I think it mostly affected them in their early days when their catalogue wasn't as vast. Repetition becomes a part of the job and I'm sure some tracks from OK Computer are probably just as daunting for them to play as well.

A major reason "Creep" became massive is that it had the same soft verses, loud chorus pattern that makes up Nirvana's output. They probably didn't intend to write yet-another-Grunge song, but that was the sound of 1993.

This song is the reason why I always thought that radiohead is just a generic grunge band. I remember how I wasnt really interested in checking their other stuff judging by a few pablo honey and the bends songs. And one day I stumbled upon How to disappear completely and I was fckn crushed by this song and didnt believe that the creep guys made it. Thats how my lifelong obsession with the band started

One reason Creep is so popular is because most people can relate to feeling that way about someone-ntm, it’s an awesome sounding song.

I'm not sure how more obvious to put this, but, yes, if you make a song about being a weirdo who doesn't fit in, it's going to resonate with people who feel like weirdos who don't fit in. It's like telling Batman fans they must have PTSD as a dig.
If I were in Thom's shoes, I would absolutely feel the same. If people only knew you for one song and ignored all of the music that you put your heart into making, I would begin to hate it as well. The aversion to the popularity of this song though led to the creation of some of the best albums of all time, so at least you can give it that, lol

what i find funny is how Creep is constantly pointed out as the "big single that the band hates to play" but now they seem to overcame that (they even play it in the South Amircan tour, when i saw them for the first time). Meanwhile, there's another big single that they refused to play since the 90's, "High & Dry" and no one talks about it lol
Oh, you can find at least a couple of Yorke interviews where he goes on at length about how much he hates that song, and Jonny Greenwood hates it even more. They were basically forced by their label to write a "hit single" and the whole experience was a horror show for them.

"Creep" is probably the ultimate example of a stand-out track. It was their first and only song to become a massive hit, their only song that still gets played on most radio stations, and it was really the only song in Radiohead's discography to sound the way that it did.
It was popular because it resonated with a lot of frustrated people during the '90s (and even now), but you can tell that the band did not want to let that song define them. They moved as far away from that sound as they could, while making some of their most impressive work in the process.
These days, you don't really go to a Radiohead concert just to watch them perform "Creep", but it always comes as a pleasant surprise whenever they do decide to play it.
The only other one I hear played on the radio sometimes is High and Dry which, if I’m not mistaken, Thom Yorke also hated haha.

The funny thing about Radiohead is that they had a number of other radio-friendly tracks besides "Creep". Why doesn't "Fake Plastic Trees" get any airplay? That's a nice pop-rock song. If I'm not mistaken, that song was also somewhat of a hit.
@@efficiencygaming3494 yeah I agree that Fake Plastic Trees would be a good radio one, or Just or No Surprises - Karma Police probably gets some air time now and then. I definitely think they have other “hits” besides Creep - Creep was just their biggest.
Radiohead is definitely not a one hit wonder band. But there is something unique about Creep. It resonate with a lot of people, period. 80 years from now I wouldnt be surprised if people of that time will still enjoy it the same way ~ something like Queen's We Will Rock You.
@@kobisjeruk Yeah, definitely. It's a very iconic song. Even if you don't care for the lyrics, you have to admit that it's still brilliant musically. The guitar riffs, drum beats, and even the chord progression are all catchy and memorable in an anthemic kind of way.

He always said that he would be bummed if he went to a little Richard gig and didn't hear Tutti Fruiti, so he did it for the fans...and that's one of the many reasons why Lemmy was the man.

I wished you took time to highlight the "Very 2021 Rmx" version of the song that Thom put out recently. It's a very eerie rework that confirms your take that the song is a ghost that haunts the band, even after 20 years
I had a few sentences about it in an early draft of the script (including it below), but didn't really feel it connected to the script.
Strangely in 2021, Thom Yorke released a remixed version of "Creep" called "Creep (Very 2021 Remix)" which is pretty much a slowed down version of the track with some added reverb and a synth now in the mix. Yorke said the remix was done for a friend and for a world that was "seemingly turning upside down."

