doesn’t know anything about Radiohead they’d believe you if you told them it came out last year tbhh.
OK Computer is my all-time favorite album. There isn't a single song I dislike. In my eyes, it's absolutely perfect.
For me the only song I often skip is Karma Police, but only because it was so overplayed in the late 90s it ruined it for me 😂 but it's a top 5 album for me and always will be.
@@hettel_visual well i guess thats a pro for me not being raised in that time

Even Fitter Happier? Cuz it’s on my playlist and it’s really sad ngl.
Every single song on the OK Computer is absurdly good. It's as close to a perfect album as any band has ever created.
In rainbows is equal
And abbey road and pet sounds are pretty near perfect too
Not even close. I do love a few of the songs on the album but there are a lot of boring stinkers. Abbey Road is 100 times better than ok computer.

OK Computer could not have come out any earlier than it did, but I honestly believe if it came out today it would still sound like the future of rock.
Most likely would be Album of the year on many... Many sites.
Neither does In Rainbows
Precisely the reason as to why the songs from OKNOTOK sound way ahead of our time even if they are 20 years old.
Exactly. When I first heard it I thought It aged very well and was ahead of it's time.
@@kyoshinronin my thought exactly
Just rewatch this but Climbing up the walls is seriously underrated as a song in this album
Zero 7 made an excellent remix if you don’t already know it
Its hard to describe the impact of this album to teens of today. But back in 97, i remember being in a pub and discussing it with friends and we all agreed it was unlike anything we'd ever heard before. It was so futuristic sounding. Someone said it was like music from 2010 or something. Of course 2010 came and went and it turns out radiohead didnt quite predict the future musically ( the 00s for most part was just dross and often cheesy pop) but they did show us what music could be when we broaden our minds.
Music has gotten so much worse and it’s insane how that’s an unpopular opinion

@Steve Another Radiohead album, my personal favorite.
While in rainbows is good it’s nowhere near ok computer
@Steve listen to king of limbs from the basement only then listen to a moon shaped pool they're both top notch
MyEverythingBurrito I think it’s supposed to mean they never tried to remake OK Computer. All their following masterpieces were unique.
Derek Hamm that’s a good take; I like that a lot more. Obviously everyone has their opinions, but I think to objectively say OK Computer is perfect and none of their other albums are is a little juvenile.
I've tried to write an intellectual comment about how OK Computer changed me forever for a good 10 minutes now, but all I can say is I will always love this record.
you dont need to. those of us who are in the know are the lucky ones.
Same. I am obsessed with this album and Radiohead in general.....I have OK computer on my computer, phone and tablet. I have an original first release pressing on vinyl as well as all the OK eps. I own the album on CD as well as having the album on minidisc (along with the bends as well as In rainbows and all their other albumsbut those I had to make myself). I never want to not be able to listen to Radiohead....I also have OK computer on tape but that is stuck in the tape deck of my Morris minor.....
Radiohead is so good, but I associated its music to the most depressing phase of my life. i will try to go back to it and disassociate with it somehow
Some things you can’t describe but just know how good they are
Sorry... not sorry... I have to say, this album really blows any album out of the water due to its applicability to today's society. It was composed, what? 20 years ago? Amazing... truly amazing.
I listen to albums for the music, not the message. 🤷🏼♂️
All great art is timeless. There is far more and far older than this for which that is true.
I don’t understand people that say this album is overrated. It definitely isn’t, and it deserves all the hype. It’s one of those albums I enjoy listening to from the first song to the last one without pausing or taking a break due to how great the experience is.
Plenty of albums are capable of doing that, ok computer isn’t as popular and acclaimed as it is simply because of the consistency throughout the tracklist or the flow from one song to another
It has exactly two popular songs.
People says that its overrated because of folks like you. "Omg this album is so good how can you not enjoy it??". People just have different opinions and enjoy different things.

