Sorry... not sorry... I have to say, this album really blows any album out of the water due to its applicability to today's society. It was composed, what? 20 years ago? Amazing... truly amazing.
I remember being 25 yrs old and playing this non stop it spoke to me on a level I had never felt with music before, inspired me to learn guitar (My job now). Still listen to it at least once a month. It's still so relevant...my son has just discovered them (independent of my influence) and is a big fan too!
OK Computer still floors me to this day. It truly is the perfect album. Each song flows so perfectly into the next, and yet they all stand out on their own. The concept is fully realized and tightly achieved. And perhaps most importantly, the songs are composed and arranged in such a way that whether I'm actively analyzing a track or just mindlessly listening to it, I'm equally enthralled.
OK Computer is a beautiful album. It's one of those albums that I remember listening to and being blown away by, and every time I ever go back to it, the experience of lying there with headphones on listening to it is beyond cathartic. been listening to it in full from time to time over the last 20 years and it's still as wonderful as it ever was. Exit Music For A Film is one of the most haunting and beautiful songs ever written.
My brother bought this album on day 1 of its release in Australia. The next day he went off to work - and as a greasy uni student - I put the album on. I listened to the record 3 times in a row. When my bro got home I told him this album was so good it would change the music world. We grabbed beers and I started listen no 4. An absolute timeless classic!😊 Personally, I love In Raimbows just as much as OK - that album was also commercial suicide being released online for whatever you wanted to pay for it - and they made a fortune. Great art breathes on risk!
OK Computer is the album that made me realize that truly great original music will always be made. It brought me out of the poor attitude that we peaked with Zeppelin and early 80's punk/alternative. I still hear songs on Discover Weekly that blow me away, written and performed by people half my age. The garage band across the street sucks hard, but I encourage the practice. Make music, kids. It's one of the easy ways to (potentially) make the world a better place.
I'm not into lyrics at all (my belief we have a spectrum between love for lyrics and love for melody), but I still loved this album when it came out. Instrumentally (including voice)/melodically it's incredible album.
Floss Cat 4th best? No it’s at least top 3. Most people rank it as #2. But we’re all entitled to our own opinions. Personally, Kid A is my favorite Radiohead record.
Entroducing is probably my favourite album right next to ok computer. A record completely new, fresh and creating a genre within itself that is unable to be replicated just as with ok computer in a word, perfect. Had the privilege of seeing Radiohead play in Glasgow a few years ago during the 20th anniversary of ok computer , a life changing experience.
I love the strategy of UA-cam channels surrounding music. Like the title and thumbnail of this video are literally "The thing you like = good!" I love Ok computer. I just find this funny.
We should all give big love to Nigel Godrich. His work is equally amazing, inspiring and revolutionary as the music. The production on all of Radiohead's work is 50% of the charm for me. Truly amazing.
As an aspiring producer I can't agree more. A lot of very creative production choices on Radiohead albums that make every song come to life yet still sound coherent. Also let's not forget Dan Rickwoods ever amazing album covers. Another unsung hero.
He would be the first one to tell you if you read any of his interviews that it is pretty collaborative. The band produced it just as much as he did and he only felt as if he was acting as an interface sometimes when they just couldn’t figure out the technology.
Most bands really struggle with the 3rd one, but Radiohead smashed it out of the park with OK Computer. I didn’t really understand it as a spotty teenager, but now it really is up there as one of the greatest for me.
To be in the crowd singing along to no surprises today shows just how prescient radiohead was. Thousands of people singing “take down the government, they don’t speak for us.” They understood, now we do too.
It’s funny how you said about ‘Ok Computer’ being like ‘Ok Google’ or ‘Hey Siri’ and an eerie vision cos it was over 20 years ago. When Scott did a similar thing when trying to talk to an old computer in ‘Star Trek IV The Voyage Home’ and that was over 30 years ago! they even had voice activated computers in the original series and that was around 50 years ago! so it was foreseen way before Radiohead. Now that’s the real eerie
Ok Computer is how you speak to the computer in the spaceship The Heart of Gold in the 70's book and TV show (now a film in 2005) The Hitchikers Guide To The Galaxy which Thom Yorke was a big fan of. Marvin the Paranoid Android was also a main character in that book hence the name of their song Paranoid Android. This character is seen at 5:53 in the bottom right hand corner
The record changed my life and my entire approach to music, since I was actually working on a record when it was released. I went to see them at Bill Graham Civic in SF about a month after it came out and was absolutely blown away. The place was only 2/3 full. By the time they came back about 9 months later they sold out 3 stadium shows in an hour. This really was a turning point and I think comparisons to Dark Side are more than warranted. Radiohead changed rock and roll forever with this one album, full stop.