I feel like we're finally getting to a point where Creep is old enough that it's not attracting the same audience anymore. They've built such a massive body of work that there's no point to waste your money only to hear Creep. It seems like it's becoming a more tongue in cheek wink at the audience when they do finally play it which I honestly kinda like.
For the longest time I would only know Radiohead as the band who made Creep. They were just another 90s grunge band to me and it didn't take until a very rough moment in my life for me to open up to more of their music, and that's when I discovered No Suprises, which to this day is still my #1 Radiohead song
Same here. I never gave them much thought until last year when my six year relationship ended. I started expanding my music library and they quickly became one of my top three favorite bands, now up there with Tears for Fears and Steely Dan for me.

I always find that an artist's most popular song is never the one that actually presents their true sound, skill and abilities, so I never judge how good an artist is based on their biggest song as most of the time the best stuff is normally a deep cut.

Exactly. That's usually why they become hits in the first place, because it's not their typical sound. Even bands with a "consistent" sound, like AC/DC, can show this trend. AC/DC's biggest songs are just different enough from their typical style to really stand out.

Similar to what Silverchair did here in Australia, when they stopped playing material from their first album Frogstomp. I remember watching them play on New Year’s Eve at Pyramid Rock Festival and the crowd was practically begging to hear Tomorrow (their breakthrough track) and Daniel Johns (vocalist) said over the mic “we aren’t going to play anything from Frogstomp. Stop asking”
I think most bands eventually hate playing their debut material. Imagine playing songs you’ve moved away from, over and over again.

My uncle is a big Frank Zappa fan and went to his concerts whenever he performed locally. My uncle told a story about how the band came out and started playing new material but they noticed the crowd wasn't into it. Zappa actually stopped the show, asked the crowd if they wanted to hear the old stuff and dutifully played what the audience wanted to hear.
Always felt bad for artists that end up being defined by songs/albums that they no longer really identify with. At least Creep is, in my opinion, a really good song. And everyone who is *truly* in the know will always remember them for stuff like OK Computer and Kid A much more than Pablo Honey.
I love Raidohead, at least what I've heard from them so far, and I hope they know that even with the Creep fiasco, they're still icons of nonconventional composition and successful experimentation to many music fans
I'll remember them for everything they produced, but especially AMSP which is in my top 5 albums of all time.

I think Arctic Monkeys not playing Flourescent Adolescent live anymore is very interesting. They've said in interviews that playing that song feels like they are covering some other band's work. Makes sense, as its definitely an upbeat standout in their work. But damn is it sad!

The explanation to why they don’t play it is fully acceptable for me. I get it. Another example is how much Gene Simmons hate ”I was made for loving you”. Also ; I forgot who , but someone said - The most dissapointing thing you can hear at a Rolling Stones concert is : ”Here’s a song from our new album”. How boring must it be for Keith & the boys to keep playing their 60’s stuff ?

I like how this video mentions the recent years because I saw them in 2017 just a year after and they did perform Creep. I never saw a band so inspiring look so rigid and uncomfortable when performing a song.
Jonny's face during one of the 2016 performances when they got to the chorus just about sums up the band's opinion on Creep.

Steve Lacy, the singer of ‘Bad habit’ is another artist who has expressed his annoyance of the fact that he is known for that one song. He clearly shows it in his concerts
I fount the song like 2 years ago and I thought it was great. The undertones to high tones is gold.
I'm actually surprised Song 2 isn't getting the Creep treatment, as that one's even more recognizable and upbeat. Thom Yorke would not say 'woo-hoo' for the rest of his life if he made that song.