OK Computer is a beautiful album. It's one of those albums that I remember listening to and being blown away by, and every time I ever go back to it, the experience of lying there with headphones on listening to it is beyond cathartic. been listening to it in full from time to time over the last 20 years and it's still as wonderful as it ever was. Exit Music For A Film is one of the most haunting and beautiful songs ever written.
I recently bought ok computer on vinyl to listen to it (because I heard daniel howell praise it) and damn. I cant describe it but it's just punches you in the chest and makes you want to cry at times. I already knew no surprises from when my spotify playlists would randomly play songs and would fall asleep to it, and now hearing it in an album so filled with complex emotions, it's like coming back home after a trip, everything cold and clean, only to immediately fall asleep under so many blankets. It's such a pleasing album to me
This album came out exactly when I needed it. A lot of people say it's depressing music and I would understand why. But the majority of people experience life in well defined spectrum. This album touches the tender emotions in between those segments of general emotion. Not quite happy or sad. Somewhere between angry or joyful. Enlightened yet meaningless. It's frightening and I loved it for that and I continue to adore this album after all this time.
The vocal is rubbish. And they should have added more layers of sounds and make better arrangement to make the song sound fuller. All Radiohead songs sound so thin to me. The only thing I get from them is harmonic complexity. Far from sonically brilliant.
Art, for me, isnt supposed to make you feel happy. Its supposed to reflect life in a way which makes you appreciate it. In my opinion, the darkest and deepest music can be just as beautiful as anything else.
To make a obvious point, depression is real. Our modern world gets even the happiest people down, taking a moment to stop and reflect on the world around us and how it makes us truly feel is what’s beautiful about thought provoking music
I love your comment, you described this album perfectly.
It's just honest. Don't need it to be sad or happy. It's more like just being. Not sure where this depressing stereotype comes from except from people who just will never feel the vibe the way we do.
The 90s for me: Pixies, Nirvana, Radiohead, RATM, Tool, Alice in Chains, Smashing Pumpkins. Timeless music.

The record changed my life and my entire approach to music, since I was actually working on a record when it was released. I went to see them at Bill Graham Civic in SF about a month after it came out and was absolutely blown away. The place was only 2/3 full. By the time they came back about 9 months later they sold out 3 stadium shows in an hour. This really was a turning point and I think comparisons to Dark Side are more than warranted. Radiohead changed rock and roll forever with this one album, full stop.

OK Computer is the album that made me realize that truly great original music will always be made. It brought me out of the poor attitude that we peaked with Zeppelin and early 80's punk/alternative. I still hear songs on Discover Weekly that blow me away, written and performed by people half my age. The garage band across the street sucks hard, but I encourage the practice. Make music, kids. It's one of the easy ways to (potentially) make the world a better place.

It’s funny how you said about ‘Ok Computer’ being like ‘Ok Google’ or ‘Hey Siri’ and an eerie vision cos it was over 20 years ago. When Scott did a similar thing when trying to talk to an old computer in ‘Star Trek IV The Voyage Home’ and that was over 30 years ago! they even had voice activated computers in the original series and that was around 50 years ago! so it was foreseen way before Radiohead. Now that’s the real eerie
"ok computer" is the voice command for pressing enter in an old voice synthesis program for mac called plaintalk
The magic of sci-fi in our history...
Ok Computer is how you speak to the computer in the spaceship The Heart of Gold in the 70's book and TV show (now a film in 2005) The Hitchikers Guide To The Galaxy which Thom Yorke was a big fan of. Marvin the Paranoid Android was also a main character in that book hence the name of their song Paranoid Android. This character is seen at 5:53 in the bottom right hand corner
It's not just about the voice command itself, but the context.
Or maybe people imagine something first and then try to create it along with that. 🤷 It is interconnected not detached from the past.
To be in the crowd singing along to no surprises today shows just how prescient radiohead was. Thousands of people singing “take down the government, they don’t speak for us.” They understood, now we do too.

@@jakeisrandom3343 that’s fair but how does that make in rainbows better? Like o get if you personally enjoy it more but those aren’t exactly good reasons as to why it’s a better album, I think what makes critics like Anthony fantano good is that he helps people understand how to critically evaluate an album, I think people who only enjoy albums because they’re fun or happy are missing out a lot because of this lack of critical evaluation. But, each to their own.