Fawkk YuTuu Electioneering is mainly in the track listing to reverse the eeriness of Fitter Happier, which I guess can be interpreted as a lull in terms of the themes of OK Computer, but it still works to me. The Tourist is an amazing closer, and it compliments the beginning of the album, Airbag, perfectly (“HEY IDIOT SLOW DOWN!!!!!!!!”). I’ll agree Lucky is weaker than tracks like PA and Exit Music, but that is the track that provided the layout for OK COMPUTER. I mean I think every track on OK COMPUTER works really well, but i can see why some people would disagree
This album dropped like a bomb in the midst of my chaotic teenage years, and listening to it today still makes me so emotional and nostalgic it almost hurts.

The jump from pablo honey to the bends was massive and I fell in love with them and I vividly remember anticipating it coming out but doubting they could top the bends … then after like the first 30 seconds of airbag … I just thought oh fuck me wow and it’s stayed like that since . I remember not being surprised about thinking kid A was meh coz how do you go about topping that.
7:38 ahem, In Rainbows is near perfect as well. They got close with A Moon Shaped Pool. One thing's for certain, they can establish an atmosphere like no other.
Steve please give it another try. There is some very melodic work and Radiohead has beautiful and innovative work in every album. I agree that In Rainbows and A Moon Shaped Pool are masterpieces
@Steve give In Rainbows another spin if you havent already, and maybe the My Iron Lung ep. I got into RH fairly recently, started with OK Computer and spent weeks only listening to that album because it's widely considered their best and i was terrified of being disappointed. My friend recommended I listen to In Rainbows and it astonished me. I've loved them ever since. (OKC still the favorite though.)
@@tobiasscott7429 Absolutely agree. I was also one of those "Radiohead just makes computer processed noises and blips for music these days" fans....and King Of Limbs is certainly guilty of that. But A Moon Shaped Pool is terrific and, obviously, so is In Rainbows.

I recently bought ok computer on vinyl to listen to it (because I heard daniel howell praise it) and damn. I cant describe it but it's just punches you in the chest and makes you want to cry at times. I already knew no surprises from when my spotify playlists would randomly play songs and would fall asleep to it, and now hearing it in an album so filled with complex emotions, it's like coming back home after a trip, everything cold and clean, only to immediately fall asleep under so many blankets. It's such a pleasing album to me
I always thought OK Computer was the best album I have ever heard. No doubt about it. Even instrumental parts like in airbag or the end of lucky can make me travel across galaxies in my mind.. Is just unreal the artistic creativity in the whole thing. From Airbag to The tourist.
What's scary about the album content is that it's relevance still hold strong to this day, especially the political turmoil around the world, social media intolerance, pandemic of COVID-19, technology isolation and conspiracies. I swear Thom Yorke is ahead of our time. In 1997 he somehow had anxiety about computers and technology. Even the phrase "OK Computer" sounds so casual like he'd knew we'd have "Hey Google" or something props for the editing too I love it lol
He certainly wasn't the first or the only one to have anxiety about computers or technology. You're just too young or uninformed about music to know it.
@@n00bie96 There's some really fascinating old popular tech stuff that we're already forgetting, we already had electronic music hitting the charts in the 1960s, and in 1995 the Satellaview was broadcasting games direct into people's houses. Home computing had become widespread throughout the 1980s, quite a few big games (at least in the UK) had been developed by very young people at home, which led to the general belief was that while the old generation still couldn't program a VCR, the new generation would be so informed and educated about computers by growing up surrounded by them it would be amazing and full of wild opportunity. By 1997 it was very obvious that wasn't happening, schools were still not widely teaching anything like programming, and the "bedroom developers" were very much a thing of the past, we realised that technology had already advanced so quickly that people couldn't even imagine how their machines worked and in fact didn't even question it. (please note this is all EXTREMELY unsourced, biased and vague recollections, not historical fact, lol) It's a bit like how people often interpret 1984 as predicting the future, when it was based on international events that were happening at the time. They resonate with people because we understand them, they weren't time capsules that suddenly revealed their truth many years later. (Similarly I read some sci-fi from 1970 recently and it was unintentionally devastating because it clearly suggested we've been having the same human rights arguments forever, and will always have them, progress is so tiny and we're so quick to forget and fight the same battle every five years.)
The title 'OK Computer' was quite a stark seeming one at the time to me though, herrdoktorprofessor. It's like granting technology power over humans "OK, computer. I agree to that". Album titles didn't tend to be commands meets resigned acceptance. Although 'the fear' had been around since the 1950s and particularly in the 70s, fear of technology/modern life wasn't so sincerely, with import of doom, and starkly, directly, articulated until OK Computer (although The Bends made similar themes more implicit and I will always therefore understand people who prefer The Bends over OK Computer) .