I think it's not getting the treatment because the entire song is a parody. The song makes fun of other songs popular in america, then it goes on to be popular in america. Very poetic
A similar thing happened to David Bowie with Space Oddity, despite him having many songs that were even more successful. Eventually he'd stop playing it for decades. In an interview during a 2003 tour he was asked if he'd play SO again and he said "it's too soon for that" despite the song being more than 30 years old at that point.
Falco was another musician who struggled with never following up his first hit (Rock me Amadeus) with a song quite as successful

“Pablo honey” is one of my favorite albums from my late teens.
Creep was the one that cought my attention, but very soon i started to listen to the rest and LOVED it.

I never knew they got sued for Creep. I fucking hate when these artists start to sue each other over 4 chord songs, what's even worse is how many lawsuits tom petty has been apart of because his music is just so simple. If you're gonna bring music back to it's roots, slow it down, and make it simple, then don't be surprised if someone else makes a song that vaguely resembles your song. I love creep because of its simplicity, it's a song that I think is so accessable because it's really easy to play and sounds good. It's a song that I like to play to warm up when I'm singing and playing. As a band who has been so innovative to the point where they get made fun of for it I could totally see why your most simple song being your most popular would piss you off. At the same time Radiohead isn't an easily digestible band, my friend had to sit me down and literally make me listen to kid a and ok computer all the way through for it to click for me and I'm a musician. Most of their music is not as accessible as Creep. I think Radiohead is great, I'm so glad I got to see them live in 2012. Kid A is my favorite album of theirs for sure.

I've seen them a few times and they've played creep. Last was 2017 at Glastonbury.
Ive never understood this, even as a musician and songwriter myself. Even if you hate the song that became a hit for you or your band, you gotta respect the fans that created a career for you bc of that hit. I guess its the metalhead in me where my favorite metal bands like A7X and Disturbed always played their well known material/hits too. You cant say Down With The Sickness or Beast And The Harlot werent hits and they played those tunes every time I saw them live. Wouldve been cool for Radiohead to do different versions live of Creep so the live fans still get a taste of that tune. Ive seen videos of Mountain doing cool live versions of Mississippi Queen and Im sure Leslie West played that at every dang show!
creep didn't create radiohead's career though. it attracted fans of a genre that radiohead doesn't even perform. it hurt them more than it helped them, because now people see radiohead as "the creep band" and get disappointed when their other songs are nothing like it.
Perhaps I am one of the few that would make this statement but I personally think that bands do not owe their fans particular songs just because they are popular. If a band dislikes a song for what it has become or just outright hate playing it live then they have the full right to choose not to play it.
I love when bands play obscure songs or special ones at their shows. Not every song has to be a well known one, or even their most popular.

i feel for radiohead. it sucks that they're so popular just for Creep, when OK Computer, Kid A, and In Rainbows are regarded as three of the best albums ever made.
On the one hand, always being associated with that one song and people always wanting to hear it would be annoying.
On the other hand, I can't feel that bad for someone getting famous and able to do their artistic passion as a full time job, and the price is that one song is more popular than the others

I love Pablo Honey..I ran out and got the album and any other album they released I bought. Just love them but Creep is that classic track that everyone knows instantly. They have so many damn good tracks..I could understand how they feel if all everyone only wants to hear is just the one track despite of all the other amazing tracks they have.
I remember coming across a compilation video of Brendon Urie and every time he freaked out on a liveshow when having to preform "I write since not tragedies." On one hand its a bit sad when a crowd loves a song so much that they can be heard clearly singing it over the track and then getting shit for it. But on the other hand I totally understand the monotony of doing the same thing and digging up old wounds every single night. It's a situation you can't win. Especially when fans leave after hearing their favorite song, not giving the band a change to show off their new work and evolve their sound.
And before people start generalizing: Do all veteran musicians get bored of their greatest hits? There's no absolute answer.
Robert Plant openly admitted he got bored of Stairway to Heaven half wat through the tour WHEN IT WAS STILL NEW! On the other hand Nicko McBrain has stated Hallowed be Thy Name is one of his favorite Iron Maiden songs to perform (the song turned 40 this year and has only been abscent from the setlist on literally 1 tour and a half).
Something that needs to be taken into consideration is, we all have good and bad days at work. Perforning the same songs could feel amazing in 1 gig and then 2 days later be like "fuck this shit, not in the mood...".
Also some bands out there like Led Zeppelin or Red Hot Chili Peppers love to improvise and never play the songs exactly the same which keeps it interesting and unpredictable.
I saw Thom Yorke in a grocery store in LA today. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn't want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.
He said, "Oh, like you're doing now?" I was taken aback, and all I could say was "Huh?" but he kept cutting me off and going "huh? huh? huh?" and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw Thom trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying. The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like "Sir, you need to pay for those first." At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.
When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually "to prevent any electrical infetterence," and then turned around and winked at me. I don't even think that's a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