Fawkk YuTuu Electioneering is mainly in the track listing to reverse the eeriness of Fitter Happier, which I guess can be interpreted as a lull in terms of the themes of OK Computer, but it still works to me. The Tourist is an amazing closer, and it compliments the beginning of the album, Airbag, perfectly (“HEY IDIOT SLOW DOWN!!!!!!!!”).

We should all give big love to Nigel Godrich. His work is equally amazing, inspiring and revolutionary as the music. The production on all of Radiohead's work is 50% of the charm for me. Truly amazing.
As an aspiring producer I can't agree more. A lot of very creative production choices on Radiohead albums that make every song come to life yet still sound coherent. Also let's not forget Dan Rickwoods ever amazing album covers. Another unsung hero.
He would be the first one to tell you if you read any of his interviews that it is pretty collaborative. The band produced it just as much as he did and he only felt as if he was acting as an interface sometimes when they just couldn’t figure out the technology.
I think that probably is true for most great albums: the overused term "underrated" might be applicable to the producer's role.

Omg finally a video on Radiohead, amazing! Please please PLEASE do one on Neutral Milk Hotel soon!
Christian Le Surf - Music we have much in common my friend
More like just a video on ITAOTS; nobody really gives a damn about their other work
YES NEED THIS
Do one on death grips
@@owen1686 Avery Island is also really good though...
What's scary about the album content is that it's relevance still hold strong to this day, especially the political turmoil around the world, social media intolerance, pandemic of COVID-19, technology isolation and conspiracies. OK Computer is not just an ''album'', but a warning for a cold systematic future.
What makes it so good is how well thom predicted the future and how well the themes apply almost 25 years after
I changed the wake word for my Amazon Echo from Alexa to "Computer" just so that I'd have the excuse to say "OK Computer" whenever I interact with it.
"When I am king you will be first against the wall"
Lennon worthy
Feels more Roger Waters, literally fits as a lyric for The Wall.
My dad and I quote this line often.
Lenin worthy
@@pilgrim4954 nice, someone who gets it
@Illiterati a reference, not a direct line.
The 90's was full of top albums, this was one of them. One of the only albums I can still listen to in its entirety and still not be bored of it. Karma Police and Let Down are just magical
This is hands down the best intro to a UA-cam video I have ever heard, masterpiece
The videos they made to accompany this album were amazing as well!
I don’t know if it’s the best album ever, but OK Computer is easily my favorite album of all time
What's the difference between best and favourite?
jaylinsa it’s my personal favorite, but I don’t know if it’s objectively The best album ever like some critics say.
It is all of the above🤣 One thing it is: A Masterpiece. Flat out.
Josh456 you can’t really say anything is objectively better than anything else. You can try but it’s all down to preference
I guess it really depends on what your criteria is for the "best". Definitely my favorite though
An absolute masterpiece from start to finish. Its the album that got me into Radiohead.
Nice username and Prof pic
What an incredible video. Great work
Why is the editing in these videos so good
Can you do one on In Rainbows? Loved this!
in rainbows is my favourite radiohead album! there basement session is just beautiful.
Max Boquoi Same! It’s hard to choose a favorite with them but In Rainbows really got me into them.
@@kithlea exactly that. radiohead has a dense discography and a lot of it is really really good. I have a few of their albums on vinyl and listening to them in one go makes you feel it. And in rainbows just hits me the hardest
Nude is my favorite Radiohead song, and In Rainbows help me through my uni years.
Carcosa You’ll go to hell for all your dirty mind is thinking... 😉
It's not Oxford-shy-err. It's Oxford-sheer.
No British county is pronounced 'shire' as in Lord Of The Rings Hobbits
Ox-fud-sha.
ox - fud-shuh
i pronounce it oxford-shir, im from scotland.
@Zen Says the guy that descends from the morons that butchered OUR language, how the fuck could we pronounce our own language wrong? Americans did not create the English language..
Nobody cares..
I was 8 years old when this album was released and I will say it was ahead of it's time for 1997. First song I heard off this album was 'Paronoid Android' instantly loved the song so I gave the whole album a chance and listen to it. One of the best albums I've ever listened to.