Sorry... not sorry... I have to say, this album really blows any album out of the water due to its applicability to today's society. It was composed, what? 20 years ago? Amazing... truly amazing.
I listen to albums for the music, not the message. 🤷🏼♂️
All great art is timeless. There is far more and far older than this for which that is true.

I remember being 25 yrs old and playing this non stop it spoke to me on a level I had never felt with music before, inspired me to learn guitar (My job now). Still listen to it at least once a month. It's still so relevant...my son has just discovered them (independent of my influence) and is a big fan too!
AWE! I drove around simply to listen to this and alternate with The Fragile, when NIN finally popped back up

The 90s for me: Pixies, Nirvana, Radiohead, RATM, Tool, Alice in Chains, Smashing Pumpkins. Timeless music.

My brother bought this album on day 1 of its release in Australia. The next day he went off to work - and as a greasy uni student - I put the album on. I listened to the record 3 times in a row. When my bro got home I told him this album was so good it would change the music world. We grabbed beers and I started listen no 4.
An absolute timeless classic!😊
Personally, I love In Raimbows just as much as OK - that album was also commercial suicide being released online for whatever you wanted to pay for it - and they made a fortune.
Why is OK Computer so great?
Phenomenal song writing with flawless execution. Songwriting is the major key though.
Plus Nigel's magic touch and Donwood's art
I'm not into lyrics at all (my belief we have a spectrum between love for lyrics and love for melody), but I still loved this album when it came out. Instrumentally (including voice)/melodically it's incredible album.
And the production is perfect!
“Major key” hehe
For me, It's how the songs are interwoven with the prophetic themes being explored that makes it great.
Who else loves Let Down? The best song from the best album.
I adore the entire album except for let down.. I have no idea why
For me it will always be the ending of Karma Police, it’s just divine

Entroducing is probably my favourite album right next to ok computer. A record completely new, fresh and creating a genre within itself that is unable to be replicated just as with ok computer in a word, perfect. Had the privilege of seeing Radiohead play in Glasgow a few years ago during the 20th anniversary of ok computer , a life changing experience.
I love the strategy of UA-cam channels surrounding music. Like the title and thumbnail of this video are literally "The thing you like = good!"
I love Ok computer.
I think that probably is true for most great albums: the overused term "underrated" might be applicable to the producer's role.

"ok computer" is the voice command for pressing enter in an old voice synthesis program for mac called plaintalk
The magic of sci-fi in our history...
It's not just about the voice command itself, but the context.
Or maybe people imagine something first and then try to create it along with that. 🤷 It is interconnected not detached from the past.

Damn, you don’t like the tourist??
God Damn the tourist is fucking great
@@fawkkyutuu8851 I'd keep Lucky and Electioneering, and remove Climbing Up The Walls. Also, how do you not like The Tourist? Shits amazing
6:18 these comparisons were a real eye opener, it makes you appreciate how well they blended their influences into their sound
This album dropped like a bomb in the midst of my chaotic teenage years, and listening to it today still makes me so emotional and nostalgic it almost hurts.
Radiohead are fans of Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. The title, Ok Computer, and Paranoid Android were inspired by it.
I always wondered that because paranoid android is such an obvious reference to Marvin
Human Being The “Ok Computer” reference is less obvious.

I’m a 42 year old Korean. Back in 1999, like any Korean high school senior, i had one day left for the CSAT, i was ready but not ready, freaking out. IIRC, the working title was "Palo Alto", influence by a trip to Silicon Valley.
He certainly wasn't the first or the only one to have anxiety about computers or technology. You're just too young or uninformed about music to know it.
@@stevenhaas9622 infact you are right, I am too young and too uninformed about it. But still he makes bangers
(please note this is all EXTREMELY unsourced, biased and vague recollections, not historical fact, lol)
It's a bit like how people often interpret 1984 as predicting the future, when it was based on international events that were happening at the time.