It's so funny that some musicians hate their big tracks like this and others are very protective of theirs. MJ comes to mind with Billie Jean. It was his pride and joy and even though he always wanted to do something new with it, he acknowledged how iconic the Motown performance was and breathed new life into it on every tour and performance.
If a band is constantly trying to redefine their sound and push the boundaries of music, they risk alienating the audience that found something to like about their sound. The people who felt something in the son Creep also felt a connection to the band, but were soon met with a different sound altogether.
They are one of the best bands live/studio of all time. If youve never seen them, check out their tour dates, and do yourself a solid and go see them. Its worth the trip.
Ive seen 100's of high visibility bands, and radiohead has a few of the best shows ive ever seen and are on my top 10.

I think, to please the audience, a band should play their big hits, but of course it shouldn't be pushed like it was there. And honestly I think Pablo Honey is an incredibly underrated album. "You", "Ripcord", "Anyone Can Play Guitar", "Vegetable", etc. The Bends is still my favorite though!! 🤘

This is like barely on the subject at this point, but after listening to the _You Were Never Really Here_ soundtrack, finding out from this video that Jonny Greenwood was in Radiohead makes me love it all the more. It's insane how full circle stuff feels sometimes.
In at least one interview, the members of "Boston" called their biggest hit as something like "Feels Like the 342nd Time."
I heard Creep on MTV when it came out, I was like, "eh." Heard "Fake Plastic Trees" and "High and Dry" and was like, "that's a lil weird but I like it." I didn't even remember the band name. Couple years later went into a Tracks Records store (maybe it was Blockbuster music) to buy rap CD. I told the guy, I think I want to feel a different way about music, he sat me down, turned on "OK Computer"... I was done, I was changed forever. I never listen to Creep; I will listen to every song on the Pablo Honey album but not Creep.
I would actually ask for ‘Nude’ or ‘talk show host’ before I’d ask for ‘creep’.

Same with the hip-hop group De La Soul and their biggest song Me Myself and I. They grew to dislike it and you can find live recordings from the 2000s where they're chanting "we hate this song!" just before the beat drops lol
IDK if they still feel that way but it's just like Radiohead, basically every album they made after that strayed further and further from the sound found on that one specific song.