Maybe I listened to this while on molly too many times, but it's amazing to me how OKC is still a marvel of musicality, writing, and engineering 24 years later. It is musical heaven.
Generation X’s Dark Side of The Moon.
Sgt pepper
Still waiting on Gen Z's good music...
@@robidium96 it's there, you just have to find it
@@something6649 I was thinking that A Brief Enquiry Into Online Relationships could be the "OK Computer"
Robidium To Pimp a Butterfly?
Radiohead used arpeggios and minor chords. People love this stuff. Weird Fishes is a great example.
That song is amazing! I love "In Rainbows" so much!
Great song..In Rainbows was their best album
@I'm unsubscribing. Yeah, and arpeggios are hardly an obscure musical technique either 😄
I mean, arpeggios and minor chords especially are pretty common, but yes Radiohead are masters, and Weird Fishes is incredible. I've just learned the main guitar part and I literally played it continuously for about 90 minutes the other day, didn't get even slightly bored, it's such an addictive piece of music.
It IS the best album of all times. I still remember hearing Karma Police for the very first time when it came out and I could not get this song out of my head. That was the album that sparked my love for Radiohead as a band, because of how powerful OK Computer was and how all of these songs resonated with me.
Love this album. Bought it and drove 5 hours to North Devon listening to I over and over again - it was an awesome moment in time
I swear Thom Yorke is ahead of our time. In 1997 he somehow had anxiety about computers and technology. Even the phrase "OK Computer" sounds so casual like he'd knew we'd have "Hey Google" or something
props for the editing too I love it lol
IIRC, the working title was "Palo Alto", influence by a trip to Silicon Valley.
He certainly wasn't the first or the only one to have anxiety about computers or technology. You're just too young or uninformed about music to know it.
@@stevenhaas9622 infact you are right, I am too young and too uninformed about it. But still he makes bangers
@@n00bie96 There's some really fascinating old popular tech stuff that we're already forgetting, we already had electronic music hitting the charts in the 1960s, and in 1995 the Satellaview was broadcasting games direct into people's houses. Home computing had become widespread throughout the 1980s, quite a few big games (at least in the UK) had been developed by very young people at home, which led to the general belief was that while the old generation still couldn't program a VCR, the new generation would be so informed and educated about computers by growing up surrounded by them it would be amazing and full of wild opportunity. By 1997 it was very obvious that wasn't happening, schools were still not widely teaching anything like programming, and the "bedroom developers" were very much a thing of the past, we realised that technology had already advanced so quickly that people couldn't even imagine how their machines worked and in fact didn't even question it. (please note this is all EXTREMELY unsourced, biased and vague recollections, not historical fact, lol)
It's a bit like how people often interpret 1984 as predicting the future, when it was based on international events that were happening at the time. They resonate with people because we understand them, they weren't time capsules that suddenly revealed their truth many years later. (Similarly I read some sci-fi from 1970 recently and it was unintentionally devastating because it clearly suggested we've been having the same human rights arguments forever, and will always have them, progress is so tiny and we're so quick to forget and fight the same battle every five years.)
The title 'OK Computer' was quite a stark seeming one at the time to me though, herrdoktorprofessor. It's like granting technology power over humans "OK, computer. I agree to that". Album titles didn't tend to be commands meets resigned acceptance. Although 'the fear' had been around since the 1950s and particularly in the 70s, fear of technology/modern life wasn't so sincerely, with import of doom, and starkly, directly, articulated until OK Computer (although The Bends made similar themes more implicit and I will always therefore understand people who prefer The Bends over OK Computer) .
Great video, barring, of course, your pronunciation of Oxfordshire.
I remember listening to this album years ago on ordinary cheap in-ears which was all I had. Coming back to it now, I can definitely say that the mastering on this one is definitely worth using your best pair of over-ears.