To really twist the blade that is Creep, the girl who inspired the lyrics attended a Radiohead concert. She was in Thom’s clear view. I can only imagine the anxiety that must have ignited. Still, I often wonder if she knew she was the inspiration for the lyrics, or stood there oblivious while mouthing the words to the song🤔
I haven’t been in the music scene for that many years but in my experience as a live performer I can relate by playing a certain song over and over
There are two things that can happen:
You either love to play it and never get sick of it or you deeply hate it but you are force to do it over and over cause you know that the crowd will positively react to it
I just to cover some songs that picked because I love them but now I can not hear it on the radio or in my phone without having the urge to skip it cause I’ve had enough
It is so different to play music because you love it than to do it as job
Working as a musician changed a lot the way I perceive music and I still love it tough but just in another way
I think similiar thing happened to tyler the creator. Yonkers became so popular and he have to perform it a hundred times. the problem is that he want to grow as an artist and yonkers make him and his fans dont move on and evolve. But great he finnaly getting out of the goblin era tho
Kind of reminds me of when I saw Weezer, and Rivers energy absolutely disappeared when performing songs from Blue, it made me feel kind of bad for them
I think there’s a massive amount of psychological gold to be mined about this specific thing. So much to say but for example… the fact that they outgrew it is not only good its indicative of massive personal growth. Something that is often stunted for young people who get famous. The fame keeps them trapped there in those moments. Glory days times a million.
But the way the song came back into the fold was more like a monument to their youth. There’s a distance to it. Even a love to it. A respect birthed partly from the disdain itself. And it’s not just them… their audience understands it in a deeper psychological sense than “yay their big song!” There is a love from the fans to radiohead for acceptance. The acceptance of some unfortunate glory of their lives. The dirt in their youth. It’s all growth.
If you aren’t embarrassed by stuff you did ten years ago, are you growing? That’s a common thought. … But then there should be more after. … If you don’t come to accept yourself, who you were, are you growing? That should be the obvious second step, which radiohead here demonstrates… but i think many other bands are often stuck on the first step because they are just doing it because they see other bands do it and think it’s cool to be above your own bullshit. And it is. To a point. But how small and trite it is to stop there. Coming to accept your life is a wonderfully important part of living.
All that being said… i am a songwriter myself and i regularly experience all of this. You love everything brand new. For obvious reasons. And then you scrutinize them and categorize and compare. You begin to distance from most of them, and even be embarrassed by some wondering how in the world you ever thought it was any good. (The whole time during there are songs you don’t ever hate as well). And it keeps going until they come back around again sort of as monuments… necessary evils that got you to the goods.
Sort of like the statues of confederate generals. They were definitely loved in their time by their people, but in hindsight it’s a bit weird to celebrate in that way. Because they were obviously not good. But they definitely thought they were, as did many.
Hopefully Radiohead understood that Creep is a great song.
Its your oldest song and the hook to your band, it's a message that a lot (if not most) of people struggle with and its delivered in a simple but well crafted manner, enough for listeners not only native english can understand and empathize with. Its important to a lot of people and thats why it should be important for Radiohead.
Is it their best song? Fuck no lol, I love that the songs hatred in the past fuled them to challenge themselves and create better material.

@@Thomasmemoryscentral my Iron Lung is exactly about this. They know that Creep gave them fame and a reason to exist as a band. But not in the way they would like it to. Just like an iron lung keeps you alive.

Saw them play in Coachella 2017 which I never expected to see it.
When I saw Radiohead in 2003, people were shouting for Let Down (a song they rarely played live back then), and he teased the opening in a similar way.
Never understood why Pablo honey wasn't more appreciated by fans. It's got those five songs on there that are just about perfect, IMO.

@@klocke-hx3xl It's just generic. The songs just seem to have the same structure, the same dynamics, and I hate hearing Thom whine about his love life. There are good songs in that album like Blow Out, Anyone Can Play Guitar and You, but the other moments just seem so cookiecutter. It's not genre-defining at all, will never be considered a milestone track, and would never be popular without creep.

Meanwhile, Pablo Honey completely flopped in the initial release, led to them being called "British Nirvana", "doesn't really deliver anything you haven't heard before", and was not recommended by most publications. It only got popular after The Bends because of Creep.
What kind of person would go to a Radiohead show and leave after they play Creep.
I saw U2 in 1998, and they did the same tease with Sunday Bloody Sunday.
I see it all the time Poser fans walk out mid concert after a bands biggest hit song is played so they can beat the car park rush. I was at a music festival A-Ha was the last act to play they open up with "Take on Me" and about 50% of the crowd started walking to the exit. You could see on the band's faces they were not impress. The singer then said well our true fans can now move bit more closer to the stage
and why is that a bad thing? the car park rush is lesser due to those people, which is a positive thing.
